Football / More Tartan Army support for TT

BEAM ME UP SCOTTY

WE will, of course, be supporting Trinidad & Tobago in Germany this summer because of their Scotland connections. It’s not just Jason Scotland, the St Johnstone striker. No fewer than three of the T&T squad have nicknames with a Caledonian ring.

Oor Jason is known as Scotty. Forward Scott Sealy is called Scottie. Both of which are self-explanatory. Less obvious is why defender Atiba Charles is also known as Scotty. This could lead to some confusion in terms of communication on the park.

Others in the Soca Warriors team who might qualify as Scotties because they play in Scotland include Marvin Andrews of Rangers and Russell Latapy and Densill Theobald, both of Falkirk. Theobald’s nickname is Bleeder. Andrews is known as Dawg. Latapy has two monikers, the Little Magician and Stompy. The former is a tribute to his skills, the latter presumably not a reference to any penchant for dirty play.

Not that it is at all relevant, but the socawarriorstt.com website indicates that the T&T support is also blessed with a stunning array of Caribbean tottie.

(For those of you who don't know, tottie means a really hot chick)

Football / World Cup vodoo kit???
« on: April 23, 2006, 04:10:50 AM »
Found this today...hilarious! :rotfl:

From: Sunday Hearld
Tom Shields' Sport Diary

IT appears there may be a lot of voodoo about at the World Cup finals. A German company started it all by marketing the FooToo Kit.

This consists of a voodoo doll (sporting a white football jersey with black shorts), various needles, and a set of flags of the nations in the tournament. The process is simple. Attach the flag of your least favourite nation to the jersey and stab away.

While the manufacturers of the FooToo kit have provided equal opportunity for all who wish to conjure up a World Cup hex, the British tabloid press see it as a dastardly attack on England.

That enterprising red top, The Sun, hired their own English witch doctor in retaliation. Doktor Snake (or Jimmy Lee Shreeve, to use his real name) from Norwich will be sticking a coffin nail into his German doll.

Doktor Snake urges England fans to do likewise, and has also composed spells called the Jerry Jinxer and Blighty Booster to chant.

As the nail is stuck in, fans should intone: “Nail of pain bring the German players aching legs! Nail of pain make them take to their beds!”

Perhaps the Foreign Office might help with a translation of the chant into German. Perhaps Sepp Blatter might announce strict Fifa sanctions against voodoo practitioners.

Football / Anybody going just for the lime in Germany?
« on: April 22, 2006, 05:17:15 PM »
I know that the ticket situation has left many without a means to see the games themselves. But how many of you will be making the trip to Germany anyway? For the liming and atmosphere if nothing else?

Liming is a professional artform, and somebody has got to show these people how it should be done. ;D

Hey Portsmouth just beat Sunderland 2-1. They are now on 35 pts, so I guess they're staying up.

The fight is now between West Brom and Birmingham, as it should be.

What I really want from this world cup is for :

a) Trinidad to perform well at the WC, as long as we win/draw at least one game, and we not at the bottom of the table, I could live with that.

b) For Trinidad to beat England. Not because of the team, but the bloody press and "pundits" who have been making fun of us since the draw.

c) For all our players in the lower leagues to get better contracts. They deserve it. Sometimes all a good player needs is an opportunity to show what he is capable of. I hope the boys make use of this opportunity, and that club people are watching and willing to take them on.

Well, I like Harry, so supporting Portsmouth.

From what I saw down there, and gleaned from Shaka, he and Harry tight. Is after Harry left dat de bad treatment started. If yuh look at it, Harry do a Beenie with Portsmouth. They were surely on their way out. Now they look like they staying up. Again, Harry has come in and saved the day for Portsmouth.

Is ah good ting the FA looking for big names and ting to take over from Sven, otherwise Harry could very well come in and work wonders with England and help them actually win something.

And I agree dat Birmingham has got to go! They real treat both Stern and Dwight bad. They partly responsible for Dwight losing his love for the game (in the UK anyway), breaking his spirit. Hard or soft, no matter what was taking place in his personal life, Dwight had love to play. For dat, Birmingham going down.

Anybody remember what team Dwight was playing for when the racial incident took place, but the manager refuse to back him up? Was it Birmingham or Blackburn?

Doh get me wrong, I am grateful for the input of the Warner empire towards TT football. But at what price? For every dollar invested by them in TT football, they get it back five fold. Notice I didn't say profit five fold. Ever heard that old bible question "what can it profit a man if he gains the whole world but loses his soul?"

I could be wrong, but I would not doubt that the reason for the Government's reluctance to invest heavily in the Soca Warriors is that there is no doubt that at least one third of whatever monies are given are going straight into the pockets of the Warner clan, in their minds, as rightful compensation for their efforts. Not to mention whatever business schemes they can come up with to actually earn profits.

All this is such a drag. It is taking away from what is important, from what should be everyone's focus. We're going to the World Cup! For the first time! Why oh why does the Warner clan and their cohorts have to constantly provide a distraction from that?

And another thing. The official Soca Warriors website, which is supposed to be run in conjunction with the Ministry of Tourism IS NOT THE PLACE for Mr Warner to be answering any Government minister, or printing any personal letters to anyone. That was so out of place, so low class. I was appalled. If the minister can make a local press release, why can't you? Why do you have to give international release to what should be an internal disagreement. Why air your dirty laundry on what should be a site to promote all the positive things about the Warriors and the country?

All this bickering in the press is just making us look like simpletons who don't know what we're doing. And more importantly, making us look corrupt as hell. Is that the reputation they want the Warriors to go to Germany with? I swear, some people have got their heads stuck so far up their own arse that they can't think of putting things aside and compromising for the greater good.

Trust me boss, if I had an outlet I would definitely write an article or two. But I am not a journalist. And even if I were to write an article, one thing I learned living out here is that the "white man" (sorry to be non-PC) doesn't want to hear about any "third world" country living or doing better than them. They all think that we're poor, half-literate simpletons, farming somewhere, playing cricket on the beach, and the best thing to happen to us is that we've come on a plane to the "1st world!. Steups! ::)

Excuse me, but last I checked Aussie dollars was only just below TT dollars when valued against the pound. So, yuh not really enticing anybody with dat bribe. Now, if yuh offering payment in BRITISH pounds, we might be able to work something out.  ;D

While the world's media seems to be fascinated by the fact that a white boy playing for a caribbean island, I am forced to think back to what really comprises the population of Trinidad and Tobago.

Amerindians - the original owners/occupiers
Spanish - over three hundred years of occupation
French - coffee and cocoa planters encouraged to come here by the Spaniards towards the end
Africans - slaves brought by the French
British - took over from the Spaniards, heavily into sugar cane production
Africans - brought by the Brits
Indians - brought by the Brits
Chinese & other Asians - brought by the Brits
Portuguese - brought by the Brits
Scottish & Irish - brought by the Brits
Syrians - came across around World War 11
Jewish - came across around World War 11
Americans - came during World War 11, some stayed or returned
Venezuelans - forever making the short sail across
Other Caribbean immigrants - traditionally immigrating to TT

And of course there are the numerous articles talking about most of the population are either African or Indian. I don't know about you, but when was the last time you met a Trini who wasn't mixed with something other than what he appeared to be?
With a population like this why does it surprise anybody that a white boy is on the team?

If I missed out any sector of the population, post it let's see.

I am so fed up with the whole Birchall story already. I am fed up with the stereotypical babble, making us look like some poor ass ghetto in the caribbean. If any journalist out there really wanted to do a profile on TT, all they have to do is a google search, and link up to the many, many sites that explain what we're all about.

They talk about cricket-mad islands. Sorry, but where? I am sorry, but I am a girl, and all we played in school was football. Why don't they talk about the vibrant schools football league in TT, that has produced some of the most gifted players from the caribbean? Why don't they talk about the fact that we once hosted the U-17 World Cup? Why don't they talk about the fact that there are more stadia and football fields than beaches in TT? Why don't they talk about the fact that more youth leave our shores on football scholarships and club contracts every year than any other island? Oh gorm, make an effort and do some research nah!

They want to talk about thank god for the world cup giving us something to be happy about, and like we're so badly off that we need it. Why not talk about the fact that TT is the number one supplier of natural gas to the US? Why not talk about the fact that some of the largest production plants in the western hemisphere(outside of the US & Canada) are located in TT? Why not talk about the fact that TT has a literacy rate of 98%, not even england has that! Why not talk about the fact that the finance sector of TT either owns or runs most of the banking across the caribbean, and increasingly south american region?

In a way, I cannot wait for the world cup to actually start, so we can get on with the business of FOOTBALL, and let them talk about that for a change. ::)
