Entertainment & Culture Discussion / Re: Meet SuperBlue
« on: February 28, 2013, 01:28:29 PM »
I really love this thread.....

Some context:  I dont like Carnival....let me rephrase, I love our culture...Trinbagonians amaze me sometimes with their laissez faire attitudes while showing complete devotion to our celebrations, be it religious or whatever. But Carnival is simply too much for me. In fact, I usually try to be out of the country for the week before and the week after Carnival.

But for some reason I've always loved Superblue. My wife tells me I'm an old man trapped in a young man's body.....because a Saturday morning meets us with 'Rebecca' and 'Ethel' blaring from the stereo.  When I play FIFA on the ps3, the intro music is 'Soca Baptist'. His music was exactly that.....music.

My wife is a Carnival lover....every single year she begs me to play mas. My response? When Superblue comes back I'll play.

Not expecting him to return, in November I booked flights to Miami, New York and London so I could get away for Carnival 2013. Then I heard the bell.....then the words...'Super, Super, Super'. What was I to do? Tickets done buy....I had arranged to see Man Utd, Liverpool and Arsenal play and train....informed a few friends and relatives I'll be passing through.....but dis blasted bell ringin in my head.

I've made some wonderful decisions in my life and I've made some that I wish I could have the chance to do over.....I missed the return of the King. I missed his (re)crowning and I missed the lessons he would have taught all dem jokey soca men. I'm sorry Blue......No amount of Nani, Giggs, Scholes, Gerard, Suarez, Cazorla, Arteta or Wilshere could ever hold a torch to you in my book......next year please God I won't make the same mistake

Football / Re: "You'll Never Walk Alone" - de Official Liverpool thread
« on: February 19, 2013, 11:18:21 AM »
If anything like this has been posted before, please accept my apologies....I aint goin thru 70+ pages

I recently had the opportunity and privilege to observe the inner workings of a few of the top (and not so top) clubs in the UK and was really amazed at what I saw.

My take on my Liverpool (Anfield) experience:

Liverpool is one of the biggest and most storied clubs, not only in England, but in Europe and throughout the world. It's history is near unparalleled. For the Liverpool fan, a visit to Anfield supposed to bring out a sense of pride and fulfillment...joy of being privy to this great club. For the neutral man, the man who loves his football, the man who sees football and its associated advances, even the man remotely familiar with the game and its intricacies, Anfield brings about different feelings.

For a club that aspires to once again conquer England and Europe, Anfield leaves a lot to be desired. To put it mildly....Anfield is pathetic. It's facilities are poor, shabby and downright depressing. Don't get me wrong, Liverpool's training facilities are absolutely remarkable and top notch....but games aren't played there are they. Imagine prepping for a date with your gorgeous best girl friend and then having the actual date with a monster. Broken tables in the meeting rooms, a severely cramped press room that has low, HDC-type ceilings, a dressing room that seems plucked straight out of the 70's are the first to grab the eye. The players' tunnel can barely hold the two teams, one dugout houses both teams, separating them only by 2 or 3 feet, wooden seats....Anfield is stuck in the era when Liverpool was dominant. Staff there try to pass off these deficiencies as the club being a traditional one, staying true to its history and the pure love of the game. Truth be told, the club comes off as being cheap and woefully out of date. Hospitality is poor....marketing more so.

I've been to the top clubs in England and I've never seen broken tables in any of them....least of all displayed to the public. It's trophy room and museum are just sad really...poor floor planning, dank and musky....exposed ceiling work.....just pathetic.

A top player cannot be induced to sign for Liverpool if Anfield is used as an attraction....definitely not the modern day footballer who is exposed to infinitely superior facilities.

Why Liverpool has been in such a decline over the years? The answer begins with Anfield. Sure they'll have the odd win and good European run....but their home record gets worse by the season....why? The answer begins at Anfield.

A new stadium is on the horizon for Liverpool.....perhaps that may be the club's saving grace.......

Doh talk for Mr. Diamondtrim.. I hope he eh planning to come back with that leaky Real Madrid defence again because i will properly deal with that case. We had some good battles, but he eh ready for the Chelsea locomotive yet.

One thing, i go real miss the Drogs in FIFA 13. I hear Chelsea good but once the ball reach Torres is pressure.

nice history diamondtrim.

what happen to yuh football life after university? u ever consider a pro career or is a pro now?

I like to consider myself a realist....was told by a couple of coaches that I could have made it as a pro, but I never bought into the hype. I was a lazy player...never liked training, can't remember ever being truly fit, hated gym work, only learnt to properly use my left foot in college, fell in love with crown/kennedy fried chicken and 2.99 chinese food (all NY men would know what I'm talking about) and frankly used my football talent to get a proper education. To be honest, I just didn't have the discipline required. And besides, I always felt myself to be more of an academic than an athlete.

SSFL spoils players on so many levels and its only when we get exposed to a higher level we realise. In school in Trinidad I was allowed so many indulgences that when I recount them I can't help but laugh. I was allowed to juggle the ball and practice free kicks while the rest of the team ran laps. I was allowed great input in team selection. Even my girlfriend was allowed to leave school lunch time with the football team when we had an away game. I remember going to her class one morning at around 11 and saying "Miss, we leavin in lil while, Kim hadda organise". Miss response was 'Ok'. On weekend games she would come in the maxi and a player would either have to find his way to the ground or get a drop from a teacher or something. Please bear in mind that all these allowed indulgences were at a school that had a piss poor football team.

I went abroad with the same big player attitude, only to discover that my small size put me at an immediate disadvantage, technique, strength and fitness were more important than skill, and big player attitude was something you could only earn after your junior year perhaps.

I got married to the same girl that used to leave school early, had kids and settled down. I play the occasional minor league and fete match games, and I'm good with that. Now there's nothing better than my son's teacher who was an old classmate, telling my son that his daddy was a big player............

« on: September 13, 2012, 05:49:44 AM »
OK then, who in concacaf during the time of donovan (his contemoprary) have more goals and more assist, especially assist?

Dred me eh going and research no setta stats... Donovan played 99% of his career in friggin MLS and barely make a note in the Bundesliga, and had a one nice loan spell for Everton.  Chicharito has been better on a bigger stage... good enough fuh me.
Dais ah fackin cop out son.  the stats is where it's @, no matter where you played. just look @ latapy, he played most his yrs in scotland, whereas stern john who played most his career in MLS and the championship, compare those guys to KJ and KJ can't come close, even though he played most his career in the prem.

aurtis whitley forinstance, beenhakker played this guy who only featured in the pro league, moreso than samuel, jason scotland and latapy and he was a pro league player, as ah matter of fact wim rijsbergen said that if whitley was born in brazil he would be just as good as ronaldinho, so where you play has nothing to do with ah man's ability.

and as for donovan, though he didn't make any impact in germany, he continued to improve with age and time, and IMO, still is one of the best players in concacaf, not saying that hernandez would never get there, give him time, he's just out the box, he never did what landon did in the span of his career.

PS: doh sleep on MLS eh bro, in ah few yrs that would be ah top league, trust.

Really?????

At the end of my fifth form year I had done my SAT's and was actively pursuing education options abroad (never liked UWI). I sent out maybe 15 or 20 applications to a variety of colleges and believe it or not, got a response from every one. Of course, not all were acceptance letters. I had included recommendations from my football coaches and got some interest from a few colleges as well. However, they wanted more than just recommendations, they asked for video. My SAT score was good enough for two college coaches to indicate that they would recommend I get a partial academic schol for the first year and if I was good enough they would give me a full athletic schol for the next three years.

Anyway, young love and the necessary success at CXC convinced me to do my A'Levels before going further with my search for an overseas education. By the end of lower six I had received 3 solid offers (academic schols) and had decided on which college I would have attended.

As fate would have it, TTT had aired one of my school's SSFL games live on tv and I had a beast of a game. Can't say who exactly saw it but I got a call from Quincy University in Chicago who indicated they had someone in Trinidad who would organise a scrimmage and report back to them. Their guy?: Hannibal Najjar.

At the scrimmage I met Ruskin Mark who was a sports anchor at TTT at the time and he said he remembered me from the game that was aired. We chatted for a few weeks after and I got confirmed offers from Quincy, St Mary's University in Texas and Concordia College, Alabama. Ruskin's contact was at Concordia.

Quincy offered half schol for the first year and full for the next 3. I couldn't accept because the half my parents would have been responsible for was almost 13k usd. St Mary's offered a full ride, including a stipend, but Texas was reeling from a hate crime where a black dude was dragged from the back of a truck, so I had no desire to go anywhere near there. I chose Concordia literally a week before I left Trinidad.

Concordia had just started their soccer programme and were in the NAIA. We were treated like kings. We were included in a parade through the streets of Selma and we even signed autographs. Mia Hamm was part of the parade as well. The school didn't have a confirmed schedule but we played against schools like University of Mobile, Auburn University, Middle Tennessee State etc. The attraction of being a part of the beginning of the soccer programme was a big part of me choosing there. Its good to know that Concordia is doing quite well now.

I left after semester, and received an offer from St Francis College in NY. St Francis was the NCAA div 1 North East Conference Champions at the time. I was recruited personally by their coach. Just phone calls and school programme info. Nothing like being asked to join the conference champs and playing with guys from Serbia, Albania, Africa, etc. It was a great cultural experience.

There's a big difference between NCAA divisions. Division 1 programmes get more money and coverage and are very stringent with their rules. Imagine we were allowed to practice for only 2 weeks prior to the season. NAIA didn't even have age limits. At Concordia there was a 29 year old dude on the team.

The thing with ST Francis was that the school didn't have dorms so ALL students had to have their own housing arrangement. Not a bad deal for trinis who always have some relative in NY.

Eventually I left and finished at St Johns U. Recruited by a fellow Trini who simply said that the coach was looking for players.

I always had fellow Trinis around so my experience wasn't bad at all. The only negative was the weather. Winter is a stinking bitch....but makes the ladies quite horny. I always had to slow down when talking in class as the professors barely understood me. So i began to understand why alot of Trinis develop accents after a while abroad. Once I was asked if I'm speaking spanish. But my favorite part was that Americans didn't understand what 'hull yuh mudda c..." meant....I loved yelling it at them. They would just smile.

Fatima continues to not "play the game."

It might end up hurting we.

VB

So true...

Since Fatima's previous principal left, they have been in a football decline. Doesn't seem like the present principal is as interested in the sport. Don't get me wrong, I firmly believe in student/athlete before athlete/student, but if a guy has the qualifications to get into form 6 why not take him back? Unless he was a terror.

Fatima needs to 'play the game'

might be jumping the gun here, considering the second part hasn't been published yet, but its either the author purposely published inaccurate history or edited the story to make it a bit more dramatic.

JW as Min of Natl Sec................Love it!!!!!

Thing is, that throughout the numerous posts prior, no one put has put forward even a suggestion as to who else should or could have been placed there. A member did ask and up to now has been ignored.
Blind hatred towards JW......

On another, yet related note, TT is a country that has no respect or allegiance to 'due diligence'. It is our culture and has been so entrenched for years upon years.......Yes, some of us would like it to change, but the painful reality is that the majority of us prefer to post on forums and hide behind the cloak of anonymity. Action ALWAYS speaks louder than words (and due diligence if I may add). And that is why Jack is a boss. His modus operandi is to allow the population to wallow in the pits of near resignation, then swoop in and take action, completely disregarding the process. The result? The creation of a man of action, a man who cares not for the intricacies of bureaucracy, a man who either does or doesn't. No half assing.

We, and I mean the world at large, lap it up in huge portions.

It appears that some folks sincerely believe that JW Fifa scandals will have some inevitable adverse effect on our local economy or international trade....nothing could be further from the truth. Wake up and smell the coffee ppl.....JW laughs while some of you berate him, chide him for his moral misdeeds and convict him of unproven crimes.

His life definitely has been a legacy of success....for HIM and HIS family. He doesn't have to give any other person jack...(pun intended)

That he is a Bernie Madoff is a poor statement, rooted in personal dislike for the man. Understandable, but ignorant nevertheless.

I know it might sound like I defending Jack, far from it...but you should step back, admire and be amazed at a master tactician/smart man at work. I ent think the world has seen nuttin quite like he. The man real good.

Ah want to believe that this is what fellas like Diamondtrim, Jack a$$ Horner and mih cousin in Diego does applaud.   Dey know he is a blasted crook, but he real good, so far, at covering his tracks.   And we wonder why the place in a mess.   We applauding when the crook get away.  Ah feel it have something to do with the fact he is a "successful" black man.

I black too and he is a blasted shame not just to the black race, to the human race......*spits on him* nasty, stinking, dutty vampire.....

Edit:

FS, I just realised you and I zeroed in on the exact same thing in Touches' post.  Great minds think alike..... ;) ;D

Sugar...its not that I applaud JW's alleged crookedness....in fact, in most scenarios I frown upon it; the stark reality of the matter is that I applaud Jack's machinations in a world that very few of us comprehend, far less manoeuvre in.

To assume, or even hope, that such machinations should be premised on honesty or a high degree of morality, is to be naive, ignorant and innocent...traits that do not serve one in good stead in the aforementioned world.

I've long indicated that JW should be applauded for his ascended position in the most powerful organisation on earth, his contribution to CONCACAF and CFU, and his unwavering committment to the upward social and financial mobility of himself and family. How he achieved such is a matter for an entirely different debate.

Some footballers use skill, others strength and some speed of thought. Whether these skillsets produce the desired results is entirely up to them. We can sit on the sideline and deride JW and berate him for his percieved thievery.....but the irrefutable fact is that he has only been tried in the court of public opinion, and the punishment for such a conviction is apparently political power. When JW has been deinitively proven to be what most of the forumites believe him to be, and not the subject of vendettas, innuendo, and accusations from spurned professional lovers, only then will I refer to him as crook, bandit, thief etc...........

But what we don't know was if the cash that was distributed was brought into the country by Bin Hamman himself.

Jack self coulda get the cash for him through whatever means down here and no laws could have been broken.

What is the issue? That Bin Hamman give away money? That if he did walk with it in a suitcase after hopping off his private jet he was supposed to tick the lil box at the back of the immigration form and say Yeah I declaring this?

Breds them men operating in a different world, they ent chupid and in this "nayshun" they above the law.

Jack Warner owns the COE.....furthermore, he owns it legally through his myriad of companies.

There is a marked diference in what FIFA wants to do and what they can do. And as is par for the course with all things FIFA, public pronouncements will be made and little or no action will follow.

General Discussion / Re: Ian Alleyne tntcrimewatch.org
« on: April 21, 2012, 05:18:57 AM »
Although Ian Alleyne is intensely annoying, arrogant, self serving and his programme is certainly the most amateur television production I have seen on "National Television" (example- this evening a caller phoned in, said "Good Evening" and then Alleyne proceeded to discuss a different subject and even told viewers to call in and all the while the caller was still on the line, then he cut them off without them saying a word!)

However, Crimewatch is essential viewing. If only Channel 6 would insist that the director runs the show and that there are production meetings to decide on what can and shouldn't be shown. I really want to support Ian Alleyne because, God knows, someone has to keep the police in check, and he certainly has an impressive record of obtaining results.
He just needs to recognise that he is not a policeman, he is not a forensic pathologist and he's not a trauma counsellor.

That said, although I think his broadcasting of the video in question was in extremely poor taste, this arrest was not only uncalled for, it was poorly conceived and carried out.

Totally agree
