DeLeon’s late goal lifts D.C. United into Eastern final
By Thomas Floyd (The Washington Times)

A superstorm, a nor’easter and a pair of corresponding postponements stood between D.C. United and the New York Red Bulls playing their decisive playoff contest as planned. But when the match finally unfolded Thursday at Red Bull Arena, the drama proved worth the wait.

As the final whistle blew, United rookie Nick DeLeon sprinted, arms outstretched, to the roughly 300 United fans in attendance, many of whom had made the trip up Interstate 95 for the second straight day.
This high-flying United team is on a mission, one Mother Nature could only delay. On to the Eastern Conference final it goes.

“Just being a part of this group, it’s been a great journey,” DeLeon said. “It’s not over yet. But it’s been a great ride.”

Paced by a penalty-kick stop from backup goalkeeper Joe Willis, a savvy assist by veteran right back Robbie Russell, and a calm 88th-minute finish by DeLeon, United defeated New York 1-0 on Thursday to claim the two-game, total-goals conference semifinal by a 2-1 aggregate score.

United, who this season ended a four-year playoff drought, will open the Eastern Conference final Sunday at fifth-seeded Houston after the Dynamo upset first-place Sporting Kansas City in the other semifinal.

While DeLeon has enjoyed a stellar campaign, plying for Rookie of the Year honors, Russell made his first start since July 15 and Willis saw his first minutes since July 21. For a squad that remains undefeated (6-0-3) since reigning league MVP Dwayne De Rosario went down with a mid-September knee injury, the role of hero has been shared by prominent and unlikely figures alike.

“This team, it doesn’t matter who you’re putting on the field,” Russell said. “Everyone comes up with big plays.”

In a series defined by myriad twists of fate, it was only appropriate this match took a wild turn late. Put in alone on Bill Hamid in the 71st minute, New York forward Kenny Cooper rounded the charging United goalkeeper and fell to the turf, drawing a penalty kick and a red card.

Initially, Cooper converted from the spot after Willis came in cold. But referee Mark Geiger waved the goal off for encroachment — the same call he made against D.C. to cost the side a win over Philadelphia in August.

When Cooper retook the shot, Willis pushed it aside.

“You don’t have a lot of time to think,” Willis said of his abrupt entrance. “You’ve just got to get ready and get out there.”

Added coach Ben Olsen: “We bailed another guy out. We bailed Bill out. And that has been the M.O. of this team. They continue to do that when the chips are down, and there is a certain spirit about them.”

Minutes later, Red Bulls defender Rafa Marquez — a Mexican star renowned for his hot temper — received a second yellow card and was sent off, evening the sides at 10 players apiece.

With the series seemingly destined for overtime, DeLeon made his mark. Making a diagonal run behind the New York defense, he stayed onside thanks to lagging Red Bulls right back Connor Lade, latched onto a through ball from Russell, and slotted a shot past Luis Robles.

“[Russell] had a good disguised ball, and I just put my head down and hit the ball,” DeLeon said. “I wasn’t aiming anywhere.”

The aggregate win was United’s first playoff series triumph since a 2-1 victory over the Red Bulls in 2006, continuing a yearlong resurgence for what historically has been the league’s most successful club.
Second-seeded D.C. (17-10-7) and No. 3 New York (16-9-9) traded own goals for a 1-1 draw at RFK Stadium on Saturday in Game 1.

Originally set to be hosted by United on Wednesday, this decisive second leg was moved to Red Bull Arena when the organizations last week swapped home playoff dates following Superstorm Sandy. In theory, the switch was made to give the New York metropolitan area more time to recover from the storm’s devastation.

But the weather again intervened. As a nor’easter struck the region, a steady stream of wet snow caused an hour-long delay Wednesday. When it became evident the flakes were falling faster than they could be shoveled, the match was postponed altogether.

Some 700 United fans traveled Wednesday, only to head straight back to the District after the postponement. But that did not stop many from hopping on a league-provided bus Thursday to again make the trip.

“This organization has been through some tough years, and these fans have suffered,” Olsen said. “They were spoiled early, and then they went through a drought. So this gives them hope. This gives them excitement.”

Yes, I know LeRoy and His family, and the only thing that matters to Nick is having the relationship he has now with his father, he could have chosen to go the hating, blaming, finger pointing, suspicious of his father route his whole life just like many of us misserable people would, but he chose to love his father and create something new going forward.  Make no mistake, it was Nick that followed his heart and asked for the relationship with his dad.  The way of love is the way of creation, and Nick DeLeon is a creator.  He loves his family and he loves soccer.  You all watch his ROTY highlights, and see.  The best is yet to come!  All this other stuff you all talken about is just speculation.
If you want to know bout who got Nick there, someone should call and interview his mom.  She had the same frustrations with Nicks play as his father did, and she stuck it out and walked him through the path he chose.  She is a champion too, she gave up her chance to play with the womans Olympic team the year they made all the hubub because she was raising two beautiful kids instead.

Preach it brother. . .But don't get your emotions entangled with anyone who is not in The Know. Talk is cheap and there are many who let their tongues loose.
Support and love your family. . .
love to you brotha - was not being speacific, just loving Nick.  The guy that wrote that article did a great job.  Looks like he knew Nick and was trying to tell his story, cause Nick loves his pop!

The reason i'm asking these questions is because i'm trying to get a sense of who he might want to play for,the thing is his father played for T&T and has he has a brother and sister that played also,it's the reason he may want to play for T&T,also it's more complicated to get on a US national team than T&T if you all get my reasoning.
I feel ya my friend.  Like I said, he loves Trini, and loves his dad to no end.  So what he wants and how it will work is yet to be seen. I finally talked to Dilly today, and I did not get a chance to ask all the questions of him I wanted cause he just arrived at practice.  So no answers on the other child, but y'all keep worken it out.  Dilly is putting in the time with the kids, and that is were it starts.

Lovingthislife,i might be wrong so i'm hoping you can help me here.Does Deley have a son that used to be with our national Youth team some years ago,to me like he had a son that was in the national setup when i was back home coaching,i can't remember his name could you confirm this for me?i don't know how or where he ended up.
I know his sister jessica played for the T & T national team and she is not one step behind Nick.  And I will figure out if Uncle had any others play.
To me he had a son born in T&T,come on family these things should be on your fingertips.
I know he had 4 other children beside my two cousins.  I just found out about that a short time ago.  So I would not know about them.  Im looking forward to meeting these other parts of my family though.

looks like he could show some of our players a thing or two about intensity.
love it!  You and I can be on the side of loving soccer, and hoping that whatever he brings, and wherever he plays he brings and inspires love for this sport, and love of life.

Well Sam, and all the rest of you.  Your right!  You should not want anyone that does not WANT to play for T & T.  And anyone that plays for your national team should be in love with the ball, the game and the country.  they should have such focus and intensity that it would be impossible for them to suck.  Find some people like that, and your federatoin will be fantastic.

By the way Nick is still young.  He is not always sure what he wants.  So this year will be big for him, and fun for soccer.  So for the love of soccer, keep your love for DeLeon.  You never know what possitive things will come to you, trini, and soccer as a whole.  Lets vote for the love of soccer, and desire for competition.

My good partner was one of the coaches at UNLV till 2010. I'll ask him about DeLeon since he prolly had a role in recruiting him.
what is your partners name
Chad Brown
ya, I know some of his coaches and I do not believe he is close to chad any more.  If you wanna talk to someone about him you probably wanna talk to Mario.
I spoke to my friend and he knows him pretty well from UNLV and now the Big East since he coaches at WVU. Both the former head coach of UNLV and Chad left for Louisville and WVU respectively and the head coach took DeLeon with him. He had alot of positive things to say about him and even stated that DeLeon should play in the MLS and coming to think of it, I remember him now from watching last year's NCAA final against Akron.

yup, last year was his coming out party, and next year he will play, have fun, and be better than ever.

I think the first person to check if you want to get info on Deley is the man himself,i was home recently and before i left i got his number from Steve David because i wanted to touch base with him, some how i did not because he is a busy man with the assignment he has in Point,i was fortunate to have played against him at one time or another so we know each other.
I know calling my uncle would be best, but just like you said.  Im in AZ nad he is not.  Jus try getting him to pay attention to you if you live in AZ.  He is busy working on the nation youth sports program.  and who knows if he ever kept anything around of his footage, and pics.  he never showed us any growing up.

Oh yes, I almost forgot to say.  I was talking to Nick last night, and his first choice is the U.S. National Team.  He could play for anyone really, and as soon as he puts the finishing touches on his footwork, and his mind.  No one on a futobol/soccer field will be able to beat him.  He could easily be that face that gets the U.S. involved and interested in soccer.  He is skilled, quick, thinks quick, physical, loves the game, and he is good looken.  He is not just quick, he faster with the ball then most men trying to run without the ball.  Everyone loves him.  So you will get to watch him on the world stage, no worries.

He did tell me, however, that T & T is a great secondary choice just because of his father and the history of it.

Thank you all for saying such nice things about my cousin.  This is so much fun for me.  I have heard what people have said about my uncle for so many years.  But it all seemed like the past.  And  here you are, remembering him in all his glory.  Make no mistake, Nick is a DeLeon.  It will be so much fun watching him finish up this season.
