Violence erupts at London derby

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/8221451.stm

A man has been stabbed in the chest during violence involving "hundreds" of fans outside West Ham's Upton Park stadium during a game with Millwall.

Fights broke out at 1915 BST and were still raging more than an hour later. A 44-year-old man was stabbed in nearby Priory Road at about 2025 BST.

A fan told the BBC it was the worst hooliganism he had seen in 30 years.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "It looks like there has been some planned trouble from fans."

He added: "Hundreds of fans are estimated to be involved."

The stab victim is said to be in a stable condition.

Millwall fan
One pub reportedly had its windows broken by bricks during running battles across several streets up to half a mile from the stadium.

Five arrests have been confirmed, including one for affray and one for breaching a banning order.

British Transport Police said they heard reports of minor overcrowding at Upton Park Tube station.

BBC radio reporter Ben Jacobs, who is at the stadium, said he had heard a second person had been stabbed, although police said they had no confirmation of this.

Mr Jacobs also said Millwall fans will be kept inside the stadium for 30 minutes after the game.

Describing how the violence erupted, Mr Jacobs said: "The trouble broke out outside the Tube station about 600 yards from the ground.

"There were 500 to 1,000 riot police and Millwall fans managed to break through the divide.

"Bottles were thrown and bricks were as well."

He added: "There has been a bit of trouble inside the ground.

"There was a penalty shout and fans started gesturing and throwing small objects."

'Burly bald man'

Aaron Smith from Hemel Hempstead, who was at the game, said: "I saw one man cornered by at least a dozen Millwall fans before kick-off. Terrifying scenes."

Eyewitness Fergal O'Brien said: "I saw a West Ham fan getting punched in the face by a burly bald man who had a coin between his fists."

Another fan said: "I was in a throng walking up and a group of hooligans came for us.

"The police wanted to help but they were clearly afraid to use force. I am still shaking. I thought I was going to die."

Ben Newton, from Harrow, north London, said his father had been stretchered away after being hit with a dart to the head.

And a Millwall fan told the BBC: "It was like a war zone outside the stadium. There was fighting all round.

"I brought my kids with me tonight and they've seen some violence that is indescribable."

JASON SCOTLAND FOR FULHAM
Roy Hodgson ready to move for £2.5m Swansea striker

FULHAM boss Roy Hodgson is set to make a move for Swansea hitman Jason Scotland.

The former St Johnstone striker has been in top form for Swansea this season netting 24 goals - including two against Fulham in the FA Cup - and Hodgson has been keeping tabs on the Trinidad & Tobago front man since the sides met in February.

Swansea just missed out on a place in the Championship play-offs and could be tempted to cash in if the Cottagers offer £2.5million.

Hodgson spent £15m on strikers Andy Johnson and Bobby Zamora and despite guiding Fulham to a top-half finish in the Premiership the duo have scored just 14 goals between them this season.

The Londoners could face competition from Burnley boss Owen Coyle for the Trinidad ace.

Liverpool's Charles Itandje in Hillsborough shame
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/football/premier_league/liverpool/article6112547.ece

A Liverpool player's career at Anfield looks over after claims he behaved offensively during the Hillsborough memorial service on Wednesday.

Charles Itandje, the club's reserve goalkeeper, was reportedly caught by television cameras laughing and fooling around during the service to mark the 20th anniversary of the deaths of 96 Liverpool supporters at Hillsborough, according to the Liverpool Echo.

Outraged supporters have complained about Itandje’s behaviour on internet message boards and the club are understood to be livid with the 26-year-old after studying footage of the incident, with a view to taking disciplinary action.

Rafael Benitez is said to be disgusted by the goalkeeper's behaviour, which has been described as "wholly unacceptable" and club officials are reported to be exploring the maximum punishment they can impose on the player. He is unlikely to play for the club again.

Supporters claim Itandje was seen laughing and joking and simulating dance moves during the “Tragedy” song sung at the service. The rest of the Liverpool squad conducted themselves impeccably, as did members of the youth and reserve teams who were also present.

Itandje joined Liverpool on a free transfer in the summer of 2007. The former Lens player has only featured in seven first-team games since then with his last appearance coming in last season’s FA Cup defeat by Barnsley.

Dunga fears for AWOL Adriano
http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,12010_5150126,00.html

Brazil coach Dunga has expressed his concern over the whereabouts of Inter Milan striker Adriano.

The 27-year-old has spent the last 10 days with the Selecao where he was an unused substitute in the World Cup qualifying games against Ecuador and Peru.

The frontman was expected to report back to Inter last Friday but was not seen on his scheduled flight back from South America.

The former Parma ace has had a turbulent few years but Dunga insists that his charge was in good spirits when he left the international camp.

"I don't know where Adriano is. I am very worried for him," he told Tele Lombardia.

"He was very well while he was with us. He was calm and we worked intensively with him because he had some troubles in one ankle.

"He was not said or depressed but happy. He even sang and danced as he always does in the camp. I thought he was going back to Italy.

"We set up a return flight ticket for him as we did with the other players. Since then we know nothing about it.

"Now that rumours are going around, I am truly worried."

Footballer puts wind up referee
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/manchester/7984554.stm

The Chorlton Villa player got a yellow card for the noise which was classed as "ungentlemanly conduct".

The team, who conceded a goal on the second take, went on to win the match 6-4 against International Manchester FC at Turn Moss in Stretford, Manchester.

Villa manager Ian Treadwell said their conduct was "normally exemplary".

"One of our players 'broke wind' and only the referee heard it and he booked the player," he said.

"The other player had the penalty saved because it was a bad penalty; it was nothing to do with any noise. They were as shocked as we were as to why."

Mr Treadwell said he was waiting for the Football Association to contact them after it had received a report.

The Manchester Publicity league club faces total fines of £97 for three dismissals and two yellow card bookings from the game.

'Just hilarious'

Mr Treadwell said: "We are not a dirty team and we like to play football.

"While I won't condone the actions of the players, it is an emotive game and some of the players were sent off for entering into conversation with the referee.

"This has come at a bad time in the season as we don't have sponsor and we are looking for a new sponsor for next season."

Pauline Riley, secretary and treasurer of International Manchester FC, said both team were "very friendly".

"There's no animosity. It was just hilarious," she said.

The King of Pop has announced 50 shows in London between July 2009 and Feb 2010. All 50 shows go on sale today, and will sell out today...thats about 1 million tickets. The demand is incredible.

Despite all the negative media coverage over the years, and not putting out a successful album (by his standards) in over a decade, the fact is people still love Michael Jackson. IMO, noone else, dead or alive, could sell a million tickets in a few hours (apart from Obama, lol, but I talkin bout artists here)

Inevitably, there will be a world tour to follow.

If yuh could get tickets when he visiting your town, would you go?  :)

Police: Hair Weave Stops Bullet

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Police said a woman's tightly-woven hair weave saved her life.

Police were called to a Kansas City market at about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Arriving officers found the 20-year-old woman there. She told police she had pulled into the market and saw a man with whom she had recently ended an eight-month relation with inside a car, NewsChannel5 sister station KSHB-TV reported.

A second man came up to the woman’s window and told her that the ex-boyfriend still loved her, Kansas City police said.

The woman told the second man, "I don’t love him."

At that time, the victim heard gunshots and saw her ex-boyfriend walking toward the back of her car firing a handgun, police said.

The victim sped away in her vehicle as her back window shattered, police said.

She returned to the scene a moment later to witness both men leaving in their vehicle.

Officers found a bullet in the woman’s hair and said her tightly-woven weave stopped the bullet.

The victim was not harmed.

The ex-boyfriend and the second suspect were both taken into custody a short time later.

General Discussion / How Porsche/Germany f***ed the hedge funds
« on: October 29, 2008, 12:21:59 PM »
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/business/news/porsche-in-20bn-sting-976896.html

Porsche in $20bn 'sting'

The sports car giant Porsche has pulled off one of the greatest share killings on record in a coup that has left some of the world's largest hedge funds nursing combined losses that could total $20bn (£12.6bn).

The vast sum was won and lost in bets on the share price of Volkswagen. While Porsche has been building a secret 74 per cent stake in its rival, the hedge funds have been betting that the shares will fall. The shares soared by 400 per cent in two days, leaving Porsche with a huge profit and the hedge funds – some of which are based in London – with losses that could drive them into bankruptcy.

City traders were stunned by the audacity of Porsche's move, although there is no suggestion that it broke German law or trading regulations.

The sudden rise in Volkswagen's share price – from about €200 to more than €900 – was triggered by the announcement at the weekend of Porsche's share-buying. The hedge funds had short-sold the shares – in effect a bet that they would fall – and so were left huge losses by the rally.

The Volkswagen debacle is the latest blow for hedge funds. In the boom years, these investors made dramatic returns – often on behalf of pension funds – by taking huge bets on a variety of financial instruments. But they have been hit hard by the credit crunch, with markets moving against them and banks increasingly unwilling to lend them money. Analysts at Morgan Stanley, the investment bank, last week estimated the global hedge fund industry could lose as much as $500bn in the value of funds under management in the second half of this year, with Europe worst-hit because of its reliance on short-selling.

They thought they were on to a sure thing with Volkswagen, given the crisis in the global automotive industry. Last week, VW's shares tumbled by a third in two days, and hedge funds piled into short positions, expecting it to be the start of a longer-term collapse in the share price.

"Last week when VW came down 50 per cent some people thought it was going to crash," said one market participant. "Some funds just said, 'it'll go all the way now it has broken through so let's get in (with a short position).'"

But they had not counted on Porsche's dramatic intervention. The maker of the iconic 911 and other sports cars had last year built up a 35 per cent stake in VW, but said at the time it had no plan to buy a majority of the maker of Golf hatchbacks.

Then in March this year Porsche's supervisory board gave the go-ahead to raise its VW voting stake to more than 50 per cent and thus make the world's third-largest car maker its subsidiary. But the company denied reports that it was interested in more control, saying this "overlooks the realities in VW's shareholder structure," adding the probability of gaining control of 75 per cent was "extremely low". Hence the hedge funds' belief that VW shares would fall still further – and the stunned reaction to Sunday's announcement that Porsche controlled 74 per cent of VW's shares.

The secretive nature of Porsche's share buying has raised eyebrows, but the authorities in Germany seem untroubled by the car-maker's tactics.

German regulators said yesterday they were examining trades in VW shares, but not the role of Porsche.

"First of all we will check trades in shares of VW to find any points that refer to possible market manipulation or insider trading. We are looking at the whole process," said a spokeswoman for BaFin, Germany's financial markets regulator. "That is the first step. If we find points that might look like market manipulation or insider trading then we will launch a formal investigation."

"We vehemently reject the accusation of share-price manipulation," a spokesman for Porsche told Reuters, adding that the market seemed to have mixed up cause with effect. He said: "The ones responsible are those that speculated with huge sums of money on a falling Volkswagen share price."

Porsche, with Wendelin Wiedeking at the helm, added that it would push for control of the company.

The hedge fund industry has seen huge growth over the past few years, with many ambitious young entrepreneurs, including Nathan Rothschild, opting to enter the sector. It also poached many senior investment bankers and private equity executives, attracted by the high returns and pay, and relative freedom of working for what are normally small firms.

Hedge funds thought they could outperform traditional investors by using increasingly exotic ways of investing their money. They also presented themselves as slight rebels, different from the staid financial establishment, often opting to set themselves up in Mayfair, west London, rather than the City or Canary Wharf. There will be those in Germany who will relish the discomfort of the hedge funds. In 2004, a German politician, Franz Muenterfering, described private equity firms and hedge funds as "locusts".

Footballer arrested over assault

A Premier League footballer has been arrested over an alleged assault on a woman in Liverpool.

Police were called early on Sunday morning after reports a woman has been assaulted in a flat near Sefton Park.

South African international and Everton midfielder Steven Pienaar went to a police station voluntarily later that morning and was arrested.

A Merseyside Police spokeswoman said a 26-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of assault.

Broken toe

She said: "The man has been released on police bail pending further enquiries."

Pienaar was part of the South African squad in the 2002 World Cup and played for his country at the 2008 African Cup of Nations in Ghana.

In April his move to Everton was made permanent after he played for the club while on loan from Borussia Dortmund.

He is currently on a three-year deal until the summer of 2011, but is out of action while recovering from a broken toe.

Football / Mourinho at his best again

Question posed by journalist: "Do you think you can sell a product like football with the attitude of sending your vice coach to speak after a game?" (Mourinho had sent his assistant, Baresi, to a few press conferences)

Mourinho's response:

"If you want a clear example of this matter, let's talk about the Premiership, the number one product in this sense. Alex Ferguson is considered the world over as one of the best coaches in the history of football, and I think he is too. How many times does Sir Alex Ferguson not talk to the press? And how many times do we hear talk of lack of respect and all these negative adjectives that we heard the other day? In my brief career, I have sent a collaborator to talk to the press twenty-one times. Here, for the first time in these twenty-one times, there has been talk of lack of respect."

"I'll ask you a question. A coach who studied Italian for four or five hours a day for three months came to a new country for the first time and spoke with the country, the people, the fans and the journalists in their language, maybe not that well because sometimes I make mistakes. Do you think this is a lack of respect? And now Ranieri talks. Ranieri who during his five years in England had problems saying good day, good afternoon and good morning. And now Ranieri, who respected the English fans and journalists, comes to me and says these things." :rotfl:

"Giuseppe Baresi can't represent Inter? He can't represent his coach José Mourinho? The only person who can say this to me is president Moratti. If he tells me Baresi doesn't have the quality, the status, the image or the faith to represent the club, then I promise that I will be here in every meeting with the press. But it's the president who has to tell me this, not you or another journalist on TV, or another coach. Before coming here I prepared a document for the club. I wrote a profile of the collaborators I wanted. One of the things I wrote in that document, that both myself and the club have, were the reasons why I want with me a person with a certain profile who knows the history of the club. That person is Giuseppe Baresi, but it could have been Riccardo Ferri or Giuseppe Bergomi, or another man who is important for the history of the club, so I can have someone who represents me with dignity, class and status before the fans, other clubs and the press. The problem here is a different one: you had no respect for a person like Giuseppe Baresi. If you don't understand, I can do a drawing to explain it better to you."  :rotfl: :rotfl:

How the f**k did he get pregnant?

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/us_and_americas/article3628860.ece

From The TimesMarch 26, 2008

Thomas Beatie, a married man who used to be a woman, is pregnant with a baby girl
James Bone in New York
A married man who used to be a woman says that he is pregnant and will give birth to a baby girl in July.

“How does it feel to be a pregnant man? Incredible,” wrote Thomas Beatie, 34, from the Pacific North West of the United States, in the latest issue of the gay magazine The Advocate.

“Despite the fact that my belly is growing with a new life inside me, I am stable and confident being the man that I am.”

Mr Beatie was born female, named Tracy Lagondino, but had gender reassignment surgery and is now legally male and married to a woman.

He decided to carry a baby for his wife, Nancy, because she had a hysterectomy years ago. He was able to get pregnant because he kept his female organs when he switched genders.

“Sterilisation is not a requirement for sex reassignment, so I decided to have chest reconstruction and testosterone therapy but kept my reproductive rights,” he writes. “Wanting to have a biological child is neither a male nor female desire but a human desire.” The couple, who have been together for ten years, run a custom screenprinting business in Bend, Oregon, where neighbours do not know that Mr Beatie was once a woman.

“Our desire to work hard, buy our first home and start a family was nothing out of the ordinary. That is, until we decided that I would carry our child,” he wrote.

Before becoming pregnant, Mr Beatie stopped the testosterone injections he was receiving as part of his gender reassignment. “It had been roughly eight years since I had my last menstrual cycle so this wasn’t a decision that I took lightly. My body regulated itself after about four months and I didn’t have to take any exogenous oestrogen, progesterone or fertility drugs to aid my pregnancy,” he wrote.

The couple bought donor vials from a cryogenic sperm bank and, facing resistance and prejudice from doctors, resorted to home insemination. “Doctors have discriminated against us, turning us away due to their religious beliefs. Healthcare professionals have refused to call me by a male pronoun or recognise Nancy as my wife. Receptionists have laughed at us. Friends and family have been unsupportive; most of Nancy’s family doesn’t even know I’m transgender,” he said.

Mr Beatie’s first successful insemination ended in a life-threatening ectopic pregnancy with triplets that required surgery, resulting in the loss of all his embryos and his right Fallopian tube. “When my brother found out about my loss, he said, ‘It’s a good thing that happened. Who knows what kind of monster it would have been?’,” he wrote.

The second pregnancy resulted in a baby girl who is due to be born on July 3. “I will be my daughter’s father, and Nancy will be her mother. We will be a family,” he wrote.

Mr Beatie would not be the first transgender man to give birth, according to Lisa Masterson, an obstetrician at Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre in Los Angeles.

“A transgender man can be pregnant because he has the same organs as a woman,” Dr Masterson said on the ABC Good Morning America show.

Dr Masterson said, however, that transgendered men face special health risks resulting from their sex change. “It’s really important that he doesn’t take any testosterone early on in the pregnancy and later on,” she said. “That can cause male-type characteristics in the female baby.”

Some of the Beaties’ neighbours in Bend voiced scepticism about the pregnancy claim. One resident, Josh Love, told ABC: “I couldn’t say that he looks pregnant. I can stick my stomach out and almost make it look like that. I think it’s kind of bizarre. I don’t know if I believe it or not.”

The Advocate said it had confirmed the story with Mr Beatie’s doctor.

Adriano sent to Brazil to save career

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=482699&cc=5739

MILAN, Nov 16 (Reuters) - Inter Milan striker Adriano will attend a training camp in his native Brazil in a bid to regain full mental and physical fitness.

The 25-year-old, once the most feared striker in Serie A, has hardly featured for the last two seasons after battling alcohol and fitness problems.

'Adriano...will leave for Brazil where he will undergo several weeks of psychophysical training to regain peak physical condition,' said a statement on Inter's website.

'As agreed by the club, the player and his agent Gilmar Rinaldi, the Inter striker will train at a highly qualified centre in Sao Paolo.

'The common goal is to give the striker the possibility to undergo a period of specific individual training sessions. The period of training will conclude on January 1, 2008.'

Adriano was linked with a move away from the San Siro in the close season but refused to go out on loan despite interest from former club Parma and English club West Ham United.

The striker has since said he would be willing to go anywhere in the January transfer window with Italian media reports naming West Ham's Premier League rivals Arsenal and Manchester City as possible destinations.

I offer the following information because, as ironic as it might seem, I believe I'm qualified to help clean up the massive problem of doping in sports. There is rampant doping going on involving Olympic-calibre athletes RIGHT NOW and it can be stopped RIGHT NOW.

There will not be a genuine level playing field in Olympic sport until all top athletes around the world are subjected to the same number and type of drug tests.

Wada has developed strict rules and policies but it needs to take more direct action instead of delegating the testing responsibility to independent federations of small countries that may not be motivated to catch cheats.

As things stand, Wada is an agency that governs and oversees anti-doping federations around the world. My understanding is that Wada itself only conducts a couple of hundred doping tests per year on a worldwide basis. To be more effective it needs to be much more "hands on".

Doping is still rife in athletics for the sole reason that it is still too easy to beat the testers.

There were no positive drug tests at the recent track and field world championships in Osaka, Japan. I don't think anyone believes that more than 1,000 participants were all clean.

To give you an example, the IAAF (world athletics' governing body) requires an athlete to have a minimum of two "out of competition" drug tests each season in order to receive prize money.

But only about 25 of the more than 200 countries that participate in the summer Olympics have independent anti-doping federations. This means that the vast majority of countries that participate at the Olympics are unable to properly test their athletes.

In general, the top 100 track athletes in each event are subjected to random testing. However, the majority of these athletes are only tested twice a year out of competition.

What you have to understand, though, is that the athletes from the smaller/poorer countries (without anti-doping federations) are not tested at all while training on their home soil during the off season. The two mandated urine samples considered to be "out of competition" tests are simply collected between competitions while they are on the European track and field circuit.

In short, this means that when the athletes are at home from October to April each year they have a green light to use all the performance-enhancing drugs they want.

Another problem is the issue of "missed tests". At present, an athlete can miss two during an 18-month period without any sanctions. This should be reduced to one.

The second missed test, instead of the third, should be considered the same as a positive test. There should also be more transparency about who has missed tests and how many they have missed.

The US Anti-Doping Agency (Usada) does not provide specific information about missed tests by athletes. The IAAF does not provide any information about missed tests. Why not?

There is no transparency regarding missed tests by any anti-doping agency in the world. This needs to change. Athletes are using the two missed-tests rule to beat the system and this is not being disclosed by the anti-doping agencies.

Here is my prescription for reducing doping in sport:

Wada should routinely send representatives to test top athletes from countries that do not have their own independent anti-doping agencies, particularly during the off-season

The IAAF and Wada should target test the top 20 ranked athletes in each event and test them 10 times during the off season on their home soil instead of two times during the competitive season. The top 20 are the ones getting the lanes, winning the medals and making the money

Reduce the number of "missed tests" allowed from two to one, and publish the names of those who have missed tests
What would happen if these three changes were implemented? I believe that the top performances in each event would immediately decline.

Rather than inadequately testing the top 100 athletes in each event, those same resources can be used to properly test the top 20 athletes, which would significantly decrease the use of performance-enhancing drugs at the elite level of sport.

Will it happen? Over to you, Wada.
