i'm noticing a trend with our younger pros that indicates that they're more inclined for north american leagues than european leagues.....is it because they're not experienced enough yet and use NA to build their resumes or is it because of the new European system making it hard for non europeans to get contracts ie work visas and such....it seems to me that Europe is tryng to protect their football/rankings by being tough on the underestablished countries around the world.....i wait to see what happens with CONCACAF now Mr. Warner has been disposed of. I see bleak times for the Carribean Pros since concacaf will now be fueled by USA & Mexico's needs....i brought up a number of issues, i may be ranting.....but being in football limbo tends to do this to a fan

Football / Otto Pfister Appointed Coach Of Trinidad & Tobago
« on: March 24, 2011, 01:37:27 PM »
Veteran German Otto Pfister has been appointed the new coach of Trinidad and Tobago.

De Telegraaf reports the 73-year-old has been tasked with leading the Soca Warriors to the World Cup in 2014.

The TTFF (Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation) had been looking at a shortlist of candidates which included Johan Neeskens and former Portugal boss Carlos Queiroz, but, it's Pfister who has landed the job after contract details were finalised with the TTFF.

He will offer a hoard of experience having coached at two World Cups with Togo in 2006, and for Saudi Arabia in France in 1998.

Ryan you don't think Europeans despise the fact that they're losing out to South American teams. I always get the sense when listening to commentators in Europe that they are in awe of the South Americans but would much rather see a European in the spot light or would over rate an ok European(BALE, OWEN) ......not to sound racist or anything of the sort but one seems to get the sense of "We Made It So We Should Have The Best" ......its the same in the administrative side.....when European bids for World Cups are rejected by FIFA it is almost blasphemous. You always get the sense that the believe they are better than anything outside Europe(which is why everyone loves brazil because they go against the "Euro Babylon System")

People are always quick to criticize our players technical ability but having played in college and seeing some of the best US players....our players are even more technical and gifted than some of the players on the US youth pool. Our problem has always been staying consistent.....one night Hayden Tinto would like like a super star and on the other night he would look like a huge flop....Kenwyn Jones suffers from the same problem ....Cornell Glenn who looks like a world beater some nights will flop the next night.....the funny thing is players in the National Pool are not shitty and terrible as ppl make them out to be.....consistency comes with discipline and discipline can also be added from a philosophy........think about outside Trinidad and Inter Milan....they had the same players the year before they won the Champions league but those same players adopted a philosophy and stuck to it and it paid off. Which is why it is important for Trinidad to adopt a philosophy or style and implement it from the grass roots up. So all the ppl who are saying we don't have the talent ...its not that....its because we don't have Discipline/a set mandate to follow

Kicker your talking about the total football of the 70s....total football has modernized and has given more impetus to ball possession and passing.....and the use of the interchanging wingers and wing backs......when Leo adopted T&T our wingers/wing backs worked together although one noticed when we came up against the top teams we held position.

Even if Brazil used other infuences to bring their own style to birth ...their mix up breed football evolved into a superior breed.....which is prolly why they are liked and disliked by so many football purists. Some clap them for being a non European power house while Europeans despise the fact that they made a game that slaves can play better.

Back on the topic though.....i used the Grouping styles just for an example of what else Trinidadians could adopt......obviously one can find differing examples from countries but most of the time those are the factors innate to their play.

And Leo did use "Total Football" manual for Trinidad, he just couldn't teach everything in a few months....I mean it is TOTAL....he just focused on what he found important to get the job done......obviously now the TTFF has realized their mistake in that they only got a few chapters of the total football book and want to get the rest.

« on: February 03, 2011, 09:24:59 AM »
Trinidad's most success has come from using the Dutch style of play(Total Football)....it seems to me that our federation has chosen this is what we want to emulate for the future, considering we are hiring Dutch coaches to teach our coaches also. Did Leo make such an impression that we have now decided that this is the future of Trinidad football. I must say Dutch coaches seem to make an impression in getting to World Cups and also featuring in many of the Top teams in Europe style of play but are Trinis able to handle the rigorous discipline that dutch football demands. Is this our best option considering the other styles of play English(long ball), Spainish(ticky tock), Brazilian & Portugese(Samba),Italian(Defensive), African(Speed & Power), South American(Skill and Flare), American(Machine Mentality), German(Technical & Power), other Euro teams(Highly Technical and Tactical). Are Trinis made for Total football or would one of these other mentalities be suited to us. Note the fact that almost all of these styles discipline is probably the factor that creates world beaters.

It might not be long before we have a pair of Sporting Kansas City players who wear this national team shirt.

Earlier in the afternoon on Saturday, Charles Gooch from The Full 90 tweeted the link to a story out of Trinidad & Tobago about a pair of players that have been invited on trials to join Sporting Kansas City later this month when they open their preseason training.

The article gives a bit more information on a pair of players that caught the eye of Sporting KC technical director/head coach Peter Vermes during last month's scouting combine in Trinidad - Sheldon Bateau and Daneil Cyrus.

Up until these names came out a few weeks ago, there had been very little made public about any potential targets for SKC this offseason. The Daily Wiz reported of the club's interest in French defender Aurelien Collin in early December, and between those times and even up until now, there has been virtually no other names to speak of. I've heard a name here and there, but nothing concrete to post about and alarm the troops.

So, less than a week before the 2011 MLS SuperDraft, it is nice to finally have a couple of names to discuss and think about. We know that next Thursday the team will have three picks in the SuperDraft, so we'll potentially have three more guys via that route. But, the only player guaranteed to be signed and make the team, really, will be the first round choice (number 10 overall). More than anything, though, Bateau and Cyrus are just something to talk about at long last.

So, now that we finally have a couple targets to discuss, let's get to it. All the information on Bateau and Cyrus to be had via the interwebs after the jump...

Sheldon Bateau

Age: 19
Height: 6'1"
Current Club: San Juan Jabloteh
International Experience: T&T U-17 World Cup ('07) - 2 games, T&T U-20 World Cup ('09) - 1 game, current captain of T&T U-20 national team
Position: Bateau is listed by multiple player database outlets as a defender, specifically a central defender by some. But, in an interview that That at The Back Post had with Vermes immediately following the comine, Vermes said "he plays in the midfield."

Random information: In this discussion forum post from December 2008, Bateau is talked about as "the total package." Obviously, this is a not a sanctioned article from a news outlet, and as it lists him as 6'3" as a 17-year old, (the 6'1" listed above comes from a current player database) that could tell you just how much credence to take from the seemingly over-zealous fan. The point is, though, that Bateau is highly thought of in an improving football nation, and has been for some time.

Though none of the games have gone the way of his side, he has played in and started three CONCACAF Champions League games - a competition in which SKC fans hope to take a part in come 2012 and beyond.

Daneil Cyrus

Age: 20
Height: 6'3-1/2"
Current Club: Caledonia AIA (on loan from FC Santa Rosa)
International Experience: T&T U-17 World Cup ('07) - 3 games, T&T U-20 World Cup ('09) - 3 games, T&T senior national team - 13 games, regular starter for senior team
Position: Cyrus is listed by most as a defender, and specifically a central defender - just like Bateau.

Random information: Cyrus goes by the nickname "Cha Cha." Yes, seriously.

Was a striker until he reached the U-17 level, when he was converted to a central defender.

Has been named to the SWO T&T Team of the Month by SOCAWarriors.net, a T&T-specific blog. This particular team of the month is comprised of players from all levels of T&T national teams, based upon recent play for both their club teams and country.

One of the team of the month posts had this to say about Cyrus:

"His only deficiency is his eagerness to get the ball off his feet and in the process he sometimes makes bad judgments with his passing, something which I'm sure is linked to his inexperience."

Given the fact that he is still only 20 years old and has only played in defense for three years, give or take some months, it sounds like his game as a whole has evolved, thus I expect this current deficiency to do so, too.

Cyrus has yet to notch his first senior national team goal, but he has been credited with a handful of goals in the past couple years for his club team, so one would be lead to believe that he either still possesses that attacking mindset from his days as a striker, or he is a threat on set pieces. Or, in a perfect world, both could be the case.

------------------------

Keep in mind that similar trials in 2010 were how guys like Ryan Smith, Craig Rocastle and Stephane Auvray made the 2010 Kansas City Wizards squad out of preseason training. Then again, didn't Pablo Escobar come out of that, too?

Either way, it will be interesting to see how this pair performs in January and February 2011, how they mesh with the current players on the roster, and whether they can transition previous success on the club and country levels to a contract in Major League Soccer.

If either sounds more likely to be offered a contract next month, Cyrus sounds like the player further along in his development, and one that could possibly help in the not-so-distant future; whereas as Bateau seems a bit more of a prospect for the future. One thing that each player does have going for them, though, is the fact that they will have someone that each has a prior relationship and playing experience with to go through this process in a foreign country, in each other.

For the bit transcribed here, you can fast-forward to about the 3:15 mark in this YouTube clip (the whole thing is pretty funny, though probably not kid- or work-safe, depending on how well your kids or coworkers understand British accents. ;-)

Ali: Now Beckham, do you reckon the better the footballer you is, the fitter the girl you go out with?

Beckham: Obviously.

Ali: So, you is the best at football, ya know. So you gets Posh. So does Sporty Spice go out with someone from Sc**thorpe United?

Victoria: [laughing] That's horrible!

Ali: What do you mean?

Victorai: That's my friend, and she's lovely.

Ali: Exactly! Why? Is you tryin' to say Sc**thorpe is not a good team?

Victoria: [laughing] Yes!

Ali: 'Cause that is a horrible thing to say about them.

All this talk....right now i find it hard to pick a decent trinidad team without looking back at the past. This might work

Carlos Julius Marshall LB(? find one(maybe thomson))
      Birchall Hyland
          Paul/Noel
         Kenwyn(target man) Roberts/jaggy(runner/hardworker)

jus a bad time to hold de tournament.....caribbean cup should work to fit into all the leagues schedules.....i mean if it was in trinidad and i kno that no top players gonna be in the cup...why would i go watch. The cup suppose to be a business....to attract a crowd it should have the best players there....if african nations cup drawing they players back at a stretch when the player teams can adjust cause they kno most of their players in europe....why the caribbean cup will run during mls play offs and usl qualifiers if most of the caribbean players in mls and usl......im sure the top teams(trinidad, jamaica, haiti) will feel the pain....right now, we can't touch kenwyn(to important to stoke), scotland(lighting up for town), carlos(tryna get back on roy goodside)...if u glance at a trinis in action thread....every professional on there is too old or needs to be at there club to keep there job. What about Jake Thomson...he eh gettin no set of sweat...might do him good ...might have been a good idea to look at the college crop way before this tournament had started...but then again....we don't consider the college guys pro until they leave school
