Football / Re: Who will win the FIFA World Cup?
« on: February 20, 2006, 06:08:35 AM »
I was talking to a Czech guy in a bar in Dublin and he was very confident about the Czech republic’s chances, they may be a team worth watching.

Germany are always dangerous, especially on their own turf and who would write off Brazil? Holland have a very good squad, but they all hate each other.

However, I have a very strong feeling that Peter Crouch will score the winning goal for England, against Germany, in the final.

if the warriors will be in England at the time, then it would be bad manners not to invite the TTFF along to the game and vice versa?

I see no conspiracy here, but if you could spare a few thousand tickets I know this guy.................... ;D ;D

Football / Re: ENGLAND JOB IS 'O'NEILL'S TO TURN DOWN'
« on: February 16, 2006, 06:29:55 AM »
I stand corrected.......unless he's Catholic.

I work with someone from Belfast and calling him a Brit is license for licks ;D.

O'Neil is Catholic, which is why he considered the Celtic job as the biggest in Football. It also means it could be a big issue for him to manage England (Big issue with some of the biggots we still have in NI, but probably not him personally)

I would love him to be the next England Manager, but I believe the next time we see Martin O'Neill manage a team it will be Man United.

the lunch time news in teh UK is that Shearer has said he doesn't want to go into management yet and Roeder has said he doesn;t want the job long term.

The bookies reckon Martin O'Niel and Sven are the front runners.

During the Mexico world cup, I remember watching Maradonna come out of his teams hotel (after his amazing performance against England) to a crowd of reporters.

The BBC had sent Bobby Charlton to try and interview him, Maradonna saw him and pushed all the other reporters out of the way, it was obvious that Charlton was a hero of his. That says a lot to me.

I think this could be one of Englands big advantages.

Everyone is going to worry about Rooney and Lampard, but it is a bad move by any team to ignore Michael Owen. With all the attention Rooney is going to get, it may leave a lot of space for Owen to exploit.

Or, we may just underperform as usual ;D

Football / Re: Whitley back home from Portsmouth trial.
« on: January 31, 2006, 06:46:14 AM »
I’ve been trying to find out what happened but no one seems to know how the trial went.

We have bought 9 players in this January, including Sean Davis, Pedro Mendes, Wayne Routledge, some Croation international and D’Allesandro all in midfield. Add to this Gary O’Neil (England u21 international) and Matty Taylor (ex England u21 player).

If Artus can’t get into the squad with that as our main choice of midfielders, it is no insult to him.

Football / Re: Uniformed British bobbies to patrol World Cup
« on: January 30, 2006, 05:14:51 AM »
I went to Holland a few years back to see England. In the afternoon before the game, there were literally thousands of England fans in a large square in central Amsterdam. At was all happy with a lot of beer flowing and a lot of singing. We started to notice that at the main entrance to the square, hundreds of Dutch riot police were forming. The Police then instructed all the bar owners to close, which pissed off most people. I could see it was going to turn nasty so I basically got out of the way. But a few guys were trying to get served in the bar, the bar owner was telling them they were closed, an argument started and the next thing is there was tear gas everywhere.

I’m not saying the England fans were blameless, but it was a really bad bit of policing. If the police hadn’t turned up there would have been no trouble. This was the way the British Police handled Euro 96 and there was not one piece of violence. They kept the policing low key and yet still present, but without the heavy handed approach of our European cousins.

In France 96, around 2000 England fans were watching the Scotland Brazil game on a big screen on the beach in Monaco. About 500 Moroccan fans started throwing empty beer bottles at the England fans, many of whom were families, and the French police stood by and did nothing. It wasn’t until the England fans took it into their own hands that the police waded in with batons and tear gas!!

Sure, there are a lot of fans that travel with England who are scum and those of us that are peaceful fans will do what we can to root them out, however there will be a lot of England fans there, therefore a lot of scum will also get through as well. Hopefully, the British police will help keep the peace and we will have a good world cup.

By the way, if you want to steer clear of trouble, it’s not just the England fans. The Turks, the Croations, the Germans and the Dutch all have their element of nutters.

Theyu beat us 2-1, but it's hard to play against 12 men, especially when one of then is teh Ref!!

That was an outrageous penalty decision, from a very very poor referee.

Liverpool are lucky to go through.

On the one hand, we have a member of the Commonwealth, with a fairly small population, most of whom are unemployed layabouts living off welfare and take out food. Their main industries are Oil and farming, but both of these are in decline. They have had no success in the international arena in any of the sports they play and have been humiliated by Italy Rugby and the Faroe Islands in Football. It is also a very grey and very cold country, even in July.

On the other hand, there is Trinidad and Tobago, home of the Mighty Soca Warriors who have qualified for the World Cup and will hopefully qualify for the knock out stage at their first attempt, something the other country has never managed to do. A land of plenty, with Oil, Gas, Outstanding nature reserves and golden beaches.

Personally, I don’t blame the Scots for supporting Trinidad and Tobago, takes their mind off their own problems!!

Football / Re: Biggest upset in world Cup history involved England
« on: January 10, 2006, 12:19:33 PM »
The Engliand football team is still credited with suffering the bggest upset in World Cup history. After refusing to participate in the earliest Wcrld Cup competitions because " the tournament was beneath them " England entered in the first one staged after the war in 1950 and fell to the lowly USA. The minnows USA made up largely of immigrants scored through a haitian immigrant named grosjean and won by a margin of 1-0.
What follows next will certainly remain in the annals of football as the english press at home published a score of England 10 Usa 1. It was more plausible than the 1-0 to the USA which came through on the wire. There must ave been a mistake ! So the press inserted the missing 1 before the zero and credited England with the victory. That sort of thing is impossible today, where live coverage is possble,  and so remains a part of world Cup history that England wants to put behind them.
If Trinidad and tobago produces a victory or even a draw against England that might rival the greatest upset. Is it possible ?..it has happened before ....

this sort of thing happens once eveyr 50 years so you never know....

world football is a lot closer than it was then. If you beat us, it may be a major shock, and a draw would probably just be recorded as a very good result for T&T, but I don't think now it would rival the result against USA.

I'm sure that it woud make no difference to the party you guys will have though if you do pull off a result. :)

Not just a class keeper but a Class Act

Top Man.

Englands third choice keeper stretchered off in that game.

just a correction pompy, dundee is in the scottish 1st divison, not de premier league.

Excellent pt JDB, i never looked at it like dat!!

In fact, Jack is going to be our 3rd choice keeper, so in essence, Ince, Warner and Shaka are fighting for 2 spots.

and when u think that Shaka ent going and get drop, then u realise that the third spot is going to either Ince or 'warner!!

ah love it!!

my mistake.

But I think it would be wise to take Shaka, just because of the experience he has, but then, I am a big Shaka fan.

Football / Re: England Friendlies confirm
« on: January 10, 2006, 06:10:53 AM »
Nothing against Jamaica, but I doh think T&T and Jamaica have similar styles. That was too much of ah generalization.

allyah men have to get real. there are no two teams whose style are exactly identiical...for England they feel JA is close enough AND THEY ARE RIGHT. Saying JA doh play liike TnT is like saying we doh talk alike. To us, a Trini and a Jamaican have completely different accents and dialect..but to an outsider there are enough similarities that the average yankee or englishman will hear a Trini accent and ask if you from JA....and if they can discern the difference they still recogiize our dialects ad accents as being from the cariibbean...we feel they are just ignorant foreigners, but the truth is there are broad simiilaritiess......they are there. Why it is everyone feel we should play Wales, or Scotland to prepare for England. I will guarantee you that the Welsh and the Scots and the Brits do NOT feel there styles of play are anything alike. who generalizing now? Yet we feel that  is such brilliant preparation and Eriksson is ah idiot?

I doh recall anybody linking us playing Wales, Scotland, Hungary or Czech Republic as ah preparation fuh England. I doh think there is much common among those teams at all.
All ah sayin is dat how Erikkson could say we and Jamaica have similar styles, when he say two days after de draw dat he don't know much about T&T? That shows ah reflection of some English mentality (not all!) toward us, even in North America...as far as dey concern, we does pong Reggae music and eat ox-tail soup, we eh no different from de rest of de Caribbean. Steups.

ain't you like Jamaica with Steel bands and Oil? ;D

T&T ain't going to worry Sven too much because if our players go out and play as well as they should, then England should win. It is Beenie who will be studying England to look for weaknesses. I'm not saying Sven will not be worried about you, but I am sure he will be more worried about Brazil, France and Germany as England should be up there as a real contender. before I get shot down, I watched Burton versus Man United on Sinday and I know the big boys need to watch out and not be over confident. I also know all the warriors will be fired up for every game, especially the England one, so we can not rest on our laurels.

I'm surprised there are no friendlies arranged over here for the warriors yet. I would have thought Wales, Ireland or Scotland would have been ideal opposition as a warm up for the WC.

Football / Re: Tony Warner is a Soca Warrior
« on: January 10, 2006, 04:52:31 AM »
It sounds like this is a position that T&T have a nice problem with, for what it’s worth, here’s my thoughts on the matter.

Shaka is immense, both as a player and as a man. Since he left Pompey I have not been that confident with any of the Keepers we have bought in, I would rather have him in the squad than Sander Westerveld which I think says it all about the man. If you have a better number one than him, you have a better keeper than over half the other teams in the world cup.

Warner looks good and has played well as cover and fully justifies Fulham signing him on a permanent deal. The signing of Niemi will make him 2nd choice keeper at best, but being kept out of the team by Niemi is no insult, he is a class keeper, now he is back in the premiership, he is probably one of the top 5 keepers in England (Remembering that two of those five play for Chelsea).

Ince is not playing for Coventry at the moment, so it doesn’t look too good for him. Remember there is a massive gap between the premiership and the Championship, if Ince can’t get into a struggling Coventry side, then I would question if he is the man for the job.

Jack sounds like a good keeper, I know Dundee were pretty pissed that he didn’t return from your game against Bahrain in time, but again the SPL is not that great a league, however, he does seem to have more first team football under his belt than Ince

So for me, it sounds like Ince will be the one to miss out.

Football / Re: Would Yorke at his peak make Chelsea's team?
« on: January 06, 2006, 11:49:52 AM »
Solely on playing ability Yorke would make the Chelsea squad. However if Mourihnio was to consider his off the field lifestyle and the stuff that comes along with it, I'm not sure 'The Special One' would have brought him in.

All Chelsea players have to be in their own beds by 2am or midnight if they have training the next day. Mind you, Dwights problem was never getting to bed early, it was just a case of how many were in there with him!

But yeah, he was good enough.

I shook his hand at a pre season friendly once when he was at Villa. Real nice guy. He took time to talk to the kids in the family stand as well (Every time the ball went out of play he came over and was signing autographs etc). It was Stan Collymore's first game for Villa and Dwight made him look average.

Football / Re: Racism in football: FIFA demands file on Di Canio case
« on: January 04, 2006, 08:20:40 AM »
on 20 December 2005, FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter announced a stricter and more unified procedure against racism and discrimination.

so does that mean the next time the Spanish fans taunt our black players and their manager makes disgusting remarks about frances top player FIFA will act.

Maybe next time they will get a 50euro fine and be told to stand in the corner for half an hour. No chance of them being banned from a major competition which is what should have happened.

Football / Re: Aurtis Whitley gets New Year trial in England.
« on: January 03, 2006, 09:04:44 AM »
If a player is refused an automatic work permit, then the club can appeal and each case is reviewed on it's own merits.

For example, if a player is young and has only just broken into the national team. The National teams world ranking is also taken into consideration, but my guess is that Aurtis will have no problem.

I have been trying to find out if there is any news on the trial, have any of you heard anything?

Football / Re: Portsmouth on verge of takeover - Redknapp safe
« on: January 03, 2006, 04:46:09 AM »
There are a lot of mixed emotions on this. We desperately need money to develop the ground, the youth academy and also to retain our premiership status, but are we in danger of selling our soul to achieve this?

The passion of our fans is what makes our club great, will it be the same when the Gucci brigade come to our club because we are “Fashionable”. Who knows?

There is a lot of talk about this guy. He has a lot of money but it is not his father, Arcady, who is buying into the club. Arcady is a billionaire, Sacha (as he is known) only has a few hundred million! Poor man ;D

You get this when you watch Ireland play. half the players don't know the national anthem, which is sung in Gaelic.

btw, Owen Hargreaves first visit to England was when he was called up to the England squad, so it happens all over.

I'm from just outside of London (That's in England if any Americans are reading this) and I found this site whilst looking for Aurtis Whitley on google.

I'm a Portsmouth fan through and through or as they say, Pompey til I die.

Been to Tobago, but apart from a few hours at the airport, never been to Trini. Loved Tobago, stayed in Crown Point the first itme and spent a week diving and liming with some of the coolest guys I've ever met.  :beermug:

Good luck in the world cup guys, enjoy the experience.

England should win, but you never know. Our primadonna players often let themselves down and the Socawarriors will be really fired up for the game.

Congratulations on qualifying, hope you qualify for the knock out stage and achieve more than Scotland ever have at your first attempt

I heard the rumour about Aurtis and googled his name, this is where I ended up.

I take it he is a midfielder and from the comments I've read on this board, he seems a very popular player. Lets hope it works out well for him.

Good luck in the world cup. Really good to see T&T get there. Never been to Trini, but limed in Tobago a coupled of times. Love it.
