The foreign factor

Trinidad went into Guyana needing only a draw to survive until the return leg at home three days after, but I believe, from my experience as a coach, that Trinidad’s German manager, Otto Pfister, just couldn’t muster a convincing enough pre-game, motivational speech that was needed on Friday, one that should have conjured a strong feeling of patriotism to fire up the players. This was an international game and the ultimate motivation lies in a feeling of patriotism, which has to move the players. It must have been difficult to do, coming from Pfister, a virtual stranger to Trinidad, who obviously has no deep ties to or feelings for the country. Coaches have to be believable to be able to convince players into action, and this is a downside to having a foreign coach.

First thought when I saw this: Shabazz is a foreign coach too.

just cuz costa rica draw with spain doesn't mean they can beat up on trini.... football is a funny sport.

Granted. But the difference between this result and our latest results is still very notable.

Thought the draw against marseille was a fair result and beneficial. Reminds the guys not to get too carried away plus it was a clean sheet aka Verminator , gave RVP a rest and Kos, Park a debut.
Confirmed that Santos is an unfit defensive liability ... Walcott seems to be getting out of the funk he has been in.
And I would still start Rosicky in front of Ramsey he's simply more creative and sharper and better!!

I am not sure how I feel about the Ramsey-Rosicky thing. I think Rosicky has so much more technical ability. But Ramsey has so much more end product.

I go to BU, so I went and watched him play a few games this season. He's an intelligent player. Good dribbler, decent speed, and has a good snap shot. Only thing is he is kind of small and not that powerful.

GENIUS... I feel sorry for the people away that not getting to see this player.. too bad he is a late bloomer like Arshavin but total quality
i believe i was the first man on here tuh big up hector, and when latas excluded him from his team until the last game of the hex vs mexico where he came on and put in that great cross for kerry baptiste 2nd goal, i thought this yute was the new carlos edwards (as in right winger) and latas can't even see that.

Eh-heh...and when was this?  :whistling:  :)

I don't know who's the first, but I eh go lie. I give TI the crown based on my memory. Wayyyyy back in the day he had said that Hardest (YUP!) was grooming a youth name Hughton Hector. And I think Hector was school boy age at the time. It sound jokey but I dead serious. ;D

I remember when we start off bad men come on here calling for Arsene head so when I saw this article I had to put it on here.
Had a guy here who claim he been supporting Arsenal since the 80's cyah remember he f**king name and yet big article Arsene must go .... i go look .. prick!!!

This one is about Walcott .. granted he playing shit but fans are seriously fickle!

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/909884-debate-about-walcotts-future-at-arsenal-highlights-the-danger-of-emotionalism

Not that some fans aren't fickle, but articles like that talk as if fans share one collective voice. The Arsenal fans who are saying we should let Walcott go aren't necessarily the same ones who jump on his bandwagon after a few performances. More than likely, it's two separate groups of people - the ones who don't like Walcott and the ones who do.

I wouldnt say we back in bsuiness yet... but yuh could slowly see the team starting to gell and get it's identity lemme put it this way Manu not hitting we 8 again that team is def not this team!!!

That team that get blow out from Man U was the weakest team I ever see Arsenal field and I been following them since Wrighty joined from Palace. We not in full flight yet is true. We need to not be so dependent on RvP for goals. The rest of men need to step up. Give Ox some defensive training and let him challenge Theo for his spot because the man frustrating the hell outta me. And where the hell is Park?!? He pullin a Tevez or what? Man scoring goals like it goin outta style for South Korea but no sight of him for the club.

Guys like Chamberlain and Park will get their chance in due time. I think Wenger just assimilating men slowly and trying to find a balance between new players and old. The starting eleven already had Jenkinson, Mertesacker, Arteta, and Gervinho. That's four new men. Add Santos and Benayoun in the second half that's a squad where half your players are new to playing together, and in most cases new to the premier league. Good news is the depth is there.

I understand Otto fustration. But what allyuh or he wants to players to do? if the club or agents work up a deal and it appears to be more money for the player, then more than likely he will take the offer. in the past we used to criticise players for wanting to play only in the "comfort zone" of English and Scotish football. We all used to say(even me) that they should try the continent, with the thinking that anything is better that the local pro-league. Don't say I lie, becuase all of us use to say players dying a slow death that at home and should explore foreign. Well that is what we get. Is it good or bad. Well it bad for WC coach.

I think the main part of Pfister frustration is that a player will miss a WCQ on an international date to go on a trial. I don't know. But where else in the World does that happen? That they're going to "nothing leagues" that, are far away, and making little money adds insult to injury because he sees that they're being exploited. But, I don't think his beef is just that they're travelling far and wide. It's more that agents are doing whatever they want, whenever they want and "treating the players like animals".

I think we have to look in the mirror and concede that we lack quality, and quit it with the superiority complex. We're stuck in a mindset that we're supposed to beat teams like Bermuda just by showing up...that's obviously not the case

Exactly.

I wonder if the players think like that too and go into these game overconfident/complacent.

The kid scoring for fun it's criminal to leave him on the bench with ramsey and walcott playing that level of shit!!
Cyah really see how Ramsey comes into it for him, unless you want to pull RVP back there and put someone else to strike with AOC on the wing. A member here was saying take off Ramsey and play RVP there with Theo going up front and AOC on the wing. Similar, in concept if not in quality, to the Rooney/Chicharito/Nani triangle United have.

The truth is I would either do the midfield like this   Coquerine and Song as the two defensive mids and give Arteta the attacking role or Arteta and Song the two defensive mids and give Rosicky the attacking mid role and put AOC up top with Gervinho and RVP ..... Van Persie is our best scoring option no way I'm moving him from that role ..... it simply means the other players in their roles need to step up ...

Some time ago I would have been with you on the Rosicky call but I am starting to lose faith in him. He has a lot better technique than Ramsey and you see it in his turns and first touch, but he is missing something that I can't quite put a finger on in terms of creativity. I almost feel like Rosicky has looked better when playing on the wing than in the middle. I like the idea of Arteta and Song holding with RVP sitting behind the main striker. But if not RVP, I would put a mobile player like Benayoun, Chamberlain or even Gervinho behind the striker. Most times Ramsey gets the ball under pressure you can expect a backwards pass, those other men that I name have more ability to get out of a tight situation and cause the opposition defense a little more panic. Rosicky has it too and I would love to see the man get back to where we know he could be. But of late I find him either too inconsistent or lacking in terms of final product.

So, is Johan Djourou going through a slump now or was his good form in December 2010-February 2011 a flash in the pan?

I don't know about good or bad form. i do know he is NOT a defender.
Put him in the midfield. As I said before, he has all the physical attributes to make a good defender, but has no idea what's going on back there.

He is not good enough on the ball to be a midfielder. I don't care where he started his career. Pros and "back in the day" is two different things. After all, Ashley Cole was a striker too.

How can you say it was offside but say the positioning was poor, when being offside is an outcome of the defensive positioning? Because he was behind the guy means nothing if he stepped up in time.

How can I say it?  Just as I did... yuh can't read?  He did not "step up" in time he absent-mindedly drifted forward... everything about his defending on that goal was passive and without focus.  It is clear from his body language that he wasn't actively trying to step up to work the offside trap, and by failing to do so he made the call close enough for it to go against his team.  His positioning was poor because he failed to get ball side of the attacking player.  It is elementary for any defender to position himself between the ball and the man... he was a spectator on the play, not only wasn't he trying to play Yakubu offside, but neither was he trying to deny him in the box.  If you want to argue and fight up to defend that kinda defending then by all means be my guest.

Was Yakubu offside?  Yes, absolutely.  But even if his left foot was six inches towards midfield and he wasn't leaning, putting him perfectly in line with Santos... in fact even if he was comfortably onside that goal was still scoring because of poor defending by Santos and Van Persie.  Offside didn't cause that goal, it was merely incidental to it.  Should the flag have gone up regardless? Absolutely.  But the defending was poor, I really don't see how you can say any differently.

I not fighting up anything you know. I just find it pointless to be blaming a defender for an non-call by an assistant referee. Yes, it was close. Yes, he could have stepped up more. Yes, he could have been positioned differently. But all that doesn't really matter. Who cares if he would have still scored if he was onside? Why does that even mean anything? The point is he was off and the referee didn't see it. Everything else is secondary and has nothing to do with the offside rule. It was a tough call and it happens. On another day day the assistant might have raised his flag but this time arsenal were unlucky. That's football.  :beermug:

Bakes you are wrong, that offside was big time. The lineman was not even in line with the last defender. The fraction in side the 6 yard box is a big deal. He was clearly and plainly offside, no replay was necessary to show he was.

I am not arguing that he wasn't offside... when I say Santos "kept him on" I meant in the eyes of the linesman.  He scored because the defending was poor not because he was 6 inches offside... it is an absolute exaggeration to be saying he was "clearly and plainly" offside, replays showed just how close it was and there was nothing clear or plain about it and it didn't gain him any advantage.  The cross came in from the right side of the box and there was no one in front of him to deny the pass, Santos was on his back.  That is what led to the goal, Santos' poor positioning... offside would have just bailed him out.  That's like jumping off a building then complaining that the safety net failed.

How can you say it was offside but say the positioning was poor, when being offside is an outcome of the defensive positioning? Because he was behind the guy means nothing if he stepped up in time.

Mertsaker cannot jump! We knew he would be slow but his strength was supposed to be his heading ability which I was not sold on today. Cahill might have actually been a better option!!! The season is still young though.

If anybody thinking that Mertesacker's strength was buttin a ball, then they were sadly misinformed.  People fall into that trap because he so tall.  But Crouch and Dennis Lawrence are tall too but below average headers of the ball.

Mertesacker's strengths are his positional play and the fact that when he makes a tackle, it's clean, he invariably takes the ball away from the attacker (as happened on a few occasions in this game...notably a double take away in the first half), and doesn't tend to give away needless free kicks in dangerous areas.  Matter of fact, his tackling percentage without getting booked (yes...they keep track of these things) is so high, his nickname in Germany is "Mr. Clean".

Oh...BTW....Sinclair from Swansea is the first player I see thus far dat had Sagna in school.

Now I eh know if Sangna simply not match fit, or if he comin off an injury, or if is jes Sinclair mash him up like a novice.  But Sagna couldn't contain him whole match.

Sinclair is definitely one to watch this season.

I wouldn't say Crouch or Dennis are below average headers of the ball, but I hear what you saying. I was looking forward to seeing Mertesacker cause I didn't know much about the player other than his track record (aka wikipedia profile). He looked a lot slow and his build makes him look clumsy but he did all the right things. And you see what you said there about giving away unnecessary free kicks in dangerous areas - I'm so happy to read that cause that seems to be Arsenal's specialty of late.

Truth about the Traore transfer  ;D ;D

Arsene Wenger is notoriously secretive about his transfer activity, and the latest rumor from an equally notorious source has given us plenty of reason to believe why this is the case. Word on the back pages of scrap book somewhere is that Arsenal actually paid QPR to take Senegalese left back Armand Traore off of the Gunners books. Just when we thought the modern transfer window could not get any more outrageous…

The fee, reported to be around £7million pounds, was negotiated between the two clubs moments after the final whistle of Arsenal’s humiliating 8-2 loss to Manchester United. QPR accepted, but not before turning down a ‘derisory’ bid thought to be around £2 million plus Armand.

It’s the first time in the history of the Premier League transfer window that a team has received a transfer fee for a player coming in, and (despite being the only transfer of this nature) Traore’s move has also been officially listed as a Premiership record for the ‘lowest’ fee ever paid by a club. The figure also sets a QPR transfer fee record surpassing the £6 million the club received from Newcastle United for Les Ferdinand in June 1995.

An unnamed source commented: “We couldn’t believe it when Arsenal made the offer. It just said that they would give us Armand Traore and cash, but didn’t say who they were interested in getting in return. I sat waiting for the rest of the fax… I thought that they must be after one of our academy prospects.”

Meanwhile it is thought that Wenger used complex financial model to compute that with future Champions League qualification at risk, Traore was in fact a £9million liability to the club and that the deal should be viewed as Arsenal clearing its debts – an idea described by club officials as ‘revolutionary’.

With the move completed, Arsenal now have the room to bring in much needed defensive reinforcements. Brazilian international Andre Santos and German stopper Per Mertesacker are thought to be on their way to club. Premiership newboys QPR also see the transfer as a means to bolstering their inexperienced squad and latest news is that they will be using the monies received to buy a new left back.

Just a little kicks I wrote in my blog: http://arsenalnow.blogspot.com/

I disagree with this.. For as much shit that England is their strongest position has always been central defence. The reason is simple, it is a workhorse position that requires little skill and plenty brute force - which falls right down the alley of the average English player.

England has never been wanting for world class stoppers... Tony Adams, Martin Keown, Sol Campbell, Rio Ferdinand, John Terry, Ledley King etc etc etc were/are world class central defenders... The list goes on and on, if Terry and Ferdinand get injured today any of Cahill, Dawson, Upson, Lescott, Johnson, Shawcross could step in and fill in.. I don't think many other national teams have that kinda depth.

Me personally, i woulda spend the extra 10m and take Cahill. The man already familiar with the English league and is a known commodity, he young and he have motivation to push for a spot in the England team. Also yuh cyah overlook the fact that he English, dem kinda men does be valuable in dem "get stuck in" kinda games like Stoke and Arsenal need that.

Per is much more of a gamble.  He could come in and establish himself alongside Vermalean as a solid central defensive pairing but in the same speed he could pop down and get exposed for lack of speed to keep up with the pace of the EPL.

Anyway, anything better than Djourou and Koscielney right now.

I think Ferdinand and Terry are good defenders. But some of those other names you called are not very good at all. Especially Upson and Dawson.

Koscielny not looking as bad as Djourou right now. If anything Koscielny looks physically stronger and his heading has improved. Djourou on the other hand seems to be regressing.

I not sure looking at how many goals a team concedes is a measure of the quality of an individual defender. So using that Bremen stat against Mertesacker doesn't make much sense to me. Also, if you using that to say that Arsenal should go after Cahill instead, I think you should check Bolton stats. Their defensive record is not any better.

at the end of the day Latas is still only iconic in T&T. Not knocking Latas but I find it funny when men love to say this man eh no Latas or this man eh no Dwarika, as if Latas is in the same calibre with Messi or Ronaldo.

Szczesny saved them from losing - That is his job! All the time the media going on and on about Arsenal need a keeper. The problem is the same media were critical of this youth and now he showing signs of developing into  a creditable keeper, they can't accept it. Just wait till me he makes one error. The I told you so's will come out.

You could probably say it's an expectation thing too. People have come to expect Arsenal to drop leads, so when we hold onto one it's lucky. Or people expect Arsenal to out-pass and out-possess opposition so when we don't live up to that, the critics come out. No matter what though, you and GunnerStunner are right. Everyone seems to be waiting for Arsenal to fail so they could attack Wenger.

yeah but you'd expect that we'd have drawn or lost the game based on previous results in games where we had over 60% possession but went on to lose or draw, so why is it when we get the job done it isnt good enough?

Until Arsenal win something or sign a big name, this will continue. Just media hyping the fact that Wenger under pressure from some fans.

Boy seems like in the eyes of everyman and his dog (or so claims the brit press) arsenal can do no right

Had udinese played manu (or someother more "english" team) the same way and same result they would applaud the english masters of withstanding the italian onslaught especially in light of injuries at the back AND the manager being banned AND missing two starters there would be praise glittered upon them

But no, they choose to focus on the negatives constantly

Agreed. Arsenal has two defenders injured and keeps a clean sheet, and instead of saying that Jenkinson did well on his debut/Wenger spotted a gem (this is 19 year old straight from the first division), the twist is that we have no depth. Instead of recognizing that Arsenal might actually now have a dependable GK, the twist is that they were lucky not to concede. If it were van der Sar making those saves last season, maybe he would have gotten some credit. When other teams don't play well but win, the reports praise their ability to dig out results on their bad days.

At the end of the day, each version of the story is just as true as the other. I don't think saying that Arsenal were lucky is any less true than saying Szczesny saved them from losing - it's just a matter of perspective. But you're seeing a certain negativity around everything that Arsenal does nowadays. I guess that's what you get when you don't win a trophy in 6 years, and when you throw away the Carling Cup and your strong league position in the fashion Arsenal did last season.

Imagine Carl Jenkinson makes his competitive debut for Arsenal in a must win Champions League game playing out of position after we lose 2 defenders in 9 minutes. This team just blight!

Tell you what though. We played like crap, lost half our defence, conceded 6 corners and still kept a clean sheet. No way that was happening last year!

Games like this build character one way or the other!!!

i agree...the run to the final in 06 had men like flamini playing left back!

but i glad jenkinson came on and not that old shitsnake squillaci.     but now with all the injuries he might play on sat...lorddddd

Better Jenkinson than Traore. Song and Gervinho out on Saturday as well.

Gervinho and Gibbs were the best for Arsenal today. Heard the Arsenal fans were chanting where's the f%$king money. The wheels are turning on Wenger. He didn't even look comfortable when the cameras were on him during the game.

I thought Szczesny and Song had great performances. Gibbs played well but he looked a little tentative, Gervinho's end product was missing today. But you can see how good a player he is even though he didn't have the most effective game.
