Football / T&T - CFU champions in 1988 - any info?
« on: February 01, 2010, 07:46:03 PM »
According to the archives of the Jamaica Gleaner, Trinidad & Tobago won the CFU Championship in July 1988.  The finals were held in Martinique, and the hosts, Antigua & Barbuda, T&T and one other unknown team took part.  I think Trinidad & Tobago beat Martinique 3-0 in the final.

In the 1st round of qualifying, Trinidad & Tobago beat Barbados 4-0 away (2 goals by Jones, 1 by Charles and 1 by Lewis) and 5-1 at home.  I think there was also a 2nd round of qualifying.  Does anybody have any more information?

The draw for the 2011 Women's World Cup qualifiers (Caribbean Zone) has been made by CFU, but for some reason they are keeping it a secret from the press.  The matches were due to start on 23rd January, but I'm not sure if that is still the case.  The draw is as follows for the CFU section.  I presume that USA, Mexico and Canada will get a bye to the final CONCACAF stage, and there will also be Central American qualification system.  I think also that Jamaica may have received a bye because of their Top 4 placing in the last CONCACAF tournament, because they are not listed in the draw for the CFU section.

Group A: Cuba, Guyana, Saint Vincent & the Grenadines, Suriname

Group B: Dominica, Puerto Rico, Saint Kitts & Nevis, Trinidad & Tobago

Group C: Antigua & Barbuda, Saint Lucia, United States Virgin Islands

Group D: Dominican Republic, Haiti, Turks & Caicos Islands

Group E: Anguilla, Barbados, Grenada

Matches were originally meant to be played on a home-and-away basis in each group, but Guyana has since been given permission to host the whole of Group A from 17th-21st March 2010 (meaning 6 matches instead of 12).

The top 2 teams from Groups A and B along with the top teams from Groups C, D and E will qualify for the next stage along with the best placed team among the runners-up from Groups C, D and E.

Football / Trinidad & Tobago v Guyana today in Couva?
« on: June 04, 2008, 03:54:50 PM »
June 4th, from Guyana Football Federation website:

The Guyana national football team will play a friendly match against the Trinidad and Tobago Soca Warriors today at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva from 4.00pm, a press release from the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) said yesterday. The practice game was agreed to by GFF Technical Director Jamaal Shabazz and Trinidad and Tobago Columbia-born Coach Francisco Maturana who, according to the release was very impressed with the Guyanese talent playing in T&T.
T&T played England, last Sunday and are using this match to prepare for their friendly international versus Jamaica on Saturday.

Match should be about finished by now if it played, anybody have any more news of this?

Football / Trinidad & Tobago football - missing historical results
« on: April 29, 2008, 02:15:42 PM »
Hello everyone, and congratulations for a great site.  I'm currently researching the history of the Shell Caribbean Cup and the CFU Nations Cup.  There were a number of results missing, but I have managed to fill a few in over the past weeks.  I'd like to ask if anybody could help me find the missing results involving Trinidad & Tobago.  I've already e-mailed TTFF and received no response, so I was hoping someone here may be able to access some newspaper archives or something similar.   Anyway, here are the matches in question:

1978 CFU Nations Cup qualifier (first CFU Nations Cup)
20-08-78 - Trinidad & Tobago 2-4 French Guiana
The Trinidad & Tobago coach lost his job after this result, but Trinidad & Tobago somehow went through to the next round.  They may have won the return leg in French Guiana by 3 goals or more, but I can't find any information.  Whatever happened, they were named as hosts for the Final tournament in the end - so this may have saved them from exiting the tournament.

2 match results are unknown from the final tournament

I'd really appreciate it if somebody could help or knew somebody else who may be able to help.  I'm sure these amtches must have been reported in the Trinidad press at the time.  I managed to find a lot of the Trinidad match reports in the Jamaica Gleaner newspaper, so I'd expect the Trinidad press would be more interested in the games of its own national team and may have reported on the games.

Thanks for your time.
