Football / Re: Gerrard : I want to leave Anfield

I would have been sad to see him go, but I think Liverpool would have been fine without him. It may even have made some salary money available for players to better fit into the scheme of things.

Things are what they are though and at least for now he's still at Anfield.

I will add my two cents. Andre Samuel was pretty much on the money so I not saying much in terms of the game except to make one correction. Lawrence did pass the ball to Yorke who played it out wide to Stern who one timed it into Lawrence's path for him to run on to score. This is how I rated the players:

Jack: Needs a lot more confidence. He punched a straight forward shot right down the middle of the field. We were lucky the Panama players were wide or deep. Otherwise he was not bad. - 7

A. John: Was his usual aggressive self. Was erratic with his passing, but made some solid tackles. - 7.5

Andrews: Was very strong in the air defensively, but needs to impose himself for our attacking set plays. Made some good tackles and didn't allow Panama's forwards any room. Passing is usually his weak point, but he kept it simple and played it along the turf to his players. - 8.5

Charles: Was much quieter than in the CR game, but was still good. Strong in the tackle, he reads the game well. He is the best passer of the defensive players. - 9

Lawrence: Never one of my favourite players, but kudos to him in these last 2 games. His aerial ability in the back was good, he stepped up and made good tackles and generally was solid. Like Andrews he could make his presence felt a lot more for attacking set plays. - 8

Whitley: A dynamo in the middle of the field. He is not afraid to tackle hard or to foul the opposition. Offensively he adds speed and good passing ability. Tended to drift out of the game at times, but with experience at this level could be our biggest midfield find in a while. - 7.5

Theobold: Took to long to get into the game offensively, but his defensive hustle is an asset. Will get better I think. - 7

Edwards: This was one of his best games for T&T. He had the left back in trouble throughout the game. His crosses need to improve dramatically if he's to become the kind of winger he has the potential to be. His defensive work was solid too. - 9

Birchall: Started off tentatively and wasn't involved much offensively in the first half. He came into his own and his teammates gave him more of the ball in the second half. Positionally he was always where he needed to be and showed good vision and awareness. Can improve into a good international midfielder. - 8

Yorke: Continues to prove his worth on the team. He worked hard defensively, disrupting the flow of the Panamanians defensive players. He was a good target for the midfield and held up and passed the ball quite well. Not much negative can be said about his performance. - 9.5

S. John: Still is short of that striker's touch in front of goal. Wasted a bread and butter chance in either half. Perhaps his in front goal warm ups need to be more intense, especially since he's short of touch. He did work very hard for the first hour of the game and then stopped running as much. He also provided a good target and his ball control is superb under pressure. His sub came at a good time. - 7.5

Jones: Plenty of effort and he could be a prolific striker if he can hone his skills and control his emotions. Nearly got two quick yellow cards within minutes of coming on. He has a lot to contribute to the team is Leo gives him the chance. - 7.5

I predict a 0-0 in Mexico. Good luck team.

130 off of 120 balls isn't too shabby at all.  :D

We were all out for 345 though.

Cricket Anyone / Test Match #2
« on: April 05, 2005, 02:36:15 PM »
Hopefully most of us will try to keep the posts about the second test match in one thread. It makes no sense trying to follow the same topic in 5 or 6 different threads.

For this test I'd drop Smith, Ganga, Pagon, Deonarine and Browne and bring in Gayle, Sarwan, Lara, Mohammed and either Baugh or Ramdin. I don't think we can bowl out South Africa twice with 3 quick bowlers and 3 part time spinners. We need either a quality all-rounder or a forth bowler and I'd pick the forth bowler to be a spinner. Especially when 71 of the 160 second innings overs was bowled by the part time spinners.

We should not pick players based on talent, we need to pick the best team available. Smith, Pagon and Deonarine are talented, but talent and $1 will buy a bag of Olé.

If Baugh and Ramdin are not ready for Test cricket then they should not be selected. The selectors need to select the best team available so that the Windies can win matches. No one should be selected on the team to gain experience, they should be selected because they are capable. That said I actually think that either Baugh or Ramdin are ready for Test Match cricket and should be selected.

Why not? This is just day 1 of the test match. The Windies are proven two faced performers. Who will come out tomorrow?

347/3 Chanders completes his 12th test hundred in his debut match as Windies captain. Hinds is on 188.

the regional tournament is a proving "big fish small pond" league, but it is the only one we have with which to select players. What needs to happen is to drop players who do not perform sooner rather than later. We tend to hand on to players too long under the premise that they need time to settle into the game. Dropping a player isn't the end of his career. Drop him and let him continue to try to make runs or take wickets while working on whatever deficiencies he may have.

I suppose Bryan Davis is going to provide Lara or any of the other C&W players with sustainable income inbetween Test Series? Apparently it is also okay for the West Indies sponsors to determine who is eligible for selection. There is lies the problem with administration in the Caribbean... attitudes like that.

anyone expected us to bat at 4 plus runs per over? Hinds in site of a double century and Chanders in site of another ton, his 12th. A record 4th wicket partnership against RSA, which is now at 224.

I wonder what was the difference in the first two games and yesterday's game. How much did Bertille have to do with the couple improvements?

I also agree with Palos that a more competent coach would probably have had the lads playing better and we'd be either 4 points or 6 points to the good by now. We played a US team with only 4 or 5 of them playing competitive football at the time in the afternoon heat and still lost a game in which they controlled the possession for long periods. When next are we going to play an out of shape USA in a WC qualifier? Guatemala might be playing good ball and away games are supposed to be tough so I am not assuming we'd have won. Count the CR game and we should have had 2 home wins by now and at worst 1 home win and 1 home draw.

Football / Re: My report and opinion on today's game
« on: March 31, 2005, 11:55:39 AM »
First time posting in this format so I'll piggy back on a thread. Here is how I saw the game.

Ince: was solid for the most part. Made some good saves and except for the dropped cross seemed confident and in control.

Atiba Charles: my first time seeing him play. Started off a little bit slow in terms of ball possession, but tackled well from the get go and didn't allow the CR forwards any time or space. The odd occassion he came forward in attack he looked good. He was the most complete defender on the field.

Lawrence: suprised me with his performance. I am not a fan of him and was against him being on the team, but I'm happy to write that at least yesterday he proved me wrong. He tackled well, he made his presence felt and positioned himself well for most of the game. I still think he can be a liability since he doesn't anticipate or pass the ball well.

Anton Pierre: was solid throughout. People keep saying he's slow, but he was never out paced by any attacker and was always in position to tackle or intercept longer balls. Doesn't seem like a lack of speed is his problem. His passing can be more consistent, but all in all another good performance from him.

Rojas: not spectacular nor skillful, but he is consistent. He harasses attacking wingers and tackles hard. If he was more skillful he'd actually be a good attacking threat, but with some hard work he can earn a regular spot on the left.

Edwards: was usually in position to receive the ball, but didn't make as much use of it as he should have. The CR left side was always comfortable knowing that he was not going to make them run hard to defend him. He did tackle well and hustled for most of the first half, but to be an effective winger he needed to take on the defense more often. He'd also have been better served to have more support from the inner midfielders as he was occassionally left on the flank by himself with no easy passes to make.

Spann: my player of the first half. He set the tone early for T&T with two hard tackles on CR midfielders. CR never had time to play the ball around in the middle of the park. Besides his strong defensive play he also made good passes coming forward. It's a wonder we've not seen much of him before.

Eve: another player I do not like who suprised me. Worked hard defensively for a change... a welcome one. His freekicks weren't as good as I've seen them and that could have put more pressure on CR. I'd still prefer to see him in the last 30 minutes of the match where I think he can have more impact.

Yorke: he is earning his keep on the team. He's another player putting pressure on the opposition's midfield to good effect. He works well with Spann, makes good passes and anticipates well.

Glenn: didn't use his speed to good effect. Can be a dangerous player running at the defence, but he didn't try to take on the CR at all. With better service from the wings he could have given CR more problems.

John: his ball control is still spot on and he played well in spurts. He seems short of goal scoring touch at the moment though, but if he's the quality striker I think he is he'll come out of that.

Subs -
Sam: brought some energy to the field at a time when we were starting to slow down. Perhaps needed to come on 10 minutes earlier to have a better effect.

Fitzpatrick: seemed to work harder than the U.S. game. Perhaps a bit slow to play out on the wing.

Nigel Pierre: looked dangerous. Should have gotten a bit more power on his header, but he did well to get there. He was willing to do what Glenn was not and that was take on CR defenders.

Overall it was the best game we've played in the qualifiers that I've seen. We gave up some chances to CR, but generally we played them hard and made them work for what they got. Considering the possession we had we should have done more in attack. We kept the ball for longer periods and strung more passes together, but with the more skillful winger, Edwards, collecting the ball square instead of running behind the defenders to receive it we were seldom menacing. The crossing was not good and that could have been the difference between 1-0 in our favour and the point we did get.

If we continue to play the way we did while tightening up on the few mistakes we can actually press for third instead of hoping for forth. Our problem today was not defensive which is a welcome change from the norm. We need to have the confidence to attack as a team and when we get that we'll be a very dangerous team, in particular at home.
