Our side played like shit. I thought it was the many coaches that made them unbalanced but now after such a horrible display, its clear that trini today is better and I dont want to qualify like this.I don't want that goal.

perhaps I am being somewhat naive or caught up in the moment but I have a feeling football will continue to be on the up and up from now on.  The generation of footballers that was lost with the dissapointment of 89 will be countered by a highly motivated generation keen to emulate the likes of Dwight, Russel, Carlos, Stern, Whitley, and others, perhaps I am being optimistic, but I trust our darkest football days are over.....

Football / Head-2-Head: Bahrain hope for more of the same
« on: November 14, 2005, 06:34:55 PM »

by FIFAworldcup.com

Bahrain will be hoping that recent history can repeat itself in the second leg of their Germany 2006 qualifying play-off against Trinidad and Tobago on Wednesday.
Little over a month ago, they returned home with a 1-1 draw from their Asian Zone play-off first leg against Uzbekistan and completed the job with a goalless draw that sent them through on away goals. They would readily accept a repeat result in Manama in a match they should enter with some confidence after holding the Caribbean islanders 1-1 in Port of Spain.

Bahrain’s previous play-off experience and the fact they hold home advantage are certainly factors weighing in their favour but T&T are refusing to adopt the role of the victims. In the eyes of coach Leo Beenhakker and captain Dwight Yorke, the tie is far from over despite the difficulty of having to find holes in Bahrain's well-organised rearguard in the intimidating National Stadium in Manama.

Steady rise
As a tiny Arab nation with a population of just over 600,000, a first FIFA World Cup™ qualification would put the seal on Bahrain's impressive progress in recent years. Four years ago, in Asian qualifying for the finals in Korea/Japan, they also reached the final group stage and, then as now, finished in third place. It was during that campaign that they gained a reputation for shock victories, notably the 3-1 defeat of Iran in their last match that ended up costing their opponents qualification.

Of course, third place this time took Bahrain into the play-offs and their subsequent success against Uzbekistan provided a huge confidence boost to Luka Peruzovic's side, who now stand just one match away from making history. There is no shortage of ambition in Peruzovic's squad, but the coach will be calling on his more experienced players to calm the nerves of the younger squad members on an occasion which will test both teams' temperaments.
In this respect, the Belgian coach is fortunate to be able to count on a number of players from the team that impressed in qualifying four years ago. Among them, Mohamed Salmeen, Talal Yusuf, Hussain Ali and Abdulla Marzooq have all played key roles in the current campaign. They, like their Peruzovic, will know better than to take anything for granted, regardless of the slight advantage Saturday’s draw may have given them.

"There is still another game to play in Manama so we have to prepare well and keep our concentration throughout the 90 minutes," the coach said. In addition, Peruzovic is concerned about the possible effects of two 20-hour flights between Manama and Port of Spain on his travel-weary players. "We have to recover from the journey as soon as possible," he said.

Tactical prowess
Beenhakker and his charges will have been working overtime trying to work out a way of unlocking Bahrain's defence. Unlike other Arab teams, who generally depend on the individual skills of their star performers, Bahrain rely on team work and good organisation. This ideology was introduced by former coach Wolfgang Sidka, who placed importance on fitness and doing the basic things well. His successor, Srecko Juricic, continued the process, introducing what he termed "a European style rather than an Arab style".

Bahrain demonstrated these qualities in finishing third at the 2004 AFC Asian Cup and did so again during the first leg where they frustrated their rivals for long stretches. Indeed it took a wonder goal from Chris Birchall to finally break them down and restore Trinidadian hopes of a first FIFA World Cup finals place. Afterwards Beenhakker observed: "We knew right from the beginning that Bahrain were going to be tough opponents. We have three or four days to discover a way of overcoming them."
Overcoming them will not be easy although Beenhakker is confident his team "can play much better" than they managed on Saturday. Whether that would be enough to deny Bahrain on home soil, however, remains to be seen.

Football / Warriors made to feel at home

Trinidad and Tobago skipper Dwight Yorke and teammates were feeling at home from afar as they settled in at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Bahrain treated to meals, home cooked-style, compliment of local chef Cecil Wint.

Win, along with assistant Jeannette Douglas were hired by the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation to travel to Bahrain to prepare the meals for the team which was experiencing it’s first stay ever in the Asian country.

Since arriving here on Sunday night, the team has had little to worry about off the pitch and coach Leo Beenhakker has been fortunate to have all conditions in order for preparations ahead of Wednesday’s do or die 2006 World Cup qualification playoff with Bahrain from 12 midday T&T time.

The TTFF also ensured that payments following Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Bahrain were handed out to the players on time following the match and other incentives are also in place once a win comes through on Wednesday.

The team had a one hour recovery session at the Bahrain FA’s training pitch, a stone’s throw away from the Bahrain National Stadium on Monday morning from 9:30am on Monday.

Under warm conditions, nothing different from what the “Warriors” are accustomed to back home, trainer Zeph Nicholas led the work out while Leo Beenhakker also directed a short sprint session with Dwight Yorke and company before a ball possession exercise which was aimed at getting the players to work the ball around for longer periods.

“Keep the ball like you’ve never done it before,” Yorke yelled several times during the workout. “Just one final push guys, one final push is what we have got to do.”

“I think the mood has been getting better and obviously we know what’s at stake on Wednesday and the guys have accepted that they were disappointing in the last game. This is our chance to make it better and by doing so, claiming our place in the World Cup next year,” Yorke told TTFF Media.

The mood was a vibrant one but one could sense that the intensity of the match on Saturday and then the long flight had taken some toll on the players but it all appeared to be normal again as the session approached closing time.  Dennis Lawrence trained separately with Nicholas due to muscle tightness. Midfielder Aurtis Whitley had to spend the time recovering from an ankle blow but has been passed fit to resume training from Tuesday with the rest of the 21-man squad minus Anthony Wolfe who was left out of the traveling party.

Beenhakker then took over the warm down period by repeating the short stop sprints.

Following lunch, Beenhakker led a meeting with the players and words were passionately exchanged. Beenhakker did most of the talking, letting his players know that destiny was at their feet on Wednesday.

“This is what you dream of as a kid. And everything you have achieved or not achieved for the years gone comes down to this. And what you can achieve now makes up for what you have not achieved in the past,” Beenhakker said.

A second session, this time open to the media and witnessed by an enthusiastic bunch of traveling T&T supporters took place from 6pm and the pace increased as Beenhakker put his players into a game situation workout. The turn out by the fans, roughly over 100 hundred of them was the largest ever to witness the team train either home or away for the entire campaign so far.

Prior to Monday’s run of events, the “Warriors”  were a less stressful bunch by late Saturday night as they boarded the Air Tahiti charter flight out of Piarco International Airport on the way to Bahrain.

The 13-hour direct flight arrived in Bahrain at 11pm local time (4pm T&T time) and  the fans including FIFA Vice President Jack Warner, departed for a separate hotel while the team and the country’s President George Maxwell Richards took the short drive to the  Bahrain Crowne Plaza. From then until Monday, there was no real sign of that Bahrain would be hosting a major qualifying match this week.

Despite Saturday’s  1-1 result, several fans back home made it their duty to show appreciation to the “Warriors” from the time they left the Hasely Crawford Stadium and made it up Ariapita Avenue and on to Crowne Plaza where a contingent applauded them off the bus and through the lobby.

As the team bus headed up the priority bus route on the way to the Airport after leaving Port of Spain at midnight, fans on the roadside jumped and waved at the sight of their team.

Yorke and company got on to the flight, all seated in business class with some passionate fans behind them in economy including Warner. Only the country’s President and his contingent and TTFF President Oliver Camps sat in First Class.

The vibes on the entire flight, with maybe the exception of the player’s area due to them taking time out for a rest after the match, was exhilarating. But even later on, Yorke’s men got a piece of the ambience as they exchanged words with some of the fans including Warner and Richards.

They sang, danced in their seats and drank from their glasses with Spalksman Anil Roberts and Warner leading the crew in good spirits. His Excellency even took a walk down the aisle to join in the lime for a short while.

For those on board who may have been sweating, maybe even with a headache over the first leg result, the vibes on the plane must have turned their feelings around. Bahrain FA officials welcomed a still very much optimistic T&T contingent ahead of Wednesday’s return leg.

The team will have a final session at the National Stadium on Tuesday evening after what is expected to be an easy going day with the players being allowed to relax at the hotel.

Favorites again??

T&T were favorites in 1989.  They were certain that they would beat or at least draw with the U.S. which hasnt been in the World Cup since 40 years back then.  The U.S. beat the odds and knocked T&T out, and shattered their dreams of qualification.

Today are those dreams greater?  If yes, why?

Everyone in T&T are talking about stats and polls and being favorites.  WAKE UP!  On the pitch all that talk means nothing.  Bahrain did not come here to allow a Carribean team to beat them and knock them out.  Our players promised to make T&T take another taste from that cup they tasted in 1989.  They should be used to the taste by now.

I really wish people here would be more realistic so that conversations here can actually make sense, and reflect the true importance of the next 2 games.

Come in dumpalewie, we waiting

I feel that Trinidad will experience deja vu on the 16th by losing its chance to qualify to WC 2006.  It happened before and it could happen again.  Last time it was at home, this time it'll be away.  Was it only luck last time that T&T lost to the U.S. in 1989??  How is it possible 4 a team to want something so much and then lose inthe decisive moment?

Do T&T people want to go to the WC 2006 more than they wanted to go in 1989?  I don't think so.

Their is a huge psychological preasure on the team this time around and that won't play to T&T's advantage.  It will happen again.

Steups....

Carenage man, yes, you are right, could very well be higher for the factors you highlight.

Pointman, not sure if it does, I will do some checking to figure out.  All the same, the margin of error if we include these 3 factors would yield a number perhaps ~ 2x or 3x the above number.  When one considers that these are numbers for NY, one of the larger TT communities outside of TT, doubt that we could have 2.9 million nationals outside of TT.
