Went down to Wembley yesterday...immense atmosphere created by the German fans and some great football as well. Amazing goal line clearance by Subotic, that was one of the most incredible things I have ever seen on a football pitch. Dortmund came out strong but Bayern recovered and deserved it in the end.

What happen was he went and party late and never show up for practice the next morning.
The club decide to take the hard line on this disciplinary issue and told him that was the final straw, better he find a next club.
It just so happen the finals was coming up and the management would not budge on the decision and so allow him to play the final.

I lived in Edinburgh at the time and remember the whole drama...McLeish didn't really have much choice...the picture in the paper had Latas in a car looking rel drunk, and he was subsequently charged for drunk driving...the media were saying how the manager had to do something to maintain respect...McLeish would have looked like a pushover if he didnt act. Apart from the drink driving charge, I think he had also broken the clubs rules which said no drinking 2 days before a game (another game, not the cup final)

Now the scene was that Latas was due to leave the club at the end of the season anyway whereas McLeish had every intention of staying...so I guess McLeish felt he did what he had to do...coupled with the fact that he would have known Celtic would have blown dem out anyway (they won the domestic treble that year, Henrik Larsson mash up everyting and everyone in his path)

Thorgan Hazard earns Belgium call up
Chelsea loan star Thorgan Hazard on top form for Belgian side Zulte-Waregem
http://www.givemefootball.com/346162-thorgan-hazard-earns-belgium-call-up

Chelsea loan star Thorgan Hazard has been on top form for Belgian side Zulte-Waregem this season as they stand on the cusp of their first ever league title.

Eden Hazard's brother joined Chelsea with slightly less fanfare last summer, and was immediately loaned to Zulte-Waregem.

His performances at the club have earned him a call up to the national team, and he demonstrated just what he can do earlier this week with an awesome performance in their 5-2 victory over Club Brugge.

The younger Hazard pulled the strings, bagging one and setting up two for his side.

And a win over Anderlecht this weekend - the final league fixture of the season - will see them secure their maiden title and Champions League qualification.

Dwight on Sky Sports this morning picking a team of the best 11 players he has ever played with:

Schmeichel
Irwin
McGrath
Stam
Gary Neville
Giggs
Scholes
Roy Keane
Beckham
LATAPY
Cole

He spent a lot of time talking about each of these players, but he reserved the highest praise for Latas...

"Somebody that I grew up with...if he was English or Brazilian people would have been talking about him for years and years....technically better than Scholesy, could go past people both left and right...just incredible, made football look very easy...unfortunately you guys never got to see him, but I played with him for 20 years and this guy was incredible, sensational"

So after yesterday's unification bout, we are now The Undisputed Champions of Europe until next weekend  :challenge:

Pre-game the atmosphere was mostly mellow (not really a surprise in Amsterdam). The game meant alot more to Benfica fans than Chelsea fans...Benfica were there to try and win their first European trophy in decades, Chelsea were basically there for the party.

At one point it looked as if it was all kicking off in the town center near where me and my pardna were liming. I couldnt see whether it was Chelsea v Benfica or just Chelsea imbeciles fighting one another. Anyway we decided to make a move down the road, just as a squad of Chelsea hard men came steaming in looking for a fight, quickly followed by some MASSIVE dutch police (some of them fellas look like robocop on steroids), followed by a herd of police horses, then even more police. Didn't hear any more about that fiasco, guess nothing came of it (edit - more about it here: http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/europa-league-final-chelsea-hooligans-1892194)

Anyway, onto the match. I eh go lie, we were pretty poor yesterday, Benfica were better. We looked tired and seemed to be conserving energy in the first half. David Luiz and Lampard were getting overrun in midfield and Ramires was useless out on the right wing. The only saving grace for us was the Benfica aren't that skillful and just couldn't make good use of their possession. Similar to last year's game at Stamford Bridge, they had a lot of the ball but didn't threaten anywhere near as much as they could have.

Second half we stepped it up a bit and that half was more competitive from a Chelsea perspective. Even so, I wasn't looking forward to extra time - several players were completely bun in the last 10 minutes, Benitez was determined not to sub anybody and as a spectacle the match was still pretty dry. So thank God for Ivanovic  ;D. That ball seemed to hang in the air for ever...we were behind that goal...watched the ball loop high across the six yard box...watched the keeper take a step and then stop as if the ball was going over...but then.... :wavetowel:

As every Chelsea hater has already said, the Europa League doesn't compare to Champions League and its true...for me yesterday's experience could never touch Munich. Amsterdam was fun but Munich was magical. But a trophy is a trophy and it was a great way to end the season  :beermug:

SAF just confirmed that Rooney asked for a transfer (which is why he didn't play).

He said Rooney asked for a transfer and needed time to think it over.

He also confirmed matter of factly that they aren't gonna let him go (so I guess thinking it over = salting on the sidelines) :rotfl:

Men like Scholes represent the ending of an era of one club careers, at least clubs that play in the upper tiers of professional football. Scholes, Carragher and then Giggs, dont recall anybody else of note.

In modern day football there are no loyalties, only contracts.

Chelsea - John Terry
Liverpool - Steven Gerrard

From day one up until now, Lampard has always been a class act.  Hopefully we could win a trophy on Wednesday and he could ride off into the sunset like Drogba.

Man U have set an example: you do not just let your most experienced players ride off into the sunset. You don't go from hero to zero overnight. He is currently the 6th highest goalscorer in the Prem this season and is more than capable of making a contribution next season.

Whoever gets this job:

1. hadda be someone Fergie respects
2. someone the Glazers like and feel dey could wuk wid
3. hadda be able to immediately command and capture the attention of the players
4. hadda be able to master the structural components and considerations of Man U's set up (inclusive of $ ... not just this youth player talk)
5. hadda be not offensive to the terraces and Man U's global brand
6. doh have a steep learning curve in the EPL
7. Capable of achieving Champions League qualification (which likely favours someone who has demonstrated this competency in the past)
8. Come recommended by Fergie
9. can geh de wuk done without being unduly concerned about Fergie still being bout de place
10. going to take de job with a view to being in the role for longer than is typical of the EPL (has shown that sort of tenacity)
11. what else?

Based on this criteria, it looking like its a toss up between David Moyes and Howard Webb

Sir Alex Ferguson's future as Manchester United manager in doubt
http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2013/may/07/sir-alex-ferguson-manchester-united
• Announcement expected soon from Old Trafford
• Players told to prepare for news shortly

Sir Alex Ferguson's future as Manchester United manager was shrouded in doubt on Tuesday evening, with sources claiming that there would be a statement about his position and that the squad had been told to expect an announcement.

Some of the United squad were at a golf day on Tuesday at Dunham Massey, where they played against members of the coaching staff and were told to prepare to receive news regarding their manager.

United's press department could not be reached to confirm or deny the story.

Since leading United to a 20th championship and the 13th of his 27-year reign at the club, the 71-year-old has offered no hint that he may end his tenure. Yet given that since he announced his retirement at the end of the 2001-2 season months ahead of the close of that campaign before performing a U-turn, Ferguson vowed to make any future decision at short notice.

United had earlier confirmed reports that Ferguson is booked in for hip surgery immediately after the club return from their three-week pre-season tour at the end of July. That Ferguson will have his summer break and then travel to Thailand, Australia, Japan and Hong Kong before the operation suggested he was not going to be on the sidelines for too long.

However, United must face either Manchester City or Wigan in the Community Shield at Wembley on 11 August, with their title defence due to begin the following weekend.

Northampton's giant striker Adebayo Akinfenwa makes critics eat their words with first hat-trick
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/northampton-town/9671884/Northamptons-giant-striker-Adebayo-Akinfenwa-makes-critics-eat-their-words-with-first-hat-trick.html

Akinfenwa, a cult figure at the Cobblers due to the size of his shorts as well as his goal tally, is no stranger to chants about his weight. But the London-born striker says the terrace jeers are a motivating factor.

"Their fans were giving me some stick a couple of minutes before my first goal so it was nice to shut them up a little bit,” he told the Northampton Chronicle.

“It’s a beautiful thing. I want them to talk when they need to talk. I know it’s pure banter and part and parcel of football. When they do that, I generally score so they need to keep doing it so I can keep scoring goals.

“If I was playing a game and they weren’t doing it I would think something was strange so they can do what they’ve got to do and I’ll do what I’ve got to do.”

Nicknamed The Beast, Akinfenwa admits: “I eat loads — but I’m not a McDonald’s or fast food guy. But I think I should have shares in Nandos because I live there so much.

“The day the fans stop singing my name I must be doing something wrong. I try to play with a smile.”

Akinfenwa's fame has already spread beyond Northampton fans. He is the CEO of HAHA! clothing range, and the star of its popular '2 big 2 play football' T-shirts, which retail for £20. He even has a slogan, something he calls 'Beast Mode'.

“Beast Mode is trying to be the best you can and hit it hard. A lawyer, a chef, going to school — anybody can be in beast mode," explains Akinfenwa, who has now scored 10 goals this season for Northampton, who are 12th in League Two.

Jose Mourinho will decide on Real Madrid future at end of season

Jose Mourinho will make a decision on his Real Madrid future at the end of the season, with a return to the Premier League firmly on the cards.

The former Chelsea manager has been strongly linked with a return to Stamford Bridge, with interim manager Rafa Benitez set to depart when his short-term contract expires in the summer.

Mourinho was speaking after Real's UEFA Champions League semi-final elimination at the hands of Borussia Dortmund, where a 2-0 second leg success was not enough to prevent a 4-3 aggregate defeat.

The Portuguese coach said: "I know in England I am loved. I am loved by the fans, I am loved by the media, they treat me in a fair way, criticising me and giving me credit when I deserve it.

"I know I am loved by some clubs, especially one.

"In Spain the situation is a bit different because some people hate me.

"I didn't make a decision because I have a contract, but more than the contract, the respect I have for the club and the president.

"I want to finish the season, I want to try to win the (Copa del Rey) final, I want to try to finish second (in La Liga) and at the end of the season I will sit with Florentino Perez, my president, my friend, and decide the best for me.

"It is difficult to make a decision because I like the club, I like the president, we made a fantastic team that is ready to make big things, so it is hard.

"I need to honest and fair. At the end of the season I will speak."
