So yuh feel he din come up with Bobby out of convenience?

No quite the contrary, he uses Bobby, because it is convient most people knows him as Bobby.

Step back from the political world, in corporate world there are many examples off people going by names other than their birth names simply because communication is easier, or they are simply tired of havng them name butchered by people who cannot pronuce it.  Would we question them as being sell outs. NO because you do what is necessary to get the job. Like the indian guy who picks up the phone when you call the help desk and says with an american accent "hello my name is paul and I will be happy to help you with your PC."

Ah tink yuh playin devils advocate....granted dey mighta call him bobby from small but yuh cyah deny
de people and dem change dey to make the names more palatable or less "furrin"...especially in them banjo playin states
good ole boys doh like too much ah syllables to twiss up dey tongue

For example I have a partner name Satyaveda and over the last 20 years  I seen his name transition to simply Veda because it was easier to say, almost no-one would know who Satyaveda is but then again he spent most of his time in the Carolinas.

So for Jindal case as he works his your way up the political ladder, should he use his birth name or the name everyone know him by. I could see it now.

"Hey remember to vote for Piyush come election."
Pewweee ??? who is that ?
Yuh know  Secretary of the Louisiana Department of Health , Bobby
Oh yeah did some good wrk restoring Meicaid
Yeah i could vote for him."

For practical purposes he would used the name everyone knows him by so they voters can identify the they are voting (Bill Clinton v,s William Jefferson Clinton).
.
.
Plus the added benefit of having a more American name. Not sure about mrs haley stories though.

The highlighted is nonsense... first off you don't know that the 'have' to change anything.

Secondly, them changing name and religion does in no way negate their accomplishments, they not changing their race which is apparent to all.

Thirdly, even if they change their names/religions... that is their business.

I could not agree with you more.

Bobby is actually Gov. Jindal nickname which dates to his childhood identification with the sitcom character. He has said, "Every day after school, I'd come home and I'd watch The Brady Bunch. And I identified with Bobby, you know? He was about my age, and 'Bobby' stuck." He has been known by his nickname ever since, though his legal name remains Piyush Jindal.

Maybe I should not have doubted hime when during his rebuff to the President's address he spoke of his dad calling him Bobby.

1. What is your definition of "a lot"? because a cursory search reveals only this http://www.socawarriors.net/forum/index.php?action=search2
2. Have you given consideration to who the posters are that are using the term and why?
3. If you were offended did you contact the mods?
4. If you were offended, why would you think it okay to "freely" use the N-word on the forum?
1)   Maybe “a lot” was not the right word to use, but perception can be one sided.

2&3) No I am not offend,  my post was more of a reflection of a recent post where the word “creole” was used and the poster was told that it was a racist word. (Searched for it but could not find it but I know it existed.)  I was trying to address what i percerived as a double standard when one word is acceptable and the other is not.

4) Maybe I should have used a little more tact in raising my issue on double standard and used the phrase N-word instead of the spelling it out.  If anyone was offended I apologize it was not meant  as a slur but to highlight what I believe is a double standard.

A bit dated but I have to admit AK lost some points after reading this.

Swizz Beatz’ estranged wife Mashonda is going public with her husband’s alleged affair with Alicia Keys. The R&B singer has written an open letter to the “Superwoman” on Twitter. The couple, who filed for divorce, have a two-and-a-half-year-old son together.

The following letter from Mashonda was issued in response to Keys’ tweet on Friday night: “Having a heated debate n the studio. Question is…N love is it better to go 4 the choice that is ‘SMART’ or the choice that has ‘SPARK’??”

After having a great evening with my son and enjoying some fun twit chat, I decided to sign off and get some work done. However, a few hours later I was advised that I should check @aliciakeys twit page. I’ve never reached out to her on twitter before. I feel our issues are a lot more serious than a website conversation. Not to mention that I’ve reached out to her many times in the beginning of this whole thing, as any wife would do. Unfortunately, I never succeeded in getting a response. The 1st time I meet AK, my husband introduced us to each other at an event. ( I have no choice but to call him my husband, until he is not anymore) In the messages that I sent to her (AK), I made it very clear that on the contrary of what she might be hearing, I am still married to my husband, living with him and just had a child. Its been two years and I still have not received a response. What I do receive, is constant displays of selfishness and disconcern to me and my son.

I was a fan of AK’s last album, we were both signed to J Records and I always checked up on her projects. I sang her songs and admired her for creating Superwoman and Karma, I would never deny her, her talent. I believed in her until I found out she was possibly sleeping with my husband. The affair was denied by both, until it was finally admitted months later.

Already I can hear some of you saying ” why are u blaming her, You cant make someone leave their wife, You cant break something thats broken”. Well, my marriage was not broken, as far as I knew we were celebrating our sons birth and getting ready to celebrate our 5 year wedding anniversary . Call it blind love, whatever. I call it being a devoted wife.. As far as me blaming her and not blaming him, thats false. Me and my husband have worked out our differences. We are in a good place as people and as parents. I accept his choices and I am comfortable enough with myself to move on. I am so very blessed in many ways.

My concern with AK is no longer the fact that she assisted in destroying a family but that she has the audacity to make these selfish comments about love and wanting to be with someone, even after knowing their situation. How is this the same Superwoman that I sang out loud with in my truck? I ask myself sometimes.

If you are reading this Alicia, let me start by saying, you know what you did. You know the role you played and you know how you contributed to the ending of my marriage. You know that I asked you to step back and let me handle my family issues. Issues that you helped to create.

Im not saying everything was perfect all the time but no relationship is perfect. We made a vow to God and I believe you should have respected that, as a woman. I know you owe me or my son nothing but I just wish you would’ve handled things more carefully. I’m not judging you, I put you and the whole situation in the hands of God, the Higher Power. Just know that as a woman, I expected so much more from you. I never had intentions on reaching out to you this way but after reading your twits tonight, and the constant disregard, you left me no choice. I feel that after 1 and a half years of you hiding this affair and acting like it doesnt exist, that now is the time to confront it, since you talk so openly about it now

This is not a publicity stunt, I dont have a record coming out. I just need to close this chapter in my life and that means confronting our issues. There is a small child involved. His dad loves him to death and he wants to spend more time with him but hes afraid because he knows we don’t have a relationship. This is my main concern. My son NEEDS his dad and I NEED to be comfortable with you. For him!

I know many will see my point and many will not be able to look into what’s real because they only want to see Alicia Keys the celebrity, not the human. This is not for the “people”, this is for you. Like I said I was left no choice but to reach out to you this way. By now, Im sure you want to find a balance in this as well.

I read your tweets tonight and I felt they were very insensitive. You have no idea how much pain I was caused because of this affair. Its baffling to me that you don’t understand what I might have gone through with this situation. I dont consider myself a victim anymore, Ive learned alot from this! I just ask you to try and be a bit more realistic and delicate to the situation, at least until my divorce is final. I felt me attending the party would have been a starting point for us, since you shook my hand after I offered it, but I suppose I was wrong.

If its so, that you and my husband are meant to be together, then God bless you both and I hope you never have to deal with what I did. I would not wish it on my worst enemy. If you two being together forever is the case, its more of a reason for us to get along, because I’m not going anywhere. Theres a child to be raised.

To answer your tweet, choose smart over spark. Sparks burn everyone, be smart! Its simple actually, just think of the shoe being on the other foot.

Stay blessed and lets work this thing out with respect and dignity.

General Discussion / Re: The making of a cabinet?
« on: May 31, 2010, 09:56:19 AM »
The People's Cabinet

by Tony Fraser
Port of Spain

The new cabinet gets down to business
Intent on implementing her post-election boast of an end to the prefixes of "Afro and Indo Trinis", Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has formulated a cabinet which could stand scrutiny in this plural society.
Notwithstanding the fact that the two major parties in the coalition accounted for above 60% of the seats in parliament, Mrs Persad-Bissessar allocated 13 ministries to persons of Indian descent, 10 to those of African origin and two ministries to members of European ancestry.

The two were assigned crucial positions in the cabinet, one, the elected Stephen Cadiz, who was given a "safe seat" in an Indian constituency and Mary King, an Irish-born Trinidadian who is married to a Trinidadian and has been living here for decades.

But even more significant is the fact that of the 10 Afro-Trinidadian ministers three have been appointed to the Senate, which means they had not contested the elections.

The ministries allocated to non-Indos are the vital portfolios of national security, justice, works and transport, trade and industry, labour, arts and culture, public utilities, health and tourism.

Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar brought balance to the five-party partnership with one ministry to the Tobago Organisation of the People, and four to the Congress of the People - despite the fact that Mrs Persad-Bissessar's United National Congress (UNC) gained 21 of the 29 seats won by the People's Partnership.

Obviously responding to the large support base given to her by the gender movement, Mrs Persad-Bissessar appointed five female cabinet ministers and four women among the team of junior ministers.

Those are considered encouraging numbers by the gender movement.

Significant among the cabinet appointments is new Attorney General, Anand Ramlogan, at 37-years old, relatively young but with quite an amount of experience and success at the bar.

Heading the finance ministry is the experienced and regionally respected economist, former central bank governor, Winston Dookeran.

In such a position he must certainly be the favourite to act as prime minister in the incumbent's absence.

Mr Warner is the new Works and Transport Minister

Then the powerful and influential Austin Jack Warner named first on the list of ministers with the vital portfolio of Works and Transport.

Like in the instance of a previous UNC government, Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar has relied on a retired army Brigadier, John Sandy, to take charge of the Ministry of National Security.

The issue of crime

Interestingly there is now a three-ministry attack on the number one issue of crime.

In addition to national security there is now a Ministry of Justice, led by the controversial former high court judge, Herbert Volney, both working in tandem with the Attorney General.

The Government's success or failure will be based on the performance of these ministries to significantly reduce crime and to erode the blossoming criminal enterprise.

It is criminal activity which has placed the country under fear with 3,000 murders during the nine-year reign of the PNM.

With the critical and historical requirement for the diversification of the economy away from its almost total dependence on oil and gas to be achieved, well-known economist, Mary King has been given the job of planning minister.

It is an issue that she has written about for many years; now she will be challenged to "put her money where her mouth has been".

A similar challenge is posed to sports commentator and international swim coach, Anil Roberts, who previously shouted himself hoarse from his perch as talk show host.

Predictably, calypsonian Winston "Gypsy" Peters has been given the responsibility for arts and culture.

Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar has followed the lead of her predecessor and not taken a ministry.

She however has two junior ministers in her office, and that is where she says the information portfolio will rest, having not named a minister of information.

While there is not going to be an extended and fun-filled honeymoon for the Prime Minister and her cabinet, there is much goodwill.

More so that she has sounded the right notes in her first overtures a week into office.

But she has warned her ministers of the "expectations" to be fulfilled after the many disappointments of the last regime.

So are we saying that in 2005? Those that vote for the COP were disenfranchised UNC Only and no disenfranchised PNM. Well I don't wrk for the EBC so can't argue otherwise and I guess they will always be a majority of safe seats and the election will be decided by a few.

It has always been like this!

So is the number of seats skewed in one party's favour?

Does one party have more safe seats than the other?

UNC supporters still have the balls to say that PNM supporters are "PNM till I dead"...U all should be ashamed to even say anything close to that...When the UNC administration was swimming deep in corruption...No matter what they did, all the UNC seats still remained safe. Why no seats swinged towards the PNM during that time?..

Isn't this a bit rash, how else would the PNM win the election if the UNC did not loose seats. Since the previous election was tied 17.  ;)

I believe you are refering to the lost of Arima a traditional PNM strong hold. However you should also remember the Chaguanas seat that the PNM won last election. I belive what we are seeing is that soon there will be no safe seats,.

The are numerous examples of so called preferential treatment to people of different backgrounds, be it the enrollment process for medical school at UWI or the make up of a national team.

So you feel under represented in certain section of society, but instead of claiming prejudicial practices and stopping short of crying out for affirmative actions. Take a step back and ask was the best person hired for the job? Did the individual(s) want the job.

I will speak from my perspective, growing up civil i.e. police man, army officer was not something I aspired too, they aren’t any of those in my family and I was simply not exposed. So naturally when pursuing my career these were not paths that I considered. To say that the composition of the civil service is skewed one must also consider that applicants for the jobs are also skewed.

There is no disputing that the hiring practices of past governments have been skewed to benefit their supporters and thus appeared to be racial even if not intended.

If we are to break the cycle, we as a society has to figure out how to expose the next generation in all aspects. I left home ~12 yrs ago but before leaving my interactions with the police would never have inspired me to become one.  I believe that I would have a better life if I did something else.

If the new AG wants to see more Indians in the civil service maybe he should looking at ways of encouraging them to enroll.  This also extends to sports.

This by no means is a denial of racism in our society, I choose instead to put fwd a possible fix.
