Football / Manu vs Arsenal aka The Empire vs The Imposters!
« on: November 02, 2007, 07:14:44 AM »

Arsenal meet Manchester United at The Emirates on Saturday - and after what the two sides produced last weekend it has all the elements of a truly classic encounter.

Arsene Wenger's side were outstanding at Liverpool while United's win against Middlesbrough made it four goals in four successive games for the champions.

So often big games disappoint, but Arsenal's game at Anfield was of the highest quality and everyone will be hoping the confrontation between the Premier League's top two will live up to the huge expectation.

There will be so many crucial areas but the crux will be this - how will Manchester United cope with Arsenal's brilliant passing game and how will Arsenal cope with Manchester United's brilliant counter-attacking game?

It is a game in which markers will be put down by the winner, if indeed there is a winner.

Arsenal would see victory as confirmation of their growing maturity and of their pedigree as potential title winners. United would see a win as assuming a position of superiority over Arsenal for the time being and also as a statement of intent about their desire to retain the Premier League.

It is not a title decider, but whoever wins will have the other contenders sitting up and taking notice.

There will be battles all over the pitch between players of the highest quality

On the evidence of Arsenal's brilliant display at Liverpool, holding their nerve and sticking firmly to their principles to earn a well-deserved draw, they look serious challengers.

I did have concerns about Arsenal's strength in depth, and the test may still come on that, but they look well-blessed in lots of department and in people like Mathieu Flamini, who looked like he might leave at one point, they have players with versatility.

Arsenal are not going to play well every week, but they have certainly shown they can battle to earn their points, as they did at Liverpool, and even to grind out wins, as they did when they won late on against Sunderland.

They will be put to the test on Saturday, because there will be battles all over the pitch.

In midfield, Cesc Fabregas will be confronted by Owen Hargreaves, while the partnership of Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez will have to try to outwit Kolo Toure and William Gallas.

Arsenal's free-flowing attacking style is guaranteed to bring goals, but they will come up against one of the unsung departments of Manchester United's team.

Wenger said his team "played without the handbrake on" at Anfield - and Ferguson rarely sends out a team that uses reverse gear either.

Much has been made of United's four goals in each of their last four games, but the platform for this improvement in goal return has been laid in defence, where Ferguson's side had a series of crucial 1-0 victories before the goals started to flow and Rooney and Tevez tuned into the same wavelength.

Tevez and Rooney are claiming the headlines and will be a big danger but, when they had a blip of sorts earlier in the season, Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic were superb, along with keeper Edwin van der Sar.

Vidic even chipped in with the sort of crucial late winner at Everton that could be vital when the points are added up at the end of the campaign.

It will be interesting to see how they cope with Arsenal's wonderful passing game, but United will pose threats of their own.

United look very good at the moment, and have great strength in depth all over the park, but Arsenal will be in confident mood. Let's hope it follows on from that outstanding game at Anfield.

Football / Manchester United Emulate 100-Year-Old Scoring Record
« on: October 27, 2007, 10:11:46 AM »

Manchester United have equalled a 100-year-old scoring record, when Sir Alex Ferguson’s side scored four goals against Middlesbrough in the Premiership at Old Trafford on Saturday.

The Red Devils, who won 4-1, had also scored four goals in each of their last three games against – Wigan Athletic, Aston Villa and Dynamo Kiev.

A brace from Carlos Tevez and a goal each from Nani and Rooney quelled the challenge from Gareth Southgate’s side at the Theatre of Dreams.

Ahead of the game, Portuguese winger Cristiano Ronaldo had played down the feat in the offing that was set way back in 1907-08.

"Of course, if you have an opportunity to score more goals you should take it because the fans enjoy the game more and the players' confidence increases," he said.

"But I don't worry about how many goals we get, I am only interested in how many points we get. It could be half-nil for all I care just as long as we win."

Football / Milan's Kaka hails Man Utd's 'Brazilian style'
« on: April 27, 2007, 06:52:30 AM »
(Palos, Tiouches and alll Empire haters .... read and WWEEEP!) :beermug: ::)

AC Milan's Brazilian superstar Kaka believes Manchester United have overtaken Arsenal as the Premiership's most stylish side.

The 25-year-old got a first-hand look at Sir Alex Ferguson's men on Tuesday as his side crashed 3-2 at Old Trafford in a thrilling Champions League semi-final first leg.

Kaka was arguably the star of the show with a first-half brace, but he saw enough of United to convince him they would not look out of place at Rio's famous Maracana.

'I watch the Premiership and I see Manchester United in England as the most Brazilian-like in their style,' he told the Daily Telegraph.

'Obviously, Ronaldo and Rooney are very skilful, but they all play well with the ball on the floor.

'They play the passing game. They did not use any long balls against us.

'People always say that Arsenal play a Brazilian style of football, but I think Manchester United are more Brazilian in their way of playing than the Arsenal players are.'

Kaka also hailed United's fans for their vocal performance on Tuesday night.

'I was particularly impressed with the singing of the Manchester fans at half-time, especially as their team was 2-1 down,' he added.

'This is one of the great things about Premiership fans. They have such passion for their team. I love that kind of atmosphere.'

The Champions League's top scorer this season has predicted an equally attacking second leg when the sides reconvene on Wednesday night at the San Siro.

Kaka said: 'The two teams are very similar, both very strong, who both espouse an attacking brand of football.

'We are two teams who instinctively like to come forward and attack. I think the combination of the teams makes it a joy to watch.

'You could never hold back and settle for a draw against a team like Manchester United.

'The second leg will be an exciting match, because it would always be this way whenever these two teams of players meet.

'But we are going to go for the kill in the San Siro, to win outright.'

Football / Injury-ravaged United prepare for Milan
« on: April 23, 2007, 06:50:48 AM »

:( :(  Has to be a curse!  Must the doing of Palos the Ultimate Manu hater!

Sir Alex Ferguson had only 10 senior outfield players available at the start of Manchester United's final training session ahead of Tuesday's Champions League semi-final first leg against AC Milan.
With Rio Ferdinand ruled out for a fortnight after aggravating his groin injury against Middlesbrough at the weekend, Ferguson is already condemned to fielding a makeshift defence against the six-times winners at Old Trafford.

And his hopes of having Patrice Evra available are now in doubt after the Frenchman was part of a small group, including Kieran Richardson, Louis Saha and Nemanja Vidic, who trained separately from the main group of senior players.

Man Utd must pip Chelsea - Waddle
By Simon Austin

Ferguson has won trophies the hard way - by entertaining

Chris Waddle
Former England winger Chris Waddle hopes Manchester United beat Chelsea to the major trophies this season "for the good of football".

The teams meet in the Premiership and FA Cup final next month and could also contest the Champions League final.

"For the good of football you need entertainers to succeed," Waddle, who won 62 England caps, told BBC Sport.

"I think it would be better for the game if United won the trophies because of the way they've played this season."

Waddle added: "People obviously take notice if you're winning things. If Chelsea win three or four trophies, people will think that's the way to play.

"Chelsea are a no-risk team and I don't get out of my seat watching them.

 606: DEBATE
Are Man Utd more deserving champions?

"In contrast, watching United encourages young kids to dribble and to entertain. Our country is desperately short of this type of player."

Waddle also believes Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho cannot be classed as a "truly great manager" because of the football his side play.

"He doesn't like flair, he likes machines," said Waddle. "Fitness, strength and organisation are the key things for Mourinho.

"A lot of people will say this means he can't be classed a great manager, even though he has been tremendously successful and has achieved a great deal.

"Of course, he can turn round and put two fingers up and say 'I've won the trophies'.

"But it's a lot easier to stop teams entertaining than to play entertaining football.

CHELSEA v MAN UTD MAY SHOWDOWNS
9 May: Premiership (Stamford Bridge)
19 May: FA Cup final (Wembley)
23 May: Champions League final? (Olympic Stadium, Athens)

"This is why Manchester United's Alex Ferguson and Arsenal's Arsene Wenger are great, great managers. They've won trophies the hard way - by entertaining.

"Ferguson has always entertained, mainly by playing two wide men who can produce magic.

"Think of Lee Sharpe, Andrei Kanchelskis, Ryan Giggs and Cristiano Ronaldo - they're unpredictable players who the fans love to watch.

"Ferguson and Wenger have got the philosophy right and won trophies with entertaining football."

Waddle says Mourinho should have produced more entertaining football because of the millions given to him by Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich.

"The majority of teams in the lower leagues play a percentage game," stated Waddle.

"They succeed by being well-organised, playing at a high tempo and getting the ball forward quickly.

For the money and resources Chelsea have had, I think they should entertain more

Chris Waddle

"You can understand that because they don't have the resources to buy people like Cristiano Ronaldo. Players of that quality are hard to find.

"For the money and resources Chelsea have had, I think they should entertain more.

"Mourinho can turn round and say 'I've got Arjen Robben, Shaun Wright-Phillips and Salomon Kalou' but he takes them off all the time.

"He doesn't seem to want that type of player. If Robben was playing for Arsenal or Manchester United he would be unbelievable. He would be in the same class as Ronaldo by now.

"He needs a run of 10 games and to be told 'go out and enjoy it'. It's a confidence thing. Under Mourinho, if Robben loses the ball once or twice, he knows he's coming off."

There has been widespread speculation that Mourinho could leave Stamford Bridge at the end of the season - largely because the rumours suggest Abramovich wants to see "champagne football" played by his team.

Waddle said: "Abramovich has probably thought everything is going well apart from the entertainment.

"Apart from when they score, he never stands up. I bet he's not on the edge of his seat very often.

"When everyone is raving about Manchester United and Barcelona, he's probably thinking 'why can't we play like that?'

"Even if Manchester United or Arsenal don't win, you know you'll see moments of brilliance that could be worth the entrance fee alone.

"But, saying all that, the fans would be up in arms if Mourinho went because of the number of trophies he has won at Chelsea."

Manchester United 6-1 Arsenal, 25 February 2001

Having lost his first-team place, Dwight Yorke was determined to make the most of his inclusion in the starting 11 for what was essentially the title decider of 2000/01.

Just three minutes in, Yorke pounced on a pass into the box from Beckham after Scholes, dummying, had allowed the ball to run on. Henry pulled one back on 15 minutes but within three minutes Yorke was at it again. Using his pace to beat the offside trap he ran onto a pass from Keane and sent the ball beneath the body of Seaman. He needed only four more minutes to complete his hat-trick, a quicksilver first touch allowing him to swivel onto a 40-yard ball from Beckham before tapping it past Seaman. Further strikes from Keane, Solskjaer and Sheringham finished the job and left United 16 points clear at the top.

Patrice Evra's move to Manchester United has moved a step closer to completion after David Gill held talks in Monaco.

United's chief executive flew to the Principality on Thursday and met with both Monaco and the player's representative Frederico Pastorello.

Evra's move is now being described as some '75 percent' complete and Pastorello predicts Monday should see the move finalised.

"We had a meeting in my office with David Gill and Monaco as the two clubs and us talked," Pastorello told skysports.com.

"It went very well and we expect something to be done by the weekend, you could say it is 75 percent done.

"There are a few details to sort out about the deal but by Monday we would hope to be in a position to finalise things.

"We also need time to think about a few things with the contract and the details of the deal."

Pastorello admits that United's have been able to fend off Italian giants Internazionale.

"United have been quicker and shown more urgency and because of this it has fascinated Patrice and he has no doubts that Manchester is the place to go," he continued.

"Inter were not really ready to meet Monaco's asking price, but I think Patrice's decision has already been made."

Football / John dreaming of Germany
« on: November 08, 2005, 12:58:59 PM »
 :rotfl:

Fulham striker Collins John says he is dreaming of travelling to the World Cup with Marco van Basten's Holland squad.

The exciting youngster has already earned two caps for the Oranje and has started the current campaign in impressive form, grabbing three goals from five Premiership appearances.

Further progression could grant him added openings under former Milan hero van Basten, although Holland currently boast a wealth of striking talent at their disposal.

As well as established figures such as Roy Makaay and Ruud van Nistelrooy, van Basten has been keen to introduce Feyenoord hot-shot Dirk Kuyt and gifted youngsters in the shape of Arsenal's Robin van Persie and Ajax's Ryan Babel.

Despite the strong competition for places, Liberian-born John is desperate to play for his adopted country in the finals in Germany next summer.

"I have already got two caps," said John.

"It would be a dream to play in the World Cup for the country that has helped me and my family."

you all are overreacting.  If the Bahrain team had checked into a hotel in T&T 8 days before the game, what would your reactions have been?  Its the same way they could have checked into a resort in Jamaica, Bahamas, Barbados etc in order to get used to the climate.

Based on the article Boxhill called Jack before he made a decision and Jack gave his blessing.  Suh again let me ask ... "whats the big deal?"

I recall Simoes taking our team into Mexico way before a WCQ game, the same time there was a bust up with Torrez Nesta (if thats how its spelt).  Did the Mexicans complain about selling out themselves?

Allyuh don't find it strange that all of a sudden Jack mek a U Turn?  Have you forgotten that both Jack and the former JFF president , who happens to want back the position are very close friends?

The people of Bahrain are taking steps to prepare for you, I even see a few of them posting here, I suggest unuh focusing on the task at hand.  You all have 2 more hurdles to clear in order to qualify, concentrate on that and stop getting emotional about Jamaicans.  As a matter of fact, one Trini ite posted on this site that we could play Bahrain in a friendly ... a far reached thought ... and now it is materializing everybody up in arms.

You guys have your path to follow and we have ... well we need to find one.  Explain how playing this game is a sellout?  Afterall, when we played Guatemala nobody saw it as a sellout.
