General Discussion / SoE breach caused shutdown of GOPIO forum
« on: September 06, 2011, 11:04:09 AM »
Saw this article in the Express over the weekend and was surprised no mention was made of it here.

Now looking for it to post but i can only find a broken link to the article:

http://www.trinidadexpress.com/news/Website_shut_down_after_warning_of_SoE_breach-129201163.html

Apparently the moderators of the GOPIO forum Jahaji Bai were contacted and warned regarding their content being in possible breach of the conditions of the SoE. From what i remembered of reading the article, the moderator's statement was that rather than face criminal charges, litigation or action they decided to shut down the forum

Along the lines of concerns about breaching of civil rights during these times, I think this is food for thought.

General Discussion / FBI organizes almost all terror plots in the US

FBI organizes almost all terror plots in the US

http://rt.com/usa/news/fbi-terror-report-plot-365/

The Federal Bureau of Investigation employs upwards of 15,000 undercover agents today, ten times what they had on the roster back in 1975.

If you think that’s a few spies too many — spies earning as much as $100,000 per assignment — one doesn’t have to go too deep into their track record to see their accomplishments. Those agents are responsible for an overwhelming amount of terrorist stings that have stopped major domestic catastrophes in the vein of 9/11 from happening on American soil.

Another thing those agents are responsible for, however, is plotting those very schemes.

The FBI has in recent years used trained informants not just to snitch on suspected terrorists, but to set them up from the get-go. A recent report put together by Mother Jones and the Investigative Reporting Program at the University of California-Berkley analyses some striking statistics about the role of FBI informants in terrorism cases that the Bureau has targeted in the decade since the September 11 attacks.

The report reveals that the FBI regularly infiltrates communities where they suspect terrorist-minded individuals to be engaging with others. Regardless of their intentions, agents are sent in to converse within the community, find suspects that could potentially carry out “lone wolf” attacks and then, more or less, encourage them to do so. By providing weaponry, funds and a plan, FBI-directed agents will encourage otherwise-unwilling participants to plot out terrorist attacks, only to bust them before any events fully materialize.

Additionally, one former high-level FBI officials speaking to Mother Jones says that, for every informant officially employed by the bureau, up to three unofficial agents are working undercover.

The FBI has used those informants to set-up and thus shut-down several of the more high profile would-be attacks in recent years. The report reveals that the Washington DC Metro bombing plot, the New York City subway plot, the attempt to blow up Chicago’s Sears Tower and dozens more were all orchestrated by FBI agents. In fact, reads the report, only three of the more well-known terror plots of the last decade weren’t orchestrated by FBI-involved agents.

The report reveals that in many of the stings, important meetings between informants and the unknowing participants are left purposely unrecorded, as to avoid any entrapment charges that could cause the case to be dismissed. Perhaps the most high-profile of the FBI-proposed plots was the case of the Newburgh 4. Around an hour outside of New York City, an informant infiltrated a Muslim community and engaged four local men to carry out a series of attacks. Those men may have never actually carried out an attack, but once the informant offered them a plot and a pair of missiles, they agreed. Defense attorneys cried “entrapment,” but the men still were sentenced to 25 years apiece.

"The problem with the cases we're talking about is that defendants would not have done anything if not kicked in the ass by government agents," Martin Stolar tells Mother Jones. Stolar represented the suspect involved in a New York City bombing plot that was set-up by FBI agents. "They're creating crimes to solve crimes so they can claim a victory in the war on terror." For their part, the FBI says this method is a plan for "preemption," "prevention" and "disruption."

The report also reveals that, of the 500-plus prosecutions of terrorism-related cases they analyzed, nearly half of them involved the use of informants, many of whom worked for the FBI in exchange for money or to work off criminal charges. Of the 158 prosecutions carried out, 49 defendants participated in plots that agent provocateurs arranged on behalf of the FBI.

Experts note that the chance of winning a terrorism-related trial, entrapment or not, is near impossible. "The plots people are accused of being part of — attacking subway systems or trying to bomb a building — are so frightening that they can overwhelm a jury," David Cole, a Georgetown University law professor, tells Mother Jones. Since 9/11, almost two-thirds of the cases linked to terrorism have ended with guilty pleas. “They don't say, 'I've been entrapped,' or, 'I was immature,’” a retired FBI official remarks.

All of this and those guilty pleas often stem for just being in the right place at the wrong time. Farhana Khera of the group Muslim Advocate notes that agents go into mosques on “fishing expeditions” just to see where they can get interest in the community. "The FBI is now telling agents they can go into houses of worship without probable cause," says Khera. "That raises serious constitutional issues."

From the set-up to the big finish, the whole sting operation is ripe with constitutional issues such as that. A decade since 9/11, however, the FBI is reaching through whatever means it can pull together to keep terrorists — or whom they think could someday become one — from ever hurting America.

President Obama to award George H.W. Bush the Presidential Medal of Freedom

By Kenneth R. Bazinet
White House Correspondent

Barack Obama will honor former President George H.W. Bush with the Medal of Freedom

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/2010/11/17/2010-11-17_president_obama_to_award_george_w_bush_the_presidential_medal_of_freedom_.html

President Obama dropped a bipartisan bombshell today, announcing he will award the Presidential Medal of Freedom next year to ex-President George H.W. Bush.

The magnanimous gesture of bestowing the nation’s highest civilian honor to the 41st U.S. President came a day after ex-President George W. Bush gave a respectful nod to Obama at the groundbreaking of his library in Dallas.

“The decisions of governing are on another President’s desk, and he deserves to make them without criticism from me,” Bush said at the site of his future library at Southern Methodist University.

NBA Hall of Famer Bill Russell, St. Louis (baseball) Hall of Famer Stan Musial, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Wall Street wizard Warren Buffett top the list of scholars, athletes, artists, achievers and do-gooders who will be presented the award at a White House ceremony early next year.

“These outstanding honorees come from a broad range of backgrounds and they’ve excelled in a broad range of fields, but all of them have lived extraordinary lives that have inspired us, enriched our culture, and made our country and our world a better place. I look forward to awarding them this honor,” Obama said.

The rest of the list includes civil rights activist Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), environmentalist John H. Adams, poet Maya Angelou, Holocaust survivor Gerda Weissmann Klein, optometrist murdered by the Taliban Dr. Tom Little, civil rights activist Sylvia Mendez, disabled rights advocate Ambassador Jean Kennedy Smith and former AFL-CIO President John J. Sweeney.

As bad as Muslimeen attack on Parliament

Deosaran calls for commission of enquiry into spying scandal:

By Ria Taitt Political Editor

http://www.trinidadexpress.com/news/As_bad_as_Muslimeen_attack_on_Parliament-107838494.html

Saying the "spying scandal was as bad as the Muslimeen attack on Parliament, in terms of its constitutional implications", criminologist and former independent senator Ramesh Deosaran yesterday called for a commission of enquiry into the matter.

In a statement sent exclusively to the Sunday Express, Deosaran said: "You cannot have illegal wiretapping of the President, a CJ, judges and Opposition politicians in a democracy and not have a full-scale commission of enquiry. This segment of our democratic way of life needs a full review and repositioning."

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, on Friday, revealed intelligence services had been used by the last administration for political wiretapping and to spy on a wide range of citizens, including President George Maxwell Richards; then chief justice, Sat Sharma, his wife and son; former commissioner of police James Philbert; and Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar.

Noting this illegal activity was sanctioned by the executive arm of the State, she revealed a list of names, including members of the judiciary, trade unionists, editors and journalists, media houses, radio talk show hosts, comedians, former Opposition MPs, Government ministers, sports personalities, businessmen, newspaper columnists, advertising executives, county councillors, lawyers and persons in the entertainment industry.

"Any use of interception of communications without the use of the people's consent through the Parliament is contrary to democracy...and is symptomatic of a creeping dictatorship," the Prime Minister said.

Deosaran said: "Given the serious attack which this spying scandal makes against the Constitution, Parliament and our democracy, and the confusing series of cross-talk, denials and excuses now facing the country, nothing short of a commission of enquiry into the matter will suffice. The political and constitutional implications are far too serious. The Government cannot properly move into new legislation (Interception of Communication Bill) on the back of anger, disgust and emotions. You need a sober period of fact-finding and reflection."

He said a commission of enquiry with a three-month deadline will help provide a reliable empirical basis for a well-balanced but effective set of laws to regulate and oversee electronic surveillance.

"We have to ensure that our security architecture is not purely for self-serving political advantage," Deosaran said.

He said he agreed with former CJ Sharma."This is like the Gestapo, the KGB and worse than Grenada's Eric Gairy's Mongoose Gang and Haiti's Duvalier's Ton Ton Macoute in its invasion of privacy and silent victimisation. Though a bloodless assault against our democracy, this spying scandal is as bad as the Muslimeen attack on Parliament in terms of its constitutional implications."

Deosaran said the police file should, therefore, be sent immediately to the Director of Public Prosecutions so as to restore public confidence in our security apparatus. It would be also in the public interest and to satisfy the rights of those affected to have the full list of wiretapped persons published now, he said.

"This is what happens when a party loses control over its leadership, when a Parliament has little or no control over the political executive and when the need for fuller transparency and accountability, through a stronger, reformed Parliament, has not been fulfilled for so many years," Deosaran stated.

Bloodied and shackled: Controversial cricket tycoon Allen Stanford beaten up by jail inmates as he awaits trial

Bloodied and bruised, this is the shocking picture of cricket tycoon Allen Stanford after a beating by jail inmates.

His neck in a brace, his eye bleeding and half-closed and his head bandaged.

The final humiliation for Stanford, 60, awaiting trial accused of masterminding a $7billion fraud, was his feet and hands were shackled as he was taken to hospital.

Attacked: The tycoon sits on a hospital trolley with his neck in a brace, his eye half-shut and a bandage wrapped around his head after the assault by jail prisoners in Texas

Shackled: Allen Stanford is bound hand and foot at the hospital near Houston

Once he posed with a perspex case containing $20million at Lord's cricket ground. after being hailed as the saviour of English cricket.

But that counted for nothing  at the private prison in Conroe near Houston, Texas, and the inmates sharing his cell.

'I was on the telephone and some of the other people in the cell didn't like it,' he told a friend who visited him, according to the Sunday Times.

'They said something to me and then two of them jumped me and kept punching me and kicking me in the head.

'I lost consciousness, but at one time I came round and grabbed one of them by the leg. That just set them off a again'.

The guards burst into the cell and shackled Stanford before taking him to a hospital where he underwent an operation while still chained up.
Stanford suffered fractures to his eye socket, cheek bones and severe bruising to his body.

He has lost all feeling in the right side of his face. No one has been punished for the attack and he spent three weeks in solitary confinement. before being moved to another prison.

The assault happened in October last year in a cell holding 14 other men. It was designed to hold eight inmates and at the time had no electricity, air conditioning and was in virtual darkness.

The friend claimed the inmates were 'on edge' with each other because of the cramped conditions.

Stanford, who faces 21 charges at his trial which begins in January, had made three requests to be moved to another prison.

His downfall began after he signed a deal with the England and Wales Cricket Board in June 2008 for five Twenty20 international matches between England and a West Indies all-star XI with a prize of $20 million.

He was caught flirting with the wives and girlfriends of England's cricketers and was seen to grab Emma Prior, wife of wicket-keeper Matt and pull her onto his lap before putting an arm round Alistair Cook's girlfriend.

An assessment of Stanford's health was prepared for a court by Victor Scarano, a forensic psychiatrist.

He wrote: 'Mr Stanford described himself as a breathing corpse with increased episodes of despair, hopelessness and helplessness'.

Football / Is Samuel Eto'o the world's best striker?
« on: November 05, 2010, 03:52:34 PM »
Is Samuel Eto'o the world's best striker?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/piersedwards/2010/11/six_months_ago_the_question.html

Piers Edwards

Six months ago the question couldn't have been asked but it's certainly relevant now following the coaching changes at Inter Milan, Diego Milito's recent absence and the goals, the endless goals: is there a better striker in the world right now than Samuel Eto'o?

The Cameroonian's goalscoring ability hasn't been in question since his Real Mallorca days but it was hidden under a bushel during Jose Mourinho's reign at the San Siro given the latter's preference for Milito to single-handedly spearhead this attack.

"When we had the chance to bring in Eto'o, I thought I could play 4-4-2 and 4-3-3," Mourinho has said. "I knew that in Europe you needed to be more balanced and Eto'o could give me that."

So the Portuguese bought the Indomitable Lion for his versatility which initially saw Eto'o deployed as Milito's partner before being withdrawn more and more onto the flanks until some were jokingly describing him as a full back.

It's impossible to knock the ploy though since Inter secured an historic treble - and Eto'o, for the record, says he's grateful for the unexpected modification to his game, one which displayed the depth of his footballing ability.

"I will never stop thanking Mourinho - he made me discover a different position," the 29-year-old has said. "I never imagined I could play there. He made me more complete and this gives me more security."

That said, the arrival of Rafa Benitez has unleashed the predatory beast that is the Douala-born destroyer, the man whose Barcelona spell brought 108 goals in 144 league games.

"With Mourinho we played on the counter-attack, with Benitez we press more and that's better for forwards because we win back the ball higher up the pitch and create more chances," Eto'o has said.

"For a forward it's important to play close to the goal. It's more complicated for me when playing on the wings."

Eto'o started out wide under Benitez but with greater freedom since he was largely relieved of his back-tracking duties and, with a point to prove after Cameroon's disappointing World Cup, the Indomitable Lion - 'I had a bad summer' - is back doing what he does best.

He's the leading scorer in both Serie A, with seven in nine, and the Champions League where he's red-hot - with seven in four. In his first game up front following Milito's injury, Eto'o bagged a hat-trick against Werder Bremen, and he's been there ever since.

And while the three-time African Footballer of the Year's finishing is impressing (not just the poacher's goals that were his bread-and-butter at Barca but also well-hit efforts from the edge of the box), so is his all-round game as well - particularly his movement and link-up play.

The weighting of Eto'o's passes are normally near-perfect, as his assists in the Champions League wins over Werder Bremen and Tottenham Hotspur showed.

His close control and first-touch are also world-class, able to kill a lengthy ball dropping over his shoulder (witness his sublime second against Bremen) or control any pass fired at him - as shown when scoring against Palermo or teeing up Dejan Stankovic in the 4-3 win at home to Spurs.

The Cameroonian gave a master class in the art of a forward in the first half of that match, making two and scoring two, the second a typical Eto'o strike where his run off the shoulder of the last defender was timed to perfection.

At White Hart Lane on Tuesday, Harry Redknapp's perfectly-executed tactics ensured Tottenham's midfield cut the crucial supply lines to Eto'o but the insatiable forward still brought Inter back into a match where they were over-run, scoring a beauty out of nothing to set Spurs hearts racing.

To be the world's best out-and-out striker at present, the Inter star would clearly have to be better than the usual cast. So is he?

For my money, the only man who can rival him at present is another African - Didier Drogba, whose form (like Eto'o's) has been unaffected by this summer's World Cup and who's bagged seven goals so far while creating another six.

Although their styles differ - one a battering ram of brute force strength who is good in the air and on the deck, the other a smaller more lithe version with a greater element of finesse - their unerring eye for goal is as good as their form this season.

The same cannot be said of other big names - David Villa and Diego Forlan - who are suffering a World Cup hangover, while recent pretenders to the throne of the world's best forward have dropped off: see Wayne Rooney and Fernando Torres.

There is of course another man who's flying even if Cristiano Ronaldo is not an out-and-out striker, playing more central these days admittedly but in the hole behind Gonzalo Higuain. The winker kept Madrid in the title hunt last season, on his own at times, and he's picked up where he left off in La Liga, netting 11 in nine.

Lionel Messi has also been banging in the goals for Barcelona (12 now) despite not being at his best, fatigue seemingly taking its toll, but the Argentinian is another who cannot really be considered as a pointman.

Across Europe, there are dozens of strikers in good form (Nicolas Anelka and Fernando Llorente to name but two) but I guess the question, in true pub banter style, is this: if you had to choose a striker to convert a chance upon which your life depended, who would it be? I know mine.

Rowley rips into Kamla over storm 'shutdown'

http://www.trinidadexpress.com/news/Rowley_rips_into_Kamla_over_storm__shutdown_-106388748.html

OPPOSITION Leader Keith Rowley has accused the government of "over-reacting" to Tropical Storm Tomas, saying Friday's nationwide shutdown cost the country more than a storm would have.

Speaking at the People's National Movement (PNM) Women's League seminar at Balisier House, Port of Spain, yesterday morning, Rowley was critical of Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar's handling of the storm warnings but assured the gathering that he was in no way "anti-woman".

Rowley said the entire country was shut down "because of a cloud".

Meteorological warnings early Friday that Trinidad and Tobago was possibly in the path of Tomas resulted in schools, public offices and most businesses being closed by midday, on Persad-Bissessar's advice.

Many events planned for later that night were also cancelled, including a number of Divali celebrations at constituency offices, community grounds and private businesses.

Around 9.30 p.m. Friday, Persad-Bissessar also led several government ministers in a press conference, which was televised live, to assure citizens that the emergency gears were ready to turn should the night bring severely adverse weather conditions.

By that time, the Meteorological Office at Piarco had advised that while Trinidad was not in line with the eye of the storm, it could still feel the effects of the system's "feeder bands". Tobago was said to have been in greater danger.

Rowley, who began by saying he was one of many who assumed yesterday's seminar had been cancelled, said he hopes never to see a repeat of Friday's shutdown.

"When I say that because there is a woman in charge, things will automatically go right, I don't want you to think it is because I am anti-woman," Rowley said, stating previously that he was speaking as a husband and father of two daughters, of whom he thought highly.

"But the country was shut down since yesterday morning because we overreacted to a cloud."

Stating that it was a "governance issue", Rowley went on to accuse the Government of using the recent floods around the country to "play themselves" before the public as do-gooders.

He then said that had there been good governance, the staff of the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM), would not have been humiliated by the Government, with some staff later leaving in disgrace.

Many new staff members, in their efforts to please the government, he said, also overreacted on Friday.

"In their desperation to please, they shut the country down since yesterday morning, causing millions of dollars in losses—more than what would have been caused by a storm," Rowley said.

He also said business professionals should use their judgment and not be taken by the drama that occurred on Friday, in their efforts to pander to politicians.

Rowley added that his constituency, Diego Martin West, was particularly displeased at having to cancel a fund-raiser that was being held by the charity group, Friends of Diego Martin West.

The event included an excursion on a small sailing vessel into the Gulf of Paria on Friday night but was put off after they were warned not to go far from the Port.

"We suffered losses," Rowley said, later adding:

"I hope that every time it looks like it's going to rain we will not shut the country down and be subjected to a 20-minute speech by the Prime Minister, who clearly is not in charge of the situation."

Football / Spaniards dominate FIFA Ballon d'Or shortlist
« on: October 27, 2010, 02:31:09 PM »
No Diego Milito but Gyan in there  ???

I would give it to either Iniesta or Sneijder if it was up to me.

Spaniards dominate FIFA Ballon d'Or shortlist

http://msn.foxsports.com/foxsoccer/europe/story/Spaniards-dominate-Ballon-dOr-shortlist

Seven players from Spain's World Cup-winning team including Barcelona trio Andres Iniesta, David Villa and Xavi Hernandez were nominated Tuesday for the 2010 FIFA Ballon d'Or world player of the year award.

The 23-man list also has three players who starred both at the World Cup and for their club last season: Golden Ball winner Diego Forlan of Uruguay and Europa League winner Atletico Madrid; Wesley Sneijder of runner-up the Netherlands and European champion Inter Milan; and Thomas Mueller of Germany and Bayern Munich, who was top scorer and voted best young player in South Africa.

The past two winners - Lionel Messi of Argentina and Barcelona and Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal and Real Madrid - are nominated despite disappointing World Cup campaigns.

"Hopefully the trophy will remain in Barcelona," Messi told France Football magazine. "I hope it will be for one of ours."

Six players from Barcelona - Daniel Alves, Iniesta, Messi, Carles Puyol, Xavi and Villa, who joined the Catalan outfit from Valencia - are in the shortlist.

Barcelona retained the Spanish title last season with Messi scoring 34 goals to finish as the league's top scorer. Messi scored 47 goals in all competitions and won the Golden Boot, a prize awarded to Europe's top marksman.

"Of course I would be happy to win the Ballon d'Or for a second straight year," Messi said. "But I think the World Cup will weigh a lot in the balance."

Messi failed to score a single goal at the World Cup in South Africa, where Argentina lost 4-0 to Germany in the quarterfinals.

The 23 players nominated all took part in the World Cup while nine of them played the Champions League final won by Inter over Bayern Munich.

The 2007 winner Kaka is left off the list, which includes of his Brazil teammates Daniel Alves of Barcelona, and Inter Milan pair Julio Cesar and Maicon.

Chelsea's Ivory Coast forward Didier Drogba and Arsenal's Spanish midfielder Cesc Fabregas are among the three English Premier League players nominated while no English, French or Italian players are shortlisted.

The award, formerly known as the FIFA World Player of the Year, is being staged jointly for the first time by FIFA and France Football magazine, which first presented the original Ballon d'Or in 1956.

Votes will be cast by captains and head coaches of men's and women's national teams plus invited journalists.

A top-three shortlist will be announced Dec. 6, and the winner named at a ceremony in Zurich on Jan. 10.

Among the 10 candidates for the women's world player award are Brazil's Marta and Germany's Birgit Prinz, who have combined to win the past seven titles.

Awards for the best men's and women's coach will be made for the first time.

Spain's Vicente del Bosque is competing for the men's honor with nine rivals including Oscar Tabarez of World Cup semifinalist Uruguay and Jose Mourinho, who won the Champions League with Inter Milan before joining Real Madrid.

The women's list contains Maren Meinert, who led Germany to the Women's Under-20 World Cup title in July, and Albertin Montoya of FC Gold Pride, champion of the United States' Women's Professional Soccer league.

At the January gala, FIFA also will announce a World XI team in conjunction with the FIFPro group of players' unions, the Puskas Award for most beautiful goal of the year, a presidential award and a prize for fair play.

Google to digitize Dead Sea Scrolls

http://www.zdnet.com/news/google-to-digitize-dead-sea-scrolls/476700

The Israel Antiquities Authority has tapped Google to digitize the famous Dead Sea scrolls, some of the oldest documents ever discovered chronicling the early years of Christianity.

CNN reports that Google will be responsible for scanning the 900 manuscripts, which are comprized of more than 30,000 fragments discovered in caves around Israel in the 1940s and 1950s.

Israeli researchers have come to worry about the ability of the scrolls to endure further photography, as exposure to light and air has a negative effect on the paper. Google will use spectral and infrared scanning techniques to make a digital copy of the scrolls, which will then be made available to the public online, according to the report.

Google was sued in 2005 for scanning 20th-century books with unexpired copyrights, and a final approval of that settlement with groups representing authors and publishers is still pending before a US judge. The issue of unexpired copyright is unlikely to be a problem with the Dead Sea scrolls, which date from between 150BC and 70AD.

Cagliari have been fined 25,000 euros (£22,000) over the racist chanting directed at Inter Milan striker Samuel Eto'o during Sunday's Serie A clash.

The match was temporarily stopped after only three minutes because of the level of abuse aimed at Eto'o.

The referee spoke to both captains while a stadium announcer warned fans that the game could be abandoned if the chanting continued.

The Cameroon striker went on to score the only goal in Inter's 1-0 victory.

Former Barcelona star Eto'o no longer takes his family to watch him play in Italy because of the racist chanting.

Meanwhile, AS Roma were fined 10,000 euros (£8,800) after a fan shone a laser into the eyes of an assistant referee during Saturday's 2-1 win over Genoa.

Ajax's Evander Sno suffers heart attack during match

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/teams/c/celtic/8995971.stm

Former Celtic and Bristol City winger Evander Sno has suffered a heart attack in a reserve match between his club Ajax and Vitesse Arnhem on Monday.

The 23-year-old had to be revived three times with a defibrillator after collapsing on the pitch.

A statement on the Ajax website said the player was conscious and responding to doctors in hospital in Arnhem.

"Fortunately our doctor and physio were there quickly," Ajax coach Albert van der Dussen told Dutch newspaper AD.

"They have performed an heroic act and saved his life, he was very lucky."

Sno fell to the ground 18 minutes after coming on as a half-time substitute in Monday's game and was treated on the pitch for more than 10 minutes before finally coming round.

"He looked surprised to see all those people there," added Van der Dussen. "I don't think he realised what was going on but everyone was greatly relieved.

"The ambulance crew then took over and took him to hospital."

The Netherlands Under-21 player - who began his career with Feyenoord, before a loan spell with NAC Breda and two years with Celtic - spent most of the 2009/10 season on loan at Bristol City before returning to Amsterdam to push for a place in the Ajax first team.

France World Cup squad suspended for Norway friendly

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/8849972.stm

The French Football Federation has suspended all 23 members of France's World Cup squad for their next game.

New France coach Laurent Blanc requested that no member of the squad be selected for a friendly against Norway in Oslo on 11 August.

France failed to win any of their three group games in South Africa.

The campaign included players boycotting training in support of Nicolas Anelka, who was sent home for insulting coach Raymond Domenech.

The sanction means France's opening qualifier for Euro 2012, at home to Belarus on 3 September, will be the first opportunity for any of the 23 to feature in a Blanc squad.

Blanc said: "I obviously cannot act as if nothing had happened in South Africa.

"I followed the events with sadness, I was disappointed with the sporting results and I was shocked by certain behaviours.

"I will integrate these elements into my analysis and my thoughts. I always had the principles, rules of conduct and not just in my sporting life. They have not changed and I will not change."

The crisis that engulfed Domenech's last tournament as national coach resulted in the resignation of FFF president Jean-Pierre Escalettes, with his successor due to be unveiled on Friday.

The one-day training strike, on 20 June, came after Chelsea forward Anelka was sent home from the tournament following a heated exchange with Domenech at half-time during the defeat to Mexico on 17 June.

France captain Patrice Evra accused a "traitor" within the party of leaking details of Anelka's rant to the media and of destabilising the squad, and the skipper was then seen arguing with fitness coach Robert Duverne at the start of the scheduled training session.

Duverne stormed off the training ground and the players headed for their bus and refused to train, leaving Domenech to read a statement to the press on their behalf.

Former France defenders Lilian Thuram and Marcel Desailly called for Evra to be banned from national team duty over his part in the insurrection, and Escalettes took a similar stance.

But Blanc said upon his unveiling as Domenech's successor: "It is not for me to decide on sanctions. I am not the bogeyman. If I consider they are the best players in their position, I will take them."

Goalkeeper Hugo Lloris has admitted that the decision to strike was "completely stupid".

The Lyon star told French sports newspaper L'Equipe: "We acted as a team. To strike was the decision of a squad who felt lonely, who believed that no-one had stood up for them and who had a message to convey.

"We went too far. It was a very awkward decision, a big mistake. It was completely stupid. But there were so many problems.

"We all want to improve the image of Les Bleus. We must make all possible effort, give everything. It's important for us.

"We must go back to basics - respect for the jersey, of course, the team and the institution of France.

"We have a great desire that what happened in South Africa should not happen again, that there should be no self-destruction like that any more."

Meanwhile Fernand Duchaussoy has been named as the FFF's interim president.

President of the Ligue du Football Amateur since 2005, the 67-year-old Fernand Duchaussoy succeeds Jean-Pierre Escalettes, whose resignation was accepted at a 2 July 2 meeting of the federation's federal council but stayed on until a successor could be found.

Ryanair To Launch 'Seatless Flying'

http://www.conworld.net/index.php/Industry/ryanair-to-launch-seatless-flying.html

Seatless-FlyingBudget airline Ryanair has said it will introduce ‘standing-room only’ areas on its flights.

The low cost carrier has announced proposals to install new ‘vertical seats’ on a range of short haul flights within the next two years.

Speaking on UK Television, Ryanair chief executive Michael O’Leary said that the initative forms part of a wider plan to revolutionise budget air travel and change passenger behaviour.

The "seats", which will allow passengers to be ‘strapped in’ while standing up, have drawn criticism from the UK's Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), which has raised doubts over whether they would pass safety tests.

Ryanair spokesperson Stephen McNamara said: "We are very confident that the seats can pass safety tests. Boeing can put a man on the moon so I am sure they are able to make these a success".

The airline has promised that the new seats will adhere to all current safety regulations which apply to normal aircraft seating.

Passengers would still wear a seat belt which would go over their shoulder in a similar style to the type of seats often used by cabin crew during flights.

Ryanair hope to fund the changes to the cabin by charging passengers £1 to use the toilet during flights.

To make way for the vertical seats Ryanair is considering removing two toilets from the back of the aircraft and a number of rows of standard seats to accommodate around 40 to 50 extra people per flight.

Though unconventional, research by the airline showed that the public would consider flying in the new seats - as long as it was cheaper than flying normally.

"We polled about 120,000 passengers, 80,000 said they would consider the seats if they were free, 42 per cent said they would use the seats if the fare was half that of a traditional seat," McNamara added.

"The appeal of doing this is that it makes costs lower for the airline, and hopefully we can pass those savings over to the passengers, so fares will come down."

Man Killed By Family For Watching World Cup On TV

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/06/17/man-killed-by-family-for-_n_616199.html

JOHANNESBURG — Police say a South African man who wanted to watch a World Cup match instead of a religious program was beaten to death by his family in the northeastern part of the country.

David Makoeya, a 61-year-old man from the small village of Makweya, Limpopo province, fought with his wife and two children for the remote control on Sunday because he wanted to watch Germany play Australia in the World Cup. The others, however, wanted to watch a gospel show.

"He said, 'No, I want to watch soccer,'" police spokesman Mothemane Malefo said Thursday. "That is when the argument came about.

"In that argument, they started assaulting him."

Malefo said Makoeya got up to change the channel by hand after being refused the remote control and was attacked by his 68-year-old wife Francina and two children, 36-year-old son Collin and 23-year-old daughter Lebogang.

Malefo said he was not sure what the family used to kill Makoeya.

"It appears they banged his head against the wall," Malefo said. "They phoned the police only after he was badly injured, but by the time the police arrived the man was already dead."

All three were arrested Sunday night, but Lebogang was released on $200 bail Tuesday, Malefo said. The other two are still being held in custody.

Malefo said the mother and son will reappear in the local Seshego Magistrates Court on July 27.

"He was always a happy man, never violent," Makoeya's nieces, Miriam and Anna, told the Daily Sun newspaper. "On Saturday, we saw him the last time at a funeral."

The World Cup, being played in Africa for the first time, started Friday and runs through July 11. Although most the tickets for the 64-game tournament have been sold, many in South Africa are too poor to attend matches.

France on brink of implosion as Henry and Diaby selections split entire squad

http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/news/World-Cup-France-on-brink-of-implosion-as-Thierry-Henry-and-Abou-Diaby-selections-split-entire-squad-ahead-of-Uruguay-opener-article454661.html

France's World Cup plans have been thrown into turmoil by divisions within their squad over whether Thierry Henry should start against Urguguay tomorrow.

Senior French players, led by Nicolas Anelka and Franck Ribery, have put pressure on coach Raymond Domenech to include Henry ahead of Sidney Govou, and Abou Diaby in place of Yoann Gourcuff.

Those players pressing for Henry's inclusion from the start in the Group A opener in Cape Town claim the former Arsenal forward's experience and presence demands he is named in France's starting line-up.

Although Henry remains France's record goalscorer, the 32-year-old became a peripheral player at Barcelona last season and can no longer rely on being an automatic choice for his country.

The disharmony within the French ranks is said to be such that Anelka refused to pass to Gourcuff in a recent friendly against Costa Rica, while Ribery allegedly took the ball from the young Bordeaux star as he prepared to take a free-kick.

France midfielder Jeremy Toulalan admitted relationships were strained among some of the players within the squad, but insisted it did not mean Domenech's players would not be able to perform effectively in South Africa.

"In any time your relationships with certain people can be much stronger than with others," said Lyon midfielder Toulalan. "But on the pitch you don't have to the best friends in the world to play with somebody."

France full-back Eric Abidal, one of those who has supported the inclusion of his Barcelona team-mate Henry, said: "We can try and put our ideas together and try and find a middle ground but in the end it's the manager who decides."

And Arsenal defender Bacary Sagna admitted no amount of player pressure on Domenech would force the famously stubborn coach to change his mind about what his starting line-up should be.

Domenech sprung a major shock when he refused to include Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema and Arsenal playmaker Samir Nasri in his final 23-man squad, while also resisting calls from senior players to recall veteran midfielder Patrick Vieira, now at Manchester City.

"There is no debate," said Abidal. "The coach has to make his decisions and everyone has to accept it. We can maybe give him some advice or help but, even if we were to offer it, I don't think he would listen. The most important thing is the team."

France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris has warned his team-mates they will come unstuck in their World Cup opener against Uruguay - just as they did in 2002 in losing to Senegal - if they underestimate their South American opponents.

"We must be wary of the whole Uruguay team," said Lloris. "For us, the most important thing is to take our game and provide the means to win. We know the importance of this first game."

France have not had the most impressive of World Cup build-ups in terms of results, losing 1-0 to China last Friday, having come from behind to beat Costa Rica 2-1 and only managing a 1-1 draw with Tunisia in their previous warm-up games.

But Lloris said those results would have no bearing on how France perform in South Africa. "They're warm-up matches," said Lloris. "They're there to make mistakes. The most important thing is to do the basics well, to analyse things and make improvements immediately in the next game.

"Today, in the squad, everyone is saying the same thing - everyone has the same ideas and the same goal. We know where we're going. What we need to improve is our efficiency in the final 35 metres, the final pass, what choice to make.

"Even though everyone is aware that there are still areas for improvement in the group, the atmosphere is good. The group is serene and confident. We will need everyone. In this kind of competition, matches are won not by 11 players but by 23."

Chelsea and France winger Flourent Malouda said: "We have to create links between players. We can't just think: 'I'm not interested in what others do'. We're going to look ridiculous if, as we did at Euro 2008, each player stays in his comfort zone aiming only for good marks from the media to the detriment of the team."
