Football / West Ham trial for Daniel.
« on: August 13, 2008, 12:58:10 AM »
West Ham trial for Daniel.
By: Shaun Fuentes (TTFF).

Midfielder Keon Daniel could be one of the next Trinidad and Tobago international to grab the opportunity of plying his trade in the English Premiership. Following this country’s August 20 2010 World Cup qualifier against Cuba, Daniel will head to West Ham United for a one-week trial.

The Tobago-born player, who once had a training stint at Manchester United, got word of West Ham’s interest from an associate of the club and after subsequent follow ups, the invitation was extended for Daniel to attend the trial. It is understood that Daniel was spotted at the T&T versus England friendly international on June 1 in Port of Spain.

Daniel though will be hoping to not only impress West Ham boss Alan Curbishley during the trial but he will also be keeping his fingers crossed over a work permit application once the club decides on making him an offer.

“It’s going to be a great opportunity for me and it’s one I’m looking forward to. I’m not worried as once I get over there I will give it my best and show what I can do. Going over before I started playing for the national team may have been a bit strange but now I’m playing regularly and I have been to England before so this time I know what to expect in terms of the conditions,” Daniel told TTFF Media.

The former T&T Under 20 player mentioned that the “Hammers” were keen on having him over at an earlier date. “They actually wanted me to come earlier this month but I couldn’t because of the matches we have now leading up to Cuba. (So) arrangements have been made for me to go up after the Cuba game. If things work out for me… we also have to look at the transfer deadline which is August 31,” Daniel noted.

Daniel becomes the second player on the current national senior team being scoped by a Premiership club with Khaleem Hyland also being looked at by Portsmouth and is close to signing a contract depending on a work permit application.

On the topic of the national team, Daniel added : “Right now we are just focused on playing and training as much as we can because that is one main way of getting our game right. We are aiming to reach a certain level. I think we are on the improve and we are working towards an opening win in Cuba.”

I hope this don't reach ESPN for them to laugh at we like they did the bajans.

Found in the bottom of http://ttffonline.com page:

"Individuals Interested In Wearing the Red,White and Black on the International Stage. This is Your Chance for a possible pick. Players should be aligned with a Professional Club, Team, College or University. Submit relevant information to ttff1908@yahoo.com or shaunfuentes@yahoo.com"

I start thinking if we should do applications for Birchill, Kelvin Jack, Collin Samuel and Denzil Theobald to get call up? :rotfl:

Football / Watch Thierry Henry Play For Free in New York...

ESPN - Soccer Stars: Steve Nash, Baron Davis, Thierry Henry and Company - TrueHoop By Henry Abbott

Soccer Stars: Steve Nash, Baron Davis, Thierry Henry and Company

June 24, 2008 10:19 AM

ESPN's Marc Stein has word that Steve Nash and many of his friends -- including several NBA players, and some of the best soccer players on the planet -- will be playing a soccer game tomorrow afternoon in New York City to raise money for charity.

It's free and open to the public. It will take place at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Nike Field in Sara D. Roosevelt Park. The game is just off Chrystie Street (between Rivington and Stanton Streets) south of Houston.

Among those expected to participate are Baron Davis, Jason Kidd, Raja Bell, Leandro Barbosa, Joakim Noah, Thierry Henry, Claudio Reyna, Robbie Fowler, Steve McManaman, Jozy Altidore, Juan Pablo Angel, and Gregg Berhalter.

What Stein's story does not mention, however, is that Marc Stein himself will be playing. He's a die-hard soccer fan who plays regularly.

He has a tactic in mind to look good in such a high-level game: Stay close to the NBA players like Kidd and Davis who did not grow up with the sport.

Davis, however, reportedly wants to get around his inexperience with his feet by playing goalie.

UPDATE: Turns out Stein won't be the one on the court who is not a current full-time professional athlete. Nash's good friend Simone Sandri from NBA TV, Italy's Sky TV and the online edition of Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport will also play. Sandri is a midfielder who played soccer at Seton Hall and played professionally in his native Italy for clubs in the third division (his hometown club Novara) and fourth division (Saviglianese). Stein is not without his own credentials, having spent one week on the books of the Dallas Sidekicks of Major Indoor Soccer League fame, in 1999.

Stein explains how the game came about:

Nash spends a good bit of his summers playing soccer in New York and has grown close with Reyna, who moved to Major League Soccer's New York Red Bulls after playing in four World Cups and a long career in Europe that included stints in Germany, Scotland and England. Nash and Reyna are co-hosting the event and a subsequent private auction in SoHo to benefit their respective foundations, billing it as "The Showdown In Chinatown."

Henry and Nash are also close, but the Barcelona striker didn't expect to be available to make a trip to the States this week. That changed when France crashed out early at Euro 2008, placing last in the so-called Group of Death behind the Netherlands, Italy and Romania and managing just one goal -- from Henry -- in three games. ...

The Suns have to come to accept that Nash, 34, will play a lot of soccer in the offseason as a way to keep his body in top condition while also taking a break from competitive basketball. He still schedules regular shooting sessions in the summertime, but the bulk of Nash's regimen features gym work and rec-league soccer.

"I can't wait," Nash said. "Football and my foundation are two of my big passions and the chance to bring together guys like Thierry and Baron and Jason and Claudio ... it's going to be a lot of fun. And the best part is that it's free to anyone who wants to come watch us."

Asked about Nash's soccer habit, Suns president Steve Kerr said: "I have no problem with it. It keeps him in shape and keeps his mind fresh."

Football / Follow your Heart or sacrifice for your Country?
« on: April 10, 2008, 07:27:12 AM »
I was thinking why most trinis who go overseas to play happen to be Strikers/Forwards.  I know for a long time it has been marketed that the forward position is the best to strive for and you can make a name for your self  scoring alot of goal.  That intends to influence you as a  youth to dream about being a striker for a  top class club, for example Dwight Yorke at manchester united.  But in my opinion for the countries sake we are loaded in talented forwards for example Kenwyne Jones, Stern John, Jason Scotland, just to name a  few.   But there is only room for only 2/3 strikers out of 11 players on the field.  Where are the next Latapy's, the foreign based T&T midfielders.  What we need to get loaded in the midfield.  Thats the heart and soul of a football squad, ask Roy Keane, Pele, Maradona, Latapy,  Dunga, etc.  My main point is should borderline strikers like Randi Patterson, Colin Samuel, Anthony Wolfe, Scott Sealy, Darrel Roberts change their position in sacrificing there striker dreams to help their country playing as midfeilders.  Dwight Yorke did it in his older days in order to help us because we were alreadyy loaded at Forward, they should do it while they are young and groom into the position.  If they did im sure they will always get called up seeing that we dont have much foreignbased midfielders.   They cant complain about not getting called up anymore. How many foreign midfeilders do we have playing overseas? Densil Theobald is the best we have out there and thats not a good sign.  So what do you think, would you advise the boardline Strikers I.E. Randi Patterson, Colin Samuel, etc to concentrate in being a midfielders?. Follow your Heart or sacrifice for your Country?

Did CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh change to the 'San Juan Kings'. If so i think thats a great step by a PFL club. First of all the name is easier to remember. Example off the top of my head i cant remember the TnT team that played Chivas. i can remember cuz they name not simple like a San Fernando Strikers.  I think i was some vibe fm team.  Second, 'San Juan Kings' will promote tourism and making the San Juan area and people

I want Yorke and Latapy to come back after their stints as players/assistant coaches/general managers and come run the TTFF. We need people who love football to run the country, not money lovers like Jack Warner (not really a trini, a grenadian) and Oliver Camps (should of retired years ago).

Galaxy search for unknowns to play with Beckham

LOS ANGELES, Jan 17 (Reuters) - A week after signing David Beckham, perhaps the world's most famous soccer player, the Los Angeles Galaxy turned to the unknown on Wednesday announcing the MLS team would hold open trials.

For $130 would-be players will be given the opportunity to earn a spot on the squad alongside Beckham, who signed a five-year deal last Thursday that could net the former England captain $250 million.

The trials, which will be overseen by Galaxy head coach Frank Yallop, will be held on Feb. 10 at the Galaxy's home stadium in Carson with select players advancing to the second round the following day.

Open trials, known as tryouts, are not uncommon in North American professional sports and occasionally unearth a rare talent. Vince Papale, a 30-year old bartender attended an open tryout for the Philadelphia Eagles and made the team becoming the oldest rookie in NFL history.

Papale's story was made into a Hollywood movie.

This is a POSITIVE thread for the encoragement of our East Indian community to introduce their kids to playing in the football field.  We all should not look the other way and initially think of this as another race clash, but understand and look at the bright future if we had 100% representation of trini's playing the beautiful game. We only promoting positivity and encouragement to have the entire nation playing football after our first journey to the world cup.  I'm an afro trini and its sad to see the great football indian friends i grow up with discourage to play football because of their fathers only introducing them to cricket and also the blatant stereotypes that they cant play football.  This is 2006, so when the players come back from the WC and while the football fever is still high ill like to the see the encouragement of the enitre nation to come together, equal as one and prepare the best of TnT for 2010 South Africa.
