TORONTO (AP) -- The Toronto Raptors have fired coach Sam Mitchell one day after the team absorbed an embarrassing loss at Denver.

Raptors general manager Bryan Colangelo says assistant Jay Triano has been promoted to interim coach. Triano's first game as coach is Friday night at Utah.

Colangelo calls Wednesday's move a difficult but necessary step.

Toronto is 8-9 after it lost 132-93 at Denver on Tuesday night -- the fifth-worst defeat in franchise history.

Mitchell was 156-189 in four-plus seasons as Raptors coach. He was honored as the NBA's coach of the year for the 2006-07 season.

Triano is in his seventh season on the Raptors' coaching staff. He becomes the seventh coach in franchise history.

B/S if you ask me. Looks like Colangelo and Mitchell never got along from the get go so at the first chance he see, he let him go.

Soca star attacks DJ's car

Michael Mondezie mmondezie@trinidadexpress.com

Friday, November 16th 2007

A long-standing verbal dispute between a popular soca star and a radio DJ escalated into an act of vandalism on Tuesday night when the entertainer defaced the soundman's vehicle with an ice pick.

The irate South-based singer who was signed to Ultra Records of the US in 2005, was reportedly upset over his lack of airplay at 96.1 FM radio station where the DJ is employed. He took out his frustrations on the DJ's 2007 white Suzuki Grand Vitara leaving several long scratches around the body of the vehicle which was parked on Tragarete Road, Port of Sapin, in front of the radio station. Damage is estimated at $15,000.

The DJ, who was on air at the time, was alerted and came outside to catch the entertainer in the act of defacing his vehicle.

The two exchanged heated words before police officers from Woodbrook Police Station, responding to an earlier call by an eyewitness, arrived on the scene to defuse the potentially explosive situation.

No arrest was made, however, after the DJ refused to press charges against the singer.

The two have since settled the dispute with the singer offering to foot the bill for repairs to the vehicle.

The DJ, speaking on condition of anonymity, however, says there is a lesson to be learnt.

"Is not one thing cause this, is more to that. It's a whole heap of things that led to built up frustration

"He was frustrated because his music was not playing, but his music is playing and is just sad that it came to this," the DJ said during a phone interview yesterday.

"The thing is the public is affected by this so it's no longer a personal thing between me and him.

"We might say sorry, but is a serious matter and we can't set this example for young artistes coming up. I'm lucky it's the car and not me."

The artiste refused to go on record when contacted via phone yesterday.

The owner of the radio station, Anthony "Chinese Laundry" Chow Lin On, said he was aware of the incident but refused to comment further.

Football / Team reward
« on: June 24, 2006, 07:09:09 AM »
I think this has been touched upon before but I want to ask. Why do you guys think these players should be rewarded with a million dollars and a piece of land?. When I think about it these fellas are doing a "job" and get paid for playing and got paid extra for going to the WC. I know this is the first time however what go happen in 2010 when we make it again? more money/land? and what about 2014? same?. I think they are working just like me and you on a monday-friday and are getting paid beyond what most of us make. In canada/US if you do anything special ie...gold medal all they does do is give you some plaque and say thanks for your work. This is just my view and I know other will say different which I expect and will like to hear, but I think land/a million is a bit much.

By Ricardo Setyon, SI.com

Through late April, SI.com will profile two World Cup teams a week. We continue with Trinidad and Tobago. Click here for the full archive.

FIFA world ranking: No. 50.

How they qualified for Germany: Finished in fourth place in CONCACAF with a 4-1-5 record; won a two-leg playoff against Asia's third-place Group B team, Bahrain.

Previous World Cups: None.

Manager: Leo Beenhakker, second year with team.

Key players
At age 34, Trinidad's biggest star gets the prize of his entire career: Dwight Yorke will finally play in a World Cup. A veteran of three English Premiership clubs, the striker is still in good physical shape at his current club, Australia's Sydney FC. Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson once called Yorke a "natural killer." He's also his country's hero and its leader on the pitch.

Trinidad's other main forward, Stern John, is playing at his peak in England's second division for Coventry City. "Bravo" is also an MLS veteran and perhaps Trinidad's best player. He's dangerous in the penalty box, scoring 12 goals in World Cup qualifying, and may be the heir to Yorke's throne.

Russell Latapy is Trinidad's elder statesman at 37. A former star in Portugal's Superliga, he currently plies his trade for Scotland's Falkirk. He's still a player to watch, mostly because he's a player/coach. He's only on the national team because Yorke insisted Beenhakker include him. Even so, he's an influential leader and will be the only player/coach in Germany.

What to watch for
With the longest odds to win, this is considered the weakest team at the World Cup. But don't tell the 1.3 million Trinidadians that -- Beenhakker is a national hero for taking the Socca Warriors to their first big show. A coaching veteran who has made stops in Spain, Mexico, Turkey, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia and the Netherlands, he's known for his soft style and good communication skills with his players.

This team is far from Beenhakker's powerful Ajax of the 1970s or Real Madrid of the '80s, but it's no stranger to scoring goals. Yorke and Latapy in particular offer physical strength, experience and natural talent for finding the net. They are skilled beyond their years might surprise anyone who doesn't take them seriously.

This is a chance for Trinidad to write a golden page in Caribbean soccer history, which means that this team has nothing to lose and should play relaxed football. All the members of this incarnation of the Socca Warriors know that every goal they score will immortalize them forever in their tiny homeland. With that on their side -- and with a wise and seasoned coach -- they might be a huge surprise.

Group: B (England, Paraguay, Sweden).

Key match in group stage: June 10 vs. Sweden. The Socca Warriors will have a rough ride through a harsh group, but they're looking to make waves early. Their hope is to draw the Swedes, then face England without any pressure and go for the gold against Paraguay, trying to reap a victory there. Four points is the goal, which they figure should be enough to advance -- and shock and awe everyone.

Oddsmakers' line: 750-1.

Projected Starting Lineup

Intercontinental playoff: Trinidad and Tobago vs. Bahrain
How They Got Here

Trinidad and Tobago (ranked No. 56 in the world): Finished fourth in CONCACAF

Bahrain (No. 53): Finished third in Group B in Asia; beat Uzbekistan on away goals when their playoff finished 1-1

Head-to-Head: Believe it or not, they've never met.

How They're Playing

Trinidad and Tobago: In 1990, the Soca Warriors needed a draw at home against the U.S. in their final qualifier to make it to their first World Cup. They lost 1-0. In October they were in a similar situation, knowing they likely needed a win against Mexico in their last game to book passage to that elusive first Cup. This time they got it, thanks to two Stern John goals.

They edged out Guatemala, a team that beat them 5-1, for the playoff spot, despite having an overwhelmingly negative goal difference. That doesn't bode well, but they have been playing better since head coach Leo Beenhakker took over in April (shortly after the Guatemala debacle), and with John and Dwight Yorke up top, T&T has a striker partnership that a lot of teams ranked ahead of it in the FIFA world rankings would gladly take.

Bahrain: Needing a scoreless draw, and with its top two strikers hurt, Bahrain got the result it needed against Uzbekistan, going through on the away goals rule. That demonstrates some resolve and some pluck. Alas, their play prior to that suggests that the Bahrainis are in over their collective head. They advanced to their playoff with Uzbekistan by virtue of finishing third in a four-team group, winning just once in six games.

They have, however, been steadily improving for the past couple of years, advancing to the semifinals of the '04 Asian Cup, where they wowed onlookers all tournament long with their flashy offensive displays. (FIFA named Bahrain the most improved team of 2004.) The defense wasn't so flashy, though, and they lost 4-3 to Japan in the semis. In their last round of World Cup qualifying, they played it much closer to the vest, scoring just four goals and conceding only seven in their six games.

Player to Watch

Trinidad and Tobago: John was the second-leading scorer in CONCACAF during qualifying, netting 12 goals to run his tally to a remarkable 64 in 89 games for his country. Yorke might not be the threat he was with Manchester United, but he can still find the net.

The key performer, though, could be the man who sets them up, midfielder Russell Latapy, whom Yorke recently coaxed out of international retirement. He's 37 and he smokes a pack of butts a day, but the Little Magician, who was on the pitch for that fateful game against the U.S. in 1989, is still, well, magical. (He's been playing especially well for Falkirk of the Scottish Premier League.) His presence takes some pressure off of Yorke and John -- they can worry less about creating chances and concentrate more on finishing the ones Latapy sets up.

Bahrain: Dynamo Kiev striker Maksim Shatskikh, who missed the second leg of the Uzbekistan playoff, has recovered from the virus that kept him out. But the key for Bahrain could be striker Alaa Hubail, who played sparingly in the first leg and not at all in the second after missing eight months with an injury. I'd be lying if I said I've seen him play, but everywhere you look, someone is calling him "talismanic," which is a good thing. And he was the co-leading scorer in the '04 Asian Cup.

The Call

If Bahrain reverts to its freewheeling ways -- its last two games in the '04 Asian Cup featured 13 goals and three dismissals -- this could be better than anything UEFA has to offer. Trinidad and Tobago definitely benefits from playing the first leg at home, since Bahrain faces two transcontinental flights in the space of a week.

Between Bahrain's jet lag and the presence of Latapy, Yorke, John and Beenhakker, T&T should finally make it to its first World Cup. It will win 3-1 at home and draw 2-2 on the road, getting in 5-3 on aggregate.

FIFA appoints security officer for October 12 affair with Mexico
By Shaun Fuentes

Bermuda Football Association General Secretary David Sabir as been appointed by FIFA to serve as the Security Officer for this country’s all important 2006 World Cup qualifying match against Mexico scheduled for the Hasely Crawford Stadium at 8pm on Wednesday October 12.

FIFA made the appointment due to the fact that match holds much significance with the outcome possibly determining the fourth place finisher in CONCACAF to go through to the playoffs with Asia for a World Cup spot.

FIFA Vice President Jack Warner specifically mentioned on Tuesday as well, the extreme importance in ensuring that all security measures are in place for the event.

Sabir will arrive here on October 3 for a site inspection the following day and will depart on October 5 after making his recommendations. He will then return on October 12 “to ensure that all FIFA’s recommendations for safety and security are complied with,” Warner told TTFF Media.

Sabir also gave an outline of the requirements for the “Big Match” on October 12 for which 24,000 tickets will be on sale at $200 (covered stands) and $100 (uncovered).

“It is imperative that the following personnel review these Guidelines ahead of my visit and come to the meeting prepared to outline what will be in place for the match.  Please advise all concerned that FIFA has taken a decision that requires our utmost assurance that the highest safety and security standards are deployed for this match,” Sabir stated

Among the guidelines stated by FIFA include : Police - Roads leading to and around the stadium (traffic control); Cordon around the stadium (crowd control, required number of officers); Stadium Security - Gate management (ticket control); VIP Entrance; Internal Security (crowd control and Venue management); Communication Officer - Venue announcements in case of emergency situations, etc; First Aid Personnel-  Available to spectators and players (in case of emergency)

Event coordinator Peter O’Connor stressed that all will be done to ensure that the event is a well managed one.

“Nothing will be taken for granted and the public and most importantly the teams should be made to feel safe come October 12. We have had good working relationships with the various services as the Police, Fire and Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force and we expect no less, especially for this occasion,” O’Connor said.

The match on October 12 will play on the same day that Guatemala (eight points), also vying for the fourth place, will be meeting Costa Rica in Guatemala City. Before that, T&T (seven points) will take on Panama in Panama City on October 8 while Guatemala will travel to Mexico on the same day.

Meantime, the teams battling for the CONCACAF fourth spot will meet either Bahrain or Uzbekistan which are currently locked in battle for the Asian fifth spot.
The playoff between Uzbekistan and Bahrain is to be replayed next month

FIFA have confirmed that European referees Massimo Busacca of Switzerland and Graham Poll of England will be in charge of the playoff between the two countries.  Busacca will be the man in the middle when the teams meet in a replay of the first leg in Tashkent on October 8, while Poll will officiate in the second leg in Manama four days later.

FIFA decided that the tie would be replayed after a technical error by referee Toshimitsu Yoshida during the original first leg in Tashkent on September 3. Yoshida disallowed a penalty converted by Server Djeparov in the first half for encroachment but then erroneously awarded an indirect free-kick to Bahrain instead of a retake of the penalty.

Uzbekistan protested the decision, requesting that they be awarded a 3-0 win, but FIFA decided to void the result, a 1-0 win for the Uzbeks, and ordered that the whole tie be replayed in October,

The first leg at Tashkent’s Pakhtakor Stadium on October 8 will kick off at the same time as the original match at 17:05 hrs, but due to the Islamic fasting month, the second leg at Bahrain’s National Stadium in Manama will now be played at 22:00 hrs.
Then the winner will then travel to CONCACAF to meet the fourth place team from this region on November 12 before the return leg in Asia four days later.

Allyuh men better be on your best behaviour for this one
