Guyaneseballer, ah know there's a lot you don't know about T&T football, things that has been in the dark for the past ten yrs, first off yuh can't make ah complete comparison with T&T and guyana without getting a lot of things wrong.  first off, for the past ten yrs T&T football was on the decline.

Quote
tuh ad another factor that socapro and all the shabaz lovers failed to comprehend. jammal shabbaz knew most all our players bc @ one time or another he's came up against, or coached some, and played against them on ah consistent basis in the pro league, so he knows their strengths and weaknesses, and all this could play ah factor in that he had ah huge advantage over his opponent, whereas pfister didn't know any guyanese players, their strengths or weakness.

I respect the first points you made about decline in TT football and some of my comparisons which could have been made out of ignorance of TT football. But I think you also have to consider that Shabazz did not know the Bajan and Bermudan players any more than Pfister knew the Guyanese players. Yet GT had a better win/loss record against B'dos and B'muda home and away in the group than TT. Based on that kind of comparison I think its fair to say that Shabazz deserves a lot of credit for his coaching during the whole series. Pfister's assistant and some players on the team would also have known the TT based Guyanese players like Jackie Chan and Boyd. He is the only Caribbean coach to achieve what he achieved, he is Trinidadian (we can't claim him, he is a 100% Trini) and he deserves credit for doing it. From the comments on the forum it looks like Trinidad will not be having a local national coach for the forseeable future, so I think if Shabazz is fully recalled, the next local/Caribbean coach from this group to do it will be a Guyanese coach.

We will just have to respectfully agree to disagree on Shabazz and leave it at that.

the man beat an unprepared disjointed team

You could easily be describing Guyana as well. At least the TT team-mates knew each other, knew where TT was and had played together. The GT team was assembled four days before the match and included some players who had never ever seen nor set foot in Guyana before, much less ever play for Guyana before. Its takes a good coach to decide what to do with them.

Just as a team can only beat the other team placed in front of them so too a coach can only out-coach the opposing coach placed in front of him. If the opposing TT coach is highly rated and paid US$50,000 per month which is equivalent to G$10,000,000 (a sum that could pay all expenses for the whole Guyanese team for a whole year) and the TT players are highly regarded, you could only imagine how motivated the players were to win and how much it depended on Shabazz's coaching talent to make them do it, not because he wanted to knock out TT (that was just a coincidence that TT left it late to the GT game to be a must-win or draw game) but because he wanted to prove that a local coach can do it too. Local Italian coaches like Sacchi (who was a shoe salesman) and Lippi who never played professionally have coached local Italian teams to all kinds of big wins. I guess although Shabazz is no genius he wanted to make his mark and he coached Guyana professionally to a big win. Its one thing to say that you personally do not like the man, its another thing to cuss and criticize the man for winning -  thats what good coaches do.

Its not Shabazz's fault that that coach or TTFF or whoever failed to prepare the players or that the players did not play as you 'expected'. My own view is that on the night both Guyana's coach and players were better. On any other night it might be the reverse but that night it really mattered and they were better.

Finally I would say about Shabazz that you should not only look at the match against TT to see how good he is in this series. He used his team well and out-coached every other coach he faced in all of the other qualifying matches home and away. The enegry of the Guyanese fans helped too. To me a good football coach is many things but he must also be one who knows how to use and motivate the talent at his disposal to win and Shabazz did that, even down to the last game when everyone expected TT to hammer GT by 12 clear goals, they only won 2-0. Credit the players but also credit the coach. It was our time. You are being too harsh on Shabazz personally and ignoring the big picture. It was a must win game. We can go on for days about whether Guyana 'won' the game or TT 'lost' the game but it was that kind of match when team and coach needed to be at their absolute best.

Anyway, with the talent and infrastructure you have, everyone (I talk to) is now expecting TT to rebuild, never make the mistake of underestimating Caribbean opposition teams (and coaches) again, come back stronger and qualify for every single upcoming world cup. Lets see what the future holds.

Guyana has already surpassed expectations. We have a long way to go but for now we are still on the road and football is full of surprising underdog stories, hopefullly we can be one too. For us a brilliant coach and hungry team collectively created history and we are playing as relative unknowns...minnows.

Right now we are like the rank underdog... like 'Buster' Douglas against the Mike Tysons of the group ... those who remember that fight would know that sometimes, thats a good place to be.... because most importantly, we have absolutely nothing to lose.

Sometimes competing against an opponent who has nothing to lose can be the most dangerous battle.

Certainly not this Guyanese. Please don't try to give us Guyanese a bad name brother.

The statement was probably the real deal from the player himself. If it was indeed him I personally think he did the right thing by coming directly on the board and speaking to his fans (even though he had to be defending himself). Too many players get to the point where they cannot make that connection. This guy didn't have to do it but he did it. He appears down to earth, humble and wears his 'warrior' badge on his heart. A player, a team is nothing without fans. Those are the kind of players that fans would support through thick and thin, the kind of players you want the youths to idolize. A player with passion who has reached the heights but still has the common touch....rare!

Give thanks!

One note Are you guys in the hunt for more foreign born players , if so you guys should look in places like Holland where I heard there is a lot of players with  Guyanes link there. Some foreign born good players can help you guys in the next rounds.. Good luck and wish you guys the best.. I believe you guys can get the better of elsalvador and gave CR a scare  but its gonna be rough.. Good luck

I've only heard about Dwayne DeRosario (who plays for Canada) and Jerome Thomas (not sure) but never heard of anyone from the Dutch league or other parts of Europe although I would not be surprised. Hopefully they contact the GFF.

One brother told me Florent Maluda was Guyanese, and always talks about missing his home in 'Guyana' but I checked it out, turns out he is from French 'Guiana'.

Easy way to solve all this problem - If Guyana really want him, make him an offer to be their full time coach so he can have an option to leave the TTFF...No brainer there.

Agreed. Its shambles but no panic here at all its just that they could have worked it out before instead of making it like a reaction kinda 'recall'.

Got some info which maybe they will confirm/deny/clarify. He is currently paid by GFF. They already tried to do this full time coach thing but was not successful. Apparently (as you rightly said) TT needs him more. If so, no problem we will just have to find another 'local' to take his place.

Respect

I just saw this story. Your coach has been sent on leave. Shabazz is recalled. Contract is up. Apparently it  was only for 3 months. The TTFF must have known that during that time he would be leading a team against TT during the group stages and that if the teams succeeds in getting by TT that team will need him (unless they felt that he would coach Guyana to lose against TT or they really underestimated the opposition from Guyana and Bermuda). Now that is the case and hopefully they extend it and don't keep him to replace Otto now or coach the womens team while he has a team to prepare for World Cup matches. The timing and manner of the recall just looks bad, at least they could have all talked about it (GFF,TTFF and Shabazz) and decided on it before the announcement of the recall. Imagine if this had happened to Trinidad, what would you say? how would you feel? We fought on the pitch already we don't need fighting now.

Hopefully good sense will prevail on all sides and the TTFF will show the world why Trinis are professional and not petty people who can deal with losses without losing their heads, who have a heart, who can empathise with the Guyanese people at this historic time for us and to also show that Trinis are not malicious, vengeful and spiteful. In other words, lets settle this quickly please.

Here is the story from one press report

Golden Jaguars head coach Shabazz expected to return to TTFF post
Written by Joe Chapman
Wednesday, 23 November 2011 00:35

foreign coach Otto Pfister sent on leave

THE Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (TTFF) has sent its foreign head coach Otto Pfister on leave even though his contract ends on December 31, for what they have termed official leave; and consequently has recalled the services of Guyana’s head coach, Trinidadian Jamal Shabazz from his loan agreement with the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) according to the Trinidad Express newspaper  recently.

Ironically, it was Trinidadian Shabazz who was instrumental in Guyana’s ousting of the Twin Island Republic from advancing in the Brazil 2014 World Cup, as the Guyanese secured a berth to the third round for the first time ever; and the earth-shattering result for the Trinidadians seems to have taken its toll on the administration of the sport in that country.

That report out of Trinidad and Tobago understandably made it clear and emphatic: "His loan with Guyana is now at an end and he (Shabazz) is expected in the next few days to return to his post with the TTFF. Should he be required again, the TTFF will have to deal with that."

The president of the Guyana Football Federation (ag), Franklyn Wilson, on this apparent new development yesterday morning, said, “Shabazz did not tell us anything. We were in communication up to yesterday.”
When asked if Shabazz was under contract with the GFF, Wilson said, “yes!” but maintained: “I don’t know if they have withdrawn the man, So, I can’t deal with speculation. Shabazz didn’t say that to us.”
Shabazz’s first stint with Guyana’s senior men’s team now popularly known as the Golden Jaguars was from 2005 to 2007, when he took Guyana to its best ever showing in terms of ranking with FIFA, and he returned this year for his second stint.

Meanwhile, Kashif Muhammad, one half of the Kashif and Shanghai duo who first introduced Shabazz to the federation commented, “I heard something like that was mentioned, Jamal didn’t tell me anything about that.”

According to Muhammad: “Last night Jamal and I spoke and our plans continue just as usual. They can’t pull Jamal. He is the GFF’s National Coach.

And when contacted yesterday afternoon Shabazz from his base in Trinidad and Tobago told Chronicle Sport he will be meeting with the TTFF.  He said, “We have a meeting and by tomorrow (Wednesday) then I will be able to speak on the matter.”

He continued that the TTFF has made a statement and he acknowledged that he was on loan for three months with the Guyana Football Federation”

In assessing the progress made Shabazz said “I feel nobody (except) the players perhaps, expected us to reach this far, the third round of the World Cup and I think that is why it was a three-month loan agreement.” He said that this was the second occasion for which he was working with the GFF and he was loud in praise of the staff he has and the effort of all concerned.

He was however critical of those who continue to try to divide and disrupt the progress being made based on what they want from the sport.

At the moment it is anybody’s guess whether Pfister will return to Trinidad and Tobago as it is uncertain if, as the Express describes it: “The loan spell for Trinidadian Jamal Shabazz as Guyana head coach has ended”.

That report also stated “Whether he returns to the Golden Jaguars when they continue the 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign next year is also to be determined by the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (TTFF) in due course,” attributing remarks by Lennox Watson, the acting president of the TTFF in his inaugural address.

Watson was speaking at a breakfast meeting at Jaffa Restaurant, Queen's Park Oval, Port of Spain as he replaces Oliver Camps who recently resigned. He will perform duties as president until the TTFF calls a special congress in a few months' time to appoint a permanent successor to Camps.
The report made by Watson said, "Our senior technical staff and Mr (Otto) Pfister's contract comes to an end in December. These contracts will be reviewed and a team put in place which allows us to move forward. Coach Pfister, meantime, proceeds on his leave."

The Express report noted Watson saying “the TTFF had also received many calls concerning the standing of former Trinidad and Tobago Women’s Coach Shabazz, who coached Guyana as they qualified for the CONCACAF third round of World Cup qualifying at the expense of Trinidad and Tobago, whom they beat 2-1 at the Providence National Stadium in Guyana last Friday, rendering the Soca Warriors 2-0 victory in the return match meaningless.”

Watson weighed in by adding, "Mr. Shabazz is an employee of the TTFF in the capacity of Assistant Director of Women's football. The Guyana Football Federation (GFF) approached the TTFF Mr Shabazz to serve on a loan as Guyana’s National Coach. The TTFF released Mr Shabazz and today we congratulate him on a good job done.”

If you must know, Jagdeo the president is in a big public dispute with the owner of the Pegasus hotel. The owner of the Pegasus is a member of a rival opposition party and has been exposing govt corruption including saying that somebody got paid to bring the Marriot. The govt had financed the building of another hotel (by a man alleged by the opposition to be involved in drug trafficking) for the cricket world cup. That hotel is the Princess hotel near the stadium but they have let the standards slip and that hotel was intended to rival the Pegasus but now is in terrible condition. Elections in Guyana are due on November 28. Pegasus is way up to world standards. Don't expect the president and govt to say anything different about the Pegasus hotel. Its politics and poli-tricks.

let me mention also ..the Guyanese fans... ah feel shame... shame...DAT is fans... we get pelt twice...and nuff cuss ( trini scun%s)... real football atmosphere...

This means that you sat in/near to an stand with some action,...never saw pelting b4 so sorry to hear about that but passion and excitement was high on the day and alcohol is cheap in GT so maybe  they got a bit carried away b/c we don't do sports violence in GT....good to hear it was a 'real' football atmosphere.
For all we hear about Trinis loving to party and play football, I'm sure it would be easy to get that kind of atmosphere every time Trinidad plays at home.

Players need to see great passion from their fans as much as fans need to see great passion from their players.

The choice of team hotel, lack of cones, balls etc is really really strange and surprising for such an important match for a country so much more experienced at playing at this level...I dont know what to say brother, (maybe a bit of complacency set in with the players and coaches but,) I'm sure the TTFF could afford much better.

Wow. I really wasn't going to say anything but are you so bitter in defeat that you would rather support CRC, Mex and El Sal over a Guyanese team with a Trini head coach? If Guyana goes on to the world cup you would take no pride in knowing that it was a Trini coach that helped to get them there? that Trinidad would still be represented at the world cup? Okay maybe you hate Shabazz for doing it but he was sent there by your TTFF to help Guyana and they never recalled him, the man is doing a good job.

About the referee - Do you know that Suriname and Barbados are very bitter football rivals of Guyana and in fact many Guyanese were very worried that a Surinamese was the wrong choice for referee and that he would favour Trinidad?

About the coaching staff -Are you not concerned that maybe if your coaching team had really done some homework they would have gotten Jorsling who has the best record on that pitch against Guyana's national team and club teams and who many Guyanese defenders truly fear and respect? he can post up but he also has speed. or that they could have started the more athletic and in-form Mitchell instead of Power who headed the ball directly to centre for Shakes to score? that they could have prepared and designated a free kick taker other than Daniel?

And the players, (their own comments about lack of passion and pace and not getting to second balls aside) how many corners did they have and failed to convert? How many free-kicks did they have and failed to convert?and the complaining about the middle of the pitch - both teams played on the same pitch and both teams had players falling and finding it difficult to control the ball in the middle, it is the best we have. Other than the middle, the pitch was smooth. Same for both teams.

And our stadium - it is a cricket stadium brother, but its all we have, our GFF are so not well off (and the politicians so pro-cricket and corrupt) that we cannot afford to build a single football stadium. Our national football team does not even have a single designated 'training' ground. They have to beg clubs to train at their grounds and if it rains too bad, no ground to even train on.

And our fans, - each paid their G$1000 (TT$33) to come out and support their team - they do it all the time regardless of the opposition. I read a lot of complaints about the TT fans not supporting, maybe they are lacking some passion too but I would not blame and criticise our stadium and in it fans who act like fans. They have pride but they are not evil.

I understand that you are angry brother but no need to be so bitter and personal about it. If Trinidad had won, you could have been guaranteed of Guyana's 100% support. Guyanese will always support Trinidad but at least someone/people on the TT side must accept responsibility for what happened on Friday. It wasn't the best I have seen Guyana play but Trinidad played much worse than I thought. Maybe, and its likely Shabazz will be playing all the younger players on Tuesday so maybe you will get your 12-0 scoreline. Fair play to you.

Respect and blessings!

Hard luck Trinidad.

Heartbreaking stuff, right down to the wire, but somebody had to lose. Your goalkeeper was excellent tonight.

Guyanese will celebrate advancing tonight but will probably be sorry that it was at the expense of Trinidad to whom we owe so much in terms of development of our own football. At least you have the infrastructure, human and financial resources to come back much stronger and no doubt, you will.

Good for Guyana to see that Jorsling the TT player with the most success in Guyana, who has played the most matches on that Providence ground for club (as a guest player) and country, - is not in the TT team.
I know you have other better players but he has scored a few times on that ground but couldn't make the team.

Greetings to all on this wonderful day!

I understand the sentiments but if I remember correctly, the Guyana Football Federation requested some coaching assistance from Trinidad and your TTFF sent Jamal Shabazz to help out for as long as necessary. They could have sent anyone else but for whatever reason, they sent Shabazz. Thank God they did. I must say that even though things were very bad for the GT team in the early days (no money for stipend, good food and other hardships) he took his job very seriously professionally and its paying off. Everyone in GT embraced him. Everyone treats him like family and gave him time and space to work. No one expected the team to mature so far so fast. Now everybody wants to come back home to play for Guyana because we still struggling but we have a good team and a great coach.

Your TTFF has not recalled him so you should not blame him for doing something that he sent to Guyana to do.

Jamaicans never ever feel the need to "suck up" to any caribbean team when it comes to sports.

I feel like you're insulting me there brother. No need to. Respect is respect and (even though Jamaicans and Bajans may not have earned respect from Guyanese), the Trinidadians have earned our respect. Their players always compete (even when it seems like their administrators let them down) and we respect the contribution they have made to helping us develop our game, giving us a coach our players a league. More of our homegrown players play in Trinidad than anywhere else in the world. I'm sure more Jamaicans play/have played in Trinidad than Trinidadians have played in Jamaica.

As Capleton said "who do you think you are, we living in a small world..."

TT v GT is good for the game. We will war today and tomorrow, if Guyana wins, the country will celebrate like crazy but if Trinidad wins Guyanese will  accept it and say they were beaten by a superior team. No ego involved. We have nothing to lose.

Good. Regardless of the outcome of the match you will definitely enjoy it.

If you could get a wrist band to go into VIP stand do it, usually good view, free food and drinks. Otherwise, if you want the real thing like I usually do probably the best seating is on the right side of the red stand or left side/centre of the green stand. From there you will get easy access to food and drinks and the very best 'ol talk happens right there. Lots of food and drinks under those two stands.   Avoid the very top of the red stand unless you also want to get a natural 'high' the air up there has its own special qualities because thats where all the dreads hang out, untouched by the 'po po'. Avoid the pink stand unless they have something special going on there.

Don't sit too low down in any of the stands or the sponsor flags will block the view. Everyone is usually nice and helpful. No fuss no fighting.

No sweat I can take the criticism, like someone said above its a war but naturally I have to big up my team like you would do yours. Fair play to both of us. Trinidad has done a lot for Guyana's football so we could 'gun talk' now but will still be friends after the games.

If that funny bit is all you can find useful to quote from what I said then fair play to you but I was making the point that the goalkeeper was excellent shotstopper and good with his feet (used to be a forward) and was trying to give descriptions (from int players that would be familiar to everyone) about the style of play of the young mid-field players that TT would never have seen before. They may not play at all but at least you know about them now. We like our funny nicknames in GT.

The rest of it ...well we just have to wait and see and then talk about after the match.

Blessings!

Didn't tune in earlier because I am travelling at the moment. I also don't want to say much now but having seen the last few matches played in Guyana, my only advice to forumites is to forget the past, to say that this is not the same Guyana team that you are accustomed to seeing Trinidad beat time and again. This team has a different swagger about them and the ability to match. Jackie Chan may not start (he did not start him the last match I say at home) but he will definitely have a role to play to open up Trinidad's defence if things are not going well. Its not so much about the players though, its also about the coaching - Jamal shoud be given a national award for what he has been doing. His match coaching is spot on brilliant. His substitute selections from the bench all make an impact every single game which is very very rare at this level so players are happy to come off the bench. His tactics and the way he gets them to play at a certain level and for each other is something that we have not witnessed before his arrival. Most Guyanese footballers cannot believe that he is not the TT national coach. He makes this team play out of their skin. Every player tries to make a big impact and its working. We are doing much better in attack than before. I am talking about players actually playing far better for the national team (even out of position) than they play for their club.

About the match. Well, man for man the TT players may be better and more experienced but I think the movement, pace and rhythmn of the Guyanese players will create some problems for Trinidad because they will not be accustomed to that kind of intensity from Guyana for 90+ minutes. That is what they have been doing best recently - playing their game for 90+ minutes.

I also think that Jamal will out-coach your coach not only because he is motivated to but because he now has the weapons to do so now. Most of the weapons will be 'secret-weapons' to a TT team. He now has lots of pacy players and a team that can counter-attack with real deadly pace and midfielders who can really join the attack score. We have a few players that Trinidad has certainly never seen - a small-sized player in the midfield he can use (not as good as your Latapy but at least its the best closest thing for us) whose name is "Zorro" though he is not the best player. He also has a good strong young 20 yr old defensive midfielder who can genuinely keep the ball and sit in front of the back four if he needs him to. This guy also has excellent distribution like 'Viera' and is just like a bigger version of 'Makalele' ( you know what I mean, our version).  He also has two of the best local based strikers yet to join the team and if they make themselves available he will have many more weapons up front. Most of all I am confident that we have the best goalkeeper we can find at the moment who is excellent in goal and also very good with his feet (this is a goalkeeper who won the most recent half-time at a recent 'juggling'/keep-up competition by juggling more than 1000 and had to be stopped because he was already the clear winner).

I don't expect a 0-0 draw because I think both teams are not very very strong at the back and can do better defensively. Trinidad has good players and the Guyanese players know that but overall I am confident that whatever Trinidad scores, this Guyana team can out-score them. I hope that they will do that on the day.

My advice is that you should go to Guyana for the game. Guyanese are very hospitable to Trinidadians.
There is a lot of accommodation in Guyana (remember we hosted the cricket world cup) -  for a start just go to these sites:

hotels - http://guyana-tourism.com/blog/?page_id=30
guest houses - http://guyana-tourism.com/blog/?page_id=62
resorts - http://guyana-tourism.com/blog/?page_id=35

For those accustomed to travelling, you will also realise that food in Guyana is widely available and ridiculously cheap.

I hope that we have a good ref who lets the game flow. Don't blink. I will speak more after the game.

Respect and blessings!

Apology accepted Reggae-Fan but Guyana being the only English speaking country in South America is a non-issue. It may even be a plus. Many Brazillians (regular men and some nice women but not good footballers) come to Guyana to live and learn English. They like being here to hang out with very hospitable Guyanese and speak English.

Also more than half of a million Argentines (about the whole population of Guyana) speak only German (not Spanish). That language has not hindered their integration in Argentina and playing football, the national sport.

I still think that the issue is a good debate because Guyana is deepening links with Brazil with a bridge etc.

Personally I like the idea of Guyana playing in Conmebol because it will influence and improve our style of play and bring more people into the game regardless of the fact that we will not do well for a while, but I think overall (the initial economics of it and regional integration issues) the powers that be will prefer to stick with Concacaf.

BTW - the day is coming soon when Guyana's level of football will be above Jamaica's level. When I say that I'm not having a 'Davy Jenny moment', that is a real possibility. If you recall the way that unrated countries like Denmark and Greece have won the European Championship you would realize that every 'dog' could have their day.

Reggae-Fan your comments are just downright myopic and disrespectful. Just because a country is not a world-beater in a particular sport does not mean that they have no culture playing that sport. Football is by far the most widely and frequently played  competitive sport in Guyana but the Govt makes no effort to assist with the game at the grassroots level (unlike the millions poured into cricket and golf) and the local football association is a complete mess (like the TTFF). Guyana excels at indoor games like squash and boxing and has had world champions  but football is still king.

Football is played indoors and outdoors at many grounds. Big games are played at the same national stadium that hosted the world cup cricket.

Guyanese adore South American football and perhaps the whole country would come out to see Guyana v Brazil. In fact there are more Brazillians living in Guyana than you can imagine.

The whole issue is a good debate for Guyana (not T&T) but I think they will find it better to stick with Concacaf.

Not sure about the club scene but he played and scored a classy individual goal in a big K&S final on Jan 1st in Guyana (capped a defender, turned and hit a left footed shot into the roof of the net). The match was live online. Skills, touches, speed everything still intact.

Guyana's 'Football Godfather'..... and an excellent one too!
Truthful and sincere words of wisdom to the next generation. These days when its all about a big fight-down, we don't hear enough encouragement like that.

Reggae-Fan: Guyanese baller, who is Jackie Chan? Is he the guy who played for Joe Public a couple seasons ago and was ripping up some MLS teams? Good youth that. but lets not start singling out players, Jamaica have some decent players that will play in the gold cup. For instance, our likely starting forward line in the Digicel Cup have each scored 14 goals respectively this season for their MLS and Danish league clubs. Our #1 and #2 goal-keeprsv(both avaialable for the Digicel cup) have just been voted "goal-keeper of the year" in their respective leagues - MLS and Swedish second division respectively.

You missed the point there RF. I wasn't comparing players. Jackie Chan and few other good players did not play in this Trinidad round so if you studied that tape and look only at that team as our best you would be wrong. I am hoping that he plays the next round because he is a gifted-player who has an X-factor and plays very well away from home.
