FIFA EXCO MEETS ON WARNER ALLEGATIONS TODAY

Attached are documents relative to the allegations against CONCACAF President Jack Warner that he made profits on the sales of 2006 World Cup Tickets.

All data was made available by Warner as he prepares to hear from the FIFA Executive Committee when it meets and discusses the matter in Zurich today (Friday).

Also attached is a letter to Warner from his Swiss Attorney Dr Mark Bruppacher. Warner will meet with him again on Friday following the FIFA Executive Committee meeting.

Re: Ernst & Young Report and Related Claims

Dear Chuck:

As you requested, I have investigated the allegations in the July 8, 2006 Ernst & Young letter that was “leaked” to Andrew Jennings earlier this week. As set forth in the attached memorandum, the investigation discloses:

1. Jack Warner did not order, receive distribute or redistribute any of the tickets as alleged in the E&Y Letter;

2. Jack Warner purchased relatively few tickets for the 2006 FIFA World Cup. He even turned down his allotment as a FIFA Vice President. The tickets he did purchase were done through proper channels and with the proper disclosure of the end users, typically friends and family members;

3. In August, Urs Linsi requested that Jack Warner become involved with Simpaul Travel, which Mr. Warner refused to do until properly authorized to do so by the FIFA Executive Committee; and,

4. There are issues concerning the creation and conclusions of the E&Y Letter and subsequent “leak” of that document that raise even more serious issues for FIFA and how it conducts it business.

Please let me know if you have any questions or need any additional information.

Very truly yours,
Signed

Re: Jack Warner 2006 FIFA World Cup Ticket Purchases

Date: September 14, 2006

1. Introduction

As requested, I have analyzed the July 8, 2006 letter and exhibits from Peter Coats and Thomas Stenz of Ernst & Young to Urs Linsi, FIFA General Secretary (the “E&Y Letter”). In addition, I have interviewed Jack Warner and Daryan Warner and reviewed their emails and other contemporaneous documents. This memorandum and attached exhibits sets forth the results of my investigation. Please contact me if you have any questions or need any additional information

2. Executive Summary

The E&Y Letter is based upon incomplete information and contains fatally erroneous “conclusions.” Based upon my more thorough review of the facts and circumstances – including contemporaneous documents and correspondence – it is clear that Jack Warner never received any of the tickets referenced in FIFA Ticket Office (“FTO”) payment report number 20,605 and was not involved in the purchase, distribution or re-distribution of any of those tickets.

3. E&Y’s Incomplete Investigation Is Fatally Flawed

Having spent years as a federal prosecutor and having conducted numerous investigations into a wide variety of matters, the best I can say of the efforts of E&Y here is that they were incomplete – woefully incomplete. To their credit, Mr. Coats and Mr. Stenz specifically acknowledge in the body of the E&Y Letter that its “conclusions” are based upon incomplete investigation. Specifically, with respect to Jack Warner, Section 9 of the E&Y Letter states: “The matters raised in this report have not been discussed with Mr. Jack Warner or Daryan Warner.” The E&Y Letter provides no explanation as to why these issues were not discussed with either Mr. Jack Warner or Mr. Daryan Warner.

In addition, the E&Y Letter fails to include any reference to the actual tickets purchased and received by Jack Warner. (See Section 6 below.) The E&Y Letter asserts

Collins & Collins

ATTORNEYS AT LAW

2. Without any documentary support that customer reference number 201498572 is the customer reference number for Jack Warner. 1 Section 5.1 and Appendix 7 to the E&Y Letter detail the tickets filled and covered by FTO Payment Report 20,605. As set forth in sections 4, 5 and 6 below, however, there is clear, contemporaneous documentary evidence that Jack Warner neither ordered, received, distributed, nor redistributed any of the tickets referenced in FTO Payment Report 20,605.

Appendix 7 to the E&Y Letter further includes an unidentified spread-sheet with hand written notations purporting to be ticket requests for customer reference number 201498572. Nowhere on this spread-sheet, however, does customer reference number 201498572 appear. Likewise, the spread-sheet contains no reference to Jack Warner or any information attributing this document to Mr. Warner. Moreover, this spread-sheet does not correlate in any way to the tickets actually requested and received by Jack Warner but rather the tickets included in FTO Payment Report 20,605. (See Sections 6 and 7 below.)

The only ticket request information contained in the E&Y Letter that is directly attributable to Jack Warner is a 23 June 2006 email from Mr. Warner to Jaime Byrom in which Mr. Warner, on behalf of the Trinidad & Tobago Football Federation (“TTFF”) requested a number of tickets to matches 49-64 for TTFF sponsors and partners.

Notably, this ticket request was not filled. (See Exhibit 5).

In short, the E&Y Letter fails to include any information regarding the tickets that

Jack Warner actually received.

4. E&Y’s “Conclusions” Are Contrary To The Documentary Facts

The E&Y Letter contains great detail as to how it determined that tickets included on FTO Payment Report 20,605 were ultimately sold on the secondary market to customers. The E&Y Letter, however, contains no evidence or allegation that Jack Warner was aware of the purchase or distribution of those tickets. Notably all of the matches related to FTO Payment Report 20,605 occurred between 15-23 June. In addition, E&Y conducted a number of interviews on 20 June, 27 June and 28 June. It is not until 4 July that the FTO created Payment Report 20,605, which it then sent to Jack Warner on 5 July. The E&Y Letter fails to note that shortly after its receipt Jack Warner notified Jaime Byrom, FTO, that he (Jack) was not responsible for the tickets on FTO Payment Report 20,605. Mr. Byrom then informed Mr. Warner on 8 July that the tickets on that payment report had been provided to Daryan Warner and that Mr. Byrom would not provide Jack Warner with the tickets he had requested for the Final Match on 9 July until Mr. Warner signed a credit authorization form for FTO Payment Report 20,605.

1 Section 7 of the E&Y Letter notes that: “due to the nature of the FWCTC ticketing system used for last minute sales it is possible for FTO customers to have more than one customer reference.” Notably, however, there is no indication that E&Y or the FTO ever attempted to determine if any other customer reference numbers related to Mr. Jack Warner or whether customer reference number 201498572 was erroneously attributed to Jack Warner.

Collins & Collins

ATTORNEYS AT LAW

3. Mr. Byrom incorrectly asserted that Daryan Warner had not paid for those tickets prior to receiving them. (See Section 6 and 7 below.) Under this duress, Jack Warner signed the credit card authorization form.

Based solely on the fact that Jack Warner signed this credit card authorization form – and failing to disclose the circumstances by which he was required to do so – the E&Y Letter erroneously intimates that Jack Warner was responsible for the order, purchase and distribution of the tickets covered by that report.2 As set forth in Sections 5 and 7 below, however, there is clear, contemporaneous documentary evidence that Jack Warner neither ordered, received, distributed, nor redistributed any of the tickets referenced in FTO Payment Report 20,605.

5. No Coincidences: July 8, 2006

The E&Y Letter was issued on 8 July 2006. The issuance of the letter on this date seems more dubious – if not nefarious – than coincidental. A detailed review of the events of that day, reveals that a number of important – and incongruous – actions took place. Here is a brief outline of that day.

Background: Last Minute Tickets for the Semi-Finals

•On 24 June, Jack Warner requested from Enrique Byrom 2 tickets to Match 55,

13 tickets to the Semi-final Matches (Matches 61 and 62) and 30 tickets to the

Finals (Match 64). (See Exhibit 6). In his request, Jack Warner specifically

identified the names of the individuals for whom he was requesting these tickets

(personal friends and T&T dignitaries). Id. On 25 June, Enrique Byrom indicated he would see what he could do to fill this request. (See Exhibit 7). As of early on 3 July (the day before Match 61), Jack Warner did not know whether Enrique Byrom would be able to fill the order and was becoming quite anxious. (See Exhibit 8).

Cheryl Abrams, Jack Warner’s assistant, then emailed Jaime Byrom, with a “cc” to Enrique Byrom, again setting forth the ticket requests for Matches 61, 62 and 64 and noted that any category of ticket would be acceptable. (See Exhibit ). Finally, that afternoon, Enrique Byrom confirmed Jack Warner’s ticket request. (See Exhibit 9.) This experience is important to note, since 8 July was the day before the Final Match (Match 64).

Incorrect FTO Payment Report

•On 5 July, Jack Warner received FTO Payment Report 20,605 from Yvonne Goggin, FTO, via email. (See Exhibit 10.) Jack Warner forwarded that email to Cheryl Abrams, Jack’s assistant who was overseeing ticket related issues for him.

Ms. Abrams reviewed the payment report and informed Jack Warner that it

included charges for tickets that he had not ordered. (See Exhibit 10.) (These 2 It should be noted that the E&Y Letter never actually alleges that Jack Warner knowingly or actively participated in the order, purchase or distribution of the tickets referenced by FTO Payment Report 20,605. It only notes that he signed a credit card authorization form in connection with that payment report and includes his name in parenthesis next to customer reference number 201498572.

4. communications are the first Jack learned of these tickets, all of which were for matches that had occurred approximately 2 weeks earlier.) Jack Warner and Ms. Abrams then spoke and determined that Jack Warner had not ordered any of the tickets on FTP Payment Report 20,605. Jack Warner then informed Jaime Byrom of this fact.

July 8, 2006

•On the afternoon of 8 July, Jack Warner and Cheryl Abram still did not know whether or not Jack’s ticket request for the Final Match would be filled. The individuals that were to receive those tickets were regularly inquiring about the situation and Jack and Cheryl were quite anxious.

•At 12:17:18 P.M. Eastern Standard Time on 8 July3, Cheryl Abrams emailed Enrique Byrom to inquire on the status of the tickets for the Final Match. (See Exhibit 11.)

•After receiving Ms. Abrams email, Jack Warner responded to her email and sent it to Jaime Byrom with the following message: “Guys, I am soooooooooo desperate now that, at this point in time, whatever category I get for my friends and family, I will take.” (See Exhibit 11.)(emphasis in original)

•Shortly thereafter, Jaime Byrom contacted Jack Warner and told Jack to come to the FTO to get his Finals tickets.

•Once at the FTO, Jaime Byrom told Jack Warner that the only way Jack would receive his Finals tickets was if he signed a credit card authorization form to pay FTO Payment Report 20,605. Jaime Byrom wrongly told Jack Warner that the tickets reflected on that payment report had been received by Daryan Warner without payment.

Desperate to receive his Finals tickets, Jack agreed to sign the credit card authorization form and sort out the matter out after the Finals.

•When Jack returned to his hotel, Enrique Byrom met and told Jack that he (Enrique) had heard that Jack had paid FTO Payment Report 20605 by credit card. Enrique then told Jack that Daryan Warner, who left Germany and returned to T&T on 22 June, had already paid for those tickets with cash. Enrique Byrom then gave Jack Warner 29,820€in cash. (See Exhibit 12.)

•At approximately the same time that Jack Warner was being refunded in cash for the credit card authorization he had signed only a few hours earlier, Peter Coats and Thomas Stenz issued their 54 page E&Y Letter, prominently featuring the credit card authorization form signed by Jack Warner.

It is unclear whether this time is German time or T&T time. Either way, it is at the earliest shortly after Noon German time or shortly after 6:00 p.m. German time.

5. It strains credulity to believe that the timing of these events was merely coincidental. It would be impossible to draft the 54-page E&Y Letter after receiving the signed credit card authorization form from Jack Warner. There was barely time for the ink to dry on his signature before the report was issued. The only conclusion is that the E&Y Letter had been substantially drafted and the “conclusions” reached before Jack Warner had signed that document.

6. Jack Warner’s 2006 FIFA World Cup Ticket Purchases The E&Y Letter fails to address Jack Warner’s actual ticket purchases for the 2006 FIFA World Cup. The E&Y Letter creates the impression that Jack Warner was purchasing hundreds, if not thousands, of tickets and abusing his position as Vice- President of FIFA. That is clearly not the case as the documentary evidence shows.

First, Jack Warner did not even accept standard ticket allowance as a FIFA Vice-President (390 tickets). On 22 May, Jack Warner emailed Jaime Byrom, with “cc” copies to Enrique Byrom, Chuck Blazer, Urs Linsi, and Jerome Champagne, stating: I do wish to formally advise that I have no interest of any kind in acquiring any World Cup tickets on any personal order of mine and I do thank you most sincerely for our enquiry.

Please be advised that this decision of mine is FINAL even if I have already made a payment for same which payment I am also prepared to lose. Regards. (See Exhibit 1.)(emphasis in original).

Once the 2006 FIFA World Cup started, Mr. Warner made the following ticket requests:

•24 Tickets Match 36 (T&T – Paraguay) (See Exhibits 2 and 3)

•12 Tickets Match 42 (USA – Ghana) (See Exhibit 4)

•2 Tickets Match 55 (Rd 16 Match Stuttgart) (See Exhibit 6)

•6 Tickets Match 61 (Semi-Final Match) (See Exhibit 6)

•7 Tickets Match 62 (Semi-Final Match) (See Exhibit 6)

•30 Tickets Match 64 (Finals Match) (See Exhibits 6 and 11)

Moreover, it should be noted that with each of his ticket requests, Jack

specifically included in that request who would be using the requested tickets, generally personal friends and family.

Also, the time that Jack made a large ticket request he only did so at the request of the TTFF and specifically noted that fact in his ticket request.

7. Documentary Evidence

Please note that the oral statements provided by Jack Warner and Daryan Warner, upon which I have relied, have been substantially corroborated by numerous written documents, most frequently their contemporaneous emails.

Here is a summary of those documents:

Exhibit 1 5/22/06 Email from Jack Warner to Jaime Byrom informing Mr.

Byrom that Jack Warner would not accept his 2006 FIFA World

Cup Ticket Allotment.

Exhibit 2 6/17/06 Email from Jack Warner to Jaime Byrom confirming Jack

Warner’s request for 12 tickets to Match 36 T&T – Paraguay.

Exhibit 3 6/18/06 Email from Jack Warner to Jaime Byrom confirming that

Jack Warner would purchase an additional 12 tickets to Match 36

T&T – Paraguay using his credit card.

Exhibit 4 6/20/06 Email from Jack Warner to Jaime Byrom confirming that Jack Warner would be attending Match 42 USA – Ghana with his family and would need 12 tickets.

Exhibit 5 6/23-24/06 Email chain between Jack Warner and Jaime Byrom in which Jack Warner requests a number of tickets on behalf of the TTFF and Jaime Byrom’s return email informing Jack Warner that that ticket request cannot be filled.

Exhibit 6 6/24/06 Email from Jack Warner to Enrique Byrom requesting tickets for Matches 55, 61, 62 and 64.

Exhibit 7 6/25/06 Email chain between Enrique Byrom and Jack Warner in which Enrique Byrom tells Jack Warner that he will “see what can be done” about Jack’s ticket request for Matches 55, 61, 62 and 64.

(Jack Warner also notes that he is leaving Germany on 6/25 and returning on 6/30.)

Exhibit 8 7/3/06 Email from Jack Warner to Enrique Byrom noting Jack’s concern about whether he will receive the tickets he requested for Matchs 61 and 62.

Exhibit 9 7/3/06 Email chain between Enrique Byrom and Jack Warner confirming that Jack Warner’s ticket request for Match 61 would be filled.

Exhibit 11 7/8/06 Email chain between Cheryl Abrams, Jack Warner and Jaime Byrom regarding Jack Warner’s request for tickets to Match 64 the Final Match (and including the 7/3/06 Email from Cheryly

Exhibit 12 7/9/06 Email from Jack Warner to Daryan Warner, with “cc” to

Enrique Byrom, in which Jack Warner informs Daryan Warner, that 8 July Enrique Byrom returned the cash payment that Daryan Warner had made to him weeks earlier once Enrique learned that Jack Warner had paid that amount by credit card to Jaime Byrom on 8 July.

8. Additional FIFA Misconduct: Deliberate Leaks of Confidential Information

During the course of my investigation, I have learned that the activities of 8 July

2006 are not the only suspiciously timed actions related to the E&Y Letter. In fact, it appears that the 8 July E&Y Letter is not the only E&Y Letter related to tickets. Apparently, E&Y issued another letter in April 2006. The April E&Y Letter related to an alleged agreement that FIFA allegedly reached with Simpaul Travel Services Ltd. and 3 other agencies.

It appears that in August 2006, Urs Linsi contacted Jack Warner in connection with these alleged agreements. Jack Warner noted that he had removed himself from Simpaul in March 2006 at the direction of FIFA, as approved by the FIFA Executive Committee, and that he would not become involved with Simpaul again until so directed by the FIFA Executive Committee. This lead to an exchange of correspondence between Mr. Warner and Mr. Linsi. Mr. Warner requested copies of documents from Mr. Linsi but only received strongly worded letters from Mr. Linsi in return. This exchange of correspondence letter culminated in Mr. Warner’s September 10, 2006 letter to Mr. Linsi, in which Mr. Warner was critical of Mr. Linsi’s actions. (See Exhibit 13.) Moreover, despite his concerns with Mr. Linsi’s actions, Mr. Warner also sent a letter to the directors of Simpaul requesting that they fulfill any contracts they may have with FIFA.

(See Exhibit 14.)

The next day, it was learned that the E&Y Letters (both the April and July letters)

had been “leaked” to the British Journalist, Anderw Jennings. In addition, Mr. Jennings had received a FIFA stamped copy of the February meeting of the FIFA Ethics Committee in which Mr. Warner’s involvement with Simpaul was discussed. Like the timing of the July 8 E&Y Report being issued so quickly after Jack Warner had been forced to sign the credit card authorization form, the timing of the “leak” of these extremely confidential document – which expressly state on the first page that they are

Collins & Collins

ATTORNEYS AT LAW

8. confidential and cannot be distributed to third parties without E&Y’s written agreement – is highly suspect.

Not surprisingly, Mr. Jennings used these documents and their erroneous and incomplete information to write an extremely derogatory article against Mr. Warner.

Moreover, Mr. Jennings posted these confidential documents on the internet. Needless to say this “indiscretion” (President Blatter’s characterization; “transgression” seems more apt) has caused significant harm to Mr. Warner.

Letter from Warner’s Attorney

Dear Sir
First of all I thank you for addressing us in the matter and I may assure you of our support.. After summary review we have the following questions/comments which we hope might serve you  at this  short notice:

1.  I note that we have not seen the report from E&Y and the letter from Urs Linsi of September 6, 2006.

2. Ad the E&Y report: Who gave the order and what where the instructions (objectives of the report) to E&Y ? If E&Y had only "incomplete" information and documentation, who was responsible for that ? Or was this done deliberately ? Would the conclusions of E&Y be different if they had the "complete" information ? Did E&Y contact Jack Warner and/or other parties involved in connection with their report ? When  and how was the E&Y report made known to Jack Warner and was he invited to comment ? Is this E&Y in Switzerland that produced the report.

If the conclusions of E&Y were "erroneous" due to a misinterpretation then Jack Warner could hold E&Y responsible, also jointly with any other parties involved. E&Y as an international group could also be sued in more favourable jurisdictions than Switzerland (e.g. USA?)

3.  Ad Urs Linsi/FIFA
The September 6, 2006 letter attributed to Urs Linsi most probably is a FIFA letter? Did in contain any requests or invitation for further action, except the reference to Simpaul ? Was Jack Warner invited to comment ? Were there any conditions set or outlined, e.g. for time limits or actions ? When was the date for the executive committee meeting set, and was it set independently of the matter in question ? Is this item on the agenda for tomorrow and has it been formally correctly announced ?

Can Urs Linsi/FIFA justify a "public interest" or an interest of FIFA to spread/leak this story ? Even if FIFA could justify this, then it would still have to explain the defamatory contents of the publications.

Certainly there are claims against Urs Linsi under criminal and civil law for defamation; the place of jurisdiction would  be (not exclusively but foremostly) Switzerland. Also there are means of injunctions.

What are the FIFA regulations on "confidentiality" ? Has Linsi breached these or other internal regulations? What are the competencies of the Vice-President towards  executives i.e.Urs Linsi? Are there internal disciplinary measures ?

Does the Vice-President enjoy some sort of immunity?

4.Ad Procedures
At present this matter is to be dealt with at the executive committee meeting; there ar no other internal procdures pending due to alleged violation of regulations; is this correct ? There are no other i.e. official and public procedures pending in this matter; correct? Therefore there is no "public interest" or any justification for making this matter known outside of FIFA:. This  is certainly an offense.

Football / New TTFF Constitution
« on: September 09, 2006, 10:02:11 AM »
I almost missed it in reading the Ian Prescott report in today's Trinidad Express about the appointment of Colin Croft to head our South Africa 2010 LOC. Tucked into the final paragraph was "A T&TFF draft consitution has been formulated and will be sent to FIFA on Tuesday for approval."

So many questions now arise: 1) why the need for a new constitution (though this may be valid to make the TTFF more modern); 2)was there any consultation with the local clubs, or was this concocted in the offices of the CONCACAF President; 3) what's the thrust in this new draft constitution: a devolution of power from the Special Adviser to the clubs, or does it simply entrench the Special Advisor's role; and 4) what role does the fan of local football play in this new constitution.

In dealing with the TTFF on numerous occasions leading up to Germany, I can say that what is needed there is not necessarily a new constitution, but rather a smoking out of the existing jefes who are running an organization with a local 'parlour' mentality, when Fortune 500 vision is required.

Anyone out there cares to enlighten me?

Breaking News: **Head Coach Colin Clarke told the media yesterday that Shaka will get the start on Wednesday, August 23 in the U.S. Open Cup Quarterfinal game against Houston Dynamo. **

Further: We have been contacted by FC Dallas, who are interested in working something out with us to offer discounts for homegames for a group of TT fans. There is a game on September 2 against Houston, who knows Shaka may be between the sticks, so far he is not scheduled to be in TT for the game against Mexico on the same date. Please PM if you are in Dallas or nearby and are interested in this offer and know of other Trinis in the area. I may be in Dallas for that game or the following home game to interview Shaka for the forthcoming WN magazine. If you are interested in making the trip to Dallas to support 'we boy' let me know as well.

Football / Technical staff gets 1/4 million TT.
« on: July 13, 2006, 10:41:09 PM »
More $$ for Warriors.
By: Gail Alexander (Guardian).

Support crew each get $250,000.
Members of the Soca Warriors’ technical team who were not honoured by the Government—such as team manager Bruce Aanensen and others—are now being rewarded with $250,000 each by the Manning administration.
Former coach Leo Beenhakker will also be presented with his Chaconia gold medal and TT$1 million when he comes here next Friday, Sports Minister Roger Boynes announced at yesterday’s Whitehall media briefing.
But yet again, there has been no mention of anything for Warriors’ long standing financial backer, Jack Warner.
And those who are now being rewarded have voiced the view that Warner deserves T&T’s highest award.
Yesterday Minister Boynes said all matters of honours were dealt with by the Prime Minister and the Honours Committee. But Boynes could not say if there was anything being done for Warner.
Soon after the Warriors returned home, the Government announced monetary rewards for the 24 players who had gone to Germany and the three assistant coaches, Wim Rijsbergen, Anton Corneal and Michael Morris.
Announcing the latest set of awards for other technical staff members yesterday, Boynes said Cabinet had decided to honour them also since they were “part and parcel of the team that represented T&T so well.”

Awards of $250,000 will therefore be conferred on the following:

Bruce Aanensen—team manager.

George Joseph—assistant manager

Terrence Babwah—team doctor

Zephrinus Nicholas—trainer

Wayne Lawson—physiotherapist

Oba Gulston—physiotherapist

Ikin Williams—equipment manager

Shaun Fuentes —media manager

Cecil Wint—nutritionist

Boyne said these officers had already received bonuses in February as part of Government’s assistance for the team.
Asked why Warner had not been honoured, Boynes said the Government had worked with the list of the team supplied by the TTFF.
Yesterday TTFF head Ollie Camps said he had been in Germany when the list was supplied to the Government.
“However my personal view is that Jack Warner should definitely get an award of some sort. His has been an immense contribution overall,” Camps added.
Aanensen, who said he was happy that the technical officers were being honoured by the Government, added:
“We said we were not putting pressure on Government for anything and whatever they wanted to do was fine. However, my personal view is that I certainly think Jack Warner deserves T&T’s highest award for all his work.
“Jack did what no one else could conceivably say they have done and no one has made a bigger contribution than he has in several different ways. I feel that what he has done for football in T&T deserves to be rewarded in some way.”
Media manager Shaun Fuentes, acknowledging yesterday’s announcement, said the technical staff deserved some award and some had been somewhat hurt when they were not mentioned in the first batch of awardees recently.
“However we all appreciate everything Government and the Federation have done. Still Mr Warner should obviously be part of the awards. since he has been at the helm of everything over many years and particularly this World Cup campaign.
“Without Jack Warner none of what T&T achieved would have been possible—he’s an integral part of the whole and that must be recognised,” Fuentes added.

Cardozo blow for Paraguay
6 June 2006
by FIFAworldcup.com

The experienced Paraguay forward Jose Cardozo could miss the 2006 FIFA World Cup™ after suffering a muscle tear in his left leg.
The veteran of Paraguay's 1998 and 2002 FIFA World Cup campaigns will not be able to play for three or four weeks, according to the squad's medical team. Cardozo suffered the injury in the friendly with Denmark on 27 May, a match in which he scored the Paraguayans' goal in a 1-1 draw.

Anibal Ruiz's side open their Group B campaign against England in Frankfurt on 10 June. In Cardozo's absence, the two obvious options up front for the South Americans will be Nelson Valdez and Roque Santa Cruz, who is recovering from a knee problem.

The Tourism Development Company of Trinidad and Tobago (TDC) recently announced its promotional plans for maximizing Trinidad and Tobago’s presence in Germany for the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
The TDC, the executing arm of the Ministry of Tourism for Trinidad and Tobago, has been working on capitalizing upon this important opportunity since December 2005 when the SOCA WARRIORS Tourism Marketing Committee, chaired by Senator the Honourable Howard Chin Lee, the Minister of Tourism, was set up to coordinate tourism marketing programmes related to our participation at the FIFA World Cup 2006.
Minister Chin Lee, speaking about the promotional programmes, stated “We felt that it was important to have a well-thought out and targeted campaign for our promotional efforts in Germany as the FIFA World Cup is the most viewed sport in the world – in the vicinity of some one billion viewers in over 200 countries – and this includes most of our source markets. As the smallest nation ever to compete in the FIFA World Cup, we will be there supporting our SOCA WARRIORS Football Team. Small Country … Big Passion.”

OUR WEBSITE

On January 19, 2006 the hugely successful website, www.socawarriorstt.com, was launched by the Minister of Tourism. The site has received over 10 million hits thus far and is now viewed by more than 130 different countries (from the Caribbean to the traditional metropolis of USA, UK & Canada to Croatia, China and South America) and is one of the most popular sites providing information about Trinidad and Tobago and of our SOCA WARRIORS football players.
As well, since December 2005 the TDC and the Ministry of Tourism have commenced a targeted local, regional and international advertising campaign, which included the placement of ads in various World Cup Guides celebrating Trinidad and Tobago’s participation in the tournament, driving potential visitors to the SOCA WARRIORS website. This advertising campaign will continue through to June 2006.

SOCA CARAVAN

Plans have now been finalized for Trinidad and Tobago to have a “SOCA CARAVAN” in Germany this June. The Soca Caravan, essentially a booth highlighting tourism, trade and investment opportunities in Trinidad and Tobago, will be located in the three (3) German cities where the Soca Warriors play –Dortmund, Nuremberg and Kaiserlautern.
The Trinidad and Tobago’s team will play their first round games in Dortmund (June 10th), Nuremberg (June 15th) and Kaiserslautern (June 20th). Each city in Germany, where world cup games are being played, is mandated by FIFA to hold a “Fanfest’ where giant screens showing every game “live” will act as the focal point for entertainment and activity for fans living in, or visiting, those cities.
Each Fanfest is expected to host between 400,000 – 600,000 fans during the month long tournament and between 50,000 – 60,000 persons at any one time. These locations are ideal for the “SOCA CARAVAN” as there will be large numbers of persons visiting the fan fest prior to, and during, the games.
As far as is known very few other countries are planning any kind of similar presence at these events although it is understood that the African countries will have some kind of presence at the Dortmund fan fest.
The Soca Caravan will be at the Dortmund Fan fest for the period June 8th, 9th and 10th. It will then move to the Nuremberg Fan fest and be in place for Tuesday 13th, Wednesday 14th and Thursday the 15th. It will then move to the Kaiserslautern Fan fest and be in place from Saturday 17th through Tuesday the 20th.
This booth will present Trinidad and Tobago in an exciting and interactive way. With adequate space for the conduct of entertainment, the booth will have computers providing information about Trinidad and Tobago’s many attractions, and will be staffed by personnel from the Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of Trade and the Tourism Development Company.
The issue of Trinidad and Tobago’s cultural delegation in Germany for the FIFA World Cup 2006 is being handled separately and is under the sole purview of the Ministry of Community Development, Culture and Gender Affairs.
This entertainment is designed to stimulate interest in Trinidad and Tobago and to encourage persons attending the entertainment events to visit the “SOCA CARAVAN” booth to learn more about tourism, trade and investment opportunities in Trinidad and Tobago.

SPONSORSHIP OF FIFA MEDIA CENTRE IN BERLIN@ INTERCONTINENTAL HOTEL, FIFA OFFICIAL HQ HOTEL

Perhaps the most significant aspect of our participation at the FIFA World Cup 2006 is the sponsorship of the main FIFA Media Centre in Berlin. Trinidad and Tobago will be the sole destination sponsor and the sole sponsor of the internet café and sports bar.
The media centre is being operated by World Travel Awards (WTA), a well established tourism and travel marketing company based in London, England and which specializes in organizing media centers and internet cafes at such events. Tobago’s Main Ridge Rain forest has won World’s Leading Ecotourism Destination for 3 years in a row. This Internet Café and Sports Bar will be located in Berlin for the duration of the event and will be located at the FIFA World Head Quarters Hotel of the event, the Intercontinental Hotel, Berlin.  It is expected that up to 14,100 media personnel from around the world will be accredited by FIFA to participate in World Cup 2006.
To that end, World Travel Awards has hired the Grand Ballroom at the five (5) star Inter-Continental Hotel Berlin from June 1st until July 10th 2006. The Grand Ball room will be equipped with a 24 foot by 15 foot big screen and six smaller 12 feet by six feet screens. All 64 games will be shown on the big screen in the ballroom with full hospitality for the travel industry, media and VIPS. A 60 second TV advertisement profiling Trinidad and Tobago will be played on all screens in the ballroom and sports bar no less than four (4) times, immediately before the game begins, immediately at the end of the first half, immediately before the second half begins, and immediately after the game ends.
In addition there will be an internet café and sports bar operating 24 hours a day seven days a week between June 1st and July 10th. This media centre and sports bar will be equipped with full wi-fi capability up to 750 square meters and will have a minimum of 100 computers and laptops, for use by the world media and VIPS.
The home page on all computers, laptop and fixed screen in this internet café and connecting with the WTA servers will be of Trinidad and Tobago. As well WTA will produce and provide a multi lingual web site in 12 languages to be hosted on the computers used by the media centre. This web site will include a minimum of 60 minutes of streamed video material as well as virtual tours of both Trinidad and Tobago. The information on these web sites will highlight tourism, trade and investment opportunities in Trinidad and Tobago.
The sports bar will not only be showing world cup football but also Formula One racing, Wimbledon Tennis, US Open Golf and other similar major international sporting events taking place during that period so it will be well attended by journalists throughout the month long tournament.

ANGOSTURA PROMOTIONAL EVENTS

The Tourism Development Company will also work with Angostura which intends to aggressively promote its products in Germany at the World Cup. The TDC will work with them in offering Trinidad and Tobago themed promotional material and to assist them in hosting events starring Destra and Atlantik, who will appear in Dortmund on the evening of June 10th and in Munich on Saturday June 17th.

Dortmund plans Caribbean party
18 May 2006
by FIFAworldcup.com

The FIFA World Cup™ will get under way in Dortmund with a night to remember at the city's Westfalenhallen where leading acts from Trinidad and Tobago will bring a flavour of the Caribbean to this corner of Germany.
On 9 June, the night before first-time finalists T&T take on Sweden at the Westfalenstadion, musicians from the tiny island state will have the chance to put their country into the spotlight. A four-hour show packed with pulsating rhythms has been planned, promising a real carnival atmosphere for the thousands of football fans visiting the city.

Read about the 12 Host Cities

The event will take place at Westfalenhalle 1 and will start with a FIFA World Cup opening ceremony involving 32 local children, each carrying the flag of one of the participating nations. The Germany v Costa Rica match will be broadcast on a giant screen and once over, the Caribbean Night will commence.

More than 100 stars from Trinidad and Tobago will be there, including limbo dancers (who will have to pass under a pole no higher than a Coca-Cola bottle), incredible costumes and some of the country's most famous music acts.

These include Len 'Boogsie' Sharpe, who has served as his country's official cultural ambassador, and Junia Regrello, one of T&T's top carnival music stars. If you like Caribbean rhythms, the sound of the steel drum and are looking for some fun, then Dortmund is the place to be on 9 June.

This will be the only Caribbean Night taking place in Germany and has been planned in conjunction with representatives from the official Trinidad and Tobago tourist board. Organisers hope to attract a large crowd of football fans, doubtless preparing to cheer their team hoarse the next day. "This is our first World Cup," explained Jason Baptiste, marketing manager for the Trinidad and Tobago Tourism Development Company, "and the enthusiasm back home is incredible. Seven thousand fans will be coming over to Dortmund."

The Caribbean Night and Opening Party will mark the start of a four-week programme of events at the Westfalenhallen. Throughout the finals, Halls 1 to 3A will host concerts, plays and other events, while Halls 4 to 8 will offer accommodation to travelling fans.

The Africa Festival on 18 June and the live concert with Brazilian superstar Ivete Sangalo on 1 July will add to the international flavour of events at the Westfalenhallen during the finals.

Shaka arrives keen to shake off FA loss.
By: Shaun Fuentes.

Trinidad and Tobago and West Ham United goalkeeper Shaka Hislop arrived at the team camp at De Vere Carden Park eager to shake off the disappointment of Saturday’s FA Cup defeat to Liverpool  and instead focus on preparing with the “Soca Warriors” for their upcoming 2006 World Cup campaign.
The former St Mary’s College custodian was on Tuesday the final of the twenty-four players to check in at the camp which started on Sunday and he was soon to be among the squad at Monday evening’s session which went on for just under two hours in relatively cool conditions on the lush Carden park pitch.
The disappointment of the 4-3 loss to Liverpool on penalty kicks and the fatigue of a just ending season wasn’t easily hidden by Hislop as he went through a separate work out with goalkeeper coach Michael Maurice . But that along with a loud heckle from an on looker about “Stevie Gerrard’s screamer on Saturday” didn’t do much to affect Hislop’s usual high spirit as it related to the “Soca Warriors” camp.
“It was difficult to lose. I felt that we deserved more and it was especially disappointing to concede what was a wonder goal in injury time and then a scramble off the line with two minutes left in extra time,” Hislop told TTFF Media. “And then we had to lose it  on the Russian Roulette of penalty kicks.  I was proud of the performance and I am sure we at the club can all be. But there is no feeling like lifting the cup and no words to console the players after we didn’t do that,” he added.
The former T&T captain and the first choice in the 2-0 win over Iceland in February stressed he is set by all means to get ready for the World Cup under Leo Beenhakker, particularly after having to miss the 1-1 draw with Peru last Wednesday.
“I have to put it (FA Cup loss) behind me because I am back in preparations now for the World Cup and happy to be back with the boys again. Of course I was disappointed not to be there for the Peru match but my professional career dictated otherwise. I missed Latas’ send off which was disappointing considering how far back me and Russell have gone and been together since the under 10 level. It’s a relationship which  has existed  for over 25 years.
“I guess no one was thrilled with the result but I don’t think that what was relevant to what was happening at the time. It was more about coming together and shaking off some of the cobwebs and here we are now to engage in what will obviously be the main part of our preparations for  our matches at the World Cup,” Hislop ended. The team will train once on Wednesday morning before meeting with the media from midday for a one-hour session at Carden Park.

In 2002, Korea though playing at home, was ranked 40 going into the World Cup, yet reached the Semi Finals. In 2006, Trinidad while making our debut, is ranked 47 going into the WC, what are your thoughts on whether we can pass the preliminary round. Does Korea in 2002 give us hope? Does FIFA rankings mean anything going into the Cup?

Football / Warner Responds to Boynes' Letter
« on: April 14, 2006, 10:03:54 PM »
trinidadexpress.com

FIFA vice-president and special advisor to the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (TTFF) Jack Warner, has responded to the letter issued to the media on Thursday by Minister of Sport, Roger Boynes, with a public letter of his own.

On Thursday, Boynes' letter, complaining about the ticket prices for the "Soca Warrios" farewell match against Peru on May 10 was released. Yesterday, through TTFF media, an upset Warner responded first to the timing of Boynes' public release saying: "Unfortunately, rather than calling me directly on my return or awaiting my reply to your letter, you have sought to issue publicly, letter addressed to me on the matter of ticket costs for the World Cup warm-up match between Trinidad and Tobago and Peru carded for May 10th at the National Stadium - no doubt, hoping that with the holiday, today, Good Friday, the readership will be optimum ! !.It saddens me yet again that a football event that has so inspired and unified our nation can be so politicised."

Warner then gave reasons for the price upgrade which has seen covered and unconvered stand prices going up to $500 and $300 respectively.

He said they were:

1. "To off-set the loss of $2.2 million dollars suffered by the TTFF in the pre-match preparations between Trinidad and Tobago and Iceland in London on February 28.

2. An additional warm-up match will be played in Germany at an added cost of $580,000.

3. Coach Leo Beenhakker, quite rightly, has requested that Peru fields its best team possible for the match against Trinidad and Tobago. This required many of their overseas-based players take part thereby increasing the cost of hosting the match by a further $1.4 million dollars.

4. To cover the costs of World Cup match tickets which the TTFF has decided will be allocated to spouses/friends of the members of the team. Two tickets each are being provided at no cost to the players.

5. Coach Leo Beenhakker has requested, again quite rightly, a de-linking of the T&TFF's German office from the hotel where the Soca Warriors are being accommodated. This has meant that additional accommodation must be sought for the group at the World Cup in Germany-at a cost yet to be determined.

6. A cultural presentation will be put in place for the match with Peru on May 10th. This presentation as well as the match itself will be broadcast live to over 100 countries around the world. (The TTFF remains particularly concerned about the absence, up to this point in time , of any official announcement of specific arrangements of what Trinidad and Tobago has put in place to showcase the country during the World Cup in June.)"

The Warner letter continued in part:

"The above represents some of the major expenses to be covered through the ticket sales for the match on May 10 and, in an effort to offset some of these costs the members of the T&TFF's General Council have all voluntarily waived their rights to complimentary tickets and are each purchasing two tickets per member at a cost of $500 each. In this same vein, no complimentary tickets will be issued to VIPs, all of whom have been written to and have been so advised and of whom some 254 have agreed to purchase their own tickets - from Sir Ellis Clarke to the Commissioner of Police to the Chief of the Defence Force.

Warner also addressed Boynes' statement about the Government's assistance of $1.6m that was given for a specific qualifying match, to a sum of $6m that was given to assist in the payment of the charter flight to take the team to Bahrain.

He thanked the Minister publicly but asked: "Is this all a team needs to qualify for the greatest show on earth ? Because that is all that has been received from your Government for this team to date ! ! !"

Special advisor Warner also stated again that, "the TTFF has to date, a mere six weeks before the start of the FIFA World Cup, received no official letter from your Government on the 45 million dollar allocation which we learnt through the media."

Warner ended by, "respectfully" urging Boynes to, "use the same consideration which drove you to query the tickets costs for the Peru game, to write the T&TFF officially on the World Cup allocation and to give the Soca Warrior team members who earned this country its World Cup qualification their due incentives now."

Football / Statement from Warrior Nation Board of Directors
« on: April 12, 2006, 08:59:35 AM »
Hello all again:

Due to recent inquiries, it is necessary that this statement is issued. First of all, the fact that 600 tickets are available to WN members and their friends and family, is as a result of exorbitant telephone bills incurred by calling TTFF and their many offices and officers to secure tickets, numerous emails and countless nights of reduced sleep to get a system designed and working - all from volunteer members of the BOD and Regional Reps. It has been our pleasue to serve our members and our love for Trinidad and Tobago football that has made all of this possible.

It has been our aim from day one to see our members benefit in any way possible. Regarding the ticket prices for the Peru game, all tickets are TT$300.00. There however is a processing fee, that covers the charges incurred by the WN to make tickets available to members. As a non-profit org. this is evidently not a money-making venture. Any excess collection, if any, will be applied to one of two things, support items (flags, banners, etc.) or Youth Development. With no sponsors, everything is made possible by member contributions, donations from devoted benfactors and processing fees. To protect our members from losing out on tickets if our organization is seen as the easy way to avoid having to "text and pray", and to keep within the TTFF mandate that our tickets be used for our members and not the general public, we instituted the inclusion of a WN Tshirt for WN friends and family, since we will all be sitting together at the game. Anything less, will severely inconvenience WN members, and erode any benefit to be derived from paid membership. At any rate, WN friends and family are in fact getting the ticket at the same price, and for the extra cost will be provided a WN Tshirt.

Remember, we are just a choice for persons desirous of attending the game against Peru. One can always go with the alternative, submit a text message and if selected, purchase the mandatory four (4) tickets, even if you plan to attend alone.

Unfortunately, the BOD is unable at this time to please everyone, since local Customs and Duties, still charges to bring kits and supplies into the country.

We hope the stance of having paid members benefit from the hard work being done behind the scenes, and not persons wishing to exploit our network, is recognized.

Warrior Nation Members Avoid "Peru Ticket Text Lottery"

Once again it is our pleasure to offer you exclusive membership benefits. The Warrior Nation was graciously awarded 600 tickets for the uncovered stands by the TTFF, for the international friendly against Peru at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, Trinidad on May 10, 2006. At the game, we will be launching the "Warrior Nation Zone", complete with our own rhythm section, banners, etc.

These tickets will be made available to paid Warrior Nation members at midnight tonight, April 12, 2006. For 24 hours, ticket access will be restricted to those paid members, following which, tickets will be made available to other persons registered with the Warrior Nation website. There is a strict three (3) ticket limit on all orders, and each member is only allowed one (1) ticket request.

Each ticket costs TT$300.00, and is subject to availability, a transaction order processing fee and credit card processing fee (where applicable). Since these tickets were made available to the Warrior Nation exclusively, if you are purchasing tickets for Warrior Nation friends and family, there is a requirement that these persons obtain a Warrior Nation T-shirt. This will be reflected in all sales for persons without a Warrior ID Number.

Payment for tickets must be made within 24 hours of your receiving an invoice, and can be made via Credit Card for USA and International members, and via bank deposit or cash for TT members.

Continue checking our website for more exclusive member opportunities and events in the coming days.

World Cup Cinderella?

Trinidad and Tobago Ready to Slay Giants

By Joseph E. Wolf in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago

Most think that Trinidad and Tobago have no chance in the World Cup. But the Caribbean nation wasn't supposed to qualify either. They've imported both players and a trainer in preparation.

The Bahrain fans were unimpressed. The fans from Trinidad and Tobago just wouldn't stop with their incessant drumming during the World Cup qualifying match between the two counties' national teams last November. At first, the Bahrainis didn't even want to let the 50 musicians the "Trinis" brought along play. And during the match, a number of fans peppered the drummers with stones. It was, in short, a true clash of civilizations. Fans of the Trinidad and Tobago team often start beating their drums before the kick-off and continue right through the final whistle. They were shocked by their treatment at the hands of the Bahrainis. After all, they see themselves as quite entertaining and lively fans -- and never disagreeable.

Which is a to a large degree the same way national team players themselves treated the game until recently -- an attitude which quickly sent them to the bottom of their qualifying group and cost trainer Bertille St. Claire his job. The team was on the verge of failure and decided to bring in a foreign coach. Enter Leo Beenhakker, former Dutch national trainer and three-time Spanish champion at the helm of Real Madrid.

Upon arrival on the island, the 63-year-old could hardly believe the deficiencies of his new team. They were talented, but had virtually no discipline. Beenhakker's mission, as he saw it, was to provide them with a tactical framework. Indeed, one of his first successes was to encourage his players to pass to open team-mates instead of blindly forcing the ball in the direction of the goal. It may sound like the soccer equivalent of learning the alphabet, but the Dutchman was able to quickly turn things around. The first game of the new Beenhakker era was on March 30, 2005 -- and resulted in an important 2-0 victory over Panama.

One aging star

Contrary to a number of African and Asian teams, Trinidad doesn't currently have any big football names. Most on the national team play for meaningless lower-division teams in England or Scotland: Gillingham, Falkirk, Wrexham or St. Johnstone. Hardly any of them play in Trinidad and Tobago itself.

Their most famous player remains team captain Dwight Yorke, now 34 years old. In the 1990s, he played for Manchester United and was a major part of the team's success. In the 1998-1999 season, when ManU won the prestigious Champion's League tournament of Europe's best clubs, Yorke scored 29 goals. He now plays for FC Sydney and is a step or two slower. But he remains the heart of the team. Stern John, who plays for the English lower-division team Coventry City, is the team's second pillar.

In other words, more talent is needed, and the country's soccer federation has come up with a bizarre campaign to find it. Currently, Trinidad and Tobago is scouring the world for soccer players who have even a drop of Trinidadian or Tobagonian blood in their veins. A grandmother from Tobago or a cousin from Port of Spain can be enough to obtain citizenship. The first fruits of this strategy were harvested in mid-2005. Chris Birchall, 21-years-old, blond and British, has joined the team.

The imported hope

Birchall watched much of the last World Cup, played in Japan and South Korea in 2002, in a Staffordshire pub. But he had soccer skills and was soon playing for English minor leaguers Port Vale. But then someone discovered that his grandparents once worked in Trinidad and Tobago and gave birth to a child there -- Birchall's mother. They all eventually returned to England -- where Chris was born -- but the connection was there. Trinidad's soccer federation saw its chance, and the authorities played along.

Since May, Birchall has been playing for a country he couldn't even locate on a map before -- and he fired in the decisive goal in the team's World Cup qualification. Partially as a result Birchall, referred to as "De White Boy" or "Me Mom" -- a reference to the woman who made it all possible -- by the fans, has become a favorite. He himself is having trouble believing his own story -- and that on June 15, he will be playing against his own idols from the English Premier League.

Trinidad and Tobago coach Leo Beenhakker was brought in from Holland.
But does Trinidad and Tobago have much of a chance against the mighty English? Paradoxically, it has been two losses -- close games against the US and Mexico -- that showed the team's potential. With a bit of discipline, Trinidad and Tobago can play with almost anybody. But still, a Cinderella story like that of Senegal in 2002 or Cameroon in 1990 and 1994 is hardly realistic. The defense is rather unsteady, the attack average: The team only managed 12 goals during its 12 qualification matches.

"Soca Warriors"

The decisive question will be whether Beenhakker can get his team to play as a cohesive group. Otherwise, there is a very real chance that the weaknesses of the team will be laid bare and ruthlessly exploited during its very first game against Sweden. Indeed, Trinidad and Tobago has very little experience with European squads. In its last 50 games, the national team has only played against one European team -- Northern Ireland -- and it lost 3-0.

But the dream of reaching the round of 16 has grown since November 19, the historical day that Trinidad and Tobago advanced to the World Cup tournament over Bahrain. Parliament interrupted a session and thousands crammed into bars, clubs and cinemas to watch the live broadcast -- the prime minister even declared the next day a holiday.

Whether or not the team is successful, it is likely to become something of a cult in Germany. Adidas boss Herbert Hainer was quick to recognize the potential and signed a €10 million contract with the "Soca Warriors" soon after their qualification. The Germans, so goes the calculation, are sure to love this team.

Dwight Yorke: Hats off to Jack.
By: Shaun Fuentes.

Trinidad and Tobago National football captain Dwight Yorke, in an interview with BBC Radio 1Xtra has paid tribute to FIFA Vice President Jack Warner for his longstanding commitment to the country’s efforts to reach the pinnacle of world football.
Yorke, who along with his other teammates met with Warner at the Renaissance Hotel on Tuesday, explained that he held no qualms over Warner despite all the recent allegations being thrown in his direction.
“He’s just an excited man and rightly so,”Yorke said. “He’s put so much into our football over the years. He’s tried over so many years in trying to qualify for the World Cup. We came close in 1990 by missing out by one point and here 17 years down the line he’s still at the front of our Federation and Vice President of FIFA and now that we are going I can understand why he’s s excited about the whole thing,” the double goalscorer over Iceland added  after being asked to comment on Warner’s high emotions on T&T’s qualifications and his comments at a press conference on Monday about England being in for a possible shock on June 20.
The former Manchester United forward has been the target of the Media here and was in some more warm company on Wednesday morning as close friend Brian Lara flew up to London to join Russell Latapy and the rest of the T&T contingent at the Renaissance Hotel in Heathrow. Lara stopped by to spend some luxury time with his close pals and to extend congrats messages to the team at the same time.
“It’s been a pleasing result for us,” Yorke told TTFF Media. “It shows clearly that we can match up with the good teams and it still shows also that I can match up with the other international teams. It definitely gives us a good indication of where we are at this stage now and hopefully we can continue to get better and work harder as we get close to the World Cup,” Yorke said.
“Credit must go out to the entire team and the management staff because we know it was not going to be easy to get our act together for this game after such a long time apart since the Bahrain game but we fought that off and we were able to give an encouraging performance today and I was just simply happy to make that kind of contribution with the two goals,” added the Sydney FC skipper. “We were delighted and we feel proud to have gotten such a great reception from the fans at the Stadium and we hope this can only get better as we go into the World Cup.
Latapy, who along with the other overseas pros, were scheduled to return to their respective clubs by Thursday, also felt the “Soca Warriors” gave a compelling performance.
”Obviously it was an important win for us because we went into this match having not played since November and the coach was using the opportunity to look at a few other players and wanted to get the best out of the team. But at the same time he didn’t mind the mistakes and I thought tonight there were few of them. This is a good sign for us ahead of the World Cup and hopefully we can keep it up and move on from here,” Latapy said.
Meantime, on Wednesday, Leo Beenhakker set off for Dublin to view the Sweden versus Republic of Ireland game while the other assistants – Anton Corneal and Wim Rijsbergen and scouts were also scheduled to be at the England/Uruguay and Paraguay/Wales encounter.
The home-based team contingent will head back to Port of Spain on Thursday with the exception of Beenhakker, manager Bruce Aanensen, Media Officer Shaun Fuentes, team doctor Terrence Babwah and security officer John Sandy who head off to Germany to attend a FIFA-organized workshop for the team staff members of every qualified 2006 World Cup team.
The full team will next reassemble in Port of Spain on May 7 for the friendly international against Peru on May 10 to be followed by a nationwide road show among other events.
West Brom & Aston Villa interested in Dwight Yorke.

Trinidad & Tobago and Sydney FC captain Dwight Yorke put on a five-star show in front of a host of watching managers at Loftus Road on Tuesday night as he scored both goals in the win over Iceland. Yorke is playing some of the best football in recent years after being moved into midfield by T&T coach Leo Beenhakker. West Brom boss Bryan Robson, Villa's David O'Leary and Steve Bruce from Birmingham City were all in attendance to see Yorke strut his stuff this week. Along with confirmed interest from Derby County, Reading boss Steve Coppell is also keen to bring Yorke back to England on-loan for the rest of this season.

Soca Warriors Supporters Club formed

Wednesday, February 22nd 2006

Trinidad and Tobago's national footballers, the Soca Warriors, now have a supporters club.

The Soca Warriors Supporters Club (SWSC), also known as "The Warrior Nation", was incorporated on December 12, 2005 in Miami, Florida, USA.

The club is a partner of the www.socawarriors.net website which has been in existence since 2000 and which has been the online hub for news and discussion regarding national football teams for the past two World Cup qualifying campaigns and also numerous CONCACAF Gold Cups and other regional tournaments.

Information about the Soca Warriors Supporters Club is available on the club's website: www.thewarriornation.com or from local representative, Gilbert O'Connor Jr, at 687-6010.

A release from the club says the elected board of directors are Nigel Myers (president/treasurer), Denzil Streete (vice-president), Antonio Tobas (secretary) and Anthony Valley (member-at-large).

Local Olympic medallist and ardent football supporter Ato Boldon is the Club's ambassador.

Inshan Mohammed, founder of www.socawarriors.net, is executive advisor.

Membership in the non-profit club was available from last Monday.

SWSC promise to be the driving force behind organised support for Trinidad and Tobago football teams wherever in the world they play.

T&T fans in England will have the first opportunity to experience the Warrior Nation at the national team's 2006 World Cup warm-up game against Iceland next Tuesday at Queen's Park Rangers' Loftus Road ground in London.

From the ghetto to the cold
Trinidad Newsday

LIFE IN Scotland is surely a marked difference from life at Nelson Street, Port-of-Spain for Trinidad and Tobago midfielder Densil Theobald.

Theobald recently took up an 18-month contract with Falkirk, a club in the Scottish Premier League, who has, amongst its personnel, Russell Latapy, who serves as a player/coach.

In fact, it was Latapy who recommended Theobald for a trial stint last September.

When Latapy returned to the national squad for the Concacaf World Cup Final Round qualifier against Guatemala earlier that month, he was so impressed with Theobald’s overall game that he invited the 23-year-old for the trials.

The Falkirk’s management were also pleased with what they saw and, during the recent transfer market (for European clubs), added Theobald to their ranks.

While the debate remains about the number of overseas-based players in the national football team, one must be happy for Theobald to parade his skills to a wider audience, in light of the trials and tribulations he has faced in his life.

Born to Delano and Jasmine Theobald on June 27, 1982, Densil and his two brothers were raised on Nelson Street, an area he easily refers to as the ghetto.

"I (grew) up from the ghetto, hard times (and) negativity surrounded me and I was able to turn that into positives," he noted.

"It was not everyday that we had something to eat. (It was a) struggle to get clothes on our backs, we even had to wear clothes for days, wash it over and stuff.

"It was a rough time going up but that helped me to be who I am today," he continued. "I’m very proud to say that. It has helped me to keep working hard, realising not to take life for granted and to cherish everything (that) you have in life, most importantly.

"I was fortunate enough to be blessed with a talent from God and I used that talent to help me where I am today," Theobald added.

Nelson Street, like the neighbouring East Dry River and John John areas, are known as crime havens, and Theobald was exposed to an environment of drugs, guns, crime and dysfunctional families. But, with the guidance of his parents, he never followed that path and, instead, decided to venture into the world of football.

"I was taken from a young age into Jean Lillywhite Coaching School," he related. "He brought me in, taught me the basics and from there I moved on to Malick and, from Malick, I went on to the national Under-17 team before I moved on to Canada."

In Canada, he played semi-professionally for Toronto Olympians from 2000-2001 before returning home, and almost giving up the game for good, following the death of his mother. However, Theobald got back into the groove and represented the national Under-23 team before advancing into the senior squad.

Despite a brief stint with Joe Public, Theobald was a first-choice player with Caledonia AIA/Fire in the T&T Pro League, and he is eternally grateful for the opportunities they gave him as a player.

"I believe I enjoyed my best times playing with Caledonia under Jamaal Shabazz," said Theobald. "I owe him so much and, to me, he has been a father figure. Thanks to Caledonia, I have been producing for them, bringing home the results now and then. I always see myself as a Caledonia (member)."

Shabazz, as well as coaches Bertille St Clair and Leo Beenhakker, were considered by Theobald as the ones who have been instrumental with his growth as a player.

Even though there were constant chopping and changes in the national squad, and even the coaches themselves, St Clair, and later Beenhakker, persisted with Theobald throughout TT’s successful World Cup campaign (from the first game at Dominican Republic on June 13, 2004 to the final match in Bahrain on November 16, 2005).

Concerning his mentors in the game, he was high in praise of close friend Kerwyn "Hardest" Jemmott and national captain Dwight Yorke "for his hard work, on and off the field.

"Internationally, I admire Zinedine Zidane and Ronaldinho, fantastic players. You can learn a lot from them, how they read the game and how they play the game, with their (heads).

However, according to Theobald, he left the best for last - Latapy.

"Tremendous ability," noted Theobald, "sometimes I wish I could have his style and play like him, but everyone have their own character, own personality. But I learnt a lot from them."

As far as his overall demeanour, he describes himself as somewhat moody. "I guess it comes from where I (grew up), which is in the ghetto, where there (are) so much hard times.

He continued, "I see myself trying to be somebody and wanting to be somebody. That helps me develop as a person and as a player, on and off the field.

"I’ll say Densil is, more or less, a cool person, always talkative, somebody who you can always understand and reason with, (a) very interesting person to know," Theobald ended.

In my own defence
By Keith Smith (Trinidad Express)

J.W.: ... A draft manuscript of this book Foul! is in my possession, highlighting my name, FIFA President Sepp Blatter's, and others whom he plans to malign, in the hope that they can do damage to the character of Mr Blatter and Mr Jack Warner. In the book, Liburd and Jennings accuse me of fixing matches to benefit T&T, siphoning funds and a host of other accusations which can only come from a pair of warped minds. They have vowed to bring down the President of FIFA, Sepp Blatter and one of his vice-presidents, Jack Warner. Liburd is billed to serialise this book on the Express later this year-his editor, no doubt a willing partner in this exercise...January 3, Crowne Plaza

K.S.: Jack, Jack! Is true I turned on local journalism with the serialisation of Lovelace's The Dragon Can't Dance but I swear on my father JB's grave that the first I ever heard about this Foul! serialisation is when you said it. Now look what you have done-gone and put ideas in one seta people head, including tens of thousands of my Express readers who are going to say I 'fraid you if I don't go ahead and serialise it. But one doesn't just go and serialise any book just so. How I know that what Andrew Jennings write in this book is true. In fact, old friend, they'd better not be true because it would turn Trinidad and Tobago's World Cup historic achievement into an occasion for national shame and neither me nor anybody else would be able to stand it, the whole world targeting "Trickidadians" because this man write (I know you just fling in Liburd name there to calumnise the young boy) how you fix games to grease we way into the Finals. Just because we small and half black all kinda white people now want to wash they nasty mouth on we-ent Jack? Buh, Jack, tell me something, how come you manage to get a copy of the manuscript of the book even before the book print.

Man, the long arms of the law short like Goat Street (bet not even you know where that is) compared to yours and FIFA's. Still full of lies as the book must be you went to some lengths to get it before it come out-Jennings must feel you and Blatter is Eriksson and Blair. Well monkey (Ha! How's that for a turnaround!?) go find out what tree to climb.

J.W.: ...I do not intend to continually reply to Mr Liburd's concoctions since this will serve his purpose only too well and that of the PNM. In fact I am emboldened by the Express attack on me and quite frankly hold no grudge for the paper.

Keith Smith did what he felt he had to do (in spite of the fact that he changed a positive article designed for his Sunday Christmas newspaper into a negative and most vicious one) but I, ladies and gentlemen, will also carry out my own national duty which is to rescue my country and return it to being the sweet, sweet T&T we all remembered it to be just a few years ago before the PNM resumed office...January 3, Crowne Plaza.

K.S.: Boy, they must be put me, yes. Since I small they putting my name in all kinda ting as if K not for "Keith" but "Kankalang". Ah mean, wey the hell you get this thing about me "changing a positive article designed for my Sunday Christmas paper into a negative and most vicious one". Again I swear to you, on my dead grandmother Lucy's grave this time, that had I a "positive article designed for my Sunday Christmas paper" I'd probably have put it on Page 1, it being Christmas Day and all. Unfortunately, I had no such story as I had the week before-remember "A Kidney for Christmas-brother gets the gift of life"?-and as I told our mutual friend and your employee, Roy Augustus, when he called to ask how I could put the Liburd expose on Page 1 on Christmas Day (admiringly loyal as ever, he called it "ah pile ah ass") news is competitive, the biggest story reaching the editor's desk on the day going on Page 1, regardless, which means that if a story broke on Gloria Saturday, "POPE ELOPES", bet our Catholic lives (mine and Roy's, that is) that would be the front page news on every newspaper in the world including the Vatican's L'Osservatore.

Finally for the moment (but only for the moment since I find people find this series sizzling) what is the PNM's locus standi in this local soccer scandal? Oh, yes, I see.

Is a case of your balancing your two hats or, to more accurately, two of your hats. Is not that you saying this is a PNM-engendered plot or that Lasana has a PNM agenda with this particular issue (you know more than anybody else he has been a thorn-all right, all right, at least a picker in your historically thick hide-long before you declared your political hand) but that the PNM will, in the fullness of electoral time, use all the ongoing ticket talk, not only here but elsewhere, against you. I have to admit you have a point there-even now, perhaps, that party's strategists sizing up this facial egg which you might very well have given them, pot spoon and all, on a greased platter. Patrick Manning, "Mr Big", being a different kettle of fried fish than lil Lasana.

The blanking of Lasana Liburd
By Keith Smith (Trinidad Express)

In truth, I would have had to be out of my mind to have expected the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (T&TFF), that is to say Jack Warner, to accredit Lasana Liburd to the World Cup Finals. Mr Warner said as much. He was talking backwards at the time but you could glean, if you had the slightest bit of sense, what would be the "forwards":

"Apart from the fact that he has been consistently refused accreditation to the World Cup qualifying games in T&T, who is he?" Mr Warner rhetorically asked in the speech opportunity he mounted on January 3 at the Crowne Plaza before continuing:

"Apart from the fact that he is working against his employers, the CCN Group acquiring the broadcast rights for the World Cup in 2010 who is he? In 1995 I obtained the local TV rights for (the World Cup) for the princely sum of US$1 and sold it to TV6 for US$250,000 which sum went towards the development of football in the T&TFF. The same was done in 1998, 2002 and 2006 with increases in each case. Liburd continues to make this an issue and I can give him only one assurance today and that is I will review the sales of these rights to his employers for the 2010 (World Cup Finals). So again I ask the question: Who is Liburd, what is his claim to fame?"

I don't want to waste the limited space I have here by dwelling on Mr Warner's last Liburd-related question except to say that, as we speak Liburd, through his investigation of the top FIFA official that is Jack, is one of the most famous, if not the most famous, in the sense of being talked about, football correspondents in the world today.

What I want to do, though, is to share with you the sharp craftiness of Jack's strategy. Here he is charging that Liburd "has been consistently refused accreditation to the World Cup qualifying matches in T&T", as if this was Liburd's fault and Mr Warner was not, in fact, the refuser, Lasana having this pesky penchant for not taking Jack at his word, other reporters buying wholesale the line about the money earned from the sales of local TV rights but Liburd demanding:

"Show me the money!" That is to say, let us see the break down on paper, what went where, chart this "development of local football" so that citizens can count, once and for all, how much money we owe Jack and, by the same token how much money Jack owes us, one of the central issues about Jack's continuing kingship over local football being a total absence of transparency, the secrecy of Mr Warner's Simpaul ownership a symptom of a system that leaves room for at least the suspicion of corruption.

So, as I said, in the context of all this I knew that there was a far greater chance of Minshall bringing a Carnival band this year than Liburd getting the World Cup nod from the T&TFF, the local football authority insisting in its very first correspondence on the issue that its decision was final. The question, then, you might want to ask is why, given this knowledge, did I submit his name? And the answer is simple? At 60 years old I have come to know that, in life, nothing should be taken for granted and, whatever my preconceived notions, I wasn't about to prejudge the fairness of or, to put it more bluntly, the extent of T&TFF victimisation.

Always at the back of my professional mind was the thought that my primary responsibility in this regard was to have a CCN presence in place to cover Trinidad and Tobago's historic adventure in FIFA's World Cup Finals on Germany. As a group we submitted four names to cover all our bases - including dropouts for reasons of illness, non-accreditation of this reporter and/or that reporter - or whatever - during the next few months and I was not about to pre-disaccredit Mr Liburd on the basis of my own expectations.

Not when not only, far from doing anything wrong, he had brought honour to the paper by refusing, over all these years, to wilt under the seductive power and, lately, the national popularity of the Jack, the nimble, Jack, the quick and Jack, the FIFA formidable.
