This headline doesn't fit with the story.  If Guadeloupe "deny" the team or the team was "held" by Guadeloupe then that suggests that the National U-20 team were the favorites.  If they were the favorites then a 1-1 draw would be a disappointment, not an "impressive" result.

Really????? Smh

There are a couple of walls with a list of Man Utd internationals.....can't find the pics right now though. From what you said, I assume the displays have been changed a bit

Correct, there is a list of Man Utd players who have received international caps. DY was listed. Did you see that in the main musueum area or elsewhere?

To be honest, I can't remember where I saw it....Utd's museum is huge (at least compared to Chelsea and Liverpool)

I was disappointed and kinda surprised to see Dwight holding a marginal presence on display at the Man U Museum ...

I was at Old Trafford last year...unless they've changed the displays, I was happy and proud to see Yorke's presence. It was in no way marginal...sharing a display case with Cantona definitely isn't marginal.

And the way the staff spoke of Dwight was amazing....said he'd always be smiling and laughing when he entered the stadium. They spoke like they absolutely loved him.

Here's how I define marginal ... the ONLY evidence I could find of DY anywhere was a lil piece ah ting in a corner of a display case ... it bore the title United Review, and Dwight was on the cover pic. By lil, ah mean DVD case size. Considering that I needed to wuk to find that, marginal fuh sure (not his legacy; but the evidence of it). Locating Andy Cole was difficult too.

I was on the premises a long time ... went in there more than once, when it dawned on me late in de dance ... I eh see Dwight?! amidst this chapter of a lesson in European history.

When I see dates, I consider parallel histories (what other people in other places were/might have been doing at that particular period in time). There are relatively few non-Europeans who have played for the club. Trust me, I eh miss him.

Will give you Ronaldinho.....if only because he has shown a similar love for the game. Diego still shows a sort of umbilical attachment to the game though....

Players listened and obliged. They didn't try out and instead stayed on for about an hour looking at the session

I don't understand. How could they stay for about an hour looking at the session when there was no session? They can't try out if there is no session? Right?

I was referring to the screening session held at Larry Gomes Stadium last week

... Last week Saturday there was u20 screening at the Larry Gomes Stadium. All advertisements and electronic and print articles indicated very clearly that sessions were to run from 9-12. A couple of ambitious kids from my neighborhood got to the stadium at 8:50 only to be turned back by an 'official' who told them that they were supposed to reach 'before 9'.

Let me sidestep the glaringly obvious for one minute....if these young players responded to the call for screening based on what they read online or in the daily newspapers, weren't they correct in getting to the venue on time? How were they supposed to know that they ought to have gotten there 'before 9'?

This is a prime example of what my issue is with our football. It is exceedingly difficult to get behind our federation, teams or even our domestic competitions because of the sheer and blatant lack of basic respect and courtesy the powers that be seem to have for our players. Bear in mind that this is not a Jack Warner problem or a Tim Kee problem....it seems to be just the way we do things.

The dissemination of information is just plain ridiculous and pathetic. And it seems to be a common thread throughout our football. From venue changes in the pro league to international games. For the Argentina game, I booked my hotel based on what the charter package was advertised to be. Lo and behold, the hotel was changed. I read as well that the game was to be played in Mar del Plata only to learn, after asking all over the place (including the federation ad tour organisers) that it was to be played at River Plate's stadium.

This is how we treat our young footballers and the fans....

In previous times I would post and engage Bakes in meaningless arguments, sometimes simply because he seems to be the most easily riled up poster here, other times because he seemed to revel in foisting his self-supposed superior comprehension and position on a variety of matters.

I stopped after a while (depriving the forum of my superlative grammar) because I realised Bakes is very quick to get personal and is unable to take as much talk as he gives....sad really.

FS does what he supposed to do....champion his club. Maybe he gets some stuff wrong or might be a little bit over zealous in his postings, but I've often seen him retract and apologise for erroneous statements.

Football / Re: How do you teach a player to be smart?
« on: June 10, 2014, 10:25:14 AM »
Had to chime in here.....

'We are stuck or obsessed with the MNT. If you want smart players you have to turn away from the MNT and look to the youths.'

This is so true, yet at the same time its the root of our problems as footballers.

Youths are not as excited or up to learn basic, intelligent football at their age. Rather, they want to be extravagant and pretty in their play. Its all about who could dribble more, run faster or shoot harder. Its never about proper technique, proper passes or good running off the ball.

I've mentioned it before, my son plays at the U16 level, at practice the coach will stop the session and show the team a simple knock off or an easier play....yet, when the session restarts its the same nonsense.

It starts where most of us learn our football....the community sweat.

Fortunately I live very very close to a stadium and witness and sometimes participate in the afternoon sweat that goes on on the training field. These kids absolutely refuse to play football. Its all about forcing the ball forward at all costs.

For example, as is apt to happen in a small goal sweat, players follow the ball. So if the ball is on one side of the field you'll find everybody gravitating to that side. No one seems to decide to pull off a lil wide so at the very least an outlet pass can be made. Another example is the youths seem to hate the back pass which can start over a play....its forward or out. If there's an attack near the goal. it doesnt matter if 15 guys are jumbled up in front of the goal....they seem to think it wise to force their way through by dribbling or passing into a player who has 4 or 5 men around him.

What amazes me is that they will always call out Barcelona or Madrid, so I know they see these teams, and more so Barcelona, playing passing, patient and attacking football, yet they come on the field to play and its like wild animals let loose.

Imagine in a small goal sweat, with the goal no more than two feet tall and four feet wide, guys will swing in a high cross...for what? For someone to leap in the air and score a header?

There's a particular youngster who plays very simple and intelligent football. When he sees the play crowded he starts it over. He is usually heckled and berated for such a play.

I don't necessarily subscribe to the belief that an academic brain translates into a higher level of football, as a football or cricket brain is a hell of a thing to possess.

The problem is that we learn the wrong thing from young. Football, like a human, has cognitive stages of development. Your football 'personality' is developed by a certain age. When a youth is constantly practicing the wrong thing up to ages 15/16 and more (due to the ssfl)....it is damn near impossible to correct it when they get to senior level.

Also, $3500 isn't the worst salary one can get in TT. I think the problem is exactly as the FCB rep stated....players waiting on the golden contract.

Football / Scottish-born pushing Caribbean football to new heights
« on: April 13, 2014, 09:00:44 PM »
Scottish-born pushing Caribbean football to new heights.
By Inshan Mohammed.

Soca Warriors Online (SWO) recently caught up with newly formed West Indies Football Association (WIFA) Manager and Scottish-born James Baird, as the former Tobago United player gave us a little insight on the future plans for WIFA.

James, 30, is a former goalkeeper for folded TTProleague club Tobago United and has also played for Hearts, Hibernian, Livingston FC, Alloa and Stenhousemuir FC. He had stints with the Scottish Under 16 and Under 17 teams.

He also trained with local outfit Superstar Rangers and with the British Virgin Islands national football team and even played for their under 23's in a small local tournament, but, after eligibility problems, decided against representing the senior side.

James is the Technical Director and goalkeeper for the West Indies Football Association (WIFA). He owns and runs his own football team and academy called Trinidad and Tobago Highlanders.

James has lived in T&T for quite some time and has developed an affinity for the country and the Caribbean.  So much so, that he is now trying to make a significant contribution to players throughout the region. His immediate goal is to get the WIFA to participate in the 6th VIVA World Cup which is scheduled to kick off later this year. Should he be successful, the West Indies will be participating for the very first time.

James said, "The VIVA World Cup is an umbrella association for teams unaffiliated with FIFA, planned to be held every two years.  WIFA (The Waves) are a member of the N.F. Board - the association for non FIFA countries which is based in Narbonne, France. The purpose is to promote the Caribbean and West Indies.  There was no representative on the non-FIFA scene, so I was asked if I would take on the challenge and I accepted."

"The N.F.-Board was formed in 2003 and is responsible for hosting the VIVA World Cup which was founded in 2006. The biggest VIVA World Cup tournament was hosted in 2012 in Kurdistan. A record nine teams featured with the hosts defeating Northern Cyprus 2-1 in the final in front of 22,000 fans. The 2012 VIVA was considered the most successful and competitive finals since the tournament began."

He continued, "We have a few scouts worldwide, from Scandinavia to the UK and the United States, and have a UK-based Futsal team which also helps our UK-based players keep fit and get together when we don't have matches."

"I have a full coaching staff which I will publish before the 2014 VIVA World Cup and we have a player pool so far reaching around 150 from all over the world."

"Currently we are in negotiations with a few people about a ground as we want our own ground as we will have a local squad training full time and hopefully playing in a local competition."

"WIFA is strictly Caribbean or Caribbean parentage, although we have a rule that anyone who lives in the Caribbean continuously for a period of time will also qualify to play in international games for our team."

"However, initially, players will not get paid but will get many perks, but we will be working towards that within the not too distant future. We have a few international sponsors but are on the look out for more local and regional sponsors, so things will change for the better once we become more recognized, then our brand will sell and players will benefit."

When asked why he didn't just try to revive Tobago United and bring them back into the Pro League instead of coming out with a WI team that is not consistently active, especially since Tobago is dying for a Pro League team, James added: "I did consider the Tobago idea, but the WIFA project is a lot larger, and a worldwide project.  I also realized that the hurdle of local sponsorship and traveling will always be a problem for a Tobago team. I am not ruling out moving the WIFA project to Tobago though, but I would have to speak to the Tobago House of Assembly (THA)."

"At present we are happy where we are based in Trinidad and Tobago, but, as we are a West Indies team, we could move to any of the islands, especially if offered a home ground”, ended James.

There have been many attempts to put a West Indies football team together, but they failed in the majority.  Although there was the British Caribbean Football Association established in 1957, and they played various matches as the select team from the Caribbean, mostly against English opposition.

The West Indies FA will use Caribbean players from all over the world who have not played with their national teams and give them the opportunity to represent the West Indies and experience international football.

I could be wrong here...very wrong.....but I really can't see why Keon Daniel is referred to in terms like 'enigma', 'maverick', and so on. Even in the pics of him in training his body language is poor....head down, seemingly inattentive to what the coach is saying. Why would anyone want him on their team eludes me. He doesn't contribute and obviously has serious personal issues.

Mods....merge if necessary

Took my son to Central FC's youth try outs this past Sunday. Though it was scheduled to start at 9am, when we got there the pro team was winding down their session. I thought it was good that the younger ones (who got there on time) got an opportunity to see the seniors train.

Was a large turnout imo, maybe about 50 players or so, with the majority being u18s. First thing that struck me was that Central appeared very well organized. A couple tents for player registration and shelter from the sun, which soon enough became rain, bibs for the kids and a numbering system which would no doubt have made player identification a bit easier.

I also took note of the presence, and when I say presence I mean for the entire session, of the clubs hierarchy. Sancho, Harrison etc were all there looking on. I found that to be particularly impressive. It meant to me that Central really has an eye on sustainability and longevity. Central is clearly sponsored by SIS...lol. The tent was branded, poles had company logos. I thought it was great advertisement. Can't see why more local companies don't get on board....Central does a great job of giving their sponsor prominence.

Earlier this year I visited both Melwood and Carrington and whilst the coaches and managers were present, didn't see any club owners or chairmen.....didn't expect to anyway. But it was nice touch to see Sancho et al there.

Great to see was the senior players at Central being given youth coaching responsibilities....Marc Leslie, Keon Trim even Jan Michael Williams were active in the try outs. Leslie and Trim moreso. Bear in mind that these guys trained in the hot sun immediately before the tryouts began. Good stuff. A few other senior players also stayed on and had a look at the tryouts, offering their comments to those of us in the pavilion. Central seems to be a tight knit bunch....good camaraderie all around. Was also good to see Terry Fenwick stay on as well and be active in the tryouts.

I was very impressed with my first close up with Central FC and look forward to seeing them do great things in the coming years.

Oh....Marvin Oliver might be 38, but I would sign him for 2 more years.....skinny as hell.....but a true player.

That is one of the most positive kudos I have ever read about any local club.. I await an pray, trim son get thru. Don't want it to change

Son made his debut today for W Connection u16 vs North East Stars....Central's loss  ;)

I was planning/hoping to stay away from this discussion and observe from the sidelines....vantage point is sometimes better there. Especially since I once advocated on JW's behalf.

Coops....I hearing loud and clear what you are saying or at least trying to say and I, for one, sincerely appreciate your attempts at objectivity.....

But saying that you're sympathetic toward the TTFF because they have some of your personal friends within or because they did for you, isn't the strongest foot to stand on. By virtue of that reasoning, the 06 guys have right to storm TTFF with swords and guns because of 'what the TTFF did to them'.

I remember defending JW against this bonus dispute to the hilt, but when faced with mountains of facts, the only logical thing to do is to reassess one's position. Blind loyalty has no place in modern times.

I can recognise and even accept that the TTFF are having difficulty to meet their fiscal obligations re:the debt settlement. But being under 'pressure' does not absolve them from what the court mandated.

After re-examining my position on this and other matters relating to JW/TTFF, it is crystal clear exactly how much JW held back our football. Granted he did great things, but our football was set back years at a minimum.

The only way to move forward positively is to rid ourselves of his fingerprints as much as we can. Pay the boys....let football get a clean slate and lets move forward.

Its just my opinion, but if these guys were half as greedy or vindictive as they have been made out to be, there easily could have been no Gold Cup or women's U20 world cup close call......just sayin

« on: January 20, 2014, 06:17:41 AM »
We need to grow up. Being realistic about how we played is by no means negative. how childish is that.  :frustrated: If we want to grow as a footballing nation then we have to be able to step back and objectively look at how we manage to squander the easiest qualifying path to a WC. This is why we can't improve because just as posters are chastising others for calling like it is so to Anton Corneal will return to T&T and everything in the Technical Report (if they do in fact write one) will say how we gave our best and it's a hard luck. This is not good enough people. Why can't a poster say we were not good enough on the night?

Our play and coaching was immature. We did not know how to handle leading 2-0, 3-1 and see out the game. We started seeing Canada this summer, forgetting that the game is 90+ minutes. We were up 3-1, but anyone could have seen that we were being dominated by CR. They were patient and calculated, they showed great maturity in the game, creating combination after combination in and around our box only to be saved by the offside call.  They had a plan and they stuck to it. How many 4 and 5 passing sequence can we point to in the middle to attacking third that we had?

We jumped out to a 3-1 lead and all our best players disappeared, whilst their best players grew in confidence.  During the early rounds we celebrated the wins, but neglected to look at how we got those wins. On the field it was not convincing. The 2 tests we had we showed that we could not cope. Not because the girls cannot play or lack talent but mainly because of those at the helm, even more so Anton Corneal. They coach these girls with inferiority. The preparation is always playing from behind to the US and Mexico, that the score will always be against us, but just do your best.

Look Mexico got 4 from the US, but Mexico was out there trying to dictate the pace, trying to put the US on the back foot. In case we forgot, the Mexican U17 beat Canada and the USA on their way to finishing 1st in the qualification and now their U20s lost in the finals. That's what you call closing the gap.

You all can say I'm negative and that I am talking madness, but keep you all head in the sand and say "we gave it our best". That's for recreational teams, teams that are brought together for social development. This is much more than that, way more than that.

I wonder if the men team had squandered such an opportunity if we would just resign ourselves to say hard luck. You would hear how shitty KJ is and how Bleeder only pulling stones. But is "girls" so that's okay they tried.  :bs:

We will look back on this missed opportunity and say "we shoulda...."

Had to quote Elan's entire post because I think he's spot on.

The skipper, completely disappeared in the second half, tactics were poor, and it showed, at least in my opinion, how poor our coaching is, if at 3-1 up with 20 mins to go in a world cup do or die game, the coaching staff (i.e. big time TD), couldn't or didn't tell the team to see it out. Tired legs and delayed subs?

I liked this particular team, doesn't matter they were a female team, but they showed no heart.

Agree with dinho....don't think Jan is more explosive either. He may command the box a little better, but Marvin is the better keeper. I noticed that he rarely gives up rebound chances....his saves, as spectacular as some are, send the ball wide or out of play....rarely back into the path of an opposing player. That to me is one of the more subtle things that separates the keepers...

Sad to hear if true, kinda shattered the image for Central a bit!

If you believe all that you read. I refuse to comment when people hear one side of a story and automatically accept it as gospel.
I've been around long enough now to earn a little respect and Sancho more so.
I'm just surprised that people automatically dismiss feedback from posters like Diamondtrim, who I've only met once, yet repeat feedback from someone who is emotionally involved and disappointed.
Still, that's life.

Doesn't matter how many times we met FS....my feedback was honest...even though allyuh aint pick mih son...Philbert Jones @ WConnection saw him play and wants him...so take dat!!!!! Lol

Usually don't chime in on post match reports and analysis, but felt compelled after the game last night.

Its either Hart is a hell of a coach, or TT has more talent than I give us credit for. Isn't last night's squad supposed to be an 'understrength' team?

Though they made mistakes here and there, and we have to take into consideration JA's team was allegedly understrength as well, I think the team did extremely well.

Haven't seen a TT team keep shape like that since Leo.

Boucaud is my type of player. Simple, neat and keeps the ball moving. His positioning was very intelligent last night.

Guerra is a lovely #10. Not shy to shoot or take players on, and he is no coward defensively either.

Dis Winchester boy.....he's 19 I hear. In two years, after he improves his crossing and decision making,  he'll be real trouble. Love his speed and confidence. Who found him?

Over the past 3/4 games I find myself warming to KJ. His control is still poor, finishing still weak, but his link up play seems to have improved a lot. He really is a handful for defences and creates space for his teammates.

Abu Bakr like he came out to give Hart a selection headache. He wasn't playing in the back. Strong in the tackle and generally looked solid.

Ahhh Carlos.....thanks alot for the service, but you didn't look good at all last night. Hope it was just last night, but age has a way it catches up to all of us.

Seeing good things if we continue in this vein.

Should be dominating the Caribbean again soon....then we'll see what we can do in Concacaf
