Zika is here, but don't panic

Trinidad and Tobago has confirmed its first case of Zika, the mosquito-borne disease linked to birth defects in babies, which is causing global alarm.

The sobering announcement was made this afternoon by Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh.

Speaking at a Rapid Response mosquito eradication exercise in the community of Penal Rock Road, Deyalsingh said : “At 2.30p.m. today the first case of the Zika virus was confirmed. Laboratory (tests) confirmed the case (through) CARPHA (The Caribbean Public Health Agency). A 61-year-old female who recently travelled to New Zealand”.

He said new Zealand is not known to have Zika cases, and how the woman contracted the virus was unknown. Deyalsingh said this was being investigated, and the area in which the woman lives would be: “looked at. She would be looked at to make sure she recovers proberly from the virus”.

Deyalsingh said the woman first exhibited symptoms on February 10, and on February 12, a sample was taken and sent for testing by CARPHA.

Regarding concerns that the Zika could be a life threatening public health issue, he said “what you do not want from Zika is panic. Please keep it in perspective. The comment ‘if Zika reach the area, we will die’ please! This is a non-political issue! I plead not to make it a political statement geared to create fear and panic. Please let us keep our heads on to eliminate this”.

He said that the virus needs to be attacked on the ground level, with a public education and clean up campaign.

He said “if you have 100 people in a room, eighty per cent will not show symptoms”.

Deyalsingh said: “I am appeal to everyone. Do not create unnecessary panic. The comment of Zika take you, you going to die, is absolutely not true”.

The Zika virus is a mosquito-transmitted infection related to dengue, yellow fever and West Nile virus. It can be transmitted by the bite of the aedes egypti mosquito which is prevalent in Trinidad and Tobago. Some people who contract the virus will exhibit flu-like symptoms and recover quickly.

The World Health Organisation has declared the Zika virus an international public health emergency, and there is growing concern about the birth defects in may be causing in babies. As many as four million people could be infected by the end of 2016.

On January 29, the country declared a national health emergency over the mosquito-borne Zika virus, with Deyalsingh saying that the virus posed a clear threat to Trinidad and Tobago. He warned pregnant women to protect themselves from the Aedes Aegypti mosquitoes.

Deyalsingh said the Rapid Response Unit was being set up to aggressively tackle the Zika virus and the Ministries of Local Government and National Security and other State agencies were involved in the programme.

Deyalsingh said fogging and spraying would continue throughout the country, as well as programmes to educate citizens on the virus.

Deyalsingh said all Members of Parliament are involved in the programme and called on all citizens to do their part.

Meanwhile, several local gynaecologists have advised women to postpone getting pregnant and also take precautions to avoid unexpected pregnancies.

Mollon bossed the game. Best T&T player in evidence today. However, the real test is bossing superior opposition.

Indeed. She looks a better player when she actually makes runs into the box and takes on defenders instead of sending in the hopeful crosses from  the flanks.

At 60'+ we are not playing with any stamp of authority, although Mollon and YaYa jes combined for the 5th. About 3 or 4 of the GUY players look particularly useful. Immediate depth if we had them.

Yeah, there are a few decent players on the GUY team. Apparently a few of them play together at club level in Canada so there's some chemistry there.
The foreign flavour of this team is impossible to ignore though....makes me wonder how they have been received by the population in Guyana.

4-1 at the half. Poor defensive work allowed Guyana to pull one back.

Really the ball was passed to Forbes and passes it up the field
How is that poor defensive work

19

She was at the top of the box and weakly  kicked the ball along the ground down the middle of the pitch directly to a Guyana player (maybe it was meant for King and she missed  it...)... the Guyana player then had the easy task of lobbing the ball into the empty net leaving Forbes stranded....

I think players should not talk to media a day or two before games? they talk to much sometimes, I red where they were planning to upset Canada and so on, this is not good because sometimes the media can turn things around and the players are also putting pressure of themselves.

Sometimes, we just need to plan silently and after games, yes, we can talk. Put our heads down and stay focus on the task ahead.

Maylee seems to be the only one who can talk proper or real.

A next thing, we win one game vs Guatemala and we hearing all kind of talk from the coaches and players, again, its ok to be positive and encourage players, but we must take things realistically and serious.

The structure of the T&T team and the tactical part were really poor vs Canada and this basically means a few things, 1, the coach lost control of the game and his tactics was also poor, 2, the lack of preparations/fitness,,, etc.

Agree 100% with this. And this is precisely why I think a loss to Guyana this afternoon ( which isn't at all far-fetched) will be a blessing for our women's team. Not only because it will save us from another resounding ass-whooping against the US in the semis, but it will force the   powers-that-be to take stock of the situation and realize that it can't be business as usual. If we move on to the semis I fear that the authorities will want to sing their own praises and forget completely about the abysmal showing earlier on. When we eventually do get knocked out after the US match we'll be treated to  the same song and dance about how the team exceeded expectations and did well to reach the semis despite the limitations etc etc.....nothing will change, and they'll go on doing the same thing for the next tournament and expect a different result.

Tasha complains to much. We are being out played in every aspect of the game. This team has gone backward from WCQ play. But we should still reach the final four.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. Guyana's playing a decent brand at the moment....they're playing with a lot more cohesion and purpose. I wouldn't write them off at all, especially after their come-from-behind win against Guatemala today.

Big hard back man like Eoin morgan saying what WI did was  embrassing , harsh on some kids .Tino Best had to pull up his socks , he didn't say a word .
And shouldn't he be playing for Ireland instead of being a ringer for the english ,unfair to even have to play against him , when you play England.
All the players piping up on twitter against the WI , should be ignored for the Cpl draft.

I wonder what the response would have been like if it was England or Australia who committed this egregious act.  Seems in cricket there's one rule for some and another rule for others...

Hard luck for Zimbabwe; they're heartbroken and rightfully so. But emotion aside, Paul did nothing illegal and all the condemnation he 's receiving is unwarranted in my view. If a law is deemed to be in contravention of the spirit of the game then maybe the ICC needs to strike it from the books....Players shouldn't be chastised for playing within the laws of the game..

Why TT can't arrange to play an associated team. JA has played Bermuda in the past. Is that some rule passed for the WI nations?

I recall there was a T20 invitational tournament at the QPO a few years back sponsored  by the ministry of sport. I believe it was in commemoration of our 50th Anniversary of independence. The invited teams were Barbados, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. We beat Barbados and Bangladesh but lost to Afghanistan. So I guess there isn't any rule prohibiting this.....just a question of funding and the will to make it happen.

Definitely agree with this! Every time there's a murder we always hear that the victim was a  "known gang leader" or a "known drug dealer". If they were known criminals why weren't they removed from the streets??...why are these pests allowed to roam around unhindered??  Aren't there already anti-gang laws in place??

Not condoning her behavior, but she friend is an imps...
It's obvious she was drunk, but instead of pulling her away from the situation, man filming the incident and bawling "What are you doing?" Smh  :banginghead:

I thought the same also but apparently the man filming isn't her friend. CBS news reported that he was the person who initially called for the Uber cab. When the cab arrived missy decided to jump in and he started filming shortly after. The report also stated she was put on administrative leave and may possibly lose her job.

their visas not gonna come thru in time?

They wanted them to drive 5 hours roundtrip yesterday from San Antonio, back to Houston to pick up the visas... on matchday at that.  I know they didn't make that drive so chances are they don't have their visas.

Visas to enter where?

US citizens require visas to enter Brazil.

Also no one mentioned but I'm sure we have realized, the much larger player pool that is being exposed to these kind of games.

When both units unite in Brazil, how many players will be there in total?

About 26....two full starting line-ups with subs and a waterboy/girl  ;D

Foreigners in battle for Invaders Bay

Investors fear Govt ‘cold shoulder’ for US$300m project
Yvonne Baboolal
Published:
Thursday, July 26, 2012
http://www.guardian.co.tt/news/2012-07-26/foreigners-battle-invaders-bay

The Starwood Hotel Group, owners of the Sheraton chain of hotels, and the University of Miami have stepped into the competition for premium property at Invaders Bay in west Port-of-Spain. The major overseas investors, who said they got the go-ahead for their project under the last PNM administration, fear they are now getting a cold shoulder from the People’s Partnership Government, but are vowing not to give up the fight.

M Falcon Group Ltd, a locallyformed company, comprising the University of Miami’s Miller School of Medicine, developers Bizzi Group, based in Italy, and the Arjomand Group, from the oil-rich Middle East, has submitted a proposal to the Government to construct the Sheraton Columbus Towers at Invaders Bay. A medical tourism facility, the project will comprise three towers for a cancer centre, a 300-room hotel and a residence complex on 12 acres of land. Construction costs have been estimated at US$300 million.

The plan is expected to go before Cabinet today but, according to a statement from the Falcon Group, things are not looking too bright. “We heard that because we don’t have any local people involved, we don’t really have a lobby. We heard that’s not how things work here,” the statement added. The proposal is one of several submitted to the Government for the Invaders Bay Development Project. One involves the expansion of MovieTowne, owned by local businessman Derek Chin. His proposal is also before Cabinet and there is concern he is being favoured by the Government. Invaders Bay comprises 192 acres of land and Chin is asking for 20 acres.

The source said M Falcon Group, comprising all the foreign players, was created specifically for the Invaders Bay project. Noting it has been four years since it began seeking approval for the project, the source said Falcon was approached by local investors, but it was agreed there should be no local participation. “The group comprises foreign groups that are publicly traded with very sophisticated operations. They prefer to be in a mix they are familiar with,” the source explained.

It is understood that the group has already interviewed Geneva Construction, a French-based company that undertook the Port-of-Spain Waterfront Project, to build the Sheraton Columbus Towers. Contacted for a response, Planning Minister Dr Bhoe Tewarie, with whom Falcon has been communicating about their project, said: “All recommended investors were put through a due-diligence process initiated by an intra-disciplinary committee appointed by Cabinet to engage the recommended investors. “Any decision going forward will be determined by Cabinet on the basis of the due-diligence report.” Tewarie said he was not in a position to comment on any individual investment.

He also said he had not received a letter from Republic Bank, dated July 24, 2012, stating it is eager to finance Falcon’s project. He also said he did not get a letter from the University of Miami, also dated July 24, reconfirming its interest in the project. However, the group provided copies of the letters to the T&T Guardian. The Falcon source said the group was planning to “fight to the end” for Invaders Bay. “After four years we are not about to quit so easily,” he added. He said all plans were in place to start construction immediately. Listing the ways the local economy would benefit from Falcon’s project, the group’s proposal said hundreds of locals would be employed during and after construction. Additionally they say the value of surrounding land would triple overnight and lure international investors who would not have previously considered T&T, the group claimed.

Tracing the start of the fight, the T&T Guardian was told in September 2008, under the former PNM administration, the group identified T&T as a strategic location for medical tourism. The main reasons were that most of the customers of the University of Miami came from Central and South America and T&T stood out in the Caribbean as financially stable in banking and there was a real need for an oncology centre, the source said.

(The Government announced last June its plan to build a national oncology centre by 2014. The privately- owned Brian Lara Cancer Treatment Centre became embroiled in controversy after it was alleged that radiation overdoses had been administered to 218 patients). According to Falcon’s proposal, cancer is a leading cause of mortality in T&T. “We identified a large influx of people coming from T&T to Miami for medical care,” the source said. When the group came it presented the proposal for Invaders Bay to the then government, and its prime minister, Patrick Manning.

They were told Invaders Bay land fell under the Urban Development Corporation (Udecott) at the time and no project could go forward because of an enquiry into the state enterprise. In 2009, Falcon approached the government again but was told they were busy with the Commonwealth Heads of Government Conference and the Summit of the Americas, hosted by T&T. “We were flying to T&T every three months,” the source added. In March 2010, the matter went before Cabinet and a note was passed giving the okay for Falcon to negotiate for the land, the source said.

“Within two weeks Manning called the election and they lost,” he said. Falcon then met with former Planning Minister Mary King in the new Government. “She said they were very interested but needed time, since they were new,” the source added. In December 2010, Falcon was invited to present its proposal to 30 members of Cabinet. “We were told they would get back to us in ten days. Then King was fired.” When they met Tewarie, his position was that the Government needed to be fair to everybody and interested parties should submit his package through the public tendering process, the source said.

He added: “We did so and in December 2011 got a letter stating we were one of three companies which met the required criteria. “Price Waterhouse did a due-diligence process with us in April and we were told that within one week the Government would get back to us. We haven’t heard from them since.” Noting that the Government has been talking continually about divestment and luring investors, the Falcon source asked: “Why is this not moving forward? Some of the best companies in the world are bringing this to them on a platter and after four years nobody can give us an answer. It’s scary.

Thereafter the army should do a systematic house by house sweep of the country for illegal guns and ammunition with no households being spared; Any illegal weapons should be seized with the owner of the property being given a possible 5 years of prison time for housing illegal weapons on their property regardless of how high up in society they may be.
Are you serious? Are you asking for another State of Emergency?

The Police need warrants to search people's homes. Warrants get issued by the court. If you want soldiers searching houses, you are talking about emergency powers.

Frankly that is a terrible idea.

If it will save lives and get illegal weapons off the streets then it is a brilliant idea as far as I am concerned.
Don't forget it should be done right after we have a 2 weeks guns amnesty to allow the public to hand in illegal weapons and ammunition with no questions asked.

If a SoE needs to be called to allow the cleanup operation to take place then one should be called but I don't think a SoE is necessary.

We have to do something drastic to get all these weapons off the streets as T&T borders have been left open to everything over the past 5 years. Praying alone isn't going to help us and save us from the criminal elements.

Currently at least 1 person is murdered every single day in T&T so understand that every day you wake up at least 1 person in T&T is going to be murdered. Let’s not wait until it is someone we know to realise that we need to do something drastic to remove all the illegal weapons from the streets.

The concept of a gun amnesty is based on the premise that persons in possession of illegal firearms actually want to relinquish possession of such but fear the legal consequences of doing so. If one wanted to get rid of an illegal firearm then nothing is stopping him/her from flinging it in the ocean or dumping it somewhere - completely anonymous...no questions asked. With maybe a few exceptions, persons who possess illegal firearms do so to engage in criminal activity and they do so with impunity......in this country (with the system of policing as currently obtains) there appears to many to be no disincentive to crime ; crime pays and the risk of being caught is minimal. For such people the benefits of having the firearm far outweigh  the risks involved.
If a gun amnesty is to work then maybe a financial  incentive should be offered because not going to jail is not an incentive; they are already not in jail. However, quite understandably,  the idea of using taxpayers money to "reward" criminals probably wouldn't be well received by many.
