Football / Re: Thread for the T&T vs El Salvador Game (8-Jul-2013).
« on: July 09, 2013, 07:09:46 AM »
Very much improved game for TnT. Definitely less boom kick and more on the ground passing. For portions of the game the El Salvador midfield rad us ragged...constant off the ball movement which opened passing lanes for them. Too often we were waiting for the ball to come to us rather than attack and win. Then, when we got possession, we were giving it away to easily.
That being said, very positive play and we put the ball in the net and had chance to score more.
The second goal we conceded was dunce-ness. That run began in the midfield by and nobody picked it up. Saddist just breezed out to the right side and two of our defenders ran towards him. Zelaya in the middle had our third defender running behind him and it was a no brainer. Lapse there.

Power looked like he picked up a injury in extra time....hope he is ok.

Good result...though with the Honduras victory over Haiti, we have to get them 3 points against Haiti to make it easier for the final game.

The running ragged was the result of midfielders not tracking vertical runs from the El Salvador central midfield.  The initial pressing and team shape looks good but once the ball got goal side of the Mids they were ball watching.  Check the video.  the hole  between central defenders and central mids  was the target for launching El Salvador into the attacking 1/3

Tony Pulis and Dave Jones Watch the Tony Pulis interview on BBC TWO Wales, Friday 1 April, 2100 BST

Stoke manager Tony Pulis says his friend Dave Jones is under pressure amid Cardiff City's bid for promotion to the Premier League.

The Bluebirds lie fourth in the Championship as they host Derby County on Saturday in the first of eight remaining games.

Pulis said: "I think Dave will know that he's under pressure this year.

"I think that everybody expects and he's got an array of talent there that really should be there or thereabouts."

Jones' side have won only once in their last five outings, but remain one place behind Welsh rivals Swansea with Norwich second and Queens Park Rangers leading the division.

Leeds United and Nottingham Forest complete the play-off places going into the weekend's games.

Speaking to BBC TWO Wales' Friday Sport Wales programme, Pulis said the fine line between success and failure can often be out of a manager's hand.

"You need a little bit of luck and a bit of good fortune as well and Dave will know that as much as anybody else," said Newport-born Pulis, who guided Stoke City to Premier League promotion in 2008.

"Being a manager that can be the difference between winning and losing and Dave will be hoping, as much as anybody else - [Swansea boss] Brendan [Rodgers] will as well - that lady luck falls their way in the back end of the season.

"If it does, the two of them could be playing in the Premiership next season."

Cardiff's last taste of success came in 2003 when Andy Campbell scored the only goal to win disappointing League One play-off final against Queens Park Rangers.

Jones says the biggest hurdle facing the current crop of players as they chase their goal is the lack of previous winning experiences to draw upon.

He said: "There are still a lot of twists and turns - there have been over the last few weeks - before the international break there was swapping and changing, some crazy results , some good results and some bad results and that's for everybody.

"It comes to this stage and the hardest part at this time is getting that first trophy or that first promotion.

"It's always been the difficult part. I've been fortunate enough in my time that I've had five as a coach and manager and sometimes people forget that.

"But it's difficult. The players try their best and work hard because when they don't get the result that everybody wants they're either poor players or they're not trying or something like that.

"That's not the case, they're just tick-box standard things that get thrown at people."

Some people are blinded by hate. You sure you see Greg Lalas http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greg_Lalas in that game

How are "people" blinded by hate... the comments are directed at Alexi Lalas.  "Blinded by hate" implies an irrational hate... there is nothing irrational about the comments directed at Alexi Lalas... unless you care to argue otherwise.

Admittedly I didn't pay close enough attention to who the speaker was... I took one look at the Lalas name and that it was a Goal.com article and dismissed it without wasting my time reading it.  That's not blind hate that's the odds against reading anything worthwhile from Goal.com or Alexi Lalas working against them.

Man see Lalas an gone off, up to now dem eh even watch de fus name to kno is Alexi dat contributing to the article :rotfl:

Killa youself off yuh meds or what... yuh think is really "Greg" Lalas men talking about?  Greg Lalas never defended Yorke.

Actually I am blinded by hate. When I see that red head fool I does froth at the mouth.  He, Jack and Charlie Weis does make me get so. ;D

The campaign is over, now we get the wringing of hands and the gnashing of teeth.
That is to be expected.

The bottom line: We are not good enough.
Period
Full Stop.

But unlike a lot of the reactionists on this board, I have hope.
We are playing better than we have in years (at least since Wim left).
This is a team that will be in transition as we figure out ways to replace the 2006 players.
Understand. The team you're seeing now is pretty close to the team you will be seeing in 2010.

The 2010 Caribbean cup is up next. It will probably be the qualifier for the 2011 gold cup. The work continues.

We need to stop hoping for the quick fix from some "big name" coach. The closest we had to a serious coaching program was from Wim, and we know you loved him so much.

I have seen T&T play without pride and without effort. This is not that team.
Remember Richmond, VA in 1996? Foxboro in 2001?

Let the coach do his work. If we can't dominate the 2010 Caribbean cup, then we can talk about who is out of their league.

What is good football to you? Football is not only played forward.

The objectives of the game are to get behind the defense and score while preventig the other team from doing same. How you get there depends on the coach's interpretation and vision of the principles of play and the players' ability to implement that vision collectively and consistently over 90 minutes in every game.

13
Blaming the back 4 for the shelling is an overly simplistic way to analyze the defensive breakdowns.

We should try to figure out why there is never any pressure on the forward, defense splitting passes that either penetrate our back line or create 1v1 situations with forwards running full speed at central defenders.

What's this hatred of foreign coach thing ? like we forgetting verity and beenie or what ? or what about Brunner and Casa Grande and de bennedicts coach ?
these people have contributed to the development of football in T&T in a significant way ...some for actually developing players , others for showing how with a little more organisation and professionalism a bunch of players could play like a team.
I for one not supporting no " we eh want no foreign coach ting " that is crazy
Look at england wid all dem titled coaches ....who do they have now ....
Real madrid gone foreign, Chelsea gone foreign, manchester united gone foreign, Costa rica gone foreign, paraguay gone foreign, arsenal,  ..W Connection and all gone foreign !
I could go on ...the list is long
I not saying you should not invest in local coaches ..in fact I have been saying that for years but until we get some experience we must rely on expertise from abroad.
UTT, UDECOTT, UWI, ii...nstitutions recognising that getting the job done is the primary focus all use foreign expertise....what allyuh saying ..dat if we had mario Zagallo for 4 years, men woudda still be mistrappin in world cup competition ?

As you point out, foreign coaching resources can meet an immediate need at senior club or national team level.  There is easy justification for this. "We have an international tournament/league to play and win. Find the best available coaching for the team".

The coaching needs of an overall development program reach far beyond the national youth teams or one or 2 clubs with foreign coaches. Properly trained local coaches for all youth age groups are required so that the job of generating technical, tactical, fit players is done ealry in the player's career.  If that happens, the national program can focus on wining games and tournaments as opposed to teaching the basics.  Some might say that your best coaches should be working with your youngest players.........

Licenses and youth development are great first steps but the fact is we consistently produce international caliber pros in 3 positions.

Striker
Center Back
Goal Keeper

Where we seem to be deficient is in the midfield and outside fullback positions. Who is teaching our players to play in those roles?  Why can't the players make the grade beyond local club level? How do we fix it?

Football / Re: Are we losing our magic.
« on: September 28, 2009, 08:28:31 AM »
This is age group ball we talking bout.  T&T is more a U19 than a U 20 team. Jake is 20  years 4 months so he has almost a year on the rest of the team in terms of maturity and development.  Unless you looking at special players like messi or fabregas, that age difference will always show on the field in age group ball (John D or Sando Tech 1980s?)

The average age of the T&T starting 11 on  Thursday was 19 yrs 2 months.
The average age of the Egypt team was 19 years 7 months. Italy will be 19 years 8 months. Paraguay will be around 19 years 7 months.

« on: September 25, 2009, 07:18:15 AM »
Player development doesn't start at U17. It should produce visible results in terms of a pool technically sound and tactically aware players by U17.

In order to produce quality players, you need quality coaching.  If the TD doesn't develop a pool of coaches capable of teaching proper technique to youngsters from age 6 -10 , then the players will be always at a disadvantage and need remedial work as they progress through the age groups through senior level.

The model that the TD seem to be trying to create seems to be get them young and teach them right so that the senior national coaches don't have to worry about basics.......

Football / Re: football philosophy: death of possession football?
« on: July 13, 2009, 12:25:20 PM »
The old man made a correct but out of context statement.  There needs to be a purpose for possession. What does the team on the field intend to get out of their holding the ball?

The primary purpose of possession is to move the ball and players into good attacking positions to get behind the defense and score.  The value derived here can be measured in goals.  A 3 pass possession resulting in a goal = A 15 pass possession resulting in a goal

The secondary purpose of possession is to keep the ball away from the opponent so they have less opportunities to score. The value derived here is indirect or psychological at best but important.

B for his efforts, C for his results. He is very brave and patriotic to to take on a difficult and thankless task like this.  Right man wrong time for this job.

The coach's job is to put the team in the best possible position to win or, at least, steal points
He can accomplish this through:

Player selection
The issues here are obvious. The pool of decent level players with a record of moderate success at CONCACAF level is very small

Physical preparation
He can make sure he selects fit players but fitness is a player and his club's responsibility

Tactical instruction
Being knowledgeable and having the ability to effectively communicate the knowledge and have the team produce his vision of football consistently in games is a must. If the players don't come to him having developed senior level tactical awareness through their careers, he can't work miracles in 2 months or 12 at this level.

Game planning
Go for broke or be economical and minimize potential damage inflicted by opponent? 1 is for the fans the other to keep his job

In game substitution and tactical adjustments
Player pool depth and player tactical awareness are constraining factors

Strategic Planning
Should start during the world cup years and run in  4 year cycles.  To pick up a team 1 year before a World Cup is admirable but no mid level team would be able to turn around a losing situation without luck and help form other teams

Player Development
Not the coaches' primary job but a contributing factor to his success. If the pipeline of Pro League, U17, U20 , and U23 players is not producing international quality players from a technical, fitness and tactical awareness standpoint, the national coach will be stuck doing remedial work instead of implementing a strategic plan geared towards winning in CONCACAF

Inspiring and Motivating
This shouldn't be a major factor at this level. If he needs to do that then he has players who aren't ready.

Public Relations
Keeping the public behind the team regardless of results. So far so good but you only get a "new coach" pass for but so long.

CLARIFICATION MEMO No. 7
Section: Personnel & Administrative Criteria
Criterion: P.05
Subject: Football Staff - Head Coach
Date: 12.01.2004
Objective
To clarify UEFA’s position with regard to the implementation of the personnel and administrative criterion P.05 “Football Staff – Head Coach” defined in chapter 8 of the UEFA club licensing manual V1.0 (hereafter, UEFA manual) taking also into account the discussions with the national associations during the workshop in Geneva.
I. Regulations as per UEFA Manual
P.05
B
FOOTBALL STAFF - HEAD COACH
Each licence applicant must appoint a head coach and define his or her rights and duties in writing.
The head coach must hold:
Alternative 1: the “UEFA Pro diploma”,
Alternative 2: the highest national coaching diploma/certificate of the national association of the territory on which the licence applicant is situated,
Alternative 3: a „recognition of competence issued by the national association if he or she already has a minimum of five year's practical experience as head coach in professional football and in one of the UEFA member associations.
Please also refer to P.11.
UEFA recommends that the recognition of competence be limited to a certain time period so that each head coach must undergo a coach education programme according to the requirements of the national association. The head coach is responsible for the selection, tactics and training of the first squad of the club.
II. Application for season 2004/05 and until further notice:
UEFA is aware that the application of the above criterion could cause problems especially to those clubs, which engaged their head coach prior to its implementation and who has not the required minimum qualification. To avoid clubs taking unpopular decisions and to give head coaches the necessary time to adapt to the new rule the

UEFA Club Licensing System
UEFA Administration clarifies that for the season 2004/05 and until further notice the following applies:
a) Head coach under contract but without the necessary qualification
I. For licensing purposes a head coach, who does not fulfil the requested minimum requirements as foreseen by criterion P.05 of the UEFA Manual at the submission date to the license (as defined in the national club licensing manual) may be deemed in compliance with the criterion, if he/she was already under contract as head coach with the same license applicant prior to the accreditation of the national licensing manual.
II. Any head coach not in possession of the minimum qualification as foreseen by criterion P.05 may be deemed in compliance with the criterion, if the club proves that he/she has already started the required education course (recognized by the license) allowing him/her to achieve the required minimum qualification. The simple inscription to such an education course is not sufficient.
b) Head coach temporarily not in function – temporary replacement
I. For licensing purposes a head coach who cannot temporarily act in his/her function out of reasons that are beyond the control of the license applicant (illness, accident etc.) may be replaced, for a limited period, which has to be agreed with the license, by another coach of the license applicant not fulfilling criterion P.05. UEFA defines that such a period should not be longer than half a season.
II. Any external person replacing the head coach needs the necessary coach qualification according to criterion P.05.
c) License applicant releases head coach during the season – Contracting a new head coach
If the license applicant releases its head coach during the season for any reason, it must engage a new head coach, who either
- fulfils the required coach qualification according to criterion P.05 or
- fulfils the condition as described under a) II above.
UEFA finally stresses that the criterion P.05 cannot be fulfilled through an assistant coach or any third person of the applicant who has the required coach qualification.
We thank you for taking note and please contact the UEFA club licensing team for any further question.

« on: May 19, 2009, 01:31:53 PM »
If it's true that Latapy is concentrating on phsycial fitness levels, that's a good thing.

It might be that players are not physically in condition to be playing the game competitively at this level.  That's an important and necessary first step.

But being physically fit doesn't mean mentally fit.  We play the game too slow in this country and that's very true.  Is not a brain wave Latas have.  Any casual observer can notice that.  The problem is, even if we get to peak physical fitness, are we able to play EFFECTIVELY at speed?  What's the speed of our decision making?  Are we TECHNICALLY able to play at speed?

I have my doubts but yuh have to start somewhere.  Good luck Latas.

We tend to approach the technique and mental aspects of the game without the element of pressure.  If men flying at you right through during training then you will likely be able to deal with it in a game.  If you train at slow jogging pace, with not even a hint of pressure, any decent baller will look skillful and tactically aware.  Players have to commit to proper, aggressive defending (I don't mean pelting blade) in training in order for their teammates to learn how to deal with it in real game situations.  Waiting until the crowd in the stands and the next team reach to turn up the intensity is not going to cut it.
