Trinindian,
Really think about. Why aren't Indian football on the Trini team. What about track and field, rugby, basketball, swimming. The same question should be asked in Guyana and Suriname where there are a large amount of Ino bros and sis. Are  you trying to say all those organizations don't like or don't want Indos to represent our respective countries?

I don't care to give any credence to this sentiment, but I recommend that you view the previous thread to read everyone else opinion if you are so inclined.

97
This is heartbreaking and equally disturbing... just 4 years ago in Germany I remember us... every creed and race feteing the night away... no black, no indian, no white... no chinee, no middle eastern, just Trini... and for Brown Trinbago  ;D

Not sure about that 4 years ago it was why it ah have no indian on the team, to which the response was that cah play football (sports)

So the choice is between two crooks. On is the current PM and the other will be accountable to the new PM if elected. So if Kamla wins and allows Jack to steal,  she will have to held accountable for him. But who do we hold accountable for our esteem Project Manager, especially if we reelect him and send him back in to do more of the same.

I appreciate everyones concern that Kamla is Warner puppet, but what of the concerns that the PNM organization is Patos company of marionettes.

No one knows who will win tomorrow, and I am not a factor in the outcome because I will not be voting. But I do hope that if the PNM looses they use the opportunity to reevaluate the current party leadership.

99
All very unfortunate.
However, something frightens me more than asshole supporters...

Asshole leaders.

Read yuh siggy and come again.

Trinindian... you simply CANNOT be serious.

anyway... I heading out, time tuh go wine on sumting... I'll leave you people in here up tuh allyuh devices.
The point was not to say that a Mr Imbert  and Mrs Browne equals a J. Warner or Volney, simply to point out that there are undesirables in each party.
Enjoy the wine , like a true trini the party does not start till midnight.

Lefty,  ah know it not easy,  but at the end of the day you have to realize that both parties will have die hard supporters that leave a lot to desire, but you are not voting for the supporters you voting for who you want to represent you in parliament.  Who is going to seek your interest?  Do you believe that is now the PNM because some UNC supporters hurled racial slurs at you?

Which would be people like Jack Warner... and Herbert Volney.

As compared to Colm Imbert .... or Mariano Browne.
again pick your poison

It take me over 25 years to come to that decision ,you should have ask why before flaring .The reasons are 1 ,Only the PNM could properly control the ppl of that country .if you think it bad with the PNM trying they best ,imagine how out of control the populace really is .
2.The first time another party took over it had a coop under there watch !

But there was none the second time.

it may not happen to us, however what happens with the government affects us.

Unless u mother was abused by kamla herself, then u eh really have no excuse for changing u vote cause at the end of the day, pnm doing mess and we all have to suffer weather u is inidan or african if they get back into power

what happens wit d govt affects everybody, and yes is not Kamla saying it,, and yes alot of shit going on wit d pnm gov't and let meh jus tell yuh someting dat same mother an' me been cussin back an' foward bout d shit d gov't doin because she is ah pnm-tid but it bad sammy, and it doh give confidence to vote for people, whose support tellin yuh to yuh face, we doh like yuh...................how I ask u, do look past d general hateful sentiment especially when d opposite no way near dat nasty eh tell mih...................an for d last time, ah not preachin race, preachin race "to me" is "dey hair does be too f**kin oily" stating an untenable situation dat quickly treatening to become violent is treating wit facts not mere idle stereotyping.

Lefty,  ah know it not easy,  but at the end of the day you have to realize that both parties will have die hard supporters that leave a lot to desire, but you are not voting for the supporters you voting for who you want to represent you in parliament.  Who is going to seek your interest?  Do you believe that is now the PNM because some UNC supporters hurled racial slurs at you?

truth is I dont believe either party has the people's and I mean all peoples interest at heart.............is ah tussle for the treasury pure and simple..................... but, if dis was jus about some uneducated fools it would be one thing, but you get stories from people in the public service about wholesale removal of black people in public office, the last time dey was dere.................and not jus d vetoing of high level positions"for those coming hot an' sweaty to throw that" it was system wide and seemed to have no rhyme or reason apart from what was obvious

Is dispensation of the unc going to be different maybe......................but in my view d general sentiment of your support dont be to far from yuh own, even if not outwardly set forth.

I would tend to agree with you, and go a step further and say that the all politicians seek there own interest; few if any live up to the mantra of “off the people for the people.”  Like you I have heard the stories of the prejudicial hiring of the UNC, and recently we have some questionable examples from the PNM i.e chief justice.
I am not impressed by Kamla, and I wished the COP had run by themselves. But I also understand that their coffers were in no condition for funding an election campaign. The decision you must make is choose between the devil (PNM) you know and the devil (UNC) you don’t .
If you choose the devil you don’t , the only thing you can do is hope the previous hiring practices went out the door with the previous political leader.  But the one good thing about democracy is come next election you get to learn from your mistakes. “Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.”
I agree with your take on d general sentiment of the ones that you chose to support dont be to far from yuh own, but this is a sentiment that is promoted by tales of one group acting out against the other when they are in power.  But you must remember that many of these story tellers will promote their own agenda.
Ultimately the decision is yours.  The way I see it do you  vote for more or the same or the small possibility of something different that may or not be better.

Now if there was only some way the peope could bring a vote of no confidence in the gov't and force an early election.

103
Some how I neva hear bout anybody goin 2 a doubles vendor and eh pay and say is we time now. While in 1995 nuff maxi man complain bout peeps jumpin in maxi and say is we time now.

Don't know about the doubles man, but in 2001 when I was studying abroad  young lady said that she was going home after graduating now that UNC was not in power she was assured to get a job.  Does that count????
It should not because everybody does not think that way,  and that Is what I choose to believe.

oh so you and Weary had similar experiences..the only ting different is which party won an election from a different year..hmmm

Yuh know  the strangest thing was that I did not remember that until just now 

There are two parties going up for election.
One party has been in power for the last eight years~. And most if all would tend to agree that present course that nation has taken is not the right one.... and we must change. The second party going up for election formed the government for ~ 6 years prior before the current party came to power. Now this party had a checkered tenure in gov't and is accused of some underhand act ivies very similar to what the current govt is being accused off.
It is safe to say that both parties are less than desirable. However the party in opposition has elected a new leader and claims to be offering an avenue for change, yet their manifesto does not show how this change is going to come about.
So now comes the decision should I vote for the existing gov't,  some would call them lesser of two evils, even though I disagree with their policies, the same policies will continue if they are elected.
Or should I vote for the party who has plans I know little off?
Should we  tend to gravitate towards the opposition despite the unanswered questions on their policies.  Because we don't want 5 more years of the existing gov't and their policies.  Choose the promise of something different, a promise that may end up broken.
Is it possible to think of one’s  vote not as an endorsement for one,  but instead the disapproval of the other?

this post come like those shows on History channel about big foot....or UFOs......watch for a whole hour...real questions raised..but no answer in the end...an hour wasted.

LOL , next time change the channel to FOX.
Sammy I doh live home, so I cah vote. Just trying to raise some question for voters to think about yet remain politically neutral.

TT's coalition politics

By Tony Fraser
Writing from Port of Spain, Trinidad

The UNC and COP have agreed to form a coalition if elected

Coalition politics frightens the life out of Trinidad and Tobago’s 54-year old ruling People’s National Movement (PNM).
This is true both as a “weapon formed against it” or if some leading calypsonian were to suggest to the PNM hierarchy (“Patos”) as a means of the party becoming a coalition force of the multi-ethnic, multi-cultural and multi-religious groupings which make up this difficult-to-understand, even more difficult-to-control society.

What has been said above is no “mamaguy” (big shot, boasting) talk; the youths of today would say “no fooling”.

The proof of such a disposition is in the political history of T&T.

Even when faced with the possibility of seeking an alliance with the Tobago-element of the National Alliance for Reconstruction in 1995 to stay in power by accommodating with the NAR’s two seats to break the 17-17 deadlock in Trinidad, the PNM leadership sang its ancient mantra: “we’ll win alone, lose alone, and go into government or opposition alone.”

Memories of 1986

In 1986, having been in office for 30 straight years, the PNM was obliterated by the opposition in the coalition, National Alliance for Reconstruction, 33-3.

It was the first time that the party of historian and the country's first Prime Minister Dr Eric Williams was beaten in a general election.

And this was notwithstanding the fact that the PNM was beaten in local government elections back in the late 1950s; by guess what, a coalition of ethnicities, social and business classes.

PNM: facing another coalition challenge

Piqued by the audacity of those in the coalition to successfully oppose him, Williams lashed out with perhaps his most famous speech: “Massa Day Done”.

In it, he castigated the Indian community for aligning itself with the merchant and planter classes of the old white Creole.

It was he claimed an attempt by the Indians to invite “Massa” (white ruling classes from colonial days) to return.

Against such a background of PNM trouble with coalitions, it is therefore quite understandable that as campaigning intensifies for the May 24 general elections and as the coalition of 2010 comes together, Political Leader of the PNM, Prime Minister Patrick Manning, without the historical background of his party’s founder, is using his claimed close relationship with God (he has said he will become a pastor when he leaves politics) to take him out of his very secular trouble.

The "devil's" bread

“What I see as emerging from those opposite to us is a disaster in the making. They talk unity but their policies don’t stand for that, their policies are divisive … If you put God out of your thoughts and let them come back, you’ll have to eat the bread the devil kneads.”

Winston Dookeran's COP in opposition alliance with the UNC

This time around, the coalition of forces also includes the same Indo-Trinidad political constituency of previous years.

There are, however, now two elements of the constituency: the large and monolithic United National Congress (UNC) led by Kamla Persad-Bissessar; and the Congress of the People (COP), the creation of respected economist, Winston Dookeran.

But so too is the business class inside the coalition, even if less obvious than on previous occasions.

But significantly this time, a few of the leaders of the Black Power Revolution of 1970, Makandal Daaga (then Geddess Granger) are there to appeal to the black social underclass, the rock upon which Williams built the PNM house.

In the mix too, and not for the first time, is a large cross-section of the labour movement. In 1976, the radical unions joined with the Indian-base of leader, Basdeo Panday, to form the United Labour Front.

But while there is a “vibe” in the society for change stimulated by quite a large chunk of dissatisfaction with the ruling party, especially its leader, the volatile cocktail mix is making many wary.

How will Errol McLeod, the most militant trade union voice of the last 25 years, going to sit in a cabinet with conservative Indians, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, former governor of the Central Bank, Winston Dookeran and representatives of the business class?

Coalition concerns

That is a question that is beginning to haunt potential supporters of the coalition and will need to be answered by the coalition partners. The PNM is making sure everyone believes the forces to be incompatible.

But for one of the major architects of modern coalitions, the late Lloyd Best, such aggregations in T&T must be a “party of parties” without any pretence to sell them as one organic whole.

Patrick Manning is going head-to-head with Kamla Persad-Bissesar

Best argued that the mechanism has to be created to allow the horse-trading of the different interest groups to take place within the party.

He nonetheless was always a couple steps ahead of the rest of society in his proposals for economic and political reforms.

But notwithstanding what has been said to be the inherent weakness of coalition parties in Trinidad and Tobago, the reality is that the two coalition governments formed, both lasted their allotted five-year stints in office.

Moreover, on the three occasions that governments collapsed in office in T&T, they were all one-party governments.

Mr. Manning led two of them – 1995 and 2010; the other (2001) was that of Mr. Basdeo Panday’s United National Congress.

While there are many issues to be discussed, inclusive of the legitimacy and sustainability of the coalition, allegations of deep corruption in the government, the inability of the government to make a dent on widespread and violent criminal activity, the parties and their leaders are still sparring, looking for weaknesses in the defences of each other.

But what is never short on an election platform in Trinidad, not so much Tobago, Tobagonians take themselves very seriously, is picong (poking fun) and mauvais langue (bad talking).

The first the ability of the Trini (Trinidadian) to dispense with spicy wit, the second searing and caustic accusations usually spiced with Sparrow-like double entendre; I won’t dare to relate a few examples on a respectable BBC website page.

But in all seriousness, the coalition issue is going to occupy a prominent place on stage and will also result in impassioned invective.

A ringside seat is necessary

PM refuses debate offer

Trinidad and Tobago's Prime Minister, Patrick Manning, says he has nothing to gain from participating in a political debate with his main rival, Kamla Persad Bissessar, of the opposition United National Congress ahead of the 24 May general election.

The country's Chamber of Industry and Commerce has invited the leaders of the two major parties contesting the election to a televised national debate on the issues.

But Mr Manning, who heads the governing People's National Movement, says he will not be participating in the debate.

*******************************************************************************
EDit added guardian article

Manning on debate with Kamla: ‘I have nothing to gain’

Prime Minister Patrick Manning has no intention of entering into any debate with Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar before the May 24 general election. Manning made the announcement yesterday, while speaking with members of the media, shortly after he completed a walkabout in Tarodale Heights, which is located in his San Fernando East constituency. He was responding to the Trinidad and Tobago Chamber of Industry and Commerce’s launching of the T&T Debates Commission at its Westmoorings office yesterday. The commission issued an invitation to both Manning and Persad-Bissessar to have a debate on leadership issues on May 18—six days before the general election. (See: http://guardian.co.tt/news/politics/2010/04/28/tt-chamber-sets-commissio...) The Debate Commission’s purpose is to strengthen the local democratic process by staging debates on matters of national importance.

According to chamber president Angella Persad, the commission’s primary objective is to enable the citizens of T&T to learn directly from the leadership of the parties what are their visions and plans for the country in the years ahead. Manning, however, said he would have nothing to gain by a debate with his opponent. “It is unlikely that I will participate in any such debate, very unlikely,” he said. “You all need to check and see what the implications of these debates are. Our political judgment is that we may do it, but not now.” He said his party preferred to walk the constituencies and meet the residents. “The PNM, instead of doing these debates, prefers to do as we are doing and walk around as we are walking around now,” he said.

“It has nothing to do with the answers you give or any such thing. What do I have to gain by doing a debate with Mrs Persad-Bissessar? Nothing to gain by that.” About an hour earlier, around 4.45 pm, Manning, accompanied by party faithful, met with and heard the complaints and concerns of the Tarodale residents. As the loudspeaker blared PNM campaign slogans, Manning started his walk at Sion Drive Extension, and made his way along Yallahs, Spring Hill and Green Hill avenues, Green Hill Extension and Grange Drive. Manning acknowledged that many of the concerns dealt with various housing issues which, he said, were due to fast construction and supervision that were “not of the best.” He said the Housing Development Corporation would revisit the area and assess the various problems.

***********************************************************************
Personally I believe this should be the next step in T&T politics, a forum akin to the American system where members of the public can raised questions they want answered, away from diatribe of trumped up promises that are spewed at political rallies. Note the British have recently adopeted a similar model for the upcoming elections.

Next on my political wish list would be a  2 term limit for the PM.
