The European transfer window shut yesterday, preceded by a month-long flurry of activity. Socawarriors.net would like to know which signing you think will prove the best piece of business.

Among the innumerable players on the move were David Beckham, Cuauhtemoc Blanco, Mario Bolatti, Sol Campbell, Hernan Crespo, Landon Donovan, Giovani dos Santos, Theofanis Gekas, Eidur Gudjohnson, Thomas Hitzlsperger, Robbie Keane, Maxi Lopez, Alvaro Recoba, Roberto Carlos, Robinho, Eduardo Salvio, Jose Sosa, David Suazo, Luca Toni, Vagner Love, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Andriy Voronin and Amr Zaki.

Maybe your top choice involves one of the aforementioned players; maybe not. Perhaps it was completed by a European club; perhaps one from elsewhere.

So, it's over to you: Who was the best signing? Simply let us know

Terry gets backing from squad

John Terry has received a series of morale-boosting telephone calls and texts from England squad members in offers of support.

John Terry: Under pressure.
EmpicsJohn Terry: Under pressure.

• Terry embroiled in affair scandal
• Terry will keep England captaincy
• Bridge "couldn't stand ... Terry"
• Bridge to get call-up if fit

As soon as the Terry scandal broke, the immediate feeling was that England players would be so incensed that they would want Terry ousted as England captain - now Soccernet has uncovered the fact that some players are privately supporting Terry.

The supportive text messages and calls have given Terry, tearful after he scored the winner for Chelsea at the weekend, his first moment of encouragement since the whole sordid episode broke in the media after a "super injunction" to suppress the scandal was overturned by a High Court judge.

Soccernet has discovered that Terry has long seen part of his role as England captain being to help players when they have needed it, and that players now feel it is "payback time" and they have texted and called to offer Terry their support.

Terry is grateful but feels that all the communications he has received from inside the camp must remain private to the extent that he will not divulge who has been in touch or what they have said to him.

That is not to say that the players don't have sympathy for Wayne Bridge, they do, but there appears to be less animosity toward Terry than perhaps expected, if indeed there was any in the first place.

Fabio Capello's trusted aid Franco Baldini has also been in touch with some of the senior England players to gauge their reaction, and has received a similar response.

None of the players are suggesting that Terry needs to be stripped of the captaincy, or that he has lost the their respect within the camp. That will be a vital ingredient in saving Terry from the axe as England captain, if indeed, that is the final decision of Capello, who returns to his desk on Thursday morning after a long lay-off recuperating from major knee surgery.

Capello then flies to Warsaw for the European Championship draw, when he will be quizzed about Terry and Bridge, but the Italian coach is in no mood to be rushed because of any media agenda into making an early decision.

Capello will want to speak to Terry in person, and might wish to see the consequences of the situation when the players meet up on March 1 for the friendly with Egypt.

The timetable for a decision, and, of course, the decision itself, rests purely with Capello, with the FA hierarchy already giving their blessing to whatever the outcome might be. But Soccernet's understanding is that Capello is not even being advised to strip Terry of the captaincy from within FA circles, as has been suggested over the past few days.

Phil Hall, Terry's spokesman, said: "John Terry asked me to make it clear that he has made absolutely no statement about his future as England captain.

"He is keeping his own counsel until he speaks to England manager Fabio Capello and then Mr Capello will decide what announcement will be made.''

MEP that is some real jack%$# comments about myself to blame. Yuh lucky ah know you well Mr Pittsburgh  ;D Anyone would try to provide assistance to a situation they felt compelled to do so. I provided help and it was not needed. There is no scene in that. My point to Eldoman(He is another brother I know well from WV ) was don't judge me about we and us when you don't know what I have done to assist the women's game in TNT. I understand all that garbage philosophy about wha he really want? he feel because he coaching in de states he better dan we......had you been non trini I'm sure they would have been more receptive to your offer. I have long moved on and have been doing my thing here in the US.

Eldo you must only speak of the things that you are aware of. Let me give your some history lessons. Almost 6 years ago I made a visit to Trini and while I was there I had a chance to see the youth and senior women's team play.I was watching my national team with some players not even wearing the same uniform. They didn't have tape or wrap for the players to tape their ankles etc. I offered to assist the women's program by paying for their uniforms for three years, I offered to send them equipment. I gave the present coaching staff all of my information to contact me when I returned to the US. They never did and when when I tried to contact them there was no responses. I offered assistance to Jack Warner to host national teams here in the US for next to nothing where they would have place to stay fields to train on etc and nothing. A group of us met with Lincoln Phillips at a coaches convention here in the US and offered to help the programs back home. Since that meeting nothing came out of it. I took a team to Trinidad a few years ago to give them some quality games. I turned up at the game and Lincoln who was there to watch the game asked me what I was doing home. He didn't even know it was my team they were playing after we had talked in length. Then to add insult to injury he says to Marlon "we need to get him more involved and Marlon acknowledge he knew me wel from Coaching school days blah blah blahl. In 2008 when Randy Waldrum was looking for North American players I assisted him.We met in Trinidad and expressed a strategy to pull it off. They know who I am and they don't seek my assistance. The USSF have given me a role to help identify and work with their youth players as well as scout for them. Its a role I have been doing now for the past 11 years. So you don't know the predicament this puts me in. I have a vested interest in the US program and care deeply about the work that I am doing at the same time I want to see Trini do well even though they don't care about the assistance I would like to offer. It further aggravates me when I know the trini team has a foundation to build on and its not happening. The last time I checked this is forum to express yourself. So I can come on here and express myself brother. Doh len meh call yuh boy berris for yuh :rotfl:

I agree with you Triples. I believe it always starts with us as coaches. I have always used the philosophy of when my teams win its my players doing when they lose its my fault. This is another reason why we will continue to struggle in Trini. As a staff you must be able to correctly analyze and evaluate your team so you can make the necessary steps to move forward in a progressive way.

It is the coaches responsibility to get the team ready. You can't blame lack of fitness and fighting spirit on the players. WE ARE RESPONSIBLE TO CREATE THOSE ENVIRONMENT CONSISTENTLY IN TRAINING. Before the event began they staff felt the owl was ready to take down canaries. This team was doomed from the start. The things that I saw from them are areas of the game that have not been addressed enough during the past 5 years for them to be successful at an international level

137
The result of the tournament don't surprise me one bit. The hispanic countries have caught up us and Canada, due to their commitment to their overall player development. Their players are technically and tactically proficient and are now very deadly on dead ball set pieces. They are playing with a technical and tactical sophistication that we sometimes lack in our play here in the US. I expected Sydney to lead us as was stated in my previous post before this event started. However, the US, Canada and Trinidad have to return to to drawing board.  Trini can take a page from Mexico and Columbia.

I must admit though I am eager to see the U-17's. I am very interested to see the work Pellers have been doing with them.

WPS discontinues operations of Los Angeles Sol
by WPS - Press Release
01/28/2010 - 03:47 p.m.

Dispersal Draft Scheduled for Next Week

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (January 28, 2009) – After several weeks of negotiations with a potential new ownership group fell through at the last minute, Women’s Professional Soccer discontinued operations of the Los Angeles Sol on Thursday. The rights to the 19 players currently held by the Sol will be dispersed during a special draft for the league’s eight franchises on Thursday, February 4 and will be announced later in the day.

“While it’s regrettable to lose the Los Angeles market as part of our WPS footprint, we are pleased to have two new teams coming into the league in 2010,” said WPS Commissioner Tonya Antonucci. “The league and our ownership committee worked incredibly hard over the past month to complete the transaction. In the end, we ran out of time and came up short of where we needed to be funding-wise for the Sol in 2010.”

"It is a sad day for the franchise, staff, players and fans," said General Manager and Acting Head Coach Charlie Naimo.  "Until I see our players on other rosters I will continue to work for the organization. This is a very special group of players and I know they will be successful wherever they go. On behalf of our entire staff, we want to thank AEG and WPS for a great 2009."

The Los Angeles Sol had been under custody of the league since late November when AEG gave back its ownership stake in the team to the league.

“Ownership changes are part of pro sports, particularly in a young league, and we have made solid progress in growing WPS from where we were last season,” said Antonucci. “We believe Los Angeles is a healthy, viable market for women’s pro soccer and a city where our league can again thrive with an LA franchise in the future.”

The league will now feature an even eight-team, single table format for the 2010 WPS Regular Season with more details of the 2010 WPS Season to be unveiled next week.

“All the team owners and members of the Board are confident that this setback will be quickly overcome by the exciting developments that the league has in store for the 2010 WPS Season,” said WPS Board Member and Atlanta Beat Chairman T. Fitz Johnson. “This includes two new franchises, the debut of a brand new stadium built specifically for WPS, a longer regular season and an even better product on the field with incoming talent from the college ranks and the many top internationals that have been signed in the off-season.  Without question, this season is poised to build on our successful launch year.”

Several of the Los Angeles players, including WPS All-Stars Shannon Boxx and Marta, are signed to multi-year, guaranteed contracts, and are expected to play in WPS for the remainder of their contracts with other WPS teams following the dispersal draft.

"I cannot tell you how heartbroken I am to hear of the news of the Sol," said Sol goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc.  "I am sad for myself, my teammates, the organization and for LA as we will not get to play in front of our home crowd and be in this amazing area.  I have truly come to love LA.  I know we all still have hope until the dispersal draft that a miracle will happen. If not, thank you to the fans and everyone who supported and believed in us as you've made permanent memories in all our hearts."

The dispersal draft will be held Thursday, February 4 with the eight franchises selecting players from the Sol roster over three rounds in the following order: :-\ :-\

Elan boy ah  cosign on that one. Triples I am actually familiar with all these programs. This is partly why we have issues in the American culture. I have been coaching in the US now for the past 20 years and have seen it all as a club, ODP college and US national team coach. Soccer is driven by brand name, winning and money in this country and as much as we talk about player development its not happening at the level it should be occurring. Having all these programs is one thing being able to attract quality coaches is another. All these programs are driven by the dollar. So as a result I have always been skeptical of the majority of them. Those thousands of players you speak of with strong skill set just don't exist. Maybe you meant thousands of players with a god feel for the game. You have to be very careful when you throw around that term. For the past 10 years I have been working with the majority of elite players in this country and many of them are lacking in various skill sets. There are presently 10 of them in Guatemala. Amber Brooks who was the captain of the U17 team that lost to Korea in the U17 World Cup finals shared with me when she returned. "All these years you have been telling me about how important it was for me to further develop my technical ability. I saw it first hand at the world cup how much we are behind the worlds elite teams technically."Over the years they have gotten better but when they first came to us at the age of 12 or 13 they okay and they represented some of the best players in the country.

Trini has a chance to do it right with the little we have. Trini can only focus on what they have control over so i say  make the very best out of what you have. Where was Mexico, Jamaica, Costa Rica and Guatemala just to name a few, 20 years ago. My first experience with women's football in Trinidad was when I was playing for John-D in the early 90's. There is definitely something they are doing that we are not.

I also can't buy the physical component argument. You speak of our national teams like if they are these behemoths. Let me give you some facts starting with our back line Rachel, Vicki and Dunn are barely above 5 4". Tony is the only giant back there. Our average height in MF is 5'6" Cristine, Teresa and Zakiya average around 5'5" With Zaki being around 5'1" Up front Sydney is the Giant with Maya Tiff is barely 5'7". I don't want to go through every player on our roster. However, this is actually one of the smaller teams we have brought to CONCACAF event. So to think that we are way bigger than the Trini girls is incorrect. I might even be willing to give the Trini starting 11 the height advantage over our national team starting 11. However, I don't have all the stats on the trini girls so don't quote me on that one ;D.Some of the same cultural issues you speak of with body shape evolved through training is the same issues we have here.

Now if you said we may be physically stronger I will agree with that based on the fitness and strength training regiment that these girls undergo with their college teams as well as our national team strength trainer. If you spoke about our overall diet giving us an edge. If you spoke about the benefits our sport psychologist brings that gives us an edge, I would agree with you. But to just throw out numbers with weight and height is mis-leading.

I am not sure where I gave this impression base on your quote as for the idea that to take advantage of opportunities to play tougher competition when available is not good enough,. I do believe that Trini should take advantage of tougher competition and some of the elite tournaments we have here in the US would be a great tool for that. I provided this idea in previous forums many months ago.

TRIPLE you can teach a 15 year old to play a direct style. We have done it quite a few times with our youth players. I am not quite sure about teaching it at the ages you speak of though. To the coaches you know who are doing it at age 8. I wish them fire and brim stone because it makes my work harder by the time those kids get to me and other youth coaches. Some of the things you speak of that is occurring in the US is actually a detriment to the game. Think about it for a minute. It takes thousands of hours of proper repetition to develop proper technique. The majority of our elite teams here train once maybe twice a week if the kids are lucky but spend quite a bit of time doing 8 to 10 tournaments a year where the majority of players average 80 minutes a weekend. So believe me as much as you speak of the level of competition which is certainly a benefit. We have been losing our ground on the world stage because the international teams we are competing against are spending more time training and experiencing more repetition than we are here in the US. The level of competition the kids are exposed to help develop their level of competitiveness and the speed at which they play. However, technically and tactically our youth teams are now behind the top teams in Asia, Europe and South America. Pia has been addressing this with the senior team and I am seeing the changes. The edge we still have in the youth game is in the areas of our speed and athleticism. Our fitness level is no longer an edge. The international players also watch the game more than we do in the US. The women's teams that are on the rise all have elite mens team. They study them and learn from them. They develop their tendencies

How does all of this relate to Trini women's football This is one of the things I would like to see occur in the Trinidad. Lets maximize what we have instead of focusing on what we don't have. Get these kids at an early age and focus on their overall technical development through lots of repetition. All the while increasing the intensity and pressure on the ball so they become more comfortable executing these technical areas when they are in game situations. So when they are more equipped technically at a young age we could then address the tactical areas of the game when they are ready.

From my personal experience, I have found some trini youth players to be more game savy than our US youth national team players because they watch the game more and feed off the male players when they play against them. I noticed this from playing against them when I brought my american college teams to trini in the past or from working with them here in the US. I know, I know we don't have enough quality teams for competition sake tra la la la la.

These girls struggle with the speed of the game and their inability to handle the pressure on the ball. I have seen many of Marlon and Shabazz sessions  and its too relax. THESE GIRLS NEED TO BE CONSTANTLY PLACED IN AN ENVIRONMENT WHERE THERE IS IMMEDIATE PRESSURE ON THE BALL AND THEY MUST EXECUTE LIMITED TOUCHES TO EXECUTE THEIR TECHNIQUE. WHEN THEY GET TO AN INTERNATIONAL EVENT YOU CAN TELL THAT THEY ARE NOT ACCUSTOMED TO THE BEING PUT UNDER PRESSURE SO THEY SOLVE PRESSURE BY KICKING THE BALL AWAY. They must be exposed to quality teams when the opportunities arises. I know I know Jack and they are not providing that opportunity. Well then keep playing against better boys teams until those international games come along. As you all know its all about time and space. The more time and space you have on the ball the more successful you will be. Its an area of the game we need to keep focusing on
