Trinidad-born soldier Kendell Frederick was killed in Iraq last month while trying to become an American citizen and yesterday, United States politicians introduced legislation in his name seeking to fast-track citizenship applications for foreign-born military personnel.
Frederick, 21, was granted his citizenship a week after he died.
An Associated Press report last night stated that the bill would be introduced by Senator Barbara Mikulski and Congressman Elijah Cummings.
The announcement was made during a news conference attended by Frederick's mother, Michelle Murphy, in Randallstown, Maryland.
Frederick was killed on October 19 by a roadside while travelling in a convoy on his way to a military base in Tikrit, Iraq.
His fingerprints were needed as part of the citizenship application process.
More than 2,000 soldiers have died in combat since Operation Iraqi Freedom began.
Senator Mikulski stated: "Every military death in Iraq is a tragedy, but this one did not need to happen. If you are willing to fight and die for America, you should be able to become an American."
Frederick, who lived at Trou Macaque, Laventille, was buried at the Arlington National Cemetery, Virginia, and posthumously awarded the Purple Heart.
The Kendell Frederick Citizenship Assistance Act will, among other things, require the Department of Homeland Security to set up a hotline to assist military personnel obtain their citizenship documents.
