The clubs meet 24 hours later in the FA Youth Cup at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland (from): Carson, Harte, Anderson, M'voto, Hartley, Liddle, Weir, Donoghue, Richardson, Chandler, Yorke, Dennehy, Stokes, Dowson, Scott, Noble.

Dwight's challenge to Kenwyne

Dwight Yorke today challenged Kenwyne Jones to show the Premier League he can be one of the best in the business.
Sunderland's leading scorer is tipped for the very top, but Yorke demanded more from his countryman as the Black Cats battle to stay in the elite.

The Trinidad & Tobago veteran admitted the Wearsiders' next two home games against Birmingham tonight and Wigan on Saturday week could have a huge impact on their survival chances and urged Jones to show the hype surrounding him is well founded.

Yorke said: "The guy has got all the features and all the ingredients to be a top player. I still feel there is a lot for him to learn, but he has come here and he has done a fantastic job for us so far.

"But it is all right doing it for a certain time, you have to do it week in, week out.

"This has been half a season for Kenwyne in the Premier League, and yet people are ranting and raving. You judge someone not on just a season, you judge people over season upon season.

"When people know a little more about you, that's when you will be tested. He has done well for himself, but he needs to continue to do well for Sunderland Football Club.

"I am sure everyone in the dressing room knows that he is a big player for us. But we need more from him as well. We need him to probably get more goals for us.

"He has been great, but there is a little bit more to
come from Kenwyne."

Yorke played 13 Premier League games in his single campaign with Birmingham during 2004-05 before moving to Sydney. His Sunderland side pipped the Blues to the Championship title last season and the stakes are even higher this time round.

The 36-year-old said: "The important thing is that we don't lose faith, we stick together and we show a lot of courage and character between ourselves. Hopefully the spirit we play with will get us across the finishing line."There's no doubting that Birmingham and Wigan at home are massive games. They're the teams around us.

"We should not rule out that we can get positive results away from home, even though we have not managed to do so yet. But these are the games that will turn our season without a doubt.

"We need a massive result tonight and hopefully we can overcome that and look forward to Saturday at Liverpool."

Shaka Hislop signs up with ESPN.
By: Shaun Fuentes (TTFF).

Former National team goalkeeper Shaka Hislop has joined the broadcast teams of ESPN Soccernet Press Pass and SportsCenter program strands.
ESPN today announced the deal officially which will see the former outstanding Premiership goalie providing expert comment and analysis to both programs on a regular basis. In total, Hislop played almost 400 games in his career, the vast majority in the Premier League.
He played for West Ham in two separate spells and also played under Manager Harry Redknapp twice. He retired from football, aged 38, in August last year, after spending a season with Dallas FC in the MLS.
Hislop was one of a only a few players who, because of his dual nationality, played for England before going on to represent and captain his native Trinidad and Tobago, including at the 2006 FIFA World Cup. During the tournament he aided Englands progress through the group stages by keeping a brilliant clean sheet against their major group rivals Sweden.
I am excited to be joining ESPN, the undisputed leader in sports broadcasting. Given my career at club and international level I think it is a great move for me and a fantastic opportunity and I am looking forward to it. After 15 years in the game as a player you are sometimes tempted to think you have seen it all. I think there are a lot of things I can bring to the viewers with my playing experience and I look forward to sharing that with others.
A release from ESPN stated that Hislops commentary will appear on Africa, Middle East, the Caribbean and the Pacific Rim versions of SportsCenter and Press Pass. They will also be available in the UK on ESPNsoccernet.com. Both programs are produced in ESPNs headquarters in Bristol, Connecticut, where the latest in digital technology and new media distribution occurs.
Hislop was previously likely to take up an offer from a Trinidad University but negotiations there stalled last year and Hislop was lured over by the network giants.
"It really wasn't too hard a decision to make eventually," Hislop told TTFF Media. "It is something I've always thought about and it gives me the chance to stay close to the game. With the playing side coming to an end I always knew I would have to head over into something else whether it be in the coaching or management aspect or in this case in the promotional side of the sport and I'm really looking forward to it," he added.

Stern's finish was very clinical. I like the way he just tuck it pass the goal keeper. Truth be told, those are the goals that are mostly scored on keepers. People in the Caribbean always trying to buss the net and kick over bar.

One thing I notice with the US camera crew. If it was not offsides they would have showed the line of the defense and when the ball was played. Secondly, Trinidad had an appeal for hand ball on a goal attempt and instead of the US showing it over on the replay, they opted for showing the goal that they scored a few minutes ago. Which was already shown several times. I am tired of this bias broadcasting.

Nyron Nosworthy is Sunderland's Player of the Season for the 2006-07 campaign.

The centre-back, 26, came out on top in a poll here on safc.com.

Nosworthy will receive his trophy at the Stadium of Light before tomorrow night's game against Burnley.

He said: "It's a great honour and I'm delighted with the award, I'd just like to thank everyone who voted for me.

"I just try to give it my best and for the fans to show their appreciation and vote for me is great.

"It has been a good season so far and we want to make it a special one by winning promotion, we have two massive games left.

"The Sunderland fans have always been great with me and I really do appreciate it, their support means so much."

Nosworthy finished ahead of skipper Dean Whitehead and Carlos Edwards came in third place.

Jonny Evans, the centre-back on loan to Sunderland from Manchester United, picked up the 2006-07 Young Player of the Season award.

Carlos Edwards says he felt like he had just completed the Tour de France after Sunderland's latest team-building exercise.

Roy Keane and his players went mountain biking in North Yorkshire yesterday and it turned out to be tougher than expected.

The race, between groups of players, was broken into stages around Swaledale ... and lasted for four hours.

Edwards said: "We didn't know what was in store when we set off, we only found out when we got there and saw loads of bikes and helmets lined up.

"It was tough but we had a good day - some of the hills we climbed were something else. Let's just say the lads were hoping that they didn't have to go on the exercise bikes in training this morning."

edwardswrightbike290 Yellow jerseys ... Carlos Edwards and Stephen Wright on their bikes yesterday

Keane added: "We had a good day, it is good to mix it up. You don't have to be on the training pitch every day of the week.

"It was a long, hard session - four hours out on a mountain bike. But it was a beautiful day and the lads enjoyed it.

"I joined in, I made the effort and I'm paying for it today. The seats were like razor blades!"

Keane has also taken his players go-karting, paint-balling, white-water rafting and on an army-style assault course this season.

Yorke robbed again
Friday, April 13th 2007

DWIGHT YORKE

Sports Mail

SPORTS EDITOR: How could the panel of judges vote Stephen Ames as the Male Sports Personality of 2006? What accomplishments by any sports personality from Trinidad and Tobago in 2006 surpassed that of Dwight Yorke. Call me xenophobic or insular but they robbed Dwight Yorke again. Every member on that judging panel should be blacklisted by the organisers for the discrimination meted out to our national sporting treasure. To make matters worse, golfer Stephen Ames who has Canadian citizenship gets the sports award for exploits in golf tournaments that had little to do with national representation. How can we as Tobagonians and supporters of Soca Warriors across the globe remain quiet about this shameful decision? Yorke himself must be terribly hurt after leading this country in its finest hour of glory since Hasely Crawford's Olympic exploits in 1976.

Yorke and his men had united Trinidad and Tobago for one brief period when we were oblivious to class, ethnicity and the politics of the day. Many sporting enthusiasts accepted that it was a foregone conclusion that the best defensive player in the first round of the 2006 World Cup was the only contender for this top sports award. How come Yorke did not get the nod in 1994 when he had that glorious run with Manchester United?

Remember when he helped that club win the UEFA Champions Cup, the biggest club competition in Europe and by extension the world.

I am astonished to find some persons equating Yorke's sporting triumphs of 2006 with that of Stephen Ames - the best ever Caribbean golfer in what we consider a minor sport.

Government paid tribute to our Soca Warriors by giving each player the Chaconia Gold to the delight of most of the citizenry, but the judges of First Citizen Bank Sports Foundation favoured Stephen Ames outstanding golfing performance for Canada over the brilliant on-field and off-field exploits of the captain of the National football team. So Dwight Yorke exits the national stage without ever attaining the title of Sports Personality of the Year beaten by Brian Lara in 2005 and Stephen Ames in 2006.

Perhaps Tobagonians, we must truly reassess our relationship with Trinidad.

Luton face FA probe over payments
Kenilworth Road
Luton are the subject of an FA inquiry
Bill Tomlins, who has resigned as chairman of Championship side Luton Town, has admitted making irregular payments to agents on three occasions.

But Tomlins told BBC Three Counties that he made no private gain himself and contacted the Football Association to report what had happened.

Following Tomlins approach, the FA is now holding an inquiry.

Tomlins added he felt it was the right time to resign with major investment into the club expected within 48 hours.

Interview: Luton Town chairman Bill Tomlins

I feel it is appropriate for me to stand down at this time

Bill Tomlins

It remains unclear whether the investment amounts to a direct takeover of the club.

Tomlins told the BBC that the irregular payments were made through the club's holding company J10.

A Luton statement said: "Earlier this year Mr Tomlins approached the FA requesting a meeting to clarify certain matters relating to the football club.

"Following this meeting the FA is currently carrying out an inquiry."

Tomlins said: "There has been too much disruption surrounding the club in recent months. I feel it is appropriate for me to stand down at this time."

The Luton statement added: "The board recognises the contribution made by Mr Tomlins while he was chairman of the club.

"As the matter is now with the Football Association there will be no further comment by the club until the inquiry has been completed."

Carlos signs with Sunderland.
.... Dwight behind move.
By: Shawn Fuentes (TTFF Media).

Trinidad and Tobago midfielder Carlos Edwards has set his sights on guiding new club Sunderland to Premiership promotion after signing a new three-year contract with the club on Tuesday valued at 1.5m.
Coincidentally, the 28-year-old Edwards now joins National team captain Dwight Yorke at the club who was instrumental in getting Roy Keane to sign the former Defence Force playmaker. And Edwards deal has the biggest value for a T&T international since Yorkes 12.6m move to Manchester United in 1998.
"We're absolutely delighted to have captured such a sought-after, top player," said Black Cats boss Keane.
"A lot of clubs have been interested in Carlos, so it's great that he will be here at Sunderland to play his part in getting this club back to the Premiership."
Edwards became the first Luton player since Mal Donaghy in 1982 to represent his county in the World Cup finals last summer and his impressive performances for Trinidad and Tobago linked him with a move away from Kenilworth Road.
A beaming Edwards expressed satisfaction with his new move moments after leaving Sunderlands Stadium of Light where he signed his contract on Tuesday. He moved to a club now 10th on the Championship Table from Luton which is now in 19th spot.
Im actually just driving back home after signing the deal. I didnt expect the news to be out already, Edwards laughed as he spoke to TTFF Media when being told it had already grabbed front page headlines on the BBC official site.
Edwards spoke of Yorkes influence and the fact he chose to be part of Sunderlands promotion drive rather than sign with a Premiership club.
I must say it is something I wanted to do which is to sign a contract like this. Dwight had a big part to do with it. He called me up and the manager inquired and then the deal materialized. Dwight spoke highly about the club and about the role I could play in helping them back into the Premiership. And I saw it all for myself when I visited the club today the facility is fantastic, Edwards told TTFF Media.
Its a dream come true really and now being part of the club I am hoping for better things because we will be pushing for promotion. We are only three points off the playoffs and hopefully I can do my part now as a new signing.
Edwards added that he was sure his presence and performance at the 2006 World Cup played a part in this move.
Teams dont sign you unless they feel you have something special and can add it to the club. And Roy Keane may have seen something and Im glad it came through.
Being at the World Cup definitely has played a part in this. There is going to be interest in any player who has been at the World Cup regardless of the height of the club. It takes quality players to play in a World Cup and unfortunately more of our players didnt make moves as well. The guys now need to continue working and try to emulate players like myself who have moved on through hard work. I crept before I walked from back home to Wrexham to Luton and now to Sunderland, Edwards added.
And about the fact that Premiership clubs Newcastle United, Watford, Charlton Athletic and Scotlands Celtic also showed interest, Edwards promptly stated This is what most people will talk about. They will think its a bad decision if they see it as giving up a chance to play on the bigger stage. I know money has a lot to play in football. I love to play football and I didnt want to sign a multi-million dollar contract to maybe sit on the bench. I have a talent and I need to be playing. I will cherish this deal and hopefully take into the Premiership. Its a challenge but I am positive that during my contract here we will end up in the Premiership, Edwards ended. He is expected to make his debut for Sunderland in Saturdays FA Cup fixture away to Preston North End.
Edwards signed for Luton in May 2005 from Wrexham after attracting interest from Mike Newell for some time - the Hatters boss originally tried to sign the 28-year-old during his time as Hartlepool manager.
He spent five seasons at Wrexham after signing from Trinidad side Defence Force in June 2000 for 125,000, helping the Red Dragons win the LDV Vans trophy in 2005.
Edwards: My debt to Fergie.
By: James Hunter (Evening Chronicle).

Carlos Edwards has revealed he owes Sir Alex Ferguson a favour for recommending him to Sunderland boss Roy Keane. Trinidad and Tobago international Edwards joined Sunderland earlier this month in a 1.5m switch from Luton Town.
The fact Edwards spoke to Sunderland's Dwight Yorke, who plays alongside him at international level, about the move before agreeing to sign is no secret - but Ferguson's role in the deal is less well known.
Before signing him, Keane spoke to Ferguson and the Manchester United chief had no hesitation in singing Edwards' praises.
Fergie knew all about Edwards after seeing him several times when the winger was a team-mate of his son Darren at Wrexham.
Edwards said: "I was amazed when I heard Sir Alex had recommended me to Roy Keane - it is very flattering.
"I played alongside his son Darren for five years at Wrexham and I knew he came to watch us a few times.
"I remember meeting him once when he came into the dressing room at the end of a match.
"For someone like Sir Alex to speak to the gaffer and tell him good things about me is just fantastic."
Edwards moved from Wrexham to Luton in the summer of 2005 and enjoyed his time at Kenilworth Road - but admits he was looking to move his career forward and jumped at the chance to move to Sunderland.
He added: "I am not the type to be linked with a lot of clubs and then be asking for a move.
"I just concentrated on my football and when the chance came to join a big club like Sunderland I knew it was right for me."
Edwards made his Black Cats debut in the FA Cup defeat at Preston and then made his first start, and home debut, in the win against Ipswich last weekend.
The Wearsiders are only a point outside the play-off places and go to Sheffield Wednesday this weekend looking to increase the pressure on the clubs above them.
Edwards said: "There are going to be more than 6,000 Sunderland fans there. We will all be doing our best to give them something to smile about."
Keane refused to comment today on reports linking him with Plymouth centre-half Tony Capaldi, Colchester stopper Greg Halford and Man United's Alan Smith. He was also tight-lipped on claims Birmingham City are interested in signing Republic of Ireland striker Stephen Elliott.

HISLOP REVEALS WORLD CUP DREAM

Shaka Hislop hopes a run in the West Ham United side can boost his dream of playing in this summer’s World Cup finals.

The veteran goalkeeper will be between the posts again for tonight’s televised Barclays Premiership clash with Birmingham City at Upton Park because of a back injury to Roy Carroll.

It is another opportunity for Hislop, who will be 37 later this month, to show Trinidad & Tobago coach Leo Beenhakker he should be first choice in Germany, where they will face England, Sweden and Paraguay in Group B.

Fulham’s Tony Warner and Clayton Ince of Coventry City are both also included in the squad to face Iceland in a friendly at the end of February.

And Hislop hopes the chance of first-team football in the Barclays Premiership will help press his claim for a starting place.

“Nothing has really changed in that respect as I was always trying to push Roy as hard as I could, although now I suppose I have added reason to,” said Hislop, who returned to West Ham in the summer after being released by Portsmouth.

“I will be trying my hardest to get into the side and hold onto the shirt as long as possible because recently I have also been the number two for Trinidad.

“I am sure that if I can get a good run in the West Ham team, it would hopefully see me move up the pecking order internationally so I can play a big part in the summer.”

The Hammers will be looking for a seventh straight win tonight - one which would all but secure their top-flight status for another season.

Hislop said: “We have shown not only to everybody else, but more importantly to ourselves that we are good enough for this league and that the football we play will take us places and get us results.”

Steve Bruce has insisted he will “leave no stone unturned” to find why Birmingham are continually dogged by long-term injury problems.

The Blues chief has even hinted the club’s St Andrews pitch - newly laid last summer - may be a factor.

Bruce could have up to 11 players sidelined for tonight’s encounter.

The likes of David Dunn, Stan Lazaridis, Muzzy Izzet and Mikael Forssell have all had spells out of action of 12 months or more, leaving Bruce in a state of despair at times.

He said: “I hate to make excuses about injuries but we have got to seriously look at why we are getting so many injuries all of the time.

“I can’t put my finger on it. I have been a manager for nearly 10 years and I have been at Birmingham four years and I have never known anything like this.

“It is an unbelievable situation we find ourselves in. I will definitely leave no stone unturned to see if there is anything we can do to improve matters.

“We relaid a new pitch in the summer. It is something we are going to have to look into because they make pitches now much, much firmer than they used to be.

“That is why most pitches look good, and ours does for the time of year, but it is really firm and hard so maybe we will just blame it on that. Maybe it is something to do with that. Who knows?

“We will try to look at anything. Our training ground has been the same for the last three-and-a-half years so we can’t look at anything there which might be to blame.”

Bruce added: “If you look at the injuries we have got, most of them are muscular but two or three of them are twists. We have tried to do everything we possibly can but most times it seems to be happening in games.

“Three weeks ago we had everyone fit when we played Portsmouth. You were thinking then, ‘Hallelujah - at last a full squad’ and three weeks later we are down to ridiculous numbers again.”

The majority of Matthew Upson, Dunn, Izzet, Chris Sutton, Neil Kilkenny, Lazaridis and Olivier Tebily are unlikely to play against the Hammers while Emile Heskey and Damien Johnson are suspended.

But DJ Campbell and Martin Latka are eligible after missing the FA Cup replay win over Reading as Birmingham look to cut the six-point gap between themselves and fourth bottom West Bromwich Albion.

Football / Hayden Fitzwilliam’s back in Tobago for father's funeral
« on: February 03, 2006, 10:34:16 AM »
I first off, I want to offer my condolences to him and his family. It's a sad time for him. But, I could not help asking him, if he thinks he would be able to try out with the national team. I know it wasn't the time to ask such a question, but knowing the passion both of us have for the game and our country I had to ask. He said, "he wasn't sure if he would get the call or what his chances were."

The reason I am posting this topic, is simply because I know he is the caliber of player that needs to be looked at. I also remember that T & T is looking for a left sided player. Hayden is too talented to pass up. Some of you may remember him with Signal Hill college team along with an early call up in the campaign for the national team run to this year’s world cup. At this point I will not say why he wasn't currently on the team. But, anybody who knows about Trinidad and Tobago football will know this dude. Again, this guy is too good to not be given a call up.
