Bodyguard wears Young Kings crown
By SEAN DOUGLAS Wednesday, February 7 2007

The Government is in trouble over crime, young calypsonians are not afraid to say so, and the singers are putting their faith in God.

Those were the messages coming out of the Young Kings Calypso Monarch Competition held on Monday night at St James Ampitheatre by the National Action Cultural Committee (NACC).

The 21 performers sang at a very high standard offering a variety of styles, many backed by entrancing dancers and lively actors.

Dressed as a pastor, Bodyguard (Roger Mohammed) amused all with his song “Ungrateful” which took aim at an unnamed public figure (guess who!) referred to as “you ungrateful pastor” for espousing religious thoughts while the population was suffering poverty.

“When we say the smelter will kill we, You say ‘no, God is a Trini,”’ he offered and the judges got the message, rewarding him with the 2007 Young Kings crown.

Mr King awakened the crowd in the wee hours with his anti-crime ragga-styled anthem, “Borderline,” singing, “Let me hear it from the people in the ghetto, Badness out of style.”

It was such a treat for patrons to hear this true master. Is it kaiso? Is it even Trini music? That’s for the experts to determine, but all we can say is that his delivery was totally compulsive and his lyrics told a story and gave a message. It was an unexpected but delightful treat to savour. Already the 2007 Stars of Tomorrow calypso monarch, Roderick “Chucky” Gordon made some good points to warn about the pitfalls of a bandit’s life in “Street Justice”, as he was accompanied by the powerful imagery of actors frozen in dynamic poses. “One for the road is a hitman’s mantra; A nation once more is crucified.”

Mr King and Gordon’s strong performances made it difficult for the judges to separate them, so they both tied for second place.

Also doing his own thing was Anthony Felix singing “Revival.” He deserves full marks for originality and for embracing a variety of singing techniques and styles. He wore the head-wrap of a Bobo Shanti with red-gold-and green wrist-band and gave a deep, touching yet very melodic testament of Rastafarian faith.

“Don’t worry about the pestilence we face, Because the Father’s coming to clean up the place.”

Although at times his voice strayed from sweet singing and soft chanting into a rather harsh rasping, he nevertheless struck a very spiritual vibe throughout the song. In the style of Bob Marley’s prophesising, he even stood up at the front of the stage chanting out an improvised testimony about why he wrote the song.

Sheldon Nugget made a stir when he came on stage dressed as a vagrant for whom he appealed for kindness in his song “Life of the homeless.”.

Duane O’Connor paid tribute to Kelvin “Duke” Pope including his dress-sense in his song “Sartorial Elegance.” “Born a Pope, crowned a king, named a Duke,” effused O’Connor. At the end, Duke appeared on-stage to accept the accolades of the crowd.

Pichakaree champ in Young Kings finals
By SEETA PERSAD Saturday, February 3 2007

The reigning Pichkarie Champion, Jagdeo Phagoo, has joined the calypso bandwagon and is now a finalist at the Young King competition. The event, in which 22 calypsonians will do battle, will take place at the St James Amphitheatre, Western Main Road, St James, on February 5.

Among those who have made it to the finals are Kenson Neptune, Rodriguez Gordon, Roger Mohammed, Patrick Lewis, Anthony Felix, Stephen Marcelle, Cris Garcia, Swallow, Devlin Remero, Jervae Ceasar, Duane O Connor, Walter Taylor, Mr King, Anthony Lincoln, Derrick Seales, Organizer, Jagdeo Phagoo, Richard Remelo, Sheldon Nugget, Jerry Dane Sellier, Emmanuel Trotman, and Peter Cipriani.

Phagoo, from SS Erin Road in Penal, is no stranger to the chutney and pichakaree stage. He has been singing his own compositions for many years now. His new composition, “One Love. One Nation,” earned him a place in this year’s Young Kings finals. His winning tune for Pichakaree, “Dansook Hideum,” was a popular selection that was played on the local frequency. His song, “Football Fever” earned him a place in the National Chutney Soca Monarch finals last year.

According to the first verse of his calypso, “We passing through an era, Ah see some hope at last, This nation coming together, Forgetting bout the past, Ah ray of hope in beaming, Glowing across the land, Races are now uniting, Walking hand in hand, It’s that feeling to be productive, to love, and show good faith, For right here we all have to live, We must co-operate, We must co-operate.”

Phagoo is a contractor with Petrotrin and a businessman.

He has been active in promoting sports and other cultural activities in the Penal area. Apart from this Phagoo, who is a certified International Badminton Federation Coach, managed the Trinidad and Tobago Badmington team from 1987 to 1991. He toured Jamaica, Curacao, Suriname, Guyana, Peru and the United States during this time.

The gifted individual is also an accomplished musician having mastered the harmonium, mandolin and the keyboard. He has given up coaching for the time being and has since settled to doing composing and singing.

“I am very interested in calypso and I intend to join a tent and promote my calypsos in the future. As a singer/composer living in this country, I feel the need to experiment on the different stages,” he said. He is well known for doing dramatic performances while on stage. For the Young King competition he will be presenting one of his dramatic stints complete with props.

He is already working on a tune to defend his crown at Pichakaree which will be held later on in February.

Phagoo remains one of the talented sons of Penal who is taking his message to the people through his songs.

Joseph Hill, the lead singer for the seminal Jamaican roots reggae group Culture and a man once hailed as a "founding fathers of black consciousness," has died unexpectedly while on tour in Europe.

Hill, 57, was with the group in Berlin when he fell ill suddenly on Saturday morning and died, according to his daughter, Andrea. The Jamaica Gleaner newspaper said he died from liver failure.

Hill spent 27 years at the helm of Culture, regarded as one of reggae's fundamental bands.

"He was truly among the greats when it comes to reggae music. The music has lost a stalwart," reggae singer Ken Boothe told the Jamaican Star newspaper.

"Culture made a great contribution to the development of reggae music."

Hill's music career began in 1972 when he joined the Soul Defenders as a percussionist.

However, he became most famous with Culture, originally called the African Disciples. The group consisted of Hill, Albert Walker and Kenneth Dayes, who left the group in the 1990s and was replaced by Telford Nelson.

Two Sevens Clash, released in 1976, was Culture's most influential record, gaining wide popularity in Jamaica and Britain. The album was a collection of songs written in repudiation of the Jamaican government's state of emergency called that year.

Hill wrote Culture's most famous songs, including Natty Never Get Weary, I'm Not Ashamed, This Train, International Herb and Two Sevens Clash.

Radio Jamaica has called Hill "one of the founding fathers of black consciousness."

Culture released 26 albums of original material, most recently  World Peace in 2003.

Culture toured extensively in Africa, Japan, Israel, Britain and Northern Europe.

After Hill's death, the group said on its website that it has cancelled the rest of the European tour. However, the statement said Culture "may perform future concerts with Joseph's son Kenyatta standing in on lead vocals as a tribute to his father."

Makeba’s marriage to Kwame Ture
JOAN RAMPERSAD Monday, July 31 2006

click on pic to zoom inMAriam Makeba (right,) lends an ear to Faith Doreen Radebe (left), South African High Commissioner to Trinidad and Tobago.....« prev photo next photo »SOUTH AFRICAN singer Mariam Makeba, affectionately known as “Mama Africa” has been chosen by the Emancipation Support Committee (ESC) to be the recipient of its third Hemley Sylvester Award for excellence. This was was presented to Professor Abdoulaye Wade, President of Senegal in 2004, and last year to Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, President of Nigeria.

This was stated by Asha Khambon yesterday, during the press conference held at the Courtyard Marriott to present the icon of South African music.

Makeba, who is in Trinidad for the Emancipation Day celebrations entered the conference with the aid of a walking stick. She spoke at length about her African people, especially the children, with an abundance of concern about them losing their sense of Africaness to Western cultures.

Now at 74, she said she’s been travelling since the 1950s performing, and even though her heart wants to go on, her bones are telling her “uh uh,” so she’s decided to slow down and try to perform for special occasions and for very special money.

Makeba then told of her “Makeba Centre for Girls” and her intention to work more with them. “A German company wants to build more homes like it so that is what I want to concentrate on when I’m home and not singing.” She lamented the fact that even though South Africa has a national flag, blacks still have to fight for economic independence.

Makeba also stated that given what the black South African young girls have to go through to support themselves, she speaks to them every day and advises them, “Think before you leap because HIV/Aids doesn’t discriminate.”

Mama Africa has used her international acclaim to speak out on the rights of women and children particularly those suffering from abuse, incest and HIV/Aids.

She said she also tells the girls, “Don’t be like me, I was married twice. Don’t do that!”

This prompted the question about her marriage to Trinidadian Stokeley Carmichael, who was later known as Kwame Ture, to which she answered, “That’s the best marriage I ever had; and we remained friends after it. I liked him because he was true to his beliefs, and he never sold out up till his death. He was the one who introduced the word Afro American. He was very smart.”

During the conference too, Makeba couldn’t help but sing a song that she said she always did when she felt alone. She said afterwards, “I love to sing; from since a little girl, they never asked me twice to sing. I am happiest when I’m singing.”

The Grammy Award Winner who last performed in Trinidad in 1964, will grace the stage at the Lidj Yasu Omowale Village at the Hasely Crawford Stadium tonight, at a mega concert billed as “In A Night Of African Royalty.”

Makeba will perform with her band for the entire second half of the show, that features in the first half local entertainers Ella Andall and Singing Sandra.

Sean Daniel wins Young Kings title
By ROBIN MORAIS

SEAN DANIEL is this year’s Young Kings Calypso Monarch.

He won the title from a field of 14 contestants on Monday night at the St James Amphitheatre.

Apart from the judges, Daniel won lusty rounds of applause from the large crowd for his tune "True Government."

The large crowd of kaiso lovers at the Amphitheatre in St James felt he had put on a sterling performance to take the title.

His composition dealt with the need for political leaders to have God as their real leader in governing the affairs of the people.

The 21st annual Young Kings competition was organised by the National Action Cultural Committee.

Second place went to Organiser with his hilarious "Trinbago Yankee" which had the crowd in side-splitting laughter. Third place went to the National Calypso Queen, Karene Asche, with her pulsating "Spirit of Fear."

Fourth position was copped by Jervae Caesar singing "Caribbean Woman," and fifth place was taken by Duane O’Connor with "Stand Trinidad and Tobago."

Young calypsonian Roderick Gordon took the sixth position with "Not in Trinbago," and seventh place went to Ras Kommanda with "Rae Ann."

Michael John’s passionate plea for national unity in "Divide and Rule" earned him 12th place in a three-way tie with Lima Calbio and Abbi Blackman.

A number of the calypsos dealt with national unity, the current crime problems affecting the nation, spirituality, corruption and the abuse of power by those in authority.

Despite Richard Mendez giving a good performance of his calypso "Mr Goodman Children," a tune generally appreciated by the audience, he failed to place in the top 12.

The same could also be said for Revealer (Patrick Lewis) who sang "Morality Gone" which dealt with the drastic decline of basic morality in the country over the years.

The results of the top 12 finalists in the Young Kings competition 2006 are as follows:

1st place-Sean Daniel — "True Government"

2nd place-Organiser — "Trinbago Yankee"

3rd place- Karene Asche — "Spirit of Fear"

4th place- Jervae Caesar — "Caribbean Woman"

5th place- Duane O’Connor — "Stand Trinidad and Tobago"

6th place- Roderick Gordon — "Not in Trinbago"

7th place Ras Kommanda —"Ree Ann"

8th place- Marva McKenzie — "Revelation Time"

9th place- Singing Sonia — "Masters of Disguise"

10th place- Sheldon Nugget — "A Woman’s Worth"

11th place- Walter Taylor — "Warrior Song"

12th place- Lima Calbio — "Party in Peace"

12th place- Abbi Blackman — "Reparation Indeed"

12th place- Michael John — "Divide and Rule"

Cro Cro out of Calypso Fiesta

Terry Joseph

Wednesday, February 15th 2006

Three-time National Calypso Monarch Cro Cro is adamant that "some kind of conspiracy" has resulted in his being eliminated from the 30 singers selected for Saturday's Calypso Fiesta, the semi-final round of competition for this year's crown.

"What they are saying by that list of calypsonians selected is that my songs for this year do not even qualify me to be a reserve," Cro Cro fumed. "It couldn't be that I am singing a song that won another competition last year for Independence because I called the president of TUCO to clear the air on that and was given the okay and, in fact, two other calypsonians picked for the semi-final are also singing songs they did at that same competition.

"I therefore have to conclude that it is the other song 'God Don't Sleep' that they do not want in their show, so they eliminate Cro Cro at this level to make sure there is no chance of hearing that song in the Dimanche Gras show. I don't know why I am always in trouble with judges but I believe is because I try to stick to the calypso tradition of singing about social or political issues with a little humour on the side.

"I love to compete. I don't ask any favours because my songs are constructed to elicit conversation. I didn't plan to make any confusion but a lot of people have been calling me to express concern that the songs for which I have been getting so many genuine encores in the tent wasn't good enough for the semi-final," Cro Cro said.

After hearing hundreds of hopefuls nationwide, the Trinbago Unified Calypsonians Organisation (TUCO) yesterday announced the names of 30 semi-finalists and two reserves for Saturday's Calypso Fiesta, the semi-final round of the National Calypso Monarch Competition.

The Fiesta, one of the major events in any Carnival season, again takes place at Skinner Park, San Fernando and is scheduled to get underway from noon.

A number of guest artistes are also on the evening's playbill for a show TUCO president Michael "Protector" Leggerton promises will be "as informative as it is entertaining".

Selected calypsonians are asked to contact TUCO's office for rehearsal details but should appear at NCC-TV tomorrow at 9.30 a.m. to draw for performance positions at Saturday's Fiesta.
