AG going after Facebook posts

Published: Sun, 2011-08-28 20:24
Gail Alexander

A Facebook video involving death threats against Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has been sent to the Police Commissioner for action, Attorney General Anand Ramlogan said yesterday. Speaking at yesterday’s daily media briefing by security chiefs at the National Security Ministry, Ramlogan said he had seen the video and it was a matter of grave concern. Ramlogan said the video was immediately turned over to  CoP Dwayne Gibbs. Ramlogan said he had noted a number of Facebook videos and postings which border on incitement, had obscene language and in some cases were abusive to security forces. Ramlogan noted one video with a female of about 14 or 15 years old, whom he said made profane comments. He said such types of videos would not be tolerated.

While freedom of expression was permitted in a state of emergency, Ramlogan said inciting and use of vulgar, abusive and obscene language was not permitted. Ramlogan said the Government had agencies examining the various social media sites to see if what is being put up was within the law. If it is not, it will be passed to the Police Commissioner for action, he added. National Security Minister John Sandy said if the law had been broken where the  Facebook video of the female was concerned, the Police Commissioner would  “take appropriate steps.” On the other side of the coin, the social media may be used to assist current security operations.

Admitting that a sore point in the security exercise was the gathering of community-based intelligence, Ramlogan said the Government was thinking of using Facebook to obtain information via virtual command centre. He warned that people submitting false information could be charged with wasting police time and false leads on such a forum could be traced via the IP address. National Security Minister John Sandy said  emergency vehicles like ambulances were available to  transport the ill to hospitals or nursing homes. If people were  going on their own to such places, he advised that the police station be notified.

Football / Re: Is Lasana Liburd a journalist or a pen with a vendetta?
« on: August 03, 2010, 03:14:24 PM »
To me this
Can anyone honestly answer the question?

To me questions like this show that there isn't a problem with Lasana, but a problem with the rest of the media in Trinindad and Tobago. In many other countries the story of Jack Warners questionable business pratices would be huge news and every media outlet would fight for the chance to link such a high profile government official to irregularities but it seems that only Lasana is interested in this story, from the others you barely hear a peep. This then looks like only one reporter with a personal mission is writing about Jack but if there is a story out there the question should be why are the other so call investigative reporters not writing about it.

The first day that World Cup tickets went on sale in 2005, a friend and I were at the concacaf offices as soon as they opened hoping to purchase tickets, we were then directed to the LOC office above Simpauls where the office staff told us about the Simpauls package that was the only way to get tickets, this of course is the infamous 'Take it or leave it' package. As they were explaining this package to me Mr Warner walked into the office and could clearly hear everything that was going on. Knowing that FIFA rules clearly stated that World Cup tickets couldn't be sold exclusively as part of a package i refused their offer and immediately sent emails to every Newspaper in T&T and every sport reporting website I could find. I got three responses that day; playthegame.org, the gaurdian in the UK and a phone call from Lasana Liburd.

Because of the lack of investigative journalism in T&T, as the only reporter who was breaking the story about him, Jack Warner then proceeded to create the confrontation with Lasana. He took the fact that a reporter was looking into his business and writing about it personally and then after a confrontation at a press conference, if i recall correctly, proceeded to pull Lasana press credentials from covering the 2006 WC. IMO, this is not a case of a 'pen with a vendetta' but a case of one of the only journalist doing his job and reporting on a subject who continues to create new under-exposed stories while relying on the curious habit of T&T reporters of forgeting anything that didn't happen in the last two months.

Patriot... thanks for the thorough report, I don't know if you were taking notes or if your memory juss that good but I really appreciate the level of detail yuh provide.

As a former Holy Cross man myself I have always been partial to Kelvin Jack... but pardna, between this press conference today and the fortright answers you gave Flex in his interview, I have an immense amount of respect for you and the uncompromising stance you have taken on this and other matters (suit against your former agent, Mike Berry for one).  I like the brand of leadership that you, Sancho and even Shaka in absentia are providing and God-willing the younger players will stand up and take note.  It must start somewhere.

Nice to hear that Kevin Harrison still in the mix... another tireless soldier in a thankless job.  In the other thread Weary mentioned that Mike Townley and Jack flew in just for this... I'm sure Kevin did as well, thanks for your selfless efforts the past 4 years  :beermug: :beermug:

As for Jack... it seriously boggles the mind how downright schupid and misinformed Trinidadians can be.  I can't believe people seriously thinking that what this crook saying about the players getting paid is true.  In fact I can't believe that people take anything coming out both sides of that man mouth as truth.  The thought that this man is seriously contending for a senior political/government position in the next couple days tells me all I need to know about the sophistication of the TnT populace.

That some on here want to make the argument that things cannot POSSIBLY get worse if Jack Warner is placed anywhere near the national Treasury compared to the current administration... is as alarming as it is disappointing.  I hold no quarters for Manning, but there is incompetence/arrogance/corruption... and then there is evil/arrogance/corruption.  I don't know Jack Warner's soul so it may be presumptuous of me to call him evil... but one cannot possibly be as boldfaced a liar and as defiantly mean-spirited towards others... for no good reason...  and yet know the fear of God in your heart.  It just can't happen.

His coziness with Volney has rightly been highlighted by Mr. Townley as a cause for concern... partisan politics aside, would that the voting populace would take note of this as well, and ask the question whether they trust either of these two men in a position of leadership, control and influence in TnT.

I am not sure if it's the "sophistication of the TnT populace" that is to blame but more so the media. If this exact same situation was in the US JW woulda been crucified by the constant media attention highlighting all these issues from when he was in charge of the TTFA and in his stint as special advisor, but in Trinidad if it didn't happen last week the media doesn't focus on it.

When i tell people I cannot vote for the UNC/Cop because of JW and list the troubling issues that arose over the years most vaguely remember that something was wrong with the final qualification game in 1989 and there was something with the moneys after the 2006 WC. The problem is they all think it's just a government issue, i.e. the TTFF is run by the government and not as a private enterprise run by JW and friends.

Football / Re: SPANISH FOOTBALL • LA LIGA 2009 - 2010
« on: March 06, 2010, 10:37:55 PM »
Where the La LIga men?

It seems that Real gone top on goal difference with a win over sevilla..........

Real move top with last-gasp win
Real Madrid came from two goals behind to beat Sevilla in a thrilling game as Manuel Pellegrini's side moved ahead of champions Barcelona on goal difference.

Xabi Alonso's own goal gave Sevilla a first-half lead with the visitors going 2-0 down after keeper Iker Casillas misread Ivica Dragutinovic's free-kick.

Cristiano Ronaldo's sidefooted finish sparked the Real comeback with Sergio Ramos heading home to make it 2-2.

And Rafael van der Vaart's scrambled stoppage-time goal sealed the victory.

Earlier on Saturday Barcelona drew 2-2 with Almeria, with the champions coming from behind twice to earn a point thanks to two goals from Lionel Messi.

It was an uncomfortable game for Barca, who had coach Pep Guardiola sent to the stands in the first half, with striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic red-carded in the second period.

That draw provided Real with the opportunity to leapfrog their bitter rivals, though Pellegrini's team did it the hard way after Alonso put the ball in his own net as he tried to stop it reaching Alvaro Negredo.

There seemed little danger when Dragutinovic strolled up to a Sevilla free-kick but somehow the ball crept inside the post with Casillas scrambling across his line to put the visitors 2-0 up.

Cue that remarkable Real recovery with Ronaldo firing in his 14th goal of the season and Ramos heading in following a corner four minutes later.

With time running out Ronaldo seemed certain to score only for Raul to get in the way of the Portuguese striker's shot, but substitute Van der Vaart's close-range finish ensured the perfect finish for an ecstatic Bernabeu crowd.

The win was no more than Real deserved given Guti hit the bar with a ferocious shot, while Gonzalo Higuain struck the woodwork twice in three minutes, with goalkeeper Andres Palop thwarting wave after wave of Madrid attacks.

With the title race in La Liga finely poised, Barca and Real will meet in a potentially decisive El Clasico on 11 April.

you guys correct me if i am wrong, but i always thought that rights were sold by a region basis, so espn/fsc may have the rights to broadcast a competition in the US but not nessasarily in the caribbean/latin america.

So if no one has buys the rights to broadcast the WC then it is supposed to be blocked even if we pay for the channels broadcasting it since they are not supposed to be showing the event out of the paid for region

International - Spain, supported them even when they couldn't win anything mainly because they feilded players from my favorite club side

Club - Real Madrid, first real club game i ever sat down to watch that was not between english teams was Real vs Barca in 95. After that 5-0 demolition there was only ever going to be one team for me to support. Strangely if i had watched the fixture just a year earlier I might be a Barca lover to this day  :puking:

Rivaldo goal take win simply because it crowned off a hattrick which to me will go down as the best single-handed performance I've ever seen...

1) 3rd goal in a hattrick of class goals
2) Bicycle from on top the box, under tight marking
3) Final minute of the game
4) Must win game to qualify for champs league
5) Club president couldn't contain himself and subsequently issued a formal apology.

It doh get better than that.

Yep, has to be one of the greatest, I already cracked open ah beer celebrating Barca not making it to CL and then that  :o :o :o

Estebian Cambiasso, Argentina v Serbia, 2006,

I was lucky enough to be at that match and Argentina put on a clinic that day, could have been at least five more goals like that one

We are getting what we truly deserve and this shite about  good performance  and cinderella team is smoke being blown up our arse,   we playing the game like there is  no thought process involved in it, mind u the 1st thing to go when  a man tired is his "thinking" ablity.   ok so we we werent embarrassed, so everybody good. was that our aim? was that why all the money and time was invested? To not be embarrassed? we will never meet a weaker italian side than this one.

We went neck and neck with the italians so we should hold our heads  high, absoulte  and utter poppy cock.  no wonder we  cant produce a team that can  be world beaters, we still battling with inferiority complexes. how did the usa beat spain at the confed cup by saying this is the #1 team in the world  so we would do good to jus go neck to neck with them and lose.

our aim is way too low and I for one will not be congratulating this team who vex lost ,this is big men football. you screwed urself and i cannot applaud that. i really hate when we throw away a game announcers coming and say they made us proud. After all this time and effort to not b in contention to make the 2nd round  is really heart breaking  4 me. i cannot express that enough.if italy dont lose a game but dont make it out of this group u think the italian media would say this team made them proud?. not a chance in hell. we are settingthe standards   too low and for us competing is a win.  thats a losers mentality. i must admit as much as some jamiacans annoy me  sometimes i admire the mentality that they have, that no one is better than them and that mentality is evident in the way they play all sports. imagine a jamaican pardner giving me talks about their horse that won in santa rosa geez they compete 4 everything.

i really hate to lose  to a side thats not physically better than us. we need to stop encouraging a losers mentality   where jus competing makes us proud. if so then we dont belong on the world stage.

freakazoid, i completely agree with you, the only reason this team didn't win or draw is because of belief, the italians believed that they are supposed to be winning and are contenders to take the entire competition and they fight to make it so.

they are not a better team than us but belief and lack of concentration for 90 minutes cost us a chance to make it to second round

I don't think you are reading other people's post, there cannot be any alternative to the TTFF because FIFA is set up so they don't have to allow one. This football business is not a democracy, it does not matter what alternative there is in place of the TTFF bacause FIFA will never let something like that be recognised. It does not matter if the players union, the govt, the private sector and the public get together and agree on an alternative FIFA does not have to do a thing.

I think you are one of those people who think of the national team as really a team representing Trinidad and Tobago, it is not, it is a team representing the TTFF. No different to if KFC having a small goal side and playing against the small goal side of Jamaica KFC, only the board of KFC makes the rules.

If a serious local challenge is mounted to the TTFF and the players and clubs stop recognising them then Concacaf/FIFA will stop recognising T&T ball, it's that simple.Either play by their rules or don't play at all.

Breaking into the TTFF to even have a vote is impossible without their permission.

but it hasnt been attempted, if it was and it failed i would not be posting at all about this topic. i guess people prefer to choose the easy way out, forget about challenging bc its pointless, if that was the attitude, enslavement would still exist at the level it was in colonial times.

maybe you could post feasible ways that you think this could be attempted, please try to consider the present state of FIFA, Concacaf and the TTFF
