Football / What to make of the MLS SuperDraft?
« on: January 24, 2008, 09:23:33 AM »
The 'SuperDraft' isn't just about talent
by Jamie Trecker
The man from the Windy City pulls no punches when it comes to soccer in the USA. What to make of the MLS SuperDraft?

Thirteen years on, it remains a work in progress.
This year's crop was no exception. Few, if any, of the players available last week will make an immediate impact on their teams. There was no obvious standout like last season's Maurice Edu and no big deals materialized on draft day, as most teams seemed content to move cap money around in an effort to ultimately stock up in the transfer market.

Part of the problem with the draft is that too many of the available players are unfinished products from a college system that can fall short in many cases of preparing them for life as a professional. Those who do get identified by club scouts can turn out to be far less than expected once they hit the field among professionals.

The college game, with its limited season and strange rules, insufficiently prepares players for the realities of pro soccer, in stark contrast to college baseball, basketball, football and ice hockey, because of course many of the best college-aged players have been culled out by MLS, by U.S. Soccer, or, in rare cases, by overseas clubs.

Most teams also try to snap up cap-exempt talent, for obvious reasons. Because the players classified under the "Generation Adidas" rubric don't count against MLS' meager $2.3 million salary cap, these guys can fill out a bench without affecting the bottom line. They are coveted. All nine GA players were gone by the 19th pick, and six went in the top ten.

The salary cap also means that teams are tempted into ditching experience for financial breathing room. One of the most glaring examples of this was Kansas City's surprising selection of Chance Myers with the first overall pick. Earlier in the week, K.C. had unloaded Nick Garcia (and his salary) to San Jose. In Myers, not a clear No. 1 pick, the Wizards get a bargain basement replacement. He's a guy who may or may not be able to contribute.

The salary cap system means that the best players tend to go late, and teams that enter the draft with room to move can get lucky. Chicago got gifted with Patrick Nyarko — the projected number one pick — when the Ghanaian (who will count against the cap) was left waiting. A similar thing happened to Wake Forest's Julian Valentin and UConn's Julius James. They sat while the freebies made their way to the podium.

The truth is, the timing of the draft doesn't help matters either. It falls smack in the middle of the FIFA Euro-South American transfer window when a number of clubs are waiting to see just what they'll have to play with. For example, the Fire may need a goalkeeper if Matt Pickens decamps for Europe. New England did not know on draft day whether or not it would have Taylor Twellman (still in ongoing negotiations with Preston North End) and D.C. is deep in negotiations with three of their key foreign players.

For now, the aftermath of this year's draft is uncertain. If just ten of the 56 men selected Friday can make an impact, MLS will consider this draft a success. But, if the past is any guide, few of these players will forge a memorable career in the league, much less make an impact.

And over and over, the top picks in the draft have been overshadowed by the unheralded gems who go late. Who remembers Steve Shak (1st in 2000) or Nikolas Besagno (1st in 2005)? Keep in mind that Jozy Altidore went to New York 17th back in 2006, while Jonathan Bornstein settled to 37th that year. And, in truth, MLS hasn't had a truly deep draft since 2004.

The bottom line? While drafts have proven to be the bedrock in American pro sports — allowing teams to rebuild while preventing the young athletes from freely selling their talents to the highest bidder — the MLS version is a crap shoot at best and a yawn too often.

Until the American college game truly becomes a player production vehicle, that isn't going to change.

2008 MLS SuperDraft - Round 1

# Team Player P College
1.  K.C.  Chance Myers  D  UCLA
2.  DAL  Brek Shea  M/D  U.S. U-17
3.  RSL  Tony Beltran  M/D  UCLA
4.  L.A.  Sean Franklin  M/D  CSUN
5.  COL  C. O'Brien  M  UCSB
6.  CLB  Andy Iro  D  UCSB
7.  CHI  P. Nyarko  F  Va. Tech
8.  DAL  Josh Lambo  GK  U.S. U-17
9.  TOR  Julius James  D  UConn
10.  TOR  Pat Phelan  M  Wake Forest
11.  K.C.  R. Espinoza  M  Ohio St.
12.  CHI  Dominic Cervi  GK  Tulsa
13.  N.E.  R. Valentino  D  USF
14.  RSL  David Horst  D  Old Dominion

DRAFT WINNERS: Toronto, which needed help everywhere, got the best defender available in the draft in James and a potential starter in Pat Phelan of Wake Forest. They also took a gamble on Notre Dame's Joseph Lapira, who is uncertain whether he will sign with MLS or head abroad. Chicago got a steal with Nyarko. Los Angeles got Valentin late, and he can help them. New coach Ruud Gullit was otherwise unimpressed by the quality showcased at the MLS combine. Columbus will be helped by Andy Iro ... if he stays in the USA. Dallas got a steal in cap-exempt Eric Avila, and took a gamble on teen Brek Shea.

DRAFT LOSERS: Chivas USA had only one pick, and Keith Savage doesn't look like much. Colorado's draft was just plain strange, with the Rapids taking Ciaran O'Brien in an attempt to fill the hole left from Kyle Beckerman's move to Real Salt Lake. While we hate to second-guess New England's Steve Nicol, his choice of Rob Valentino was curious, to say the least. New York got very little, and is clearly looking to sign players from outside the country.

Football / Jones is the best prem striker says Roy Keane.

Jones is best in Prem, boasts Keane.
By: FOXSports.

Sunderland boss Roy Keane has hailed Kenwyne Jones as the best striker in the Premier League - and reckons the 23-year-old is worth £40million.
The Trinidad and Tobago frontman has made a nonsense of his £6million price tag, which raised a few eyebrows when Keane handed over the cheque to Southampton in August.
Jones demonstrated his prowess once again last weekend when he took England international defender Sol Campbell apart to pave the way for Kieran Richardson to shoot down Portsmouth.
Keane always felt he had paid a more than reasonable price for the towering hitman, but insists that if other Premier League strikers are being spoken of in the £20million bracket, his investment was a huge bargain.
He said: "I have said before, there is no doubt we have got the best striker in the Premier League at the moment in Kenwyne, no doubt about it.
"If they are on about certain strikers being worth £20million, then Kenwyne is worth £40million, without a doubt.
"I wouldn't swap him for any of them."
Jones will be in good company on Saturday when he leads the line at Tottenham, who have in-form strikers of their own in the shape of Dimitar Berbatov and Robbie Keane.
But while Juande Ramos' front two began the season with their reputations firmly established, Jones has been something of a surprise package, even for the man who took him to Wearside.
Asked how satisfying it was to see his summer signing blossoming in the top flight, Keane said with a smile: "I was going to get one right, wasn't I?
"By the law of averages, you are going to get one right out of 15 or 20.
"Every time a player comes to a club, no matter how much you have looked at him, you just never know how they are going to react.
"He has really surprised us. We knew he was a talented lad, but he has knuckled down.
"Even last week, he was clearly not 100% fit, but he is doing a great job for the team.
"Ultimately all these top players in the world we talk about going back over the years are also big team players.
"Kenwyne has done really well for us, I have to say."
Sunderland head for Spurs - the side against which they opened their campaign with a 1-0 victory to spark fresh optimism for the season - languishing in the bottom three despite last weekend's win over Pompey.
They do so with their injury problems having struck once again with winger Ross Wallace ruled out for the season by a knee injury, defender Danny Higginbotham facing surgery to pin a broken toe and midfielder Grant Leadbitter sidelined for up to three weeks with a similar, but less serious, fracture.

Football / Chelsea get Barca repeat
« on: December 16, 2005, 06:15:47 AM »
chelsea will again face Barcelona in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League, while Arsenal will play Real Madrid and Liverpool play Benfica.

In a repeat of last year's controversial tie at the same stage, Jose Mourinho's men will this time play host to the Spanish giants in the first leg.

The Premiership champions will then head to Camp Nou for the second leg, which was the scene of last year's controversy involving referee Anders Frisk.

Another England versus Spain tie will see Arsenal face Real Madrid with a place in the last eight at stake. Real will host the first leg at El Santiago Bernabeu after coming second in their group.

Reigning champions Liverpool will travel to Lisbon for the first leg of their tie with Benfica, who disposed of Manchester United in the group stages.

Another glamour tie sees last year's beaten finalists Milan facing German giants Bayern Munich, with the first leg in Munich.

Rangers have been handed a tie against Spanish side Villarreal after becoming the first Scottish side to come through the group stages.

Ajax will play Internazionale, while Juventus will play German side Werder Bremen.

General Discussion / BOMB IN PORT OF SPAIN AGAIN
« on: August 10, 2005, 10:47:29 AM »
reports are that a bomb went off in a bin in POS on george street.as far as the reports go no one is injured...

The latest explosion in downtown Port of Spain did not lead to injury or property damage. However it has once again caused panic, with the police saying no stone would be left unturned in the investigation into the incident.

The blast occurred on George Street at 11:45 this morning.

The blast rocked the immediate area and could have been heard some distance away.

Police and members of the Defence Force were quickly on the scene, blocking off the area to pedestrian and mobile traffic.

Police Commissioner Trevor Paul says the service will unleash the full brunt of the law on those responsible for the second explosion in just over a month.

Business operators in the area were forced to evacuate their buildings.

Deputy Mayor of Port of Spain Rishi Lakhan was on the scene of the explosion and he used the opportunity to lament the lack of manpower to effectively monitor situations.

However in the meantime Mayor Lakhan said people must not carry out their business in fear in the capital.

And the Trinidad and Tobago Chamber of Industry and Commerce condemns in the strongest possible terms this morning’s blast.

The chamber says it is noteworthy that this second bombing has occurred almost one month to the day after the first explosion.

It says this second explosion seems to suggest that the blasts are well planned, organised assaults taking place in the hart of the city.

The chamber is also slamming the authorities for not being forthcoming regarding the status of the first attack.

It says government should now consider soliciting foreign expertise to investigate the incidents

Football / Everton sign Phill Neville from Man U
« on: August 04, 2005, 06:03:23 AM »
Everton have signed Phil Neville from Manchester United, subject to the England international passing a medical.

Neville will cost The Toffees in excess of £3 million after deciding to end his career-long association with The Red Devils.

The 28-year-old missed United's friendly against Royal Antwerp on Wednesday evening as he homed in on a move to Goodison Park.

Toffees manager David Moyes has been anxious to strengthen his squad ahead of the club's first foray into the UEFA Champions League.

With Villarreal standing in Everton's way of a place in the group phase, Neville's vast European experience will be a boost to the Merseyside club.

His versatility will also be a useful tool for Moyes, as Neville is capable of playing in both full back positions and in midfield.

Neville's impending departure from Old Trafford will bring an end to a trophy-laden decade for the player with The Red Devils.

He made his debut in the now-famous 3-1 defeat to Aston Villa on the opening day of the 1995/96 season when United were told they would 'never win anything with kids'.

In the subsequent decade, Neville has gone on to make 389 appearances for United, scoring eight goals, and has also been a regular fixture in the England squad.

Sir Alex Ferguson's decision to sanction the sale of Neville is likely to fuel talk he has a midfield signing lined up, particularly with Kleberson also close to leaving the club.

Neville is due to sign a five-year contract with Everton and Moyes revealed he plans to use the player in a holding midfield role.

"Phil is a quality footballer who will, I feel certain, improve and enhance the squad we are putting together," Moyes told the club's official website. "He is very much a professional's professional and I am very happy to have signed him.

"Primarily I see Phil as a holding midfield player but he is so versatile that he gives us not only much-needed cover but also several additional options.

"We have staved off a great deal of competition to get him but from the first minute I spoke to him he only wanted to come and join Everton. His attitude throughout the entire negotiation process has been first class."

all efforts should be made to retain coach leo beenhakker after the WCQ even if the unthinkable happens and the warriors do not qualify for the WC.he is by far the best and most experienced coach to ever graced our national team and i think that he can do wonders to develop the game not only locally but in the region as well.
