This has been going on for years in Central America, actually it was worst in the 80's. Everytime you go to take a corner bags of piss being thrown at yuh. One corner in particular they call Vietnam, is only missiles flying through the air. CONCACAF and FIFA have never done a dam thing about it. One match a linesman make a call & a bottle of J&B fly inches from he head, he just pick it up and throw it off. So it was and so it shall be.

You are right and only in CONCACAF is this BS allowed.

Any updates would be appreciated.  Regardless of the final, congrats to Grenada for getting this far.

I know Grenada has a few English based players capped, but are any professional players on their current roster  ?

TFC fans are elated with the trade.  James was a solid young defender, but Derosario is Canadian and one of the MVP's of MLS.  He is a game breaker and Toronto is his home town.  Great deal for TFC, Toronto and all Canadian fans.

TFC will make the play-offs this year and the hottest field in MLS, BMO Field, will be rocking.

I guess he is to old to try Europe

Not too old yet, but there is little to gain for him at this point.  He is making big bucks in MLS ($350,000) and playing at home.  That is tough to beat.  It also means less travel for internationals.

CATHAL KELLY

After three years of one-sided romance, the management of Toronto FC has finally shown the team's supporters some real love. The addition of Dwayne De Rosario – local boy, outsized talent – is the transaction equivalent of a big, sloppy kiss.

The native of Scarborough was welcomed home yesterday afternoon, gift-wrapped from Houston. He was swapped for defender Julius James and allocation money, which FC has spent the last two seasons stockpiling like Scrooge.

In most exchanges of talent, there is a period of sober observation that should follow before either side is declared a winner. Let's chuck that out the window and declare this, hands down, the best transaction for a Toronto franchise since Leeman et al for Gilmour and friends, or Carter and Alomar for McGriff and Fernandez. Not that Houston must lose here, but Toronto has already won in every sense.

This is the sort of transaction that can transform a franchise, and a fan base along with it. FC's GM Mo Johnston has taken a great deal of heat in this space for his sit-on-your-hands approach to sports management, but he deserves nothing but congratulations this morning for engineering the I'll-believe-it-when-I-see-it deal nobody really believed they'd ever see. Maybe all those coy, come hithers issued by De Rosario whenever he floated through town on international duty actually worked. Maybe Johnston has finally embraced the idea that a North American team requires North American talent. Whatever did it, it's injected some much needed buzz into a side that was beginning to slide out of the reckoning of sports editors and omnivorous fans across this city.

How does this switch work? Let me count the ways.

One, Toronto FC has been buried under their domestic quota for both years of its existence. On a 28-man roster that must be at least half Canadian, FC has never found more than two domestic regulars. De Rosario's inclusion – in the place of a Trinidadian to boot – eases that pressure enormously.

Two, De Rosario arrives not as a pricey designated player, but as a regularly paid schmo included under the roughly $2.3 million (all figures U.S.) league-financed salary cap. Last year, he earned $325,000, which would make him FC's highest paid player. And it's a bargain, folks.

Three, he is, in a word, really freaking good. Those who remember him streaking in from the left to pot a long-distance screamer in Canada's friendly versus Costa Rica at BMO Field a couple of summers ago will attest to that. He is probably the second best Canadian player, period, this side of Deportivo's Julian de Guzman. He's already won the MLS Cup four times. That's four more than the entire FC roster combined. With apologies to Amado Guevara, he is the first bona fide star Toronto FC has possessed.

Four, and maybe most importantly, he arrives at a key moment for this team.

While ticket sales continue briskly and stadium expansion sits on the lips of MLSE suits, nobody seemed to notice the $12-beer-buying natives getting restless.

Two years of dismal play will do that to you. But De Rosario's arrival promises a sporting rebirth and a new injection of interest from the local public. It's a huge win, easily the biggest in franchise history.

Football / Re: Joe Public v Montreal Impact Thread (08-Oct-2008).
« on: October 08, 2008, 08:16:08 PM »

Impact makes Joe Public look like regular Joes

CBC Sports

Maybe Joe Public FC head coach Keith Griffith should stick to just coaching soccer and not concern himself with making prognostications.

The Montreal Impact all but assured itself a quarter-final berth in the CONCACAF Champions League Wednesday night with an easy 4-1 win over Joe Public FC in Trinidad and Tobago.

With the win, Montreal solidified its hold on first place in its round-robin group of the 16-team competition. The Impact has 10 points, ahead of Mexican side Atlante FC (four points) and Olimpia of Honduras and Joe Public (three points apiece).

Atlante visits Olimpia later on Wednesday. A victory by the Mexican club would ensure Montreal advances to the next round as the top two clubs in each of the four first-round groups move on to the quarter-finals.

Griffith raised eyebrows after Joe Public's 2-0 loss to the Impact in Montreal last month when he boastfully predicted the Trinidadian club would handily win the return match on their home turf.

"The next time we meet the Impact [in Trinidad and Tobago], we'll beat them by four goals clear, for sure," Griffith said at the time.

But Griffith's team was overpowered, outclassed and outplayed by the Impact Wednesday in Port of Spain, and they sorely lacked offensive inspiration without influential forward Gregory Richardson, who was serving a one-game suspension.

Montreal's win was all the more impressive when you consider its hectic and taxing schedule as of late — Wednesday's game was the Canadian club's fourth in eight days.

It took the Impact all of five minutes to open the scoring, Rocco Placentino finding of the back of the net with a low shot after collecting a perfect pass from the wing from Tony Donatelli.

Donatelli curls perfect shot into net

Montreal's lead lasted only four minutes, as Kerry Noray took advantage of some slack defending by Montreal before beating Impact goalkeeper Matt Jordan with a shot from close range.

Donatelli restored Montreal's advantage in the 12th minute when he collected a high cross from Leonardo Di Lorenzo, slipped by a Joe Public defender inside the box and curled a perfect shot into the back of the net.

After that flurry of goals, the game settled down into a pedestrian rhythm before the Impact scored with two minutes remaining in the first half.

Sandro Grande made a perfect defence-splitting pass that sent Joey Gjertsen on a breakaway, and after he rounded Joe Public's goalkeeper, the Montreal midfielder played the ball into the middle of the box for Peter Byers, who scored on an easy tap-in from two yards out.

The Trinidadian side never really threatened in the second half, and Donatelli sealed the result with his second goal of the game at the 78-minute mark when he chipped his shot over the head of the onrushing Joe Public goalkeeper.

The Impact will play its last two games of the first round on Oct. 21 against Honduran club Olimpia in Montreal (CBC Bold, CBCSports.ca, 8 p.m. ET), and Oct. 28 against Atlante FC in Cancun, Mexico (CBC Bold, CBCSports.ca, 10 p.m. ET).

Still stinging from Canada's horrendous game vs Honduras.

Tomorrow the Fat Lady will sing and put us out of our misery for another four years.

Then we can fire Dale Mitchell and hire a real coach.

Just returned home from the match.

Canada had three points inn the bag, but our goalie choked.  Basically an own goal.

That said, if we play the rest of our matches how we played in the second half, we will steal points on the road.  No question we dominated Jamaica.

On a positive note, the crowd for Canada was awesome.  Jamaica used to own Toronto, but those days are long gone.

Next game is a must win vs Honduras at home in Montreal.

Media comments:

Dale Mitchell - "The squad selected has quality and a lot of experience, the two things I was looking for."

Quality is an understatement. The true testament to the current men's national team lies in who did not make the list of 18 names. Internationals like Marcel de Jong, Ante Jazic and Oliveir Occean, a player currently turning heads with Lillestrøm S.K. of the Norwegian Tippeligaen.

Personally I fear we made a mistake in not selecting Occean, the second leading scorer in Norway.  He is in mid season form, unlike Gerba has has not played a competitive match since Canada's, St Vincent match.  That said, Gerba has had great success on the international scene and has been a prolific goal scorer.

Fullback Paul Stalteri (Tottenham) will captain Canada and earn his 68th cap, third on the Canadian all-time list, against Jamaica. Mitchell's squad includes three players who were unavailable for the initial qualifying games against St. Vincent: forward Iain Hume (Barnsley), midfielder Daniel Imhof (Bochum) and defender Kevin McKenna (FC Koln).

NOTES -- Mitchell says fullbacks Ante Jazic and Marcel de Jong and forward Olivier Occean were unlucky in missing selection because of the depth at their position, with left-sided fullbacks Mike Klukowski and Jim Brennan and similar style-strikers in Rob Friend and Ali Gerba already in the squad ... The coach says he has yet to choose his starting 'keeper between Greg Sutton and Pat Onstad, who is one cap short of tying Craig Forrest for the most appearances by a Canadian goalie (56). Fellow 'keeper Lars Hirschfeld, while healthy again, was not considered because he is not No. 1 at his Romanian club. "We're going with the two guys that are playing -- and playing on a regular basis." ... The Jamaica game is expected to be a sellout in Toronto.

This is a very strong Canada squad.  As usual, Canada has not has the preparation of Jamaica, but looking at the rosters, I think Canada will have 3 points.

Yorke suffers possible fracture, could miss World Cup qualifier
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

SUNDERLAND, England - Sunderland striker Dwight Yorke may have suffered a fractured cheekbone and could miss Trinidad and Tobago's next World Cup qualifier.

Playing in a pre-season friendly in Portugal for Sunderland on Wednesday, Yorke was struck in the face by Vitoria Setubal goalkeeper Nikola Milojevic.

The English Premier League club at first thought he suffered only bruising, but a report on the club website said it could be more serious and he will have X-rays to establish the extent of the injury.

"We thought it was just a bang on the head," Sunderland manager Roy Keane said. "But there could be a fracture there, around his eye, he'll be out for a number of weeks."

Trinidad plays its first match in the third round of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying on Aug. 20 in Cuba. Other teams in the round-robin group are the United States and Guatemala. The top two will advance to the next round.

Football / Re: MLS to Add two new teams in 2011
« on: July 26, 2008, 08:38:09 PM »

One advantage both Montreal and Vancouver have, are existing teams with rich histories:

The Whitecaps have been around for roughly 35 years, and are the oldest professional club in North America.  They have a billionaire owner and now Steve Nash NBA MVP, (who has been a Whitecaps fan since he was 6 yrs old) is on board.
MLS have already approved their plans to move into a renovated BC Place.  Back in the day of Empire Stadium, the Whitecaps used to draw crowds of over 20,000.  They are former champions in the NASL, CSL and now USL First Division.   They also beat TFC at BMO Field, and tied them in Vancouver, in Voyageurs Cup action.  Not to mention beating the LA Galaxy in Edmonton in front of over 30,000.

The Montreal Impact just opened their new soccer specific stadium, Stade Saputo.  It's a beautiful 13,000 seat stadium, and the pitch is said to rival anything in the world (unlike TFC's BMO Field, which has FieldTurf). Plans are already in place to expand to 20,000 seats.  Montreal are former USL First Division champions, and seven time Voyageurs Cup winners, beating TFC at BMO Field this year to claim the Canadian championship.  Montreal in USL regularly out draws MLS clubs.  They are also owned by the Saputo family, which are worth billions and are the fifth richest Canadians.

Any new club (including Ottawa) starting from scratch can't touch any of this.

`GO BERMUDA``

For once Palos and I are in full agreement  !

Congrats to Bermuda on a terrific upset.  A classy performance from this tiny island.  I have always loved Bermuda since they gave Canada a terrific game about 15 years ago at Swangard.  T&T should still advance however, as should CR and other heavyweightes.

As I said last week, the more upsets the better for Canada.  I can say that in full confidance, as the Heat will be destroyed on June 20.

Wow, unbelievable upsets in CONCACAF  !  Bermuda, NA, Grenada......

No upsets here as St Vincent lost at home to Canada 3-0, with Gerba scoring the brace.

Canada will complete the rout on Friday, June 20 in Montreal.  I`m expecting Canada to win by 4.

Canadians down St. Vincent & Grenadines 3-0 in World Cup qualifier

By THE CANADIAN PRESS

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent - Issey Nakajima-Farran opened the scoring in the 32nd minute and Canada went on to beat St. Vincent & the Grenadines 3-0 Sunday in the first leg of a two-match qualifying series for the 2010 World Cup.

Ali Gerba, who came on for the injured Rob Friend after only seven minutes, scored a pair of goals, the first coming two minutes from the break and the second two minutes from full time.

It was only the second meeting ever between the two countries following the Canada's 2-0 victory at the Arnos Vale Playing Field in the early 1980's.

The return leg is set for next Sunday at the Saputo Stadium in Montreal.

Seemingly unaffected by the afternoon's 30 C heat, the Canadians never allowed the Vincentians to settle, taking control of the midfield with ease as Julian de Guzman, captain Paul Stalteri and Tomasz Radzinski all combined with short passes to overcome the steamy conditions.

"We knew that the heat would be a factor but our intention was to play at a comfortable pace and keep control of the ball," said Canadian head coach Dale Mitchell.

SVG, however, came close to taking the lead in the 27th minute, but Marlon James' low shot was saved by Pat Onstad's outstretched leg while on the ground.

The visitors took the lead when Mike Klukowski involved de Guzman and Dwayne De Rosario before ending with Nakajima-Farran hitting a right foot past SVG goalkeeper Melvin Andrews.

The nimble Gerba made it 2-0 in the 38th when he collected a pass from de Guzman, and with the SVG defenders appealing for offside, he struck the ball low to Andrews' left.

De Rosario once more breached the defence and quickly played the ball to Gerba who calmly slotted home the third goal in the 89th minute.

James, who was the leading scorer in the Malaysian Football League, was stifled by Canada's Adrian Serioux, allowing him little space throughout the match.

The Canadians found the net in the 60th again through Gerba, but this time it was ruled offside.

Patrice Bernier replaced De Guzman in the 72nd minute and Jim Brennan came on for Radzinski in the 85th.

De Rosario came close to scoring in the 12th but only succeeded in hitting the ball wide from the edge of the box.

There seems to be some debate over whether this was an A international.  I don't believe this was a strong squad for Norway, and if it wasn't an A international, I believe he is not cap tied to the USA.

Well, he has ties to the US and was included in this squad, somebody is ah big ass. But ah sure they did their homework already and know the fella qualify to play for Canada.

If they did not do their homework on this, they will be lynched.
