Football / Re: 8 more games Sunderland!!
« on: March 22, 2008, 01:50:42 AM »

The critical games for Sunderland are
1) vs Bolton  on May 3, and 2) Fulham on Apr 5.   If they can win those two then they have a chance of staying up.   Both Birmingham and Reading have relatively easier schedules than Sunderland, and given that Birmingham has been playing well, it seems as though Birminham’s  chances of staying up are better than Sunderland.     Fulham’s schedule is also somewhat easier than Sunderland, and with Johnson starting to play well, and Mc Bride back, they might be able to surprise a lot people.

Cant see it personally. Fulham have 5 away games against 3 at home, they also play Sunderland Brum and Reading so not all can get all points.  99% of the time there is only 1 reason you are relegated and that is your not good enough, fans will complain about all those decisions etc, but if we are relegated it is down to being not good enough pure and simple.

Here one is for those that may want to watch it, after last week I haven't a clue what the team will be or what system they will play, but wins are what we need so lets hope RK just goes for it.

It remains to be seen how long Carlos plays tomorrow, as he had an hour against Chelsea and thats all he has played in 4 months.  Surely even T&T cant expect a full match out of him, I am praying he doesn't get injured aswell.

I find it really strange how many people on here have gone on how important this friendly is, yet seem convinved that it is a necessity to have Carlos there, when in reality he is not yet in a position to show his true potential due to the injury.  If the friendly is that important surely a fitter alternative would of been found.

As for the injury thing Sunderland aren't that type of club.

Interestly the club held an open training session at the stadium today, first team squad for tommorrow, however  no Kenwyn for whatever reason, strangely.

He hasn't a choice so he can't say anything else.  if he had the choice they wouldn't be coming its as simple as that.

It will be interesting given the circumstances to see  how long they both play for, especially Carlos.

They wont get a chance to train / see CE and KJ as it coincides with the friendly, shame but no doubt will see them saturday at the match, should be an experience for them 40 odd thousand crowd, quite noisy.

Wish the lads well, but it will feel cold to them especially with that wind off the North Sea, its not too warm this week.

KJ have the rightous man to learn from. Yorke can show him what to do in practice even if he is not playing next to him on the field.

True Trini HYMC

I know everything there is to know about top knotch fishing.

I see it with my own eyes from the best finisher that TnT ever had, Stern John.

Even when stern was 11 years old he was slow and used to fall down all the time, weaky weaky. but even in small goal with the big boys he knew where to stand up and how to pass the ball in the goal.
Them things you cannot teach
and them thing you cannot explain

you have to experience it.

Ask yourself if Jones was not build like a sprinter and had the leap of a high jump champion if he would be on the squad.

Then ask the same question about stern John.

He fast like a snail and have the work rate of  a sunday morning pri-modonna
but even at 31 going on 32 he still slotting them home.

Why?

You have to experience it.

I talking from experience.

Jones is not a good finisher so he is always going to struggle to get goals.

He has the zess, the fight and the physical attributes but when it comes time to put it in the net it does not come natural to him.

The fact is he spent most of his young  life as defense and midfield.
he needs to learn how to finish.

they should hire a finishing coach and if he work on it for the next 2 years or so he would eventually develop into a goal scoring forward.

Jones scoring between 10-15 goals in a season nothing more.

If he learn to finish this can bump up to 20-25 but it will take time and work.

The best thing suderland can do is buy a finisher and let jones done the busy work until he develops.

Like everything thing else it takes time.

Look at any of the games jones play for Trinidad Bahrain in Bahrain for example he had many chances could not hit the target.

if he could finish one of those 2 headers would be in the back of the net and Sunderland would be thinking he is a star.

With the right work Jones would be ready in 2 years, I hope keene and them willing to work with him.

for Trinidad sake as well.

Strange to say but he does has an awful lot to learn, running into/creating space, attacking dangerous areas front post back post., composure and finishing I am sure they are working on him, but also need a different range of passing to able him to learn those things.

Strangely enough sunderland did have a similar forward a few years back Marco, who was raw and fast, he was lucky enough to have Eric Gates beside him, who used to tell him where when to run, he was the making of him.

The present club chairman was a good forward and no doubt could teach KJ quite a bit, not being blessed with KJ spring or speed, but was better than him on the above areas.  The problem is it maybe seen as interfering with RK so I doubt it will happen.

He needs someone to play off him, with him that has natural movement and finishing, its the only real way he is going to learn.

If sunderland don't survive and a silly offer comes in, I wouldn't be that disapointed if the club takes it to be frank, something I probably wouldn't of said a couple of months ago.

Carlos staying clear of club v country row

Carlos Edwards is content to let others squabble over him in the club-versus-country row surrounding his call-up by Trinidad & Tobago.
Edwards – who returned from a broken leg by starting Saturday's loss to Chelsea – was named along with clubmate Kenwyne Jones in the T&T squad for a friendly with Jamaica on March 26.

If they go, the Sunderland pair would probably not return to Wearside until the eve of their club's Premier League home game against West Ham United on March 29.

Black Cats' boss Roy Keane does not want them to go, but T&T seem determined the duo should travel.

Edwards, who had been out since December 1, said: "There's not much I can do, to be honest, except sit tight and wait and see what happens.

"It's out of my hands.

"I'm employed by Sunderland, but the Trinidad & Tobago Football Federation want me to go there.

"To be fair to Sunderland, they are looking out for their well-being and my well-being because I haven't played competitive football for a while.

"I hope the T&T FF understand that.

"But I'm just going to sit tight and hopefully Sunderland and T&T will come to an agreement and we can all smile about it."

New T&T coach Francisco Maturana says it's important the Sunderland stars go to the Jamaican capital Kingston because the game is part of their country's preparations for 2010
World Cup qualifiers.

After Jones played in a midweek friendly against Guadeloupe last month, Keane floated the idea of hiring a private jet to bring his players back to England quicker.

And he said last week: "We'll have to speak to the T&T people because it is a friendly match and we have a very important match against West Ham a couple of days later.

"I can appreciate that the T&T manager wants to do well, but it's a friendly.

"And, as far as Carlos is concerned, he has hardly played this season so I think it's a bit unfair on him to pick him just yet.

"But if they have to go then arranging a jet is something we will definitely look at because that will make a big difference in terms of getting them back early.

"It'll be expensive but there are a few other British-based players who might be playing in the game and we might look to split the cost with other clubs."

The title will be done and dusted by the time the Arsenal game comes around, so will the relegation issue, I think.  Unless there is a massive change there is only 1 spot left Fulham have something like 6 away games to play.

Strange game today, was expecting the worst given the time but apart from first 20 minutes thought we did OK.

KJ should of scored he needs a "lucky" goal at the minute.

3 players missing today, Ricahrdson, Murphy & Chopra.  There is a rumour that they were up to no good so left out, there is also a rumour a virus kicking about so it depends what you want to believe.  Its strange no mention of their injuries though.

If they have been up to no good RK seems to be very consistant on these things  and doesn't take many prisoners, we well have to wait until it comes out which is probably tommorow or Monday.

1634
IMHO its a personality thing, I don't think anyone would say KJ is lazy but could say his closing down / pressure/ agression isn't what it should be.  All countries are different but there any many players quite well thought of that have got it down to a tee.  If you watch them in a game the first and last 5 minutes of each half they will do something some tackles etc and be quite well thought of, but the rest of the game they just disapear.  Perhaps a lesson for a few players on how to give the impression the fans / coaches want.

Like all fans if the players is fantastic scoring goals and winning you matches I would care if he spent 85 minutes on a deckchair with a drink reading the paper, but they are few and far between.

After the first couple RK kept quiet and didn't say anything, I made the comment I thought this was the wrong approach because the officials just know its an easy life for them against Sunderland.  As the season went on the decision have consistantly went against the club, no evening out at all.

As a fan you get angry at the decision at the time, but when you look at them commensense kicks in and usually you an see a reason why the official give it and its fair enough because everyone knows the official are going to make msitakes.  On some of those you can't, the offsides you have to blame the linesman not the referee.

It also doe you no good to consistantly whinge but if you look at the big 4 its everytime they get beat / draw.  There is a bias in the prem without doubt and RK does need to speak out about decision when the need arises.

Ethutu is still injured so wont be playing, which makes a mess of 451 because Whitehead will play.

451 is OK is you play it well, the goals have dried up because noone gets up to support Jones, I do think the 7-1 at Everton got to RK and he is struggling to shake it off.

The real issue is we need wins if he is not going to commit players forward we aren't going to score and if you don't score you don't win.  If we stay up I think aswell as a new players we need a new/ different coach.

To be fair, I don't think it does any favours to just take the decisions and not say anything, as the club obviously had a policy of at the start of the season.  I don't want to see him whinge every week but he needs to shout when they are plain wrong.

Keane lets rip: We don't seem to get decisions with any referees
Last updated at 21:58pm on 14th March 2008

Sunderland manager Roy Keane was in his usual fine form at his club's training ground this morning, venting his spleen on his chosen topic of the week in his pre-match press conference.

This week, it was Barclays Premier League referees on the receiving end of Keane's verbal attack, following previous rants on WAGs, the FAI, high-earning modern day stars and, just occasionally, his own players.

Keane is convinced that his team have been denied six points in their fight for survival and there is no doubt poor decisions from officials have gone against his side - who have not always played that well. They face Chelsea tomorrow and have yet to win a point against any of the top five.

But Sunderland drew at Derby and Aston Villa, where they were denied winning goals. They conceded a controversial penalty at Blackburn, after missing one themselves and that followed a last minute winner for Reading which failed to go over the line. Senior referees Rob Styles, Mike Riley, Steve Bennett and Steve Tanner were in charge.

Here is the full transcript of Keane's interview

"We are not getting the rub of the green against any club, not just the big four. Blackburn, Villa, Derby, Reading. I cannot sit here and say the big four have a monopoly over referees. We don't seem to get decisions with any referees.

"This week even the youth team had a good goal ruled out in the last minute (of the FA Youth Cup semi-final).

"I may ring Keith Hackett myself. I'll get his number off Gareth. (Southgate Boro manager)

"What is going on I haven't got a clue. I have not got a clue if it is revenge. I am not that paranoid yet but it worries me.

"Don't fall for this nonsense that things will even themselves out. There is no way anything can even themselves out for us. If you are talking about Liverpool it was the same referee who gives the same decision against Danny Higginbotham.

"I would love to say the big four get all the decisions but we have it against any club. I do get consolation when I saw the penalty against Boro the other night,. I thought 'thank God it doesn't just happen to us.' It was the same referee (as Villa v Sunderland). Mr Bennett., Work that one out.

"They went against us at Manchester United as well. I am not sure if they find it difficult to referee against the bigger clubs, but I look at the decisions we have had and the decisions have been honestly amazing, even ones where you go where has that come from?

"I can get my head round ones where it was 50-50, a bit close, but we have had decisions go against us that aren't even close and I am left going where has that come from?

"Villa last minute, we score Bennett disallows it. It was clearly a goal and no one was even appealing. Reading when it was over the line, surely you give the benefit of the doubt, but the guy gave it who was 50 yards away, other side of the keeper. These are vital incidents. Chopra's goal against Derby, we were told the benefit goes to the striker. He was onside anyway it was not even close and they disallowed it.

"The theory of things even themselves out. Sparky said it but I have abandoned that theory now at this stage of the season. I cannot remember one decision where we have thought we are a bit lucky with that one, none.

"I was watching the kids the other night in the Youth Cup and they had one disallowed in the last minute; nothing wrong with it and they disallow it. Everyone is left scratching their heads. It was not even a decision where you could look at it and get your head round it. Everyone is scratching their heads.

"Managers are under unbelievable pressure and I am not one to go and see referees every week, far from it, but like Gareth said the other night after the penalty went against them., that was unbelievable and these are vital vital massive decisions which have cost us six points.

"We had four thousand fans on the motorway that day. I went to see them because we knew at half-time the goal was fine.

"I said 'listen the goal was onside' and the referee said 'well Smartie told me at half-time that I got the call right'. I said 'excuse me, who is Smartie?' and he said 'oh it's John Smart from Sky'. I said 'he is dictating your decisions?' and he said 'he told me I got it right'.

"Then the assistant who gave it offside, said ;a Derby official said I got it right at half-time and why would he lie to me?' and I said 'may be so that when you went out in the second half you wouldn't even things up.'

"Trust me lads, the fourth official had the cheek to say 'I will watch it tonight on television and if I feel I have got it wrong, I will be upset'. I said well you won't be as upset as our supporters. There is no way he would be upset.

"On top of that the assessor is standing there listening to this and he rings me on the Tuesday night and says 'yeah, actually it was a goal. It wasn't even a close call'. What do we do? Say 'great. Crack open the champagne?'

"If the referee is being influenced by Smarties and the assistant by Derby officials, what chance have you got? I haven't got a clue if they have it in for me or the club. Ask Smartie.'

"Here is talk about this goal line technology, but I don't know I suppose it could help but having said that it is a great game the way it is. We were just hoping the referees would improve. You can't keep blaming referees for football results all the time but all we are asking for is fairness and this football club is not getting it.

"We are not getting the benefit of any sort of decision, trust me I have enough evidence to show that. I am very tempted to register an official complaint. I was watching Italian football the other week and found Juventus had written to their federation saying a lot of decisions had gone against them but what would happen if I did that do you think? If the FA ask me to go down there I could sit down with Keith Hackett and show him the evidence there has not even been a doubt about the decisions. That is nothing to do with bad luck that is about officials getting the decisions right.

"What would an official complaint be seen as? Sour grapes? What would change? If these referees are getting marked by the assessors, surely these are wrong decisions.

"Mr Bennett is apparently next in line to Keith Hackett. What is going to happen to him? Are they going to mark him down? Make him referee Altrincham next week? He did Middlesbrough the other night and made the same mistake, so Gareth is following up our conversation we had a couple of months ago. Will it make a difference? No chance.

"These young referees are coming through and basically they need to get experience, participate in big games, just like players but if the Bennetts of this world and others are getting it wrong, while top referees are speaking to Smarties at half-time. . .

"Gareth had his whinge the other night and rightly so. I had mine a few months ago but what has changed? Bennett is still refereeing in the Premier League and is still giving decisions. It is unbelievable. It is costing clubs dear.

"I referee games in training all the time, I have sent off loads and it's not easy, it's a hard job.

"A lot of people ask why don't they come and get interviewed after a game and I don't think that would be too bad. Even if they said 'yeah I got it wrong' that would be fine. But they don't. 'It is a natural reaction for supporters to say 'yeah he did get it wrong' instead of people venting their fury all week. As a manager we get it wrong, of course we do, players get it wrong, officials get it wrong.

"I am not here to crucify them or try and hang them but you are on about our situation and my situation at Sunderland and we have had so many decisions go against us it is unnatural.

"Some referees might enjoy television interviews too much, it could go the other way.

"What's his name? Jeff Winter from this area. Jesus. Can you imagine? You would not get me off the telly would you? It could go so much the other way they could believe they are celebrities. One or two have agents already, I think Rennie has. They've got agents, the lot."

A crazy rule brought in to stop all the diving wasting time, its the fouled player that has the disadvantaged.

As for the offside I think they should put it back the way it was except for very obvious not interfering with play, down injured etc.  The only difference rather than make it from the half way line just from the penalty box with a line across the pitch.  This wouldn't result in going back to negative football and help everybody know when is offside offside, because nobody knows now including, players, managers, fans or officials.

meh boy i ent understand what yuh trying to say.......offside from the penalty box. what kind ah football is that.. So now you say a player on de attacking team could just stand up by de penalty box and  wait fuh ah man to hit him ah ball...... this will only encourage defenders to stay back knowing that the offside mark in the penalty box or what every line u talking about. This will only leave huge gaps between the midfield and the defense "THINK ABOUT IT". That ent not type ah football..... Mr  just leave be people offside line at the half line fuh meh please.... That's what de game is about.

I can only speak for the UK but given the way the game is played now, there wouldn't be many if any teams letting a player mooch just outside the box, must have other duties to perform.  The game is / has changed since the rules have been changed.

As the offside rule stands now there isn't one, a player can stand next to the penalty box now and as long as he doesn't touch the ball, in the 1st phase anyway he is not offside.  To be frank as it stands now it would be better if they just scrapped the offside rule as it just causes confusion and a sense of unfairness amongst fans.

Carlos: Bring on Chelsea

Carlos Edwards came through his first game since December and declared: "I'm ready for Chelsea."
It's just the boost Sunderland need as they scrap for their lives in the Premier League.

The winger has managed only five league appearances this term after the early months of the season were ravaged by a hamstring injury before Edwards broke his leg against Derby on December 1.

But he looked confident and fit after 60 minutes of last night's 1-0 reserves win over Manchester United, and many in the crowd were wondering if his early withdrawal was a hint that boss Roy Keane will use him against Chelsea on Saturday.

Edwards said: "I don't now whether it was the plan to give me just an hour, but I was just happy to get a run-out.

"I've been looking forward for a long time to getting back playing again. I've had the odd setback along the way in my recovery when things weren't going right. It seemed to take a long time before I could get back in training and that was frustrating, but these things happen in football.

"It's just a shame that I have had two long-term injuries now this season. But all I can do is be positive and hope that they are behind me now.

"I'm hoping that I will be involved against Chelsea this weekend – I'll certainly be knocking on the gaffer's door telling him that I'm ready to play.

"But obviously, I realise that he has to pick the team that he thinks is right to try get three points against Chelsea.

"I'm fit now and hopefully I can play a part until the end of the season."

Edwards was such a key figure for Sunderland last season but Keane has been starved of his services.

The manager has waited patiently for his Trinidad & Tobago flier to regain fitness and the 29-year-old seemed totally confident.

He said: "It has been much more difficult to come back from the broken leg than from the hamstring injury I had earlier in the season.

"With the torn hamstring, you know that a tackle isn't going to have a bad effect on you. But with a broken leg it is different because you know that one badly-timed tackle or challenge from behind could do you damage.

"When you have that on your mind, you always worry about getting another knock on it and it takes a while to get over that fear. But I know that it has healed properly now so that isn't a problem.

"I felt I had plenty left in the tank when I came off.

"Perhaps the gaffer gave instructions to take me off after an hour because he wants to involve me on Saturday – I honestly don't know."

Well its good to hear lets hope he can have clean run until the end of the season

Edwards gets reserves go-ahead

By Nick Alexander

Carlos Edwards will make his long-awaited return from injury for Sunderland's reserves tonight.

The winger has not played a Premier League game since December 1 having been sidelined with a broken leg.

But after proving his fitness in training in the last week, the Trinidad and Tobago international is ready to make a comeback.

It has been a nightmare season for the 29-year-old who played a massive part in helping the Black Cats win promotion last season.

Hamstring and leg injuries have restricted him to just five appearances for Roy Keane's side this season.

If Edwards comes through tonight's game without any problems, he could enter into Keane's thought for Saturday's visit of Chelsea.

Marton Fulop, Liam Miller Stephen Wright, Jean-Yves M'voto, Ian Harte and Roy O'Donovan are also due to feature against Manchester United in Hetton (kick-off 7pm). O'Donovan himself is on his way back from injury.

Gary Neville, Tomasz Kuszczak and Danny Simpson are in United's squad for the game.

Simpson played 14 games for Sunderland during a loan period at the club last season - and never finished on the losing side.

Sunderland (from): Fulop, Carson, Brown, Wright, Pelter, M'voto, McShane, Harte, Edwards, Weir, J. Richardson, Miller, O'Donovan, Chandler, Dennehy, Cook.

It makes no difference what RK says, as someone pointed out to me on here, its an official date, so there is only one winner.   Walker seems to want to play the "I am" man with this one so let it be.

But anyone foolish enough to think there wont be any reprocussions is kidding themselves.  I doubt the club will release the players for anything but "officially sanctioned friendlies" here on in.

A little commonsense and all of this could of been avoided.

If they stay up, they need to spend heavily on a midfield. They competent everywhere else.

Your right

More like 3 defenders, 3 midfielders and a forward. ( and a coach)

I found the team selection and tactics "odd" yesterday and know RK is a rookie manager but I must admit he is seeing things in players I don't.

firstly your right its an international fixture date so the country has the call, my confusion arose due to I thought friendlys don't count, which is true if arranged on a one off basis.

I haven't got little regard for internationals I take them as it comes, but a "friendly" at this time of year given the clubs circumstances is absolutely crazy.  Kenwyn hasn't played well since the week before the last friendly.  Carlos has played 4 and a bit games all season and isn't yet fit.

You add that to the fact they miss the whole week and don't get back to late friday in our position the club just simply afford them away.  You can also say T & T show scant regard to the needs of the player and the club, booking economy standby flights is simply not on.  If the club has an obligation to release the players the country should have an obligation to return the players in a timely manner.  Now T & T can afford for the players to be treated like that but Sunderland  cant, so it will be Sunderland footing the bill for the flights.

Its debatable how critical it is for them to be at a friendly, but its vital they are in a proper state for the Saturaday.  As I said previously its not so much the game but which game comes after the friendly

Kev I agree with you fully with regards to the travel arrangements issue, you're right better arrangements should be made to have them return to Sunderland as quickly as possible and in the best possible state..

Neverthless thats beside the point.

You say a friendly at this time of the year is 'crazy' given Sunderland's circumstances, but yet I'm sure if there was an England international friendly on the same date and one of Sunderland's players was selected you'd probably be over the moon. And I'll also venture a guess that you'd see a whole lot more substance in the merit of that friendly in the grand picture of Capello's plans..

Fact of the matter is that when Keane signed the players, he knew exactly where they would have to go on international fixture dates and what challenges would be involved. I am of the opinion (as selfish as it may be) that we need to get our already retarded preparations into full gear, and the Jamaica friendly is a key part of this. Also, with a new coach and philosophy on board, its important to get Carlos on-board even if he doesn't feature in the actual game itself..

Like I said, I understand where you're coming from as a Sunderland fan but I hope you also understand where I'm coming from as a T&T fan...

To be frank, I really couldn't care less about the England national team, we have a lot of Irish internationals that no doubt will be picked.  The point is we don't miss them a full week and they probably wouldn't of been call up in similar circumstances to Carlos.

I probably expressed it badly but its not the dates crazy, its the situation the club is in that makes this friendly crazy.  I have also said if the fixtures were in reverse order it wouldn't be so bad. As pointed out by another poster some common sense should prevail.  The club have to release the players so thats the way it is and just get on with it.  No big deal.

I don't think it will really help anything having digs at eachother.  But RK was probably asked the question in the Press Conference and he answered it.  The last "joke" he made about T&T about swinning back was seen by some as "belittling" T&T when in fact it was a dig re the standby flights but that part had not been made public yet.  I suspect and it is just a suspicion but RK is far from happy no one from T&T have bothered to ring sunderland and ask about Carlos, this only comes to mind that he references "he will have to ring the coach"  which again to me smells that RK is having another dig at lack of orginisation / consideration.

It will be interesting to see if FIFA have any rules about the countrys obligations on travel arrangements return of players.
