Jones set for Stoke medical

Sunderland have confirmed striker Kenwyne Jones is to undergo a medical at Stoke on Wednesday afternoon.

Jones, 25, has been linked with a number of clubs in recent times, but he now looks set to move to the Britannia Stadium after the clubs agreed a fee reported to be in the region of £9 million.

A statement on the official Sunderland website read: "The Trinidad and Tobago international travelled to the Potteries this morning (Wednesday) for talks with Stoke boss Tony Pulis. He is undergoing a medical this afternoon."

The Stoke website added that Jones had travelled "for discussions with manager Tony Pulis and chief executive Tony Scholes with a view to completing a move from the Stadium of Light in a club record transfer".

Danny Higginbotham, who played alongside Jones at Sunderland, believes the striker would be a major asset.

"Kenwyne is a strong lad and I don't think I've ever seen anyone jump as high as Kenwyne," Higginbotham told The Sentinel. "He's very athletic and knows where the back of the net is.

"I think we signed for Sunderland on the same day - and he's certainly come on as a player since. He would be very good for us. The way we play would suit him well. He has that strength you need. I know what a handful he can be, with both his pace and his strength."

Football / Marlon King jailed for 18 months
« on: October 29, 2009, 11:01:47 AM »
From soccernet.com

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=691132&sec=england&cc=5901

Wigan striker Marlon King has been jailed for 18 months after being found guilty of groping a young woman in a nightclub and then breaking her nose when she spurned his "disgusting'' advances.

Marlon King has played only 15 minutes for Wigan this season.
King, who was celebrating both his wife's pregnancy and scoring a winning goal hours earlier, was repeatedly "cold-shouldered'' by women revellers in London's packed Soho Revue Bar last December.

When a slightly-built university student became the latest to recoil from his touch, he lost his temper and in an outburst of "completely gratuitous violence'' lashed out, "smashing'' her to the floor. His single clenched fist blow was so powerful that two other revellers - one of them holding on to his arm - were also sent flying.

While bouncers moved in to restrain the muscular £5 million striker, friends rushed to the aid of his victim. As she was helped to her feet, blood poured from her shattered nose, London's Southwark Crown Court heard.

The 29-year-old, from Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire, claimed he was a victim of "mistaken identity''.

But after hearing overwhelming evidence from a string of witnesses, including a football coach who insisted he was the assailant, the jury decided he was lying.

He was unanimously convicted of sexually assaulting the 20-year-old and causing actual bodily harm.

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan has confirmed that the club will give King notice that his contract at the club will be cancelled following Thursday's news.

I agree. Don't get me wrong, I want to see Kenwyne do well. And I am also thrilled at his performance. But, the penalty kickers are decided by the coaching staff. If you want to become a penalty kicker, you do so on the practice field and impress the coaches there.
Nonetheless he scored, and the result? More confidence and his second goal was a testament of this.

Football / Re: Thread for NY Red Bulls v W Connection (5-Aug-2009)
« on: August 06, 2009, 05:30:32 AM »
I was at the game. And i must echo some of the sentiments already mentioned on this thread. Our players in general need strength and conditioning training. There were a couple of players, No 33 for Connection who had some size and was putting his body in, but he could bulk up some more.
What we did do, and was was refreshing, was that our players commited to closing down on the NY players when we were on defense. That is something that made the difference. Cuz yes we had some chances, but we made them turn over the ball wuite a few times by sticking a foot in.
Overall, not a terrible game, but it was very refreshing to see the commitment on the pitch.

You have to give jack his jacket and Angus represented us well. He may not have been to best player we ever produced, but is definitely a shining example of what professionalism is. Good luck mentoring those "stars of tomorrow" at your Academy.

Keane did a lot for the team, the mistake he made was not signing a bruiser...and it shows on the pitch. He needed to find a young player like himself. Sunderland have no bite in d middle, someone to back up richardson.

That is what d MLS does be doing...shaftin dem players and dem dread. Imagine a man top scoring for his team and making less than 35,000. he coulda well put on a suit and go and find a job somewhere and forget them. Atleast he woulda be able to feed his family. Scott, run yes dread, doh let them shite on u again.

14
It is not even about playing for pride. Eyes watching when you playing out there, despite that fact that the game was "meaningless" you still playing for a contract and as such you put out the best effort you can. That effort last night clearly shows that these guys content with the level of football that they playing. That is too bad.

To be honest. Both Avery and Cyd, need to go up Toco with Anthony Rogier, for a month. Swing cutlass for 12 hours aday, then go and train after. So they can get the blade throwing out of their system. I never see two men, who can lock down any winger when dey ready, tackle so rash dread. Them men hadda learn to temper their tackles with the right mix of aggression. Forcing a man out wide can be just as effective. Also, is that offside trap we playing, forcing men to take luncging tackles for d team. We need to reconsider that option, cuz in the "HEX" Mexico and Costa Rica have some fleet footed wingers.

I honestly dont blame the players, i supporting them 100%. It is a serious mismanagement of resources. Imagine we down 2-0 and eh make no adjustments? we didnt put on any attackers, we didnt shore up the defence? There is a fundamental flaw in this coach's approach.

Theobald is sh*t. I keep saying it and my friends and dem keep beating me down. He does fade away when u need him to step up. Cyd gray is a MAn dread. I like him he play pretty good. Where was the thin foot terror Dennis lawrance? He is our most experienced leader in defence and you fly him all d way from england to 1. train in a hotel ball room and 2. sit on d bench all game? If guatemala beat cuba we will be in 3rd place. time to get our act together and get the main players back.

A game is like a show. We come to watch, observe and to be entertained. If the tempo is lame we will just sit there and take it in. And I admit, at times its like that, but once the tempo pick up the crowd can't help but get into it. Now from going to National games, I haven't seen our fans try to lift the team. A few attempts maybe, but I never really see us urge the team on adn help build them up. We can definitely be better at that.

« on: September 03, 2008, 06:05:17 AM »
Going back to the commentators. All those american commentators are crap except for the couple that do champions league on espn and the few from FSC and Gol tv. Those former UMNT players turned analysts are really hurting the sport, with their lackluster broadcasting skills and clearly biased stance. Especially during the world cup. It is really hurting the image of football in America atleast for those who are already fans.

Jamal Gay's goal vs New England Revs.

Note: Check the size of Derek King. They will show him jumping up after Gay scores you will see him celebrating from the bench. FYI - He's the assistant coach for JP.

wha de arse going on with derek??

This man is my age and he done let heself go arready.... wha trouble is this

I remember watching this man play for Arima Compre and for W connection. Wasn't he supposed to be a revalation in defence for the senior team right now? Was there an injury or something?

I think it is the number of subs that were made. I not sure, but i heard a commentator speaking about it a couple weeks ago during the last set of friendlies. There is a limit of subs u can make for it to be recognized officially by FIFA.
