Cardiff City release Ben Turner and Kenwyne Jones in clearout

Cardiff City have released defender Ben Turner and striker Kenwyne Jones.

The duo join goalkeeper Joe Lewis, forward Etien Velikonja and midfielder Filip Kiss in departing the Bluebirds, along with four under-21 players.

Turner, 28, joined the Bluebirds in August 2011 and scored a last minute equaliser in the 2012 League Cup Final against Liverpool at Wembley.

He played 31 games for Cardiff in the Premier League in 2013-14 and made 121 appearances for the club in total.

Trinidad and Tobago international Jones joined the Bluebirds in a swap deal involving Peter Odemwinge in January 2014.

However, Jones was allowed out on loan this season and said at the time he had been offered 'no deal' to stay at Cardiff City Stadium.

In January he joined Al Jazira in the United Arab Emirates on loan until the end of the season.

Lewis, 28, joined on a free transfer from Peterborough United in 2012 but made only five senior appearances and had loan spells with Blackpool and Fulham.

Slovenia international striker Velikonja joined Cardiff on a four-year deal in July 2012 but failed to score in five first team games for the Bluebirds

Slovakian Kiss joined Cardiff on loan from SK Slovan Bratislava in July 2011 before the deal was made permanent 12 months later.

The 25-year-old spent two loan spells at Ross County and also spent a season on loan with Norwegian side.

Cardiff have also released Jazzi Barnum-Bobb, Abdi Noor, Tyler Roche and Curtis Watkins from their developmental side.

However, extensions have been offered to Luke O'Reilly, Elijah Phipps, Jamie Veale, Macauley Southam, David Tutonda, Ashley Baker, Dylan Rees, Tom James, Robbie Patten, Tommy O'Sullivan and Theo Wharton.

Jamie Bird, Rhys Abbruzzese, Lloyd Humphries and Rollin Menayese have all been offered their first professional contracts.

Anyone know what's happening with KJ now?  He's left Al Jazira - has he returned to the UK? No news of anyone showing interest or even of him being available.

His loan ended, he should go back to Cardiff.
In my opinion he could easily play in MLS and be one of the top scorers, he's a very physical player so he would fit perfectly on the league. The problem is his salary is too high, I don't think any MLS club would pay like $2mi for him. He's not too famous and already 31 years old. If he accepts a huge paycut to earn like $800k I guess he'll receive some offers.

Cardiff released him on 23rd May.  MLS seems like the logical move, but there's been no news of any club showing interest as far as I am aware?

Yes, always been this way, and no sign of change.

Found this article today:

"Mossad-linked Israeli law firm loses anti-BDS case in US labour tribunal".

I can't find any coverage of this in mainstream US media.

This is also interesting, in relation to my observation yesterday about legislative/legal attempts to silence the BDS movement and similar organisations:

General Discussion / Israel's occupation of Palestine
« on: January 21, 2016, 10:21:53 AM »
Israel's occupation of Palestine is a subject that has always irked me.  Israel continues to seize and occupy land, displace Palestinians, torture, abuse and kill civilians and while there is international condemnation, there is no international action.

In today's news, it is revealed that Israel will shortly be appropriating another 380 acres in the Jordan Valley, the largest land seizure since August 2014:

http://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-israel-palestinians-idUKKCN0UZ1A0

http://news.yahoo.com/israel-confirms-plans-seize-west-bank-land-101044942.html

The BDS movement has sought to hold Israel accountable by encouraging boycotts of Israeli goods/services, but I've read that many governments are passing laws which effectively make it illegal to support the BDS and similar movements, on the basis that they are "anti semitic".  It is clear that, in the US in particular, Israel enjoys a great deal of support, regardless of their actions and the condemnation of the rest of the international community.  In fact, there have been at least 40 instances since 1972 that the US has vetoed UN Security Council resolutions aimed at condemning/holding Israel responsible for it's actions.  Most seem willing to ignore Israel's nuclear capability as well.

This question is directed mainly at members resident in the US - What would you say is the general attitude of the average American to the situation in Palestine?  I ask because I get the impression that the vast majority of American citizens are "pro-Israel".  The fact that the US arms Israel and provides aid to the tune of billions of US dollars per year seems to support this.  I have read about pro-Palestine organisations in the US, but I get the impression that they are small and largely unsupported/ignored.  Looking at the most popular American news channels - Fox (Faux?) News etc - the Israeli agenda appears to be very forcefully promoted as well.

Warriors blank CFU final over $10m wage dispute.
By Rhondor Dowlat (Guardian).

BOYCOTT!

T&T’s Soca Warriors last night decided to boycott tonight’s CFU Caribbean Football Cup final against Jamaica over the non-payment of salaries and arrears, amounting to an estimated $10 million, owed to them by the T&T Football Association (TTFA).

Speaking to the T&T Guardian from Jamaica last night, skipper Kenwyne Jones said the decision may very well mean this will be the last time fans will see this team.

Jones said the team, which had already qualified for the Concacaf Gold Cup by virtue of reaching the final, realised they were taking a drastic measure. But he said they had had enough of promises and lies. “It always affects the situation and it has been going on for a very long time,” an upset Jones said.

“We are fed up of the football association making promises and telling a lot of untruths. No one wants to be a part of football and we are in a position that is not even at breaking point. It could very well be the end of a dynasty before it could get there.”

The England-based striker admitted that coach Stephen Hart was on the brink of leaving Jamaica to return to Canada with his family on Sunday because he was frustrated that thousands of dollars owed to him had not yet been paid. He said the players and technical staff also faced the same dilemma, noting some of them had not been paid for years.

Contacted on the matter yesterday, TTFA general secretary Sheldon Phillips confirmed the team was owed millions. He said a Cabinet note was passed about two weeks ago approving a sum of $10 million. That sum, he said, will be to pay the debt and take the Soca Warriors through to the Gold Cup next year.

“We sent a note to Cabinet explaining the situation and the millions of dollars we owed,” Phillips said. “We are now in the process of getting those funds drawn down. We were promised part last week and got nothing. When we enquired we were told today (Monday) and still nothing.”

Phillips said he was doing all he could to get the money to pay the team. We are dealing with a lot, including having a new permanent secretary at the Ministry of Sport. “We have been liaising with the ministry for months now and happy that we actually got this breakthrough of the $10 million.

Payment is imminent though.” He in 2012 they were already $4 million in arrears to the team. He said he hoped the players were despondent to the point that it would affect the final. “Understandably, they are dealing with this for a long time but I am pushing very hard to address this as soon as possible.”

Players have bills too

But speaking from the team’s camp in Kingston yesterday, Jones said Hart has been owned money for a period of eight months, the staff for more than eight months and the players for about four years.

“That figure may vary per player. Some are owed $30,000 and $40,000,” he said. “The coach has his family to see about, bills to pay. We, the players, need payment too. Most of them say they will leave and never return to play for T&T again because of this overbearing situation. We tried to hold it together but can’t again.”

Political Leader of the People’s National Movement (PNM), Dr Keith Rowley, during a speech at the party’s convention on Sunday, raised the issue of the non-payment of wages and lack of funding for both the men’s and women’s football team.

He said: “We could find hundreds of millions, just so, to feed crime in LifeSport and inflate contracts to enrich friends, but at the same time our national women’s football team is penniless in a foreign land and the men’s team have played without pay, match after match. Have we no shame? This simply cannot be allowed to continue.”

Efforts to reach TTFA president Raymond Tim Kee and Minister of Sport Dr Rupert Griffith for comment last night wee unsuccessful as calls to their cellphones went unanswered and they did not return messages.

Cocaine pear juice death: Cole Cold Pear-D warning

A Royal Navy veteran has died after drinking a pear juice drink laced with cocaine.

Police said Joromie Lewis, 33, of Hampshire, became ill immediately after trying a small amount of the Cole Cold Pear-D drink last Thursday.

He died within hours at Southampton General Hospital.

Officers said Mr Lewis thought the drink, from the Caribbean, was genuine, but they believe the bottle may have been used to bring drugs into the UK.

Quote
The official said the keyword and other terms were “very precise” to minimize the number of innocent American communications that were flagged by the program. At the same time, the official acknowledged that there had been times when changes by telecommunications providers or in the technology had led to inadvertent overcollection. The N.S.A. monitors for these problems, fixes them and reports such incidents to its overseers in the government, the official said.

------

“There is an ambiguity in the law about what it means to ‘target’ someone,” Mr. Edgar, now a visiting professor at Brown, said. “You can never intentionally target someone inside the United States. Those are the words we were looking at. We were most concerned about making sure the procedures only target communications that have one party outside the United States.”

------

The senior intelligence official argued, however, that it would be inaccurate to portray the N.S.A. as engaging in “bulk collection” of the contents of communications. “ ‘Bulk collection’ is when we collect and retain for some period of time that lets us do retrospective analysis,” the official said. “In this case, we do not do that, so we do not consider this ‘bulk collection.’ ”

You need to follow your discussion more closely Bakes.  You said "There is no evidence that "personal data" is being collected" and "The email program doesn't even apply to US Citizens or residents".  Kounty posted an article in which an admission is made to the contrary (albeit dressed up with nicities such as "inadvertent overcollection").  Your observation was therefore erroneous.

I find the final two paragraphs of the article very interesting:

"...the US government, in its rush to spy on everybody, may end up killing our most productive industry," she wrote in a blogpost. "Lavabit may just be the canary in the coal mine." "

@Pur_Trini just a note that obama didn't even request assistance from putin on the snowden case retorting when asked that "he shouldn't have to". what exactly this mean? he expeck russia to fall in line - kneel and genuflect? that is an odd statement particularly from someone that is routinely described as a great orator. i don't think obama is nearly as astute (or interested) in foreign policy as he get credit for. biden was supposed to be the big international man; obama frankly eh ready for putin. and this does not bode well for the shaping of US relations with china which need urgent attention after years of neglect with all the middle east issues transpiring. is tantrum or silent treatment - either way, obama only making bitch move.  :frustrated:

I agree completely.  Mr. Obama's "I shouldn't have to" statement reeks of hypocracy and (with the greatest respect to Mr. Obama's administration) sheer stupidity.

You may find this to be an interesting take on the situation:

Obama Snubs, Russia Laughs, Putin Wins

"Obama won't see Putin because Putin is already seeing Snowden."   :rotfl:

Bakes, I cannot share a view that given the "lack of progress on issues such as missile defense and arms control, trade and commercial relations, global security issues, and human rights and civil society in the last twelve months" and having "so far not found a way to co-operate on terms that benefit both (the US and Russia)" a productive solution is to postpone talks.

"We can't agree so I don't want to talk to you" screams childish tantrum to me and while it is inevitable that the Obama administration would have to offer some kind of excuse validating their decision, it was also inevitable in all of the circumstances that the excuse would be a poor one.

Edit: As for the "I have no patience for countries that try to treat gays or lesbians or transgender persons in ways that intimidate them or are harmful to them" lark, that's a bit rich coming from the US - a country whose "idea of what is torture...does not appear to coincide with that of most civilized nations".

That is yuh own ignorance talking there boss.  The US has not said they won't continue to hold talks with Russia, and in fact no one, but you apparently, believe that they have broken off talks.  The US has said they see no point to a SUMMIT at this juncture.  They will show up and pappyshow for the cameras... and what?  The point, whether you agree with it or not is that Putin needs the face to face meeting, and on Russian soil at that, for his own political reasons, and it is entirely fair to deny him that platform when he's as intransigent, and even provocative as he has been, without reason.  Obama don't need to kiss Putin ass.

As for the non-sequitur on gays and torture.  Obama might not have completely disassembled Bush's torture program, but US interrogation techniques under his watch have hardly been of the Abu Ghraib variety such as to render his stance hypocritical... as you suggest.

You appear to have missed the entire point, Bakes, although I suspect this is more a matter of convenience than ignorance on your part (I may be wrong).  I did not say that the US would not continue to hold talks with Russia.  It is clear (perhaps to everyone but you) that the entire discussion, which stemmed from the BBC article I posted, is about - as the headline of the article clearly states - the decision of the Obama administration to "cancel Putin meeting over Snowden asylum".  To quote the White House statement:

"We believe it would be more constructive to postpone the summit until we have more results from our shared agenda" (my emphasis).

This validates perfectly my observation that the decision to "cancel Putin meeting over Snowden asylum" is tantamount to saying "we can't agree, so I don't want to talk to you".

If you are surprised that I have adopted this viewpoint, then I suggest you pay attention to the various news articles being published internationally on the subject.  You will find it is a view that is shared by a number of critics.

Turning to your comment in respect of gays and torture, in the first instance I would advise that if you are going to use Latin it would be helpful if you used it appropriately.  Secondly, if you believe the statement "US interrogation techniques under (Mr. Obama's) watch have hardly been of the Abu Ghraib variety" gives the US a basis on which to claim the moral high ground, then more power to you!

Again, your reply was a big smoke screen.

I don't blame the JP players who hassle you, they want to play Pro football. I get the same from other Pro teams, please do not feel Central is a special case, you are new to this Dolphin boy.

So Adams is good enough for a Hungarian champion club but not good enough for a fete match club with a slave driver as a coach playing in a pro league, that is very interesting. Central FC good enough to win the league then?

We wanted to sign him once and he claimed he was a free agent until David Williams stepped in.

Central FC: "This a stick up, give me all your players for free Tobago"

Again, DickSplash , you're in a fantasy world. What is the smoke screen? You made an incorrect statement, I corrected it. Oh, yeah, you guys can't handle concepts such as truth and honesty.
I'm amazed that JP are getting all these ProLeague players begging you and you're still a second rate Super League team. And don't give me all this past history about JP. Now you're boyfriends not allowed to even say the word football, the club can't function.
If you have a gripe with David John Williams, take it to him - I don't want to hear your bitching.
And, of course, the concept of doing legitimate business it alien to you and your mate, so I don't expect you to understand it.
Anyway, have a nice day.

I can't believe you took the time to respond to Horner.  He's either very stupid (like his namesake Jack) or is looking to get a reaction out of people by pretending to be very stupid.  Either way, he is not worth the effort you have made.

Obama cancels Putin meeting over Snowden asylum

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/23605507

Contrary to your characterization of the decision as a childish tantrum... here's a much more intelligent and nuanced take on the situation by the BBC's own analyst:

"Relations between Washington and Moscow were not good, with divisions over a range of issues - not least Syria - even before the fugitive US intelligence contractor Edward Snowden pitched up at Sheremetyevo airport in Moscow. They certainly have not got any better since the Russian authorities granted him temporary in the country.

If Mr Snowden had gone swiftly on his way, then this might have remained just another irritant in US-Russia relations. But now the Americans have felt compelled to respond. That is going to make the G20 gathering itself in St Petersburg a potentially embarrassing affair.

The fallout over the Snowden affair is a symptom of a much more fundamental crisis in US-Russia relations that has continued despite the effort during Mr Obama's first term to "reset" relations with Moscow. These are no longer equivalent powers and they have so far not found a way to co-operate on terms that benefit both."

From the same article: "I have no patience for countries that try to treat gays or lesbians or transgender persons in ways that intimidate them or are harmful to them," Mr. Obama said.

From the NYT:

“Given our lack of progress on issues such as missile defense and arms control, trade and commercial relations, global security issues, and human rights and civil society in the last twelve months, we have informed the Russian government that we believe it would be more constructive to postpone the summit until we have more results from our shared agenda,” Jay Carney, the White House press secretary, said in a statement.

All this having been said... if you have any valid reasons why the US should have still gone ahead with the Summit, then by all means share.

NSA spy leaks: Edward Snowden leaves Moscow airport

US intelligence leaker Edward Snowden has left the Moscow airport where he had been staying since June after being granted temporary asylum.

Mr Snowden's lawyer said he had left after receiving the papers he needed to enter Russian territory from Sheremetyevo Airport's transit zone.

The US has charged Mr Snowden with leaking details of its electronic surveillance programmes.

Russia's decision is likely to further strain its ties with the US.

The BBC's Daniel Sandford in Moscow says a strongly worded US reaction can be expected shortly.

Mr Snowden arrived in Moscow on 23 June from Hong Kong, after making his revelations.

The affair has caused diplomatic ructions around the world, upsetting the United States' close allies and traditional enemies.
