Football / On the topic of "natural" talent
« on: January 26, 2011, 12:46:38 PM »
Recent read a book called Talent is Overrated. The general idea is that they've done numerous studies on performance and the result don't suggest that "natural talent" exists. Regardless of the activity, (whether it was sport, music, business etc.), studies of the top performers in the world (for example Tiger Woods, Mozart etc.) all show that there was nothing "natural" about their ability. Rather than having some sort of natural predisposition, top performance is a function of time committed and quality of practice.

Time committed is usually a function of what age the person started doing their respective activity, and the amount of time per day they practiced. Quality of practice is usually a function of their coach's knowledge and ability to design practice that is deliberately focused on that individual. It also talks about the difference between what average performers call practice (typically repetition), and how top performers practice (termed deliberate practice). The latter is specifically designed to correct what you're not good at.

This is just a brief summary of what I got from it, but it was a very interesting book. It made me think Trinidad football and the commonly heard sentiment that we have a lot of footballing talent. (I recently read an article where a sports writer said we arguably have as much talent per capita as England or Spain ???)

I often ask myself why are we so attached to that idea of our wealth talent, and make it such a significant point, when there really isn't any real way of measuring it. To me its always just been a sort of feel good idea that we throw around that bears no real consequence on the quality of our national football, or doesn't differentiate us from any other country (doesn't every country have tons of talent? how can we even judge?)

I also always think that it's a kind of self defeating idea to believe that we have some sort of a natural advantage through our "talent", because it gives us this inflated (if not false) sense of our potential and (perhaps) fools us into thinking that there's a natural or "granted" element to being a top performer, or that being really one of the best performers at a given activity comes easy* for some people. It can also be bad in that if we fail, we blame our lack of talent rather than or our lack of adequate preparation/practice/dedication. (Or in the case of Trinidad football, blame our coaches because we believe that our players have so much talent!)

*On things being easy for some people what I mean is this. I'm sure if you study the lives of Maradona, Michael Jordan or any top athlete you will find that they started at a really early age, and practiced more than other people. By the time people started saying they were exceptional talents they had most likely already practiced 100s or 1,000s of hours more than other people their age. Sometimes its not as direct a relation between practice and ability, and sometimes genetics do play a role (height, etc), but more often than not the people who pick things up "easier" usually have some sort of "non-natural" development that other people didn't have. (Another thing that's notable is that "child prodigies" often don't end up being the top performers in adulthood.)

Anyway, just my thoughts (particularly after reading that book). Any ideas?

but cricket is the 2nd largest sport in the world

is this fact? i find that hard to believe.

did you know that they will be making 20/20 cricket in the near future an olympic sport? Thats just one exmaple of cricket expanding beyond the south asian dominated base.

that cricket will be an olympic sport may be an example of its expansion but it doesn't say much for its worldwide appeal/popularity. rhythmic gymnastics is an olympic sport.

Looks good as a fashion statement, but no likey as football jersey!

Big Up!

the line between football jerseys (other apparel) and "general fashion" has been getting thinner each year.

was just on the Orlando City site - http://orlandocitysoccer.com/ - and noticed two things that might be of interest.

1. there is another Trini on the side - Stephan Campbell

2. Stoke City is listed as one of the team's partner clubs/sponsors.

Arshavin off his game of late but, truth is, he is important to Arsenal. his contribution in terms of goals and assists this season is very good. also in terms of ability, Arshavin is head and shoulders above most of Arsenal's team.

i feel like fans are being overly critical of Arshavin because of his potential (which is understandable/predictable). but there have been recent games where his play has better than other players on the pitch yet he's been singled out for lack of effort. also at times he's been unlucky, his approach play has been good, but the final pass or shot is cut out.

i watched the Man City game when he came on for Walcott. everyone was saying Walcott should have stayed on but if you look at Walcott's contribution in the second half of that game he did nothing. Arshavin came on and ran at the defense a few times and had a couple dangerous crosses. I also watched the Leeds game and in the first half he was one of arsenal's best players (he did have a horrible second half though).

basically i agree that his game is not where it should be. maybe his fitness is low, maybe his confidence is low. but as long as Arshavin wants to play for arsenal they i would not get rid of him. true he always has this way of looking a bit unfit or lazy, but i think his body language makes him look like he's doing less than he actually is. and if this is just a case of bad form/ a bad patch then wenger is doing the right thing. bring him off the bench, play him in these kinds of games, and when his form is back bring him back into the side.

Bendtner on the other hand, he could go

arsenal lacks real depth. a lot of these players are household names because are a high profile team but, sad to say, they just aren't that good. when playing alongside stronger players they can shine but they are incapable of leading a team. how many of those arsenal players that played today can walk into the starting lineup of another strong squad?

everyone is talking about bendtner and arshavin. i also think that denilson is one of the weak links in arsenal's team. he might give effort but he simply isn't good enough. for a defensive midfielder, he is very bad at defending.

« on: January 11, 2011, 10:12:06 PM »
what happened with adu is not uncommon. the best performers at age 14/15 aren't always the players to reach the highest level later in their career.

also didn't he start his pro career at dc united? you really expect him to reach the level of youth players who were playing at better clubs, training among better players and being developed by better coaches (probably)?

or maybe his drive/work ethic wasn't high enough to make him one of the worlds best. or maybe it just means that ripping at youth level doesn't translate into being able to rip senior professionals. the possibilities are plenty!

but the fact that he isn't one of the best players in the world now isn't surprising at all when you think about it.

I don't think that people (on this thread) were necessarily expecting him to be one of the best players in the world, but based on his hype, most figured he'd be having a comfortable professional career at a recognized team...as opposed to loaned out consistently and bouncing around in obscurity from team to team...

That said, he's still only 21...there is still a world of opportunity ahead of him if he can find a good run of form.

i just get the feeling that because at age 14 he was so much better than other 14 year olds, that we tend to expect him to be a top player at an older age. and i really don't think it works like that - that assumes that all other things are equal.

My only significant disagreement with you. Rosicky has not been effective this season and he definitely doesn't work as hard as Wilshire defensively. The ideal player for that position is Diaby, if he can get over his injury problems. Denilson is a good replacement when we need a little more defense. Rosicky is past his 'sell by' date.

I actually agree with the original comment that Rosicky might be a better option than Wilshere. I can't really comment on who's the better defender between between Rosicky and Wilshere, neither stands out to me as being particularly good in this department. Wilshere does seem a bit braver in his challenges though. That said, when in possession Rosicky is a much better player than Wilshere. He's better at keeping possession of the ball, he's more intelligent/experienced and is a better passer as well.

Agree with you on Diaby.

But I disagree with you on Denilson. I find that he offers very little defensively. He may hold his position but he's easily out-muscled by most EPL midfielders and often caught not tracking his man on opposition counter attacks.

Wilshire ... youth not bad but somehow I would prefer Rosicky instead the man does work hard and have vision and technique to burn..
Fabianski has done well I have to admit but I would prefer the other keeper but because they're so close together they will keep each other honest.

agree with this! would also like to see arsenal sign a DM, because denilson doesn't seem a good fit for the role. if song is injured we in trouble. my guess is that wenger won't sign one and wait on the return of frimpong.

but as you mentioned Vela, what is your opinion of him?

Djourou was injured most of last year and even this year when he got his chance he could not prove he deserve the spot through extended play because he got injured again. I think he and Vermelene are the two to lead Arsenal.

Outside the fact he is always injured,  I do not like VanP as a #9. When he played as a 10 for Arsenal I always felt his qualities were better utilized. Just a note when he was with Feyernood & even Holland and played wide he was deadly, yet I can't remember Arsenal ever trying him in that position. Imagine him playing to the right like Robben

despite the periods when he was injured, there were many games when squillaci and koscielny were making glaring mistakes and he would not get a run. he would play the odd carling cup game or come off the bench here and there when someone was injured or suspended. and the thing is he would do a decent job, but as soon as squillaci or koscielny were available again he was right back on the bench. now the situation seems more noticeable but djourou could have been getting a lot more of a run a lot earlier in the season. if anything, koscielny and squillaci were getting extended play and proving that they didn't deserve to be in the side.

and its not only this season. in seasons past wenger would play senderos ahead of djourou, and since then i thought djourou was getting the short end of the stick. cause senderos would make error after error and still get the nod of him. injuries aside, i feel like there's something about his game that wenger doesn't rate. and given wenger poor record of central defensive signings/selections over the years (cygan, stepanovs, luzny, senderos etc), i really question his ability to spot defensive talent and i wonder if djourou will be another matthew upson.

wrt to van persie. when he plays wide its not in the same mold as robben. he's not a runner like that. he's more similar to kuyt if anything. not in his personal style of course but in the sense that he plays a wide role that doesnt involve running at players and taking them on. his crossing is good. and when he plays on the right he can cut inside and shoot off the left. but you not likely to see him bombing down the line and ripping men.

Ent!  Quick question. What is your take on VanP?

favorite arsenal player. left foot like a canon. wish he wasn't so injury prone.

how did djourou look today? i feel like the defence is better with him in it but he gets a raw deal from wenger.

Arshavin must be the most frustrating player to play with. Dam! that man could give away the ball
Bendtner score! Yes! but seriously he scares no one.
Rosiky play way too deep in the second half and islolate Chamak.
Rosiky play 90 minutes and not one shot from your attacking midfielder???
Agree why change your Central pairing will be the big ???????

Wigan deserve a point from this game.

agreed...also we need a backup lb/lw...eboue was run ragged this game and offered little going forward

wenger has too much confidence in some of these players who aren't that good

lol yeah I does be lil scared too with Van Persie but something tell me he'll be ok Wenger does manage him well doh play him all the time but when he get back to the form he had last season is hell to pay ... I find he not shooting as much as he used to  and he ain't as mobile either.
I think if ManU plays the team we play against Chelsea ... different result ..... different men does bring different things to the team but we have none there who could pull the strings lie Cesc ...... including Nasri.
I hope they play Rosicky for Cesc they need his confidence up again but I've a sneaky feeling they gonna play Diaby also more than Likely they may start Chamakk or Bendtner and give Van Persie a rest since the games so close together they may also give Ebouie a start for Sagna.
I'd give the young goalie a game as well .... cuz yuh really want to share game time to your players and manage them well.

think there will be a lot of changes as well. wouldn't be surprised to see denilson and diaby in the middle and arshavin back in the side. the player who i think needs to stay in the lineup is djourou. i have no confidence in the koscielny/squillaci partnership

If Arsenal had to make three buys this January I would like to see them buy
Fernando Llorente (ST), Alou Diarra (DMF) and Manuel Neuer (GK)

or they could sign some u14 players from trinidad and develop them so we have a side for WC2018  ;D

Missed the game. Not feeling that bad about the score, to be honest. However when I watch the game later I will comment on their performance.

On another note, I'm happy to hear Szczesny played and performed well. Will continue to campaign for his inclusion in the starting line up. He and Djourou need to displace Fabianski and Koscielny (or Squillaci, not sure who's worse).

Wenger changed up the system today to accommodate Van Persie and Chamakk today but, if the most creative elements stuck on the wings that stifles creativity as it did today. A win is a win but this system won't work against manu!
Walcott looked hungry ... good!
Gibbs got injured .... again!
Rosicky might have been a better option  in the middle than Denilson!
We looked toothless!

Agreed 100% - I don't see what Denilson brings to the team that Rosicky can't.

Wenger used the system, not just today, but in the last few games that van Persie played. My guess is that it's the only way he sees he can accommodate both van Persie and Chamakh.

Bendtner should have been able to fill that role, but he tends to move around so much that when players are looking to serve up a cross, he's not in the box.

For me, the game against Braga (0-2 loss) was the clearest evidence that Chamakh is much better in the air than Bendtner/much better at playing in a direct style. Chamakh came on for Bendtner and immediately you saw a difference in terms of presence and headers won up top. I not sure why but think it has to do with aggression. I seen Bendtner score many goals with his head, but for some reason when he's contesting a long ball (with his back to goal) he doesn't attack the ball or time his headers as well. Bendtner also doesn't seem as willing to go into the aerial challenges.

Will be interesting to see how v. Persie, Chamakh and Fabregas fit into the lineup. Hoping they can all start. Drop Fabregas deeper to replace Wilshere/Denilson and leave v Persie in the hole behind Chamakh.

Football / Re: ARSENAL FOREVER
« on: December 08, 2010, 10:35:40 AM »
I think Chamakh is an important part of the team! He isn't going to take on players and isn't great running with the ball but he is (a) a threat in the air (b) someone who can hold up the ball (c) a hard worker. His effort to get onto everything wins the teams penalties even. And that different dimension has been very important for Arsenal in some game this season. I don't think he will necessarily be dropped if everyone was fit. Maybe that was the plan. But after his performances at the start of the season I think he's forced his way into the reckoning to continue holding down a starting spot. Cause there's no other striker on Arsenal's team that is doing what Chamakh does.

And I think Wenger is recognizing that. which is why we're seeing van Persie come on and play a deeper role, rather than replace Chamakh, in recent games. I feel like Wenger doesn't want to drop him and is now looking for a way to use both at the same time.

I disagree with the opinion that Chamakh is not that good because he doesn't have all the tools of a Drogba or Torres, cause sometimes being very good at your role is all that matters. In the same way there are different types of midfielders, there are different types of forwards. Saying he not that good cause he not as versatile, come like saying Makalele isn't all that good cause he doesn't have all the tools of a Xavi. The importance to me is his impact in the team. And from what I seeing he has a big one.

Kevon Neaves - Rips up the Super League week in, week out, scored 14-goals from midfield for his team T&TEC who seemingly have a wealth of talent in their team's arsenal. Neaves combines well and is surrounded by great talent such as Anthony Noreiga, Dwight Crichlow, Keeron Benito, Bevon Bass, Bevon Lewis and Sylvester Teesdale. This is surely a good recipe for success, hence the reason they are currently league leaders. Now if the powers that be would initiate a promotion/relegation system for the Super League/Pro League respectively- the former Köping FF and 2005 SSFL 'player of the year' Kevon Neaves would have gotten a chance to showcase his talent at a higher level and probably break into the T&T senior team. Neaves has one solitary cap for his country, when he made his debut under former T&T hero coach Leo Beenhakker, in a 2-0 victory over Iceland in 2006.

 ???

Or he could sign for a pro league team ...

Also, that we're basing someone's national team credentials on the fact that their tearing up the super league reflects a pretty sad state of affairs for our football.

Arshavin has been very good of late as well.

Been saying this for a while now - would like to see Djourou get a run in the team. Not that he is that good of a player, but Koscielny and Squillaci have looked shaky. Based on form he deserves at least a chance. He is also more athletic and better in the air than those guys which he displayed today, and he has done well in the premiership games that he's played this season.

That said, Arsenal is missing Vermaelen.

The other player I will campaign for in the starting line up is Szczesny but I doubt that happening any time soon.

To answer the question - Why is Fenwick so obsessed with coach Latapy?
Because Latapy is the national team coach and the man is a sports writer reporting on the national team! Duh  :P
Read the English press, and you would see the scrutiny coaches' performances receive. Fenwick not doing anything that commentators and writers around the world don't do everyday. And as Tallman said, the man's assessments are logical and make sense.

I find he playin like Makelele but jes a lil bit better in every department

I think he is one of the defensive midfield standouts in de EPL dis season

And he is jes 24 years old.

yea, he's good. when I saw him at the WC I said Wenger should try to get him. next thing I hear he's at Newcastle. surprised there weren't bigger clubs in for him, esp since he just came off a title winning season in the dutch league.

until the sport is no longer a "sport", but actual careers (well, treated like a profession by both the players and admin as well general public), we'll continue to have mediocre talent coming out of whatever we call our top league.

like it or not, our players are part time workers who are being asked to do full time work.

when it comes to careers, it's not only football suffering from a lack of professional attitude in T&T. if it had policeman or customer service "world cup" would be the same thing. unprofessional-ism rampant in T&T. the only thing is with sports you constantly competing and being compared with the rest of the world.

Why do we think that promotion and relegation is the (one of the) answer/s to our inability to develop proper players.

I think we missing it.

With Wigan taking their time to adapt under Martinez, Scotland was given little sympathy by supporters who perhaps unfairly saw him as out-of-his-depth.
