General Discussion / Hart and UDeCOTT
« on: January 29, 2009, 07:51:46 PM »
Trinidad Guardian

Member of the Uff Commission of Enquiry Israel Khan, SC, yesterday waded into executive chairman of the Urban Development Corporation of T&T (Udecott) Calder Hart, telling him he had a knack for breaching established rules. This, as hearing of the Commission of Enquiry into the Construction Sector and Udecott continued. Khan told Hart that sacked government minister Dr Keith Rowley had been vindicated in the probe. “It seems to me that you have a knack, Mr Hart—with the greatest respect—for breaking your own rules and ignoring sagacious advice given to you, by lawyers, by ministers, everybody,” Khan said. “If we find that as a fact, that is a serious indictment against you.” Hart responded quickly: “If you made that indictment, it is serious...There is no question about that.”

Khan said Hart ignored the advice given to him by then planning and development minister Dr Keith Rowley, not to award a flawed contract to Hafeez Karamath Ltd for the Customs and Excise Building in Port-of-Spain. `He said Rowley was within his right to so advise, but Hart refused and proceed to get legal advice on the matter. Khan told Hart: “It seemed to me that Hafeez Karamath had a water-tight connection with Udecott insider information about contracts.” He was commenting on an issue raised by attorney for the Joint Consultative Council on the construction sector Alvin Fitzpatrick, SC, during cross-examination of Hart earlier.

In response to Fitzpatrick, Hart said he could not confirm how Karamath got information about certain packages at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba , south Trinidad. Later, in response to Khan’s submission, Hart said he did not know when the estimates for the packages were done. Karamath had tendered the exact figure for the packages even before it was made public. Hart said: “I don’t know when that estimate was done. I don’t know how he comes to the exact figures that are in that estimates, whether it was done pre or post submissions.” Khan told Hart: “If all the allegations, including Rowley’s claim that he (Hart) had committed perjury, turn out to be true—you ready to resign?” Hart answered: “If they turn out to be true? Yes!”

Khan forced Hart to withdraw a critical comment he made of the Commission. Hart had said that the Commission could have spent its time addressing more critical issues that those before it. Yesterday, Hart withdrew the comment. Khan asked Hart: “Would you agree that if all these things I pointed out to you are true, it will be a scandalous state of affairs in this country?” Hart said he agreed. Moments later, Commission chairman John Uff told Hart that no member of the Commission “holds any brief for any party. We are not here to accuse you of anything...We are here to listen to and weigh the material that comes before us.”

He said what Khan did earlier was to reflect “some very serious accusations that have been put.” Hart later told the Commission that he was receiving five salaries. He did not elaborate. He said, however, that the salaries were approved by the Public Sector Negotiating Committee. He said he received a bonus of between half-month and three months’ salary. He said, in response to further questions from Uff, that he did not expect any bonus from the Brian Lara Stadium project because it was not as successful as was originally intended.

General Discussion / Accounting 101 Help
« on: January 16, 2009, 05:21:27 AM »
Larry started a business a year ago when the she put in $50,000 of her own money. Shortly after that, the business borrowed $10,000 on a longterm bank loan. By the end of the year, the balance sheet included the following:
                                                          $
Noncurrent assets (net of depreciation)    53 000
Inventories                             2 500
Trade payables                                  2 700
Cash at bank                                  5 100
Trade receivables                             700
Noncurrent liabilities (longterm loan)               10 000

During the year Larry drew out $15,000 for her own spending.p

a)   How much profit (or loss) did Larry business make during its first year?

b)   Which principle did you follow in deriving Larry’s profit?

c)   What is the point of preparing an income statement if the profit figure can be found in the way that you have just done?

d)       “Inflation is not really a problem in accounting. In the income statement and balance sheet all items are affected by inflation in the same way, so we are always comparing like with like. In any case with inflation running at about 2% a year, the effect is negligible.”

Hi Pecan et al is me again...any help is appreciated on any of them?  Thanks

General Discussion / Accounting Help
« on: December 02, 2008, 07:31:47 PM »
Hello, Im knocking my head against the wall with this question 1b.
Any advice from you Accounting Gurus is greatly appreciated

PROBLEM 1:
AB manufactures and sells a single product. In the past year production capacity has been used to the full. The following financial information has been presented by the controller:

Manufactured and sold units    100 000 pcs
Sales price/unit               25 £
Variable costs/unit       5 £
Fixed costs          500 000 £

1a. Profit
£1 000 000
£1 500 000
£2 000 000

Revenue = 100,000 x $25 = $2,500,000
Less: Variable Costs = 100,000 x $5 = £500,000got
Less:  Fixed Costs     = £500,000
Profit = £2,500,000 - £500,000 - £500,000 = £1,500,000

So I got the answer for this question and used the same concept for the other one below but ah buss

The company has an investment option which would lower the variable cost by 4 £/unit and thus increase production capacity to 150 000 units per annum. It would however give rise to an increase in fixed costs by 340 000 £. The management believe that in order to sell more products it would be necessary to lower the price to 23 £/unit.

1b. Profit
a.£1 540 000
b.£1 890 000
c.£2 460 000

Revenue = 150,000 x $22 = 3,300,000  (22 is the contribution margin per unit)
Less: Variable Costs = 150,000 x $4 = 600,000
Less:  Fixed Costs     = £340,000
Profit = £3,300,000 - £600,000 - £340,000 = £2,360,000 BUT Im guessing 100,000 missing

Cricket Anyone / Dyson slams Caribbean domestic game

Dyson slams Caribbean domestic game
Cricinfo staff
November 17, 2008

Chris Gayle struck two centuries against Pakistan, but it was a familiar story of wasted chances for West Indies

West Indies coach John Dyson has criticised the standard of their domestic game after Pakistan completed a 3-0 whitewash of the one-day series in Abu Dhabi.

Dyson watched as West Indies let strong positions slip in all three matches and doesn't think the inter-island tournaments in the Caribbean are producing players ready for international level.

"Unfortunately the frustrating part is that international sport is about winning, the frustration as coach is that the newcomers don't have the basic skills for this kind of cricket," he said.

In the final ODI on Sunday, Chris Gayle and Ramnaresh Sarwan put West Indies into a promising position with a stand of 151, but West Indies then fell apart and lost nine for 74. It followed their final-over defeat in the opening game - where Jerome Taylor conceded 17 in the last over - and a batting collapse in the second match as Shivnarine Chanderpaul was left stranded on 107.

"If you look at the Australian system, by the time a player comes into the Australian team he has played umpteen number of matches in the Sheffield Shield cricket which is very good quality...so he is ready to play internationally."

Dyson added that the quality of regional West Indies cricket was "nowhere near" the standard of the Australian structure, and was generating players that "are unprepared to play against international teams."

Of the new faces tried by West Indies during their week in Abu Dhabi, the most encouraging performances came from fast bowler Lionel Baker who took five wickets in the three matches. But Dyson said there is a lot of hard work ahead if the players are to catch up with the standard of other countries

"At this level it's about trying to win matches, it shouldn't be about trying to teach the players how to play international matches. Our newcomers will have to learn the basics of international cricket, other countries have strong systems and have very very strong basics, so they are doing well."

West Indies' next international commitment is a month-long tour of New Zealand which starts in December and includes two Tests, two Twenty20 internationals and five ODIs.

Football / Beenhakker worried about Andrews' knee
« on: May 29, 2006, 08:55:07 AM »
Source:Soccernet.com

Trinidad and Tobago coach Leo Beenhakker has voiced concern over the fitness of Marvin Andrews ahead of the World Cup finals.

The Rangers defender limped out of the 2-1 friendly defeat by Wales in Austria on Saturday 10 minutes before the interval.

The 32-year-old registered faith healer has defied medical opinion by playing with a cruciate-ligament problem for over a year for the Light Blues.

Trinidad will face England, Paraguay and Sweden in Group B in Germany - their first appearance in the finals.

But Beenhakker is still not fully convinced Andrews will be among his squad.

He said: 'Normally Marvin would be one of my starting 11, but I have the feeling he's still not fit.

'It's just little things with his knee but he needs more time to recover.

'I can change a player who can't participate because of injury right up until 24 hours before our first match.

'Marvin wants to play and is proud to represent his country. But what I've seen here isn't the Marvin I know.

'I'll wait and hope he'll recover in time and be in Germany with us.'

I doe know but Marvin is we lucky STAR...but if he not fit..who do we place in his position....

Football / Hotel removes booze and porn as Saudis arrive
« on: May 27, 2006, 08:48:21 PM »
FRANKFURT, May 27 (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia arrived in Germany on Saturday becoming the fifth World Cup team to settle into their training base with just under two weeks to go until the tournament begins with the opening match on June 9.

The three-times Asian champions went from Frankfurt airport to the Hotel Dolce, north of Germany's financial capital in Bad Nauheim, which has been especially prepared for their arrival.

The hotel has removed alcohol from the minibars, blocked adult entertainment and other free-TV channels showing naked women and taken down tasteful nude photos in the fitness area.
Consumption of alcohol is forbidden in Islam and is a grave offence in Saudi Arabia, a country that enforces strict Islamic laws that also prohibit what it regards as pornography
.

Togo were the first of the 32 teams to come to Germany on May 15. They were followed by Costa Rica and Angola.

Ghana have also arrived, although they are leaving again to play two friendlies in England and Scotland in the next week.

Hosts Germany, by contrast, have been training in Italy and Switzerland and will return home on Tuesday.

Saudi Arabia are in Group H with Ukraine, Spain and Tunisia. They are due to play a friendly against Turkey in Offenbach, near Frankfurt, on Wednesday.

Lawd...how I goe survive in that Hotel boy...Any of Allyuh staying in dat hotel Dolce? ;D

Football / Wales without Giggs for Trinidad
« on: May 24, 2006, 09:10:12 AM »
BBC SPORTS

Ryan Giggs will miss Wales' friendly with Trinidad and Tobago in Austria on Saturday because of a toe injury.
The Wales captain sustained the injury in Sunday's 1-0 win over a Basque XI, and then aggravated the problem in Monday's training session in Spain.

Defenders Mark Delaney, Richard Duffy and Rob Edwards had already been ruled out of the match in Graz with injury.

Sam Ricketts and Owain Tudur Jones are also missing because of Swansea's League One play-off final on Saturday.

With so many full-backs unavailable, Toshack has called up Crystal Palace's teenager Rhoys Wiggins to the squad for the first time.

After the [Under-21] game we'll see how things are looking injury wise before deciding who to bring out to join the senior squad

Wales manager John Toshack

Wiggins, and Yeovil midfielder Aaron Davies, will join the squad in Austria after Wales Under-21's Uefa Championship qualifier in Wrexham on Wednesday.

Lewis Price, Gareth Bale, Craig Morgan, Andrew Crofts and Craig Davies are also expected to feature in Austria after playing at the Racecourse.

Bristol City striker David Cotterill, who scored in the first leg win over Estonia, has been retained by the senior squad preparing to face the World Cup-bound Trinidadians.

He came on as a substitute in the senior team's 1-0 win in Bilbao on Sunday and is a strong contender to start on Saturday as Toshack looks to blood a few more youngsters than he did against the Basque's.

"Wednesday will be a tough match for the U21s, Estonia are a good, strong side," Toshack told BBC Sport Wales.

"After the game we'll see how things are looking injury wise before deciding who to bring out to join the senior squad."

Here's how Beckham bends it

by Richard Ingham
May 16, 2006
PARIS (AFP) - Physicists are not known for donning replica shirts and face paint, yet they are among the millions who marvel at David Beckham, Roberto Carlos and other masters of the banana kick.

Backed by wind tunnels, high-speed cameras and computer simulation, scientists have been keen to understand the complex physics that go into one of those dazzling curving kicks from outside the box.

Three big variables combine to determine where the ball will go, according to researchers at Britain's University of Sheffield.

They are the VELOCITY of the ball, determined by the force at which it is struck; the SPIN of the ball, which imparts the curve; and the DRAG, or the braking effect of the air.

The key factor in all this is something called the Magnus Effect, named after a 19th-century German physicist, Gustav Magnus, who was curious to understand why spinning artillery shells deflected to one side.

Magnus found that a spinning ball or cylinder swirls the air around it, causing vortices on both sides of its surface.

Thus, one side of a spinning football experiences lift, while the other side is slowed. It is this imbalance of local air pressures that causes the sideways movement -- the curve.

But the real masters of the banana kick can also get the ball to change angle during its flight.

One of the most memorable place kicks in football history was a 30-metre stunner made by Roberto Carlos in a Brazil-France match in 1997.
The kick was initially so wide that a ballboy, standing to the right of the French goal, instinctively ducked, thinking that he was going to get whacked.

But then the ball suddenly dipped leftwards into the net, delighting Brazilian fans and leaving French keeper Fabien Barthez open-mouthed.

How did Carlos work this magic?

The answer lies in airflow.

Just after a kick, a spinning ball is moving forward at relatively high velocity, and the air flows irregularly over it.

But when the ball slows down -- specifically, when it reaches between eight metres and 10 metres per second (18-23 miles per hour), depending on its surface structure and texture -- the airflow becomes smooth, or "laminar," which instantly increases the drag.

The change is dramatic. In a fraction of a second, drag can be increased by 150 percent. This drastically brakes the forward movement of the ball and thus enhances the curving movement derived by the Magnus Effect.

The British journal Physics World estimates that Carlos kicked the ball at 30 metres per second (70 mph) with the outside of his left foot, impelling an anticlockwise spin of more than 10 revolutions per second.

The force of the kick initially caused the ball to take a relatively straight line, bringing it a metre (yard) to the right of the French defensive wall.

The ball then slowed, causing the laminar airflow to kick in and suddenly boosting the leftward curve, with the outcome that poor Barthez will no doubt remember all his life.

As any footballer will know, bending kicks also have other variables: the angle at which the foot hits the ball, the part of the foot that connects with the ball's surface, the humidity of the air and the ball.

High-speed cameras have shown that you will get maximum spin by kicking the ball with the front of your foot and with the angle between your leg and foot at 90 degrees, and if the ball, the boot and the air are all dry.

What the cameras don't say -- but which everyone knows -- is that it also helps if you are Brazilian.
