The most talked about knee in the UK
28-Apr-2005

Celtic striker Craig Bellamy has praised Marvin Andrews for his courage in playing last Sunday at Ibrox on a miracle comeback from a damaged cruciate knee which still recovers surgery in order for a full recovery.

"He has got personal beliefs and everything like that and that is up to him. Credit to him, he is a strong guy. You definitely need that because if you have a cruciate and you are playing football then it is impossible,” said Bellamy who suffered a similar injury in 1999.

Andrews suffered the blow on March 13 this year and the Scottish Press has now dubbed it as the “most talked about left knee in the United Kingdom”.

Inside the first minute on Sunday, all eyes were on Andrews as he went in for a tackle on Bellamy and both men clashed before the big man was back on his two feet.  Rangers boss Alex McLeish was breathing a sigh of relief that he was not forced to make an early change.

The Ibrox PA announcer had cheesily played ‘I’m A Believer’ as Andrews warmed up with his team-mates before the match and he went on to do well in his 83 minutes with the only fault being understandable rustiness, according to the Daily Record.

“I was speaking to Steve Watford (Celtic coach) and he couldn’t believe Marvin’s performance," said McLeish. "The injury wasn’t a problem but we were worried about his legs in terms of fitness. That’s why I took him off and maybe could have done so five minutes earlier. He was running on empty."

Meantime, defender Brent Sancho twisted his ankle in Dundee’s 1-0 loss to Kilmarnock on Saturday and is fighting to be fit for Saturday’s derby with Dundee United.

Romario scores in farewell match for Brazil

SAO PAULO, April 28 (Reuters) - Brazil striker Romario celebrated his international farewell with a goal as the world champions beat Guatemala 3-0 in a friendly international on Wednesday.

The 39-year-old, who was brought back for a one-off game four years after his making last appearance for Brazil, headed into an empty net in the 17th minute after Ricardinho pounced on a poor clearance by goalkeeper Miguel Klee, who was left stranded.

The former PSV Eindhoven, Barcelona and Valencia player was then booked for removing his shirt as he celebrated.

Romario was substituted in the 38th minute by Grafite and escorted off the field by Rai, Branco, Viola and several other team-mates from Brazil's 1994 World Cup winning team, when he spearheaded the attack and scored five goals.

He then completed a lap of honour at the Pacaembu stadium, holding up play for several minutes.

"Unfortunately, it's over, but I'm very happy with everything I've conquered," said Romario, who wept through the Brazilian national anthem before kickoff.

Romario, whose international career began in a friendly away to the Republic of Ireland in 1987, will continue his club career with Vasco da Gama at least until the end of the year.

Brazil, fielding a team of home-based players for the game which was arranged to celebrate the 40th anniversary of a television station, went ahead when defender Anderson beat Klee to Cicinho's cross and headed home after five minutes.

Romario, who scored Brazil's goal when the teams drew 1-1 in their only previous meeting in 1998, was twice close to opening his account before his goal. He also had a goal disallowed for offside in the 26th minute.

Grafite, one of 11 Brazilian players to make their international debuts, scored the third in the 65th minute.

Guatemala, missing five first-team regulars, gained in confidence after Robinho and Romario were taken off.

They played some neat football in midfield but missed Carlos Ruiz and Dwight Pezzarossi, two of the absentees, in attack.

Rangers 1-2 Celtic

O'Neill insists title is not won
McLeish not ready to concede
Superb goals from Stilian Petrov and Craig Bellamy gave Celtic a victory at Ibrox that virtually ensures the champions another Scottish title.
Petrov powered a header into the corner of the net from a Didier Agathe cross and Bellamy broke clear to curl the second goal home before the break.

A Marvin Andrews header struck the bar and Sotirios Kyrgiakos had an effort cleared off the line for Rangers.

Steven Thompson fired home late on, but Celtic held on to go five points clear.

Rangers manager Alex McLeish had gambled on recalling defender Andrews, who has refused to undergo an operation for a cruciate ligament injury.

Thomas Buffel was relegated to the bench after remarks suggesting he did not like the combatative nature of Scottish football and was replaced with Hamed Namouchi in midfield.

French wing-back Agathe returned to the Celtic side for the first time since January's Old Firm derby.

Rangers won 2-0 at Celtic Park that day, but signs that the story would be reversed came in the opening minute, when Ronald Waterreus had to save at the feet of Bellamy.

Nacho Novo blasted well over after racing clear to the edge of the Celtic penalty box.

He paid for that miss when Petrov opened the scoring after Agathe swung in a cross and the midfielder stole in front of Andrews to score.

The league is not won yet - a massive step has been taken but the team has to stay focused

The scorer was struck by an object thrown from the stand and booked for over-celebrating as the match threatened to turn ugly.

Kyrgiakos missed a great chance for an equaliser, diving to head straight at goalkeeper David Marshall from five yards.

The Greek defender's misery was quickly compounded when he allowed Bellamy, gathering a through ball from Alan Thompson, to turn inside him and fire the second goal home from the edge of the box.

Marshall was forced into a superb, finger-tip save when Dado Prso let fly from the edge of the Celtic box.

And Andrews' effort struck the face of the crossbar after Marshall failed to cut out a Ricksen corner kick.

Beattie, on early in the second half for the injured Bellamy, forced Waterreus into a point-blank save and ought to have done better than blast over after being put clear.

Novo came close at the other end, Marshall blocking one poked effort and then being rescued by Jackie McNamara on the goalline after being rounded by the Spanish striker.

Waterreus saved well from a Stan Varga shot on the turn, but it was Rangers piling on the pressure and Agathe hacked a Kygiakos header off the line.

Substitute Thompson gave McLeish's side some late hope, blasting home from four yards following a goalmouth scramble, but it was Celtic who secured a deserved victory.

English man Terry Fenwick returned to Trinidad on Friday to take up duties once again.

The 1986 England World Cup team member arrived here to take up position of head coach of CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh for the current Pro League season.

Jabloteh is currently in 5th spot after two games having lost their opener to Vibe CT 105 W Connection. Technical Director Michael Grayson with Angus Eve had been in charge of the team but Fenwich has been recalled to lift the team. Jabloteh previously enjoyed success under him including the 2002 Pro League title before he returned to England to take up duties with Northampton Town. Fenwick was also a popular television football announcer during his earlier stay in Trinidad.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- San Jose goalkeeper Pat Onstad stopped Josh Wolff's penalty kick in the second half and the Earthquakes held on to beat the Kansas City Wizards 3-2 Saturday night.

The Earthquakes (1-1-2) allowed late tying goals by New England and Chivas USA in their first two games at Spartan Stadium. But Onstad preserved their first win by deflecting Wolff's kick off the crossbar.

Dwayne DeRosario gave San Jose a 3-2 lead in the 57th minute, bouncing his first goal of the season off the far post and into the net. Three minutes later, the Wizards (1-1-1) were awarded a penalty kick after Jimmy Conrad was fouled in the box during a free kick, but Wolff failed to convert.

Rookie Scott Sealy scored his first career goal during a goalmouth scramble in the fifth minute, giving the Wizards the lead.

San Jose forward Ronald Cerritos scored past goalkeeper Bo Oshoniyi from 15 yards in the 14th minute to tie the match at 1. Craig Waibel picked up the assist.

Chris Klein took a pass from Kerry Zavagnin and scored from 20 yards out, giving Kansas City a 2-1 lead in the 34th minute.

In the 40th minute, San Jose's Brian Ching headed in Brad Davis' free kick to make it 2-2.

UEFA approves new player rules

By TIMOTHY JACOBS, Associated Press Writer
April 21, 2005
TALLINN, Estonia (AP) -- A rule designed to increase the number of locally trained soccer players was unanimously approved Thursday by European soccer federations.

Starting next season, teams will be required to have a 25-player roster that contains at least two players trained at their own academy. An additional two must come through systems of clubs from the same country.

Although the rule applies only to UEFA's competitions, including the Champions League and UEFA Cup, European soccer's governing body urged its members to adopt it in domestic competitions.

The quotas, approved at UEFA's annual conference, will increase to four club-trained players and four from the home country in 2008.

The measure is an attempt to reverse the effects of a 10-year-old European Court decision outlawing limits on nondomestic players within the European Union.

The Bosman ruling, named for the player who prompted the change, allowed wealthy teams such as Real Madrid to assemble talent from all over Europe and neglect the development of young players. Smaller clubs found it cheaper to employ players from Eastern Europe and Scandinavia.

UEFA chief executive Lars-Christer Olsson said some of Europe's wealthiest teams, such as Chelsea and Barcelona, balked at the new ruling because it will restrict their ability to field the best team possible.

Delegates also voted unanimously to extend by one year the tenure of UEFA's executive committee, which includes president Lennart Johansson.

The move means former Germany coach and captain Franz Beckenbauer will be able to challenge three-time European player of the year Michel Platini for president when Johansson steps down in 2007. Beckenbauer is chairman of the organizing committee for the 2006 World Cup in Germany, ruling him out had the vote been next year.

I repeat the MLS is not the best place for players name three players from Trinidad to have a successful career in the MLS. If the players want to play close to home I suggest they play in the Mexican league. I’m not saying the MLS is a bad league by no means it’s a bad league but its not the best place for our players no matter how good Cornel Glen is he will keep getting traded maybe last for two seasons at best look at how much players from T&T PLAYED IN THE MLS where have there career end up.

Brazil name new players, Romario for Guatemala friendly

RIO DE JANEIRO, April 18 (Reuters) - Brazil coach Carlos Alberto Parreira has included 13 uncapped players for next week's friendly at home to Guatemala and recalled 39-year-old Romario for a farewell appearance.

"He will start the game and play for at least the first few minutes," said Parreira. "It's a tribute to one of Brazilian football's great players."

Romario, who scored five goals as Brazil won the 1994 World Cup with a team also coached by Parreira, last played for his country in a World Cup qualifier away to Uruguay in 2001.

He currently plays for Rio de Janeiro's Vasco da Gama, the club where he began his career.

Parreira was forced to pick only home-based players for the game, which is not being played on a FIFA international date and has been arranged to celebrate the 40th anniversary of a Brazilian television station.

Despite not being able to call on any of Brazil's top players, such as Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Kaka and Adriano, Parreira said he was spoilt for choice when picking the side.

"There wasn't room for everyone," he said. "It was difficult to get it down to 22. That shows how strong Brazilian football is."

The newcomers are Cicinho, Gabriel, Fabiano Eller, Anderson, Leonardo, Glauber, Marcinho, Fernandinho, Josue, Carlos Alberto, Fernandao, Grafite and Fred.

Brazil face the Central Americans at Sao Paulo's Pacaembu stadium on April 27. The teams drew 1-1 in their only previous meeting at the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 1998.

Goalkeepers: Marcos (Palmeiras), Rogerio Ceni (Sao Paulo)

Defenders: Cicinho (Sao Paulo), Leo (Santos), Gustavo Nery (Corinthians), Gabriel (Fluminense), Fabiano Eller (Fluminense), Anderson (Corinthians), Leonardo (Santos), Glauber (Palmeiras)

Midfielders: Mineiro (São Paulo), Marcinho (Sao Caetano), Roger (Corinthians), Magrao (Palmeiras), Fernandinho (Atletico Paranaense), Josue (Sao Paulo), Carlos Alberto (Corinthians), Ricardinho (Santos)

The MLS is not the best place for T&T players my reasoning for this is simple the MLS have a limit on foreign players so at any time if the team can sign a player from a more recognize league they will drop the Trini player because face it they have no respect for our players two they don’t pay enough and with the way they trade players you mite be playing for a different team every year just look at Jamaicans Andy Williams he has been trade to almost every team in the league.

$25m in losses as firemen hit by water shortage in city

ALL of The People's Mall, six stores, one restaurant and a Government office were destroyed in an early morning, multi-million-dollar fire in downtown Port of Spain yesterday.

The fire, which reportedly began at the People's Mall, blazed for more than eight hours due largely to a shortage of water, but also because of strong winds and fire tenders which kept breaking down.

Other businesses lost in the blaze included (on Frederick Street) Pizza Boys, Kristina's, Catwalk, Fabric Land, Nina's, Y De Lima's, the Health Ministry's Education Office and the Cocoa Board. Queensway on Queen street was also destroyed.

A preliminary estimate by the Downtown Owners and Merchants Association (DOMA) placed losses at some $25 million.

Chief Fire Officer Lennox Alfred confirmed that when he arrived on the scene just after 6 a.m. fire officers had to rely on the water supply brought in by the fire tenders. Alfred said there was no water in any of the many fire hydrants which lined Frederick, Queen and Henry Streets, near the affected areas.

Grief and frustration for this People's Mall booth owner, a victim of the fire. PHOTO: JERMAINE CRUICKSHANK

Alfred said they had to run hoses as far as the Port of Spain docks to get a sea-water supply to fight the flames. He also said WASA had to be called in and water trucks brought to the scene to deal with the blaze.

The fire reportedly began on the north-west side of the Mall, closest to The Bridal Shop on Frederick Street.

Many booth owners could be heard saying they believed the blaze had been deliberately set to get them and their wood and galvanise structures off the lots they had been occupying for years.

Outside of this the Sunday Express understands that there are two theories being entertained as to how the fire started. The first: someone was attempting to charge a battery to start a generator used by roadside music pirates, when the battery exploded. The second: a more sinister story directly linked to the Friday evening murder of Morvant resident Andre Paul. Police are investigating claims that fire was set to a tailoring shop at the Mall in revenge for the killing of Paul. Witnesses reported seeing three young men running away from the booth shortly before the fire began.

By 7.30 a.m. all of the booths on the Frederick and Queen Street side of the Mall were destroyed.

Barricades were set up at the corners of Queen and Henry and Queen and Frederick Streets to keep the crowd at bay and to control, police officers said, expected looting. The Sunday Express was told that shots fired into the air by law enforcement officers earlier in the morning put paid to that intent.

The barricades were manned by members of the Guard and Emergency Unit, the Port of Spain Task Force and the Inter-Agency Task Force, which included a sprinkling of personnel from the Defence Force.

At 8.25 a.m. the attempts to prevent the fire from spreading from the Mall to the bigger businesses proved futile when smoke was spotted on Queensway's first floor, with owner Anthony Rahael and his brother, Health Minister John Rahael, looking on from across the street.

Rahael, approached about removing the stock of fabric from the building which was not yet engulfed, remarked: "It is not worth the risk, let it burn."

And even as attention was being paid to the Queen Street blaze, the clock tower of Trinity Cathedral, a block away, caught fire.

Persistently strong breezes which had been fanning and spreading the flames all morning, transported embers to the church tower.

Firemen were able to quickly get into the tower and put out the small fire, which left a small hole in structure.

At 8.55 a loud rumble inside the Queensway store sent firefighters scampering out of the building as the upper floors collapsed. It was now truly over for this store.

At the corner of Queen and Henry Streets, officers squatted inspecting a bag of herb-like substance taken out of one of the burnt-out booths but their attention was soon diverted by the sound of scores of officers simultaneously cocking their weapons.

The sound brought others running to the corner as a near riot threatened to erupt when a police officer kicked a civilian.

The man, a Muslim, had been reportedly toting items from his booth and attempted to get past the barrier to continue his chore. At least one bottle was thrown before the crowd thought better than to go up against the lawmen who stood in a ready position.

The arrival of Port of Spain Mayor Murchison Brown only served to further ignite the ire of the crowd, when he failed to address them.

"So we ent lose business too?"

" He can't come and talk to us? Is only the Syrian he could talk to?"

" He come and stand up and talk to them and not a word for us."

They felt better though when Women's Affairs Minister Joan Yuille-Williams arrived on the scene and paid them the attention they felt they deserved.

Just after 10 a.m., it appeared that all was under control - in fact the Chief Fire Officer made such a pronouncement - but as fire officers began to relax, flames could be seen dancing on the rooftop of Nina's, on the western side of Frederick Street.

Immediately firefighters rushed to save the cloth store and neighbouring Y. de Lima's. But with three broken-down fire appliances and the one hose employed in the task of sprinkling water as if from a bathroom shower, and at times no water at all, and the winds continuing to blow, the fire continued to spread.

A noise of concern was raised about the two huge LPG cylinders said to be housed at the Pizza Boys Restaurant. Fire officers could be seen rolling them away.

More WASA water trucks were brought to the scene and, by 1.30 p.m. -about eight hours after the fire began-and with the Pizza Boys Building still ablaze, the inferno was said to be under control.

Up to late last night, fire officers were still busy at the scene trying to put out stubborn flames at the corner of Queen and Frederick Streets where black smoke continued to waft through the air.

Police officers, along with soldiers, remained posted at the scene and barricades remained in place. They informed the Sunday Express that they would be guarding the streets all through the night.

A Ryan McStay goal was enough to give Falkirk victory over Ross County and secure the Division One title.
It virtually ensures promotion for John Hughes' side, only a rejection by the Scottish Premier League of their new stadium possibly standing in their way.

Falkirk are now 16 points ahead of Clyde with only four games remaining following the Cumbernauld outfit's 0-0 draw with St Johnstone.

The Bairns have not been in the top flight since 1996.

Dundee United 2-1 Hibernian

Garry O'Connor challenges United's Gary Kenneth
Substitute Jason Scotland grabbed the winner as Dundee United came from behind against the run of play to progress to the Scottish Cup final.
Hibernian dominated the first half and took a deserved lead from the penalty spot after the break at Hampden Park.

Derek Riordan fired home after Barry Robson pulled down Dean Shiels.

But Jim McIntyre equalised from close range and Scotland fired the winner from 18 yards four minutes later as United belied their poor league form.

United caretaker boss Gordon Chisholm had made one change, with former Hibs midfielder Grant Brebner replacing Mark Kerr in midfield.

Steven Whittaker replaced suspended Hibs skipper Ian Murray, while Riordan was declared fit after being injured in last week's league defeat of United.

Stephen Glass struck a 20-yard drive that stung goalkeeper Tony Bullock's hands in the opening moments to signal early Hibs dominance.

Riordan was next to have a go, his clever curling effort from 25 yards looping a couple of feet over the bar.

Whittaker was next to force Bullock into tipping the ball over the bar with a thundering effort from 25 yards.

United battled their way back into the game but lacked composure and creativity, a curling effort by Stevie Crawford that flew well over being their only threat in the opening 45 minutes.

The Tannadice side had young defender Gary Kenneth to thank for a goal-line clearance after Riordan turned past Paul Ritchie and his low drive slipped under Bullock's body.

Steven Fletcher skied over the bar from seven yards after Ritchie let a Riordan cross slip between his legs after the United defender's initial poor clearance.

O'Connor sent a header straight at Bullock from eight yards as Hibs piled on the pressure.

The match was more even as nerves began to tell after the break, but Hibs made the breakthrough after 58 minutes.

Dean Shiels was pulled down by Barry Robson as the midfielder burst into the box and Riordan sent Bullock the wrong way from the penalty spot.

Robson made amends by jinking into the penalty box and McIntyre forced home the winger's low ball into the six-yard area.

Scotland had replaced Crawford just before the equaliser and put United ahead when he ran across the edge of the Hibs box and fired the ball low past goalkeeper Simon Brown's despairing dive.

Falkirk eyes Atiba

Fresh from a promising performance in what was his first full World Cup appearance for this country, defender Atiba Charles is now looking forward to sealing his spot in the national team as well as secure an overseas professional contract.

Charles was on trial with English side Oldham Athletic last month and is expected to return there for preseason training in July. But he will also be looking at a possible visit to Scotland as Scottish First Division champions Falkirk, soon to be promoted to the Premier League, have expressed interest in having him over for a trial.

Reflecting on his performance against Costa Rica, Charles said “I always believed that I was capable of doing well with the first team and I was just waiting anxiously for that chance. I got it and I grasped it. I was obviously nervous at the start but the guys kept encouraging me and as the first whistle went I came into the game right away. This has done a lot for me and I think from now on, there’s no stopping me.”

“Now I am awaiting on a pre-contract from Athletic but there’s also interest from Coventry City and Falkirk.”

 Stern could move

Striker Stern John could be looking to join a new club in time for next season
The former Nottingham Forest striker said last week that he has some options and will consider a move in time for next season. John was not in the Coventry City side which won on the weekend.

“I got the weekend off because of the flight back the day before and I was glad to see that things went well for the team because we got three vital points and we are out of the relegation zone now,” John said.

“I know my form has not been the best in recent times but I’m just going to work on a few things and I get myself back into top shape for the matches coming up. I have a good feeling that I can come out of this drought which is something that all strikers go through. Hopefully I’ll be back to my usual self in quick time. I haven’t been playing with much confidence recently but I’ll get all that back in time and I’m looking forward to getting back home and working under the new coach as well,” John said.

 Ince always confident

Crewe Alexandra goalkeeper Clayton Ince said he was never worried about his performance going into the last 0-0 draw with Costa Rica.  Getting back into the start team in front of Shaka Hislop, Ince said, even after a shaky start in goal during the match, he was always confident of pulling off a solid showing between the sticks.

“It was s a poor decision by me to play the ball out at the time but it  was good t see that I got myself together quickly after that and I was able to keep a clean sheet for the rest of the game.  It was a great team effort and we have gained confidence. I am always a confident goalkeeper and even though I  was coming off the injury, I still believed in myself. The other guys also showed signs of this which is good for us a team,” Ince said. “The team showed a lot of character and once we can maintain this then I think we have a lot to look forward to in the remaining matches. Hopefully too with the new coach coming in things will work even better for us.”

“My aim now is to go back to Crewe and keep that number one spot and see how things go until the end of what is my final year of my  contract.”

Beenhakker holds first training session on Monday
05-Apr-2005
Shaun Fuentes

National Senior Team coach Leo Beenhakker described his first day of activities in this country as a “pleasurable and interesting one”.

The Dutchman arrived here on Monday evening and spent most of Tuesday meeting with members of the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation Executive and Technical Advisory Committee while being taken around to some sites including the Hasely Crawford Stadium by Assistant Coach David Nakhid and Assistant managers George Joseph and Joseph “Sam” Phillips.

Beenhakker also met with CONCACAF President Jack Warner, TTFF President Oliver Camps as well as officials of the Professional Football League and team technical staff.

”So far the visits have gone very well but of course this is just a very little part of what I am here for. The big part of my trip to Trinidad and Tobago is still  to come,” Beenhakker told TTFF Media as he toured the Hasely Crawford Stadium.

On Wednesday, Beenhakker will continue his meetings and also conduct his first training session at the Hasely Crawford Stadium from 4pm.

The following players, currently home, have been invited for training by the TTFF:
Duarance William, Jan Michael Williams, Keyeno Thomas, Derek King,  Anton Pierre, Atiba Charles, Leslie Fitzpatrick, Arnold Dwarika, Conrad Smith, Michael Celestine, Kerwyn Jemmot,  Stephen Cruickshank. Lyndon Andrews, Kerry Baptiste, Angus Eve, Densill Theobald, Aurtis Whitley, Jerren Nixon, Odelle Armstrong, Nigel Pierre

We’ have been down this road before and we all know what happen the last time Warner could not continue paying the last coach and the Government refuse to pay the last foreign coach so the QUESTION IS how long will this guy last.
