2010 World Cup - South Africa / Fifa makes 2010 Cup back-up plan
« on: April 30, 2007, 09:21:01 AM »
General elections are coming up, as soon as Blatter re-ups for
4 more, keep an ear for this continued tone about SA not being
ready.

Fifa makes 2010 Cup back-up plan

Blatter will appear on BBC One's new Inside Sport programme on Monday
Football's governing body has contingency plans in case South Africa cannot host the World Cup in 2010, Fifa president Sepp Blatter has said.
South Africa's preparations have been dogged by delays and there are fears its stadia will not be ready.

Blatter told BBC One's new Inside Sport programme: "Other countries are ready to organise the World Cup", although he said they would not be needed.

Blatter cited a list of countries that could step in, including England.

 606: DEBATE
Who should host the tournament if South Africa cannot?

The others he mentioned were the United States, Mexico, Japan and Spain.

"Definitely we have a possibility to go somewhere else if something happens," said Blatter.

South Africa is refurbishing or building 10 stadia for the World Cup

"It was the same case in Germany. Something can happen. A natural catastrophe or whatever, a big change in society - everybody against football.

"But then for the time being the plan B is South Africa and the plan C we definitely must have a possibility to go somewhere else, but it must be a natural catastrophe."

Last year, Blatter expressed misgivings about the lack of construction and renovation work on the 10 South African stadiums that are scheduled to host games in the World Cup.

And in December South African President Thabo Mbeki rejected claims that the tournament could be held elsewhere, insisting the 2010 World Cup would be an "exceptional event".

The Football Association said they had not been involved with any plans for the tournament to move to England.

"There have been no discussions with Fifa at this stage," a spokesman told BBC Sport.

"We do believe we have some of the finest stadia and football infrastructure in the world but it's hypothetical as we understand South Africa are on course to stage the 2010 World Cup."

Blatter reiterated his view that the 2018 World Cup should go to Asia rather than Europe - the English FA is considering making a bid for the event.

"I think we should maintain this rotation - at least with four continents. To take North and South America as one continent, Europe, Africa and Asia," he said.

"This would mean that the next World Cup after 2014 would go to Asia."

Cricket Anyone / Australia x Sri Lanka - FINAL!

Who wins?

I say depending on the toss, if the Aussies bat first, the Lankans
have a chance. If the Aussies bowl first, the game won't last long.
The winner of this toss decides the game.

After two meaningful games, and seeing how once again

Should Darren Ganga be on the Windies World Cup team?

Zulu leader warns 2010 could flop in South Africa

AFP
January 12, 2007
JOHANNESBURG (AFP) - South Africa's failure to combat crime and international perceptions that the country is unsafe, could render the 2010 Soccer World Cup a "monumental flop", veteran Zulu leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi has said.

The former cabinet minister said this international perception could deter some of the 450,000 visitors expected to visit the country - the first African country to host the massive international event.

"If prospective international visitors judge our country not safe enough to travel to, the event could turn out to be a monumental flop, and any economic gains hoped for will vanish into thin air," Buthelezi said in his weekly newsletter.

South Africa has one of highest crime rates in the world, with 18,793 murders reported in the country of 46 million over the 2004-05 financial year, according to national crime statistics.

More than 55,000 rape cases were reported by police in 2005.

Buthelezi regards this as disgraceful, adding the country's criminal justice system was on the verge of collapse.

"The government's inability to identify, combat, isolate and successfully prosecute and incarcerate criminals is a national disgrace," he said.

He also condemned the culture of glamorising crime in South Africa's townships as well as unhealthy, unfit and semi-literate police officers who were untrained and should be removed from the country's police services.

"It is totally unacceptable that tens of thousands of rapists, murderers, pedophiles, vehicle hijackers, drug dealers and thieves of all kinds as well as national and international criminal syndicates strike every hour and everyday in South Africa - usually with impunity," he said.

San Juan try for Fatima's crown

RBTT InterCol final

Kern De Freitas

Thursday, November 30th 2006

TODAY marks the end of the 2006 Secondary Schools Football League season. And again like last year, the national RBTT InterCol final will be a North versus East affair.

North InterCol champs Fatima College have returned to defend their title after a disappointing North Zone league campaign, but their opponents this time will be East runners-up San Juan Secondary Comprehensive whom they meet from 4 p.m. today at the Hasely Crawford Stadium

San Juan got past a typically defensively minded Naparima College outfit 2-0 in a somewhat scrappy encounter at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Malabar on Monday.

San Juan's form has been improving steadily since the InterCol began. They lost only the East Zone final to a tough St Augustine Secondary Comprehensive side by a 1-0 margin courtesy another brilliant strike by national midfielder Elton John, despite San Juan having the better of the exchanges.

San Juan then travelled to the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella, to hammer Presentation College San Fernando 4-0, getting the opportunity to meet Naps in the semis. A betting man though, would put his money on Fatima. They managed to do what no other team has done this season-beat "Green Machine", St Augustine 2-0 in the other semi on Saturday.

Fatima also returned from the dead with an injury time goal by defender Elijah Belgrave to grab a 3-3 regulation time draw against a determined Signal Hill Senior Comprehensive team.

Fatima went on to win that quarter-final 5-3 in extra time without the services of their skipper, national under-20 goalkeeper Adrian Foncette. They also overwhelmed rivals and neighbours Mucurapo Senior Comprehensive 3-0 in the North Zone final.

Reputations do not win matches though and it will be left to Fatima to do all the hard work to overpower a talented San Juan side and grab their fourth national InterCol title.

San Juan, looking for their first such trophy to add to their single national League title, will be heavily dependent on forward Anthony Guppy and midfielder and captain Elijah Manners and also Jonathan Romain, their star against Naps.

Fatima are very balanced in midfield, defence and up front.

With the deadly Jevon Morris and impressive Stephen Knox up front; Kieran Marin in midfield; and Belgrave and skipper Sheldon Bateau in defence, their one weak link might be reserve keeper Andrew Poon King, who replaces Foncette between the uprights. But he has proven himself very efficient thus far.

Only one team will walk away champs today. Either way, a very intriguing season-ending match is on the cards.

Are you using broadband?

Moderator's, please leave this post alone until I can better understand how to improve the feed from T&T.

June 10th, 2nd test St. Lucia.

Lara wins or loses the toss.

If he wins, bat first or field?
If he fields, he cyah watch he boys play.

If he bats, Ganga and Gayle ent go be there long,
does he drop down to number 7?

And we think we have problems.

59
Football / What are T&T's keys to any kind of success?
« on: June 04, 2006, 07:39:54 AM »
1. Play with the same tempo and heart as in the second Bahrain game.

2. Play with the same defensive determination as in the first Mexico game in
the Hex, AND we have to score our few chances when they come.

3. Yorke has to stop playing sweeper.

4. In the 3 games T&T play, the first 20 minutes will be crucial to any chance
we have. As Slovenia and the Czech's showed, unless we counteract the pace
being thrown at us.

The one thing very obvious with the Zlovenia and Czech game, the tempo
that good teams play at, is something we are unaccustomed to.
We will see what we've learnt on June 10th from the lessons of the past
10 days.

One hope I have, is we DO NOT embarass ourselves.
