Just shy of 300 miles from London to Sunderland, around 275-280 i think.

Good to hear that you are planning another trip up.

Neverthless thats beside the point.

You say a friendly at this time of the year is 'crazy' given Sunderland's circumstances, but yet I'm sure if there was an England international friendly on the same date and one of Sunderland's players was selected you'd probably be over the moon. And I'll also venture a guess that you'd see a whole lot more substance in the merit of that friendly in the grand picture of Capello's plans..

Fact of the matter is that when Keane signed the players, he knew exactly where they would have to go on international fixture dates and what challenges would be involved. I am of the opinion (as selfish as it may be) that we need to get our already retarded preparations into full gear, and the Jamaica friendly is a key part of this. Also, with a new coach and philosophy on board, its important to get Carlos on-board even if he doesn't feature in the actual game itself..

Like I said, I understand where you're coming from as a Sunderland fan but I hope you also understand where I'm coming from as a T&T fan...

I can understand where you're coming from but look at the bigger picture, Carlos is in the middle of his rehab program coming back from a serious injury, flying him 10'000 miles around the world and him missing up to a week of that rehab will put him back even further meaning he gets even less competitive minutes which will effect not only the remainder of our season but your internationals as well because the games will simply run out for him to get him fully back up to speed.

We have 10 games to go (9 after today) and you're talking at least 4 or 5 games for him to really start to regain his match fitness and sharpness, by the time he is ready to be back starting there may be only 5 or 6 games left.

Is the risk worth it? Not in my opinion

Look's like keane told kenwyn to cool it with the flipping, hence the reason why no flips i guess.

Kenwyne had hardly trained all week because of a slight niggling injury, that's why he was told not to risk the flips in case it aggravated it

Congrats to K. Jones!   I hope that the Sunderland fans are not expecting a miracle worker, and they give the young man a chance before saying this and that.    What is a realistic target for Jones this season?  I think that if he scores more than 7 goals then one can say that he had a successful season.

You can't be serious....They spent 6mil for him.

Minimum 12 but hoping for 15-20.

I'd like to see 10 - 12 from him minimum if he stays fit all season, but i'm more concerned about KJ and Chopra gelling and working well together, if they can learn to play well together quickly I think we will give alot of teams alot of problems

Kenwyne signs for SAFC.
By: Nick Alexander (Sunderland).

Roy Keane completed a trio of signings today by paying Southampton £6m for Kenwyne Jones. Jones, a striker, is the 12th player to join Keane's squad this summer and follows Ian Harte and Danny Higginbotham through the Stadium of Light door today.
Keane said: "I'm delighted that Kenwyne is a Sunderland player. He was very keen to join the club which is always a good thing.
"He's a big, strong boy who is quick and athletic too. He has a real physical presence and is the type of player we've been missing."
Trinidad and Tobago player Jones' move to Sunderland sees Stern John, his international team-mate, go the other way.
Jones has signed a four-year contract at the Stadium of Light, becoming the club's third most expensive signing after Craig Gordon and Tore Andre Flo.
The frontman, who moved to England in 2004, netted 14 league goals from 25 starts for the Saints last season.
Jones has had loan spells with Sheffield Wednesday and Stoke during his time at Southampton, playing for the Potters at the Stadium of Light in May 2005 as Sunderland celebrated promotion.

What happened to Clarke made me think.
By: Paul Gilder (The Journal).

Kenwyne Jones became Sunderland’s third most expensive player when he completed his £6m move from Southampton this week, but his sizeable transfer fee does not concern a striker with more important things to think about.

The misfortune Clive Clarke has encountered this week has touched all in English football, Sunderland’s on-loan Irishman having suffered double heart failure during the half-time break in Leicester’s Carling Cup second-round tie at Nottingham Forest.
A shocking episode that has affected different people in different ways. For supporters in the East Midlands, Clarke’s collapse ensured that fighting for local pride paled into insignificance, while for Roy Keane it put another pitiful performance into perspective.
For Kenwyne Jones, the defender’s plight demonstrated that in football, as in life, opportunities must be taken. As the 22-year-old admitted last night, Clarke’s horrendous health problems have suggested that he was correct to pursue a controversial career path.
“What happened to Clive made me sit up and think,” said the Black Cats’ latest signing, who told Southampton officials that he did not want to be considered for last week’s Championship fixture against Stoke having been told he would not be allowed to leave the South Coast club.
“As a sportsman, a footballer, you assume that you will be healthy for a long time. But then things like this happen and it makes you think. It made me realise that I’ve got to take every chance I get. It’s everybody’s dream to play in the Premier League and when you see players having to retire and players dying (Sevilla’s Antonio Puerta this week met such an end after suffering a cardiac arrest during a game against Gefate), you realise that you have to take your opportunities when they come. The time came for me and I had to take the chance.”
Keane – who learned about Clarke’s troubles during this week’s Carling Cup defeat at Luton – could not disguise his distress when informed. The Black Cats boss was last night attempting to speak to the recovering defender, while chairman Niall Quinn is planning to visit him in hospital this morning.
Although their Sunderland careers have not overlapped, Jones has given Clarke’s condition much thought in recent days and, like all in the footballing world, what has happened to Puerta has prompted profound thought.
Seven days ago, a player who had handed in a transfer request at St Mary’s was making unfortunate headlines having effectively gone on strike. One week on, perspective has been discovered.
“What happened at Southampton was taken out of context,” explained the Trinidad and Tobago international, who forced George Burley’s hand with his refusal to take part against Stoke last weekend. “It’s gone now and I’m just pleased to be here at Sunderland. It was a bit of a saga, it dragged on for a week or two, but what’s done is done.
“I left Southampton on good terms. I have no ill feelings towards anyone there, I’ve been there for three years and everyone down there’s a friend. Everyone down there – regardless of the circumstances – is pleased for me. I think people are pleased that I’ve made a step towards the pinnacles of my career.”
Jones is perhaps naive to think that all at St Mary’s are pleased with the manner in which he departed the Championship club, although satisfaction should be sought in the deal that ensured a protracted transfer progressed. To sign a striker with a mere two Premier League appearances to his name, Keane spent £6m, with Stern John joining Southampton as part of the deal. The Saints paid the Trinidad club W Connection just £100,000 to sign Jones three years ago.
Other than Craig Gordon and Tore Andre Flo, no player has cost the Black Cats more, but although a staggering transfer fee will bring understandable pressures, Jones has no concerns.
“The price tag doesn’t bother me,” said a striker who is expected to make his debut in tomorrow’s televised fixture at Manchester United. “No matter what league you’re playing in, you’re going to be under some pressure, but I won’t be worrying about the transfer fee. I’ll just be doing the best I can.
“Players have no input in what their price tag might be, it’s no one’s fault. Southampton wanted to get a good price and, to be fair, they’ve been in the Championship for two years and don’t have much cash. It’s not a concern for me. I’m just pleased it has been done.”
Keane has been as outspoken as ever this summer and earlier this month the Irishman criticised players for refusing to head north and for being obsessed with living near London. Having bucked the trend, a player prepared to uproot had no qualms about making such a big move.
“It wasn’t an issue,” said Jones, who has joined compatriots Dwight Yorke and Carlos Edwards on Wearside. “I moved 4,000 miles from Trinidad and Tobago to join Southampton so moving here wasn’t a problem at all. I just want to be playing in the Premier League.
“It was a simple decision to make and it always helps when you’ve got friends at a club. Dwight and Carlos being at Sunderland wasn’t a major factor for me, but it was a factor.
“I was speaking to them two or three times a week even before all this started to happen and they were always joking and saying, ‘When are you coming up here?’ Them being here is the icing on the cake for me.
“Regardless of what they’ve told me, everyone in England can see that Sunderland Football Club has great ambition. What happened last year showed that. People know what Sunderland is about. You don’t need words to persuade you to come here.”
“I’ve never set goal targets, I set performance targets. The aim is to be better each day, whether that’s in training or in games. I hope those performances will help me to score goals in the games.
“Everyone’s different and when you come to the Premier League you just have to find your own way and play how you play. I hope the way I play will enable me to be a success.”
The price-tag does not bother me . . . I’ll do the best I can.

Heh cartman or JP, what's up wid stern, is he a gonnah or does he stand a chance to last out till the jan transfer. i read a lot of negs about him on the SMB and it seems like he is not liked by the fans in the least dispite scoring 3 goals this season including pre season. have you seen him play this season and could you rate his performances, does R keane think he's an asset or a liability in the prem. how probable does the KJ rumours seem from your prospective. i am brimming with anticipation since the derby rumours, i'd like to see this kid in the prem, not sure how he'd do but still curious to see him tested on that level.          positive.

Honestly.....

I think Stern would become nothing more than a bit part player for us (chuck him on for the last 10 minutes type of player) where as Kenwyne Jones could become a long term starter for us, We desperately need a target man IMO who can hold the ball up, battle with defenders and release the smaller man (chopra) and sadly i don't think Stern could fill that mould on a regular permanent basis in the Premiership (just my opinion)

Kenwyne Jones on the other hand I think could be a very worthy addition to our squad as i've said in another post on here, he might not be the finished article yet but he's a big lad with a lot of pace and with the right guidance I feel he could become a good player playing along side someone like Chopra

Boy, I have learnt to pay no attention to the "fans" on that forum. They seem to come on more to argue than to support. Nothing and no one is good enough. About 90% of them whinge for no reason other than to have something to say. Doh take it personal.

I look to what the manager says and the decisions he makes. Cause clearly if was up to some ah dem fans, Sunderland would be in League 1 this season instead of the EPL.

Some of them lot wouldn't be happy if we signed RVN and won the Premier league this season  ;D

I think most of the time they only do it to be controversial

I think Kenwyne Jones would be a very good signing for us because of his obvious links with Stern, Yorkie and Carlos, Keano is building a TEAM not a squad of individuals and I think signing Kenwyne has a lot of advantages to it, mostly because he would settle into the squad very quickly because he has three familiar faces already there helping him, the downside is, I think Sterns opportunities would become limited within the team, but I'd be happy to have him playing for Sunderland

On another note; it was nice to see the group of TnT fans in the Sunderland end at the Birmingham game, they were sat about 10 - 15 rows in front of me and they went mental when Stern came on  ;D, I didn't see them when he scored because i was too busy going mental myself   8)

Good signs

Carlos primed for comeback
Apr 6 2007

By James Hunter, The Evening Chronicle

Carlos Edwards cannot wait to rejoin Sunderland's promotion campaign - and he could even make his comeback against Wolves tomorrow.

The Trinidad and Tobago winger has been out of action for a month with a shoulder injury picked up in Sunderland's win at West Brom at the beginning of March.

Edwards said this week he feels ready to return, although if there is any doubt boss Roy Keane will err on the side of caution and give him any extra time he may need.

Edwards said: "It has been four or five weeks since I got the injury and I am looking forward to returning.

"It has been really frustrating to be out of action for so long at such a crucial stage of the season.

"I hate watching football when I cannot get involved.

"I have been training for the last week and, assuming there are no more problems, I should be available for selection tomorrow.

"I worked really hard with the physio Pete Friar because I wanted to be back before the end of the season.

"The manager will have been watching my progress this week and hopefully he will have seen enough to convince him I am ready."

Edwards has been back in full-contact training this week and that has given him the chance to see how his left shoulder will stand up to the rigours of a match.

He said: "It was a ligament problem rather than bone trouble. Initially, the medical team said I would be out for six to eight week, but I have made a good recovery.

"The ligaments take time to heal, though, so it has still taken more than a month.

"I started in full training with the rest of the lads a week ago and I can withstand the contact that comes with that.

"I'm pleased I have had the chance to see how it responds to contact because if I play tomorrow then I know the Wolves players will not be taking it easy on me."

Sunderland are just a point outside the automatic promotion places, and three behind leaders Derby.

While Edwards has been out of commission, they have extended their unbeaten run to 14 league games.

Tomorrow they face a stiff test when former Black Cats boss Mick McCarthy, who is now in charge of Wolves, returns to the Stadium of Light for the first time since his sacking 13 months ago.

Wolves, who are seven points behind Sunderland in sixth place and battling it out for a play-off spot, will be keen to bounce straight back after losing 6-0 at home to Southampton last Saturday.

Edwards said: "Fortunately, the team has done very well while I have been out and we are right on the heels of Birmingham and Derby.

"There are still six games to go but hopefully, if we can keep up the form we have shown since Christmas, then we will be in with a great chance of making it into the Premiership.

"However, it will be a tough game tomorrow because Wolves also have their sights on promotion and will want to win after losing heavily last weekend."

Get yer sen down man, It's an excuse to meet people off this board, have abit craic on with the Sunderland Fans, watch some live English Football and have a good day out!

It's gotta be better than sitting at home, look at it as a mini holiday rather than than going just to see Yorkie, Carlos and Stern play! I know that was the original purpose of the trip but make the most of it rather than look at the negatives  :)

Football / Re: Crowd against Wolves

We currently have the 11th highest average in England.

Man Utd - 75,828
Arsenal - 60,043
Newcastle - 50,466
Liverpool - 43,692
Chelsea - 41,519
Manchester City - 38,973
Everton - 36,607
Aston Villa - 36,366
Tottenham Hotspur - 35,725
West Ham United - 34,709
Sunderland - 30,450

Not bad at all considering some of the away support we have had this season visiting the SOL has been poor, notably Stoke and Crystal Palace

We've also had the 8th highest crowd of the season in England which was the Boxing Day game against Leeds of 40,116 (would have been more had Leeds not had there allocation reduced to 1500)

« on: March 17, 2007, 11:50:28 AM »
It's a good point to raise,

We currently have a good squad of players although we would need to buy to be able to survive or compete in the EPL, all teams in the Championship are in the same boat, not one of them has a squad that they wouldn't need to add to, our biggest advantage over the others is that we have a Manager who has something that very few Managers ever have in their careers, the ability to install a Winning mentality in to his team and keep them fighting until the end, it depends on how Roy Keane spends the money he will be given next year, whether in the championship or the EPL.

There's still seven games to go and promotion is far from guaranteed but we have put ourselves in with a very good chance and should we get promoted I think we've a better chance of being more successful next season than any of the other clubs currently fighting for promotion

sorry, just read my post back and it implies in a round about way your a Newcastle fan, I didn't mean it to sound like that!
just another thing for me to have a dig at Newcastle for, the fact they had a young talented player from Man Utd and barely played him even when they had injurys

Yeh i agree to bring racism into tht was bad. but ah a hope arsenal sign d fellah, maybe as u say arsenal will loan him to sunderland, then we have a 3rd trini in sunderland :D
I hope he has the skill to become a great player if Arsenal sign him, like I said on page 1 they have a history of signing young promising players and then they barely get a game for them, I think the lad would be better off finding a club where he will become a first team regular then in 2 or 3 years if he's that good then the big clubs will come knocking, I suspect at the moment he's showing the early signs of becoming a good player but not quite top class yet otherwise there would be a number of premiership clubs looking at him and Cardiff wouldn't get a mention. I genuinely hope the lad becomes a great player because the legacy that Dwight, Stern and Carlos will hopefully leave at Sunderland will mean that in the years ahead the top players from T'n'T will be looking at the EPL as the league to be in with Sunderland as the club they want to play for rather than the Arsenals, Man Utd, Liverpool & Chelseas and like you say maybe or should I say hopefully, Arsenal will see what it did for Justin Hoyte by coming to Sunderland and give us a few of the up and coming stars (We'd have that Fabregas fella for a couple of seasons)   :praying:  :D ;D
