Football / HUGHES HAILS THEOBOLD
« on: December 23, 2005, 08:52:36 AM »
Falkirk head coach John Hughes believes new signing Denzil Theobold can have the same impact in Scotland as Rangers defender Marvin Andrews.

The Trinidad and Tobago international, who plays for Caledonia AIA Fire in his homeland, has agreed to join the Bairns in January after impressing on trial earlier in the season.

The 22-year-old will be heading to the World Cup in Germany next summer with Andrews, Bairns player-coach Russell Latapy, Jason Scotland and Kelvin Jack.

And Hughes is predicting the midfielder will make the same progress as former Livingston defender Andrews has made at Ibrox.

He said: "Denzil can use both feet and is a natural football player.

"He is a young lad, is a non-stop talker with a smile like Dwight Yorke and wants to play football.

"Hopefully, he has that desire to go and do something for himself now.

"We are giving him the platform and, if he can go to the World Cup and have a great tournament, it will be great for Falkirk.

"He'll definitely come in January and Russell tells me he is better than what we have - so that's real competition for places.

"If he is every bit as successful as the likes of Russell and Marvin Andrews have been in Scotland, then we have found an ace in the pack."

Hearts goalkeeper Craig Gordon is hoping the team can return to form when the Bairns visit of Tynecastle.

The Jambos have won just once in their last five SPL games to slip four points behind leaders Celtic.

But, after the defeat at Rangers last week, the Scotland international insists the time has come for a reversal of fortune for the Edinburgh club.

Gordon told the club's official website,  "We simply have to get it right this week because we desperately need the three points to kick-start our challenge.

"We let Rangers dictate the play from the very start and gave ourselves no chance of winning the game.

"We got exactly what we deserved from the contest. Absolutely nothing.

"In fact we can count ourselves fortunate not to have been on the receiving end of a more emphatic defeat.

Trinidad & Tobago 1-1 Bahrain: Tight defence

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, Nov 12 (Reuters) - Trinidad and Tobago were held to a 1-1 draw by Bahrain in an entertaining World Cup playoff first leg on Saturday.

Trinidad's Christopher Birchall struck a stunning 25 metre half-volley to equalise with 12 minutes left after Salman Husein had given Bahrain the lead in the 72nd with a powerful header.

Trinidad were the more dangerous team at the Hasely Crawford Stadium but neither Stern John nor strike partner Dwight Yorke could find a way past goalkeeper Ali.

The playoff, with the second leg scheduled for Wednesday in Manama, is the climax of a difficult journey for both teams, neither of whom have ever played in the World Cup finals.

Bahrain, renowned for their ability to hit teams on the counter-attack, played cautiously during the first half with their defence keeping the home side at bay.

Although Trinidad piled on the pressure towards the break John's close range downward header was well saved by Ali and a point-blank Dwight Yorke shot was blocked.

Bahrain proved formidable at the back in the second half and Trinidad's probing play, orchestrated by Falkirk player-coach Russell Latapy, failed to produce an end result.

The visitors then took the lead against the run of play when Husein rose on the edge of the six-metre box to power a close range header past the helpless Kelvin Jack.

The goal stunned the noisy home crowd but they were soon celebrating as Birchall set himself to fire an unstoppable shot into the top left hand corner to level the scores.

The playoff, with the second leg scheduled for November 16 in Manama, is the climax of a difficult journey for both teams, neither of whom have ever played in the World Cup finals.

Trinidad finished fourth in the six-team CONCACAF final qualifying group to reach the playoffs, while Bahrain came third in their final Asian qualifying group and then beat Uzbekistan over three matches to qualify for the two-legged decider.

Birchall rescues T&T

Trinidad and Tobago were held to a 1-1 draw by Bahrain in the first leg of their World Cup play-off on Saturday.

The two sides are battling it out for a spot in Germany next summer and they could not be separated after 90 minutes in Trinidad.

T&T took the game to their opponents from the first whistle, but Stern John and Dwight Yorke were not at their clinical best in front of goal.

Bahrain dug in and were rewarded with the opener on 72 minutes, Salman Husein nodding in from close range to stun the T&T faithful.

The home side were staring defeat in the face when Port Vale midfielder Chris Birchall fired in a stunning effort from 25 yards to earn The Socawarriors a draw.

The tie is now evenly balanced ahead of the second leg in Manama on Wednesday.
