Warner to break maxi monopoly
SHALIZA HASSANALI

Works and Transport Minister Jack Warner will soon request Cabinet’s permission to open up the rights of maxi taxi drivers, thereby bringing an end to the monopoly that now exists. Warner made the disclosure on September 24, stating something needed to be done about maxi taxi drivers who hold commuters to ransom whenever there is a flood in Port-of-Spain or a heavy downpour, refusing to cover the entire route which they are licenced to work. The drivers, Warner said, are also in the habit of making short trips, charging passengers the full fare. The rights limit the number of maxi taxis plying the six routes in T&T. There are approximately 5,000 maxi taxi drivers in T&T.

A 25-seater maxi is priced at $586,000 while a 12-seater can be purchased at $300,000. In light of this situation, Warner said, he will seek Cabinet’s permission to open up the rights of the maxi taxis “so anyone can buy a maxi taxi now. The monopoly held by a few will no longer exist. These guys (drivers) will know that they can’t do that because people will not travel with them. I am going to deal with that.” Warner said some people were trying to hold the country to ransom, stating that the ones who often bear the brunt of hardships are the poor. For years, Warner said, the demand for maxi taxis had far outweighed its supply.

Express lane, traffic wardens coming

To ease the bottlenecks on the Churchill-Roosevelt Highway, Warner plans to open an express lane for maxis and buses only, and will flood the nation’s streets with 300 traffic wardens this month to assist the police in restoring law and order. “I promise to solve all this (flooding and transportation woes) before this Christmas. So help me God. This is my most worrying concern. If I survive this ministry for five years I am telling you I will live forever.” Having met and consulted with several flood experts both locally and internationally since taking up office, Warner said he has to be selective in who he chooses. “I want to ensure that when I make a decision it is in the public’s interest.”

Phillip slams the move

Yesterday, president of the Route II Maxi Taxi Association Linus Phillip bashed the idea, stating that this move would overcrowded the roads. “This could have serious implications. You talking about people livelihood. If Warner do something like this he is opening up people to launder money. Decisions are being made without our consultation,” Phillip fumed.
Phillip defended some drivers who sometimes “go short,” stating that this only happens when the roads become impassible. “I know there are drivers who are guilty of going short but we have been pleading to meet with the Transport Commissioner to enforce rules and regulations since the association has no control to discipline drivers. There are indeed loopholes in the system which we have to correct, but blaming us will not solve the problem.”

Legalising PH cars...

Opening the pandora's box to chaos
Govt’s move leaves insurers upset
SHALIZA HASSANALI AND ANIKA GUMBS-SANDIFORD

Government’s plans to legalise the operations of private hired (PH) cars in T&T is guaranteed to open a pandora’s box. The warning comes from the country’s first and longest standing chartered insurer, Bertrand Doyle, who on Thursday called on Minister of Transport Jack Warner, the man behind the sudden move, to rethink his position on legalising PH taxis to deal with the chronic transportation problems. Doyle believes the solution to the transport woes lie in a reliable public transport service and not making the wrong right. “How could they legalise something that is illegal? If this is the way they want to go, let the Government legalise cocaine and marijuana too,” Doyle fumed. On whether the Motor Vehicles Act would have to be amended, Doyle said there was a slim chance of this happening since all Commonwealth countries were governed under the same Act. “But, if they do that it will be opening up a pandora’s box.”

Insurance will be null and void

Doyle said from the minute the Government legalises PH taxis “the insurance of those motors vehicles will become null and void” because the cars would no longer be used for social, domestic and pleasure purposes, but to transport passengers. “That will be the first headache for the drivers.” Doyle said there were several types of PH drivers ranging from the occasional, night, after hours and those who work peak time. “I am surprised that Warner did not contact the insurance firms for their views.” Doyle said he knows for a fact that drivers who were issued taxi badges over the years have since turned their cars from H to P because they pay less insurance premiums, are not restricted to certain streets and are not required to have their cars inspected.

“Even though they make the operation legal, some drivers who do not possess a driver’s permit, insurance or have a road worthy car will still operate on the roads. You would not be able to stop them.” While some insurance firms who sell motor insurance were not willing to insure the PH taxis, Doyle stated that the ones that offer coverage will have difficulty in issuing claims. He challenged the Auxillary Transport Association(ATA), the umbrella body for PH drivers in T&T, to name the insurance firm they are negotiating with, saying he was sure “it would not be a high grade insurance firm.” Doyle, who works as an insurance consultant, said he could not understand why Government was condoning drivers who were operating illegally since it was a moral hazard.

Problems collecting accident claims

A leading underwriter at an insurance firm in Port-of Spain said he was totally against the proposal because it would only encourage people who have vehicles that are not road worthy to apply for a PH licence. Stating that while it was mandatory for H drivers to get a certificate of good character, have their cars inspected and go through a pre qualification to get a taxi badge, the PH drivers may not face this, which can lead to insurance firms receiving claims which they never meant to write. “Passengers would have problems collecting claims if they get involved in an accident.” The underwriter believes the Government went about it the wrong way. “Why can’t they enforce these people to get a taxi badge and register the vehicle as a taxi?”
The underwriter said if PH taxis were legalised this can lead to the Insurance Act being amended. While the Act stipulates what kind of vehicles can be used as a taxi “you would now have to change the legislation to say that the Act now includes PH cars.” If the Act is not amended, the underwriter said passengers travelling in PH taxis “would not be able to collect any claims.”

ATA: It will create 60,000 jobs

President of the ATA, Gerard Whyms forsees the opening up of 60,000 jobs if Government gives the drivers the green light to ‘pull bull’.
Between last Thursday and Friday, Whyms said approximately 200 PH drivers from Point Fortin had registered with ATA. ATA has 500 registered drivers, some of whom are part time drivers. Whyms admitted that some of the drivers had minor infractions with the law and were not be able to obtain a certificate of good character, while others could not land themselves permanent jobs. “There are deeper social issues to be looked at. We can’t leave these drivers to the wolves.”

‘Not condoning bandits, rapists’

Whyms, however, assured that their drivers will face a screening process to ensure the passengers’ safety. “We are not condoning bandits and rapists,” he said. The association, Whyms confirmed, will also supply the police with an ATA members listing, while all registered cars will be colour-coded according to the areas they work and drivers will have to adhere to 17 of its rules when on the roads. With regard to insurance coverage, Whyms said ATA was dealing with an insurance company, but refused to give its name. “They will be giving us a blanket coverage to ATA members.” Messages left for Willard P Harris, vice president of the Association of T&T Insurance Company for a comment, were not returned.

“There will be no trial run it’s either on or off.”

In a response yesterday, Works and Transport Minister Jack Warner said consultations regarding legalising PH drivers were well on the way and should be completed before month’s end. “I have a team under the Chief Traffic Planner that is talking to insurance companies and to other stakeholders. I imagine that all this will be finished well before the end of the month,” he said. When asked if the Motor and Vehicle Act will need to be amended, he said, “It doesn’t have to get a parliamentary amendment, it can be done through the Cabinet.” He said he was given that advice by members of the legal fraternity.
“I am awaiting first to see what the consultations come up with and I will take it from there,” he said. Warner said there would be no trial run “it’s either on or off.”

Officer critical after shooting
...kills gunman at home during robbery attempt

Sunday, February 28th 2010

The callousness of criminal elements and their blatant disregard for the lives of citizens and that of law enforcement officers have left a police constable warded in critical condition at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mt Hope, fighting for his life and one of his attackers dead.

Constable Michael Rowley, an officer with six years experience, was shot outside his Tenth Street West, Casselton, Trincity, home around 9.50 p.m. on Friday while liming with a group of people.
Rowley was once attached to the Maracas/St Joseph Police Station and is currently assigned to Special Branch.

His shooter has been identified as Maloney resident Andre Eccles who died at the scene, clutching a gold chain which was swiped off Rowley’s neck. Police reports state that a car drove past the group of limers and parked a short distance away. Eccles emerged with a gun in hand and announced a robbery.

He proceeded to snatch the chain from around Rowley’s neck and then started robbing others in the group. As Eccles proceeded to run away, Rowley withdrew his police-issued firearm and identified himself as a police officer. He then called on Eccles to stop. Eccles immediately turned in the direction of the officer, pointed his firearm and started shooting, Rowley was hit in the stomach.

However, Rowley managed to shoot back, injuring Eccles. The car from which Eccles had emerged, was driven off. Rowley was rushed to hospital where he underwent emergency surgery yesterday afternoon to have the bullet removed. Following the incident, Acting Commissioner of Police James Philbert along with Cpl Learie Figaro and Constable Sunil Ramoutar and other officers visited the scene. A revolver along with three rounds of ammunition was recovered.

Speaking with Sunday Express mere moments after visiting the injured officer at hospital, Philbert appealed for his officers to exercise caution when conducting their duties. ’I have expressed my concern, and though my officers are committed to doing their jobs, they need to be careful and take the necessary lawful action when faced with danger,’ Philbert said.

Adding, ’the manner in which the robbery was conducted; the officer identified himself and the shooter turned around and shot him, says alot that the criminals have no respect for citizens and law enforcement officers,’ Philbert said.

Philbert said following the sequence of events, Rowley had no choice but to use his firearm, and he wished to commend Rowley on his bravery and lamented that had others in the group tried to subdue the shooter, there is no telling what might have occurred. Philbert further said investigations are continuing and officers are working along certain lines in order to apprehend other suspects.

So far for the year, eight persons have been shot dead by officers, and several officers have been attacked during the execution of their duties, the majority of whom were warded at hospitals.

General Discussion / The New UNC Agenda

http://www.trinidadexpress.com/index.pl/article_opinion?id=161590630

The new UNC agenda
William Lucie-Smith
Wednesday, February 3rd 2010

First we must all congratulate Kamla Persad-Bissessar on her outstanding landslide victory in the UNC leadership elections. Many people thought the election would be close, not least because Basdeo Panday had controlled the party apparatus for so long.
Jack Warner and Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj knew that a change of leadership was essential to the future of the UNC and campaigned for change. NACTA’s polls, however, were inexplicably misleading and the final margin of Kamla’s victory was overwhelming. It was a gross humiliation for Panday and proof that he is finished as a force in politics.

Kamla Persad-Bissessar must however be intelligent enough to realise this was a stinging rejection of Basdeo Panday rather than a personal endorsement. It was certainly an endorsement of change and the desire for a unified coherent opposition and the rejection of Panday’s vituperative style that has caused so many rifts in the party. Many correspondents have been giving Ms Persad-Bissessar gratuitous advice including the need to reconcile with the Panday faction and that the COP is now irrelevant. This is poor advice indeed. Mr Panday has been roundly rejected by his own party members and needs to be politely ignored.

Many have joined the bandwagon of praising his long service and contribution to national service. I disagree and believe that he will be remembered as a mountebank populist demagogue of dubious integrity, who contributed little to Trinidad and Tobago. The poor grace with which he took this defeat was on a par with his disgraceful concession speech at the last general election.
Kamla need not worry about the support of the parliamentary party or the Panday faction, because they are now irrelevant and have nowhere to go. Any sensible UNC parliamentarian should respect the democratic vote and now pledge his full support to her and quickly. Those who fail to do so are saying, in effect, that they wish to join Basdeo Panday on the back benches and do not wish to be endorsed as a candidate in any future election. It may take a few days for the penny to drop but they should certainly want to be one of the first eight UNC MPs to declare loyalty to the new democratically elected leader.

This victory however, is only a first step if the true goal is to win a national election. The small minority of the UNC who did not support Kamla will fall into step very quickly. Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj was a very hard-working Attorney General and despite his lack of popular support he would make a good whip once he pledges support to the leader.
However, those who suggest the COP unity talks are now irrelevant are quite wrong. While it is true that many COP supporters will return to the UNC and that COP now has no realistic chance of displacing the UNC, their support is still important. By doing nothing Kamla may get 70 per cent of the COP support that fades away from that party. By achieving a merger (not an alliance) and offering front bench positions to Winston Dookeran and Prakash Ramadhar, Kamla can capture all those 150,000 anti-PNM votes.

If the UNC can successfully merge with the COP and obtain the support of vast majority of COP voters they will become a credible alternative government. This, however, will not be enough to defeat the PNM, who should never be underestimated. In order to win Kamla will have to achieve three further things. First of all she must show herself to be a stateswoman and an inclusive leader quite unlike Mr Panday. Secondly, she must appoint a ’shadow’ cabinet of credible leaders to show the people that there is an alternative government to the PNM. Thirdly she must demonstrate an alternative political philosophy that can differentiate the UNC from the PNM.

In many respects the previous UNC administration performed well, but was brought down by the perception of corruption (since proven at the airport) and internal strife. By concentrating on mega projects and on State ownership of businesses (smelter plants, hotels and international financial centres) the PNM have opened a space for a social democratic party that will eschew state mega projects to favour health care, education and infrastructure and the needs of the people. If Ms Persad-Bissessar can achieve all these things, which are by no means easy, the UNC will be in a position to give the PNM a real run for its money. It may come as a major shock to Patrick Manning that he may be only marginally more popular than Basdeo Panday. It may also be a shock that many people are dissatisfied with the PNM’s performance and their economic policies.

However, they are all waiting for an opposition party that can ’get it together’ before deserting the PNM the way the UNC deserted Basdeo Panday. Ms Persad-Bissessar’s election is only the very first step on a long road, but we will see some very interesting politics in the near future. Kamla and Jack may be an odd couple, but together they make an interesting team.

 :applause: :applause: :applause:

That highlighted part is exactly how I feel.  I does hear people talking about Panday's great legacy and how he was the best PM we ever had and on and on....steups!!!  He was the most vile, unstatesman like drunkard that ever rule over we. Legacy my eye!!!!..... ::) ::)

Brown wins Mass. Senate race in epic upset
GOP victory leaves President Barack Obama's health care overhaul in doubt

BOSTON - In an epic upset in liberal Massachusetts, Republican Scott Brown rode a wave of voter anger to win the U.S. Senate seat held by the late Edward M. Kennedy for nearly half a century, leaving President Barack Obama's health care overhaul in doubt and marring the end of his first year in office.
Addressing an exuberant victory celebration Tuesday night, Brown declared he was "ready to go to Washington without delay" as the crowd chanted, "Seat him now." Democrats indicated they would, deflating a budding controversy over whether they would try to block Brown long enough to complete congressional passage of the health care plan he has promised to oppose.

"The people of Massachusetts have spoken. We welcome Scott Brown to the Senate and will move to seat him as soon as the proper paperwork has been received," said Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev. Massachusetts Secretary of State William Galvin said he would notify the Senate on Wednesday that Brown had been elected.  Sen. Jim Webb, D-Va., said that it would "only be fair and prudent" to suspend votes on the health care bill until Brown is seated.

The loss by the once-favored Democrat Martha Coakley in the Democratic stronghold was a stunning embarrassment for the White House after Obama rushed to Boston on Sunday to try to save the foundering candidate. Her defeat signaled big political problems for the president's party this fall when House, Senate and gubernatorial candidates are on the ballot nationwide.
"I have no interest in sugarcoating what happened in Massachusetts," said Sen. Robert Menendez, the head of the Senate Democrats' campaign committee. "There is a lot of anxiety in the country right now. Americans are understandably impatient."
Brown will become the 41st Republican in the 100-member Senate, which could allow the GOP to block the president's health care legislation and the rest of his agenda. Democrats needed Coakley to win for a 60th vote to thwart Republican filibusters.

The Republican will finish Kennedy's unexpired term, facing re-election in 2012.
Brown won 52 percent to 47 percent. Turnout was exceptional for a special election in January: More voters showed up at the polls Tuesday than in any non-presidential general election in Massachusetts since 1990.

Referendum on Obama?

One day shy of the first anniversary of Obama's swearing-in, the election played out amid a backdrop of animosity and resentment from voters over persistently high unemployment, Wall Street bailouts, exploding federal budget deficits and partisan wrangling over health care.
"I voted for Obama because I wanted change. ... I thought he'd bring it to us, but I just don't like the direction that he's heading," said John Triolo, 38, a registered independent who voted in Fitchburg.
He said his frustrations, including what he considered the too-quick pace of health care legislation, led him to vote for Brown.  For weeks considered a long shot, Brown seized on voter discontent to overtake Coakley in the campaign's final stretch. His candidacy energized Republicans, including backers of the "tea party" protest movement, while attracting disappointed Democrats and independents uneasy with where they felt the nation was heading.

Coakley called Brown conceding the race, and Obama talked to both Brown and Coakley, congratulating them on the race. The Democrat said the president told her: "We can't win them all." Brown will be the first Republican senator from Massachusetts in 30 years.

Even before the first results were announced, administration officials were privately accusing Coakley of a poorly run campaign and playing down the notion that Obama or a toxic political landscape had much to do with the outcome.
Coakley's supporters, in turn, blamed that very environment, saying her lead dropped significantly after the Senate passed health care reform shortly before Christmas and after the Christmas Day attempted airliner bombing that Obama himself said showed a failure of his administration.

Rep. Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, head of the House Democrats' campaign effort, said Coakley's loss won't deter his colleagues from continuing to blame the previous administration.
"President George W. Bush and House Republicans drove our economy into a ditch and tried to run away from the accident," he said. "President Obama and congressional Democrats have been focused repairing the damage to our economy."
At Boston's Park Plaza Hotel, giddy Republicans cheered, chanted "USA" and waved the "tea party" version of the American flag.
Even before Brown won, the grass-roots network fueled by antiestablishment frustrations, sought credit for the victory, much like the liberal MoveOn.org did in the 2006 midterm elections when Democrats rose to power. GOP chairman Michael Steele said Brown's "message of lower taxes, smaller government and fiscal responsibility clearly resonated with independent-minded voters in Massachusetts who were looking for a solution to decades of failed Democrat leadership."

Wall Street watched the election closely. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 116 points, and analysts attributed the increase to hopes the election would make it harder for Obama to make his changes to health care. That eased investor concerns that profits at companies such as insurers and drug makers would suffer.
Across Massachusetts, voters who had been bombarded with phone calls and dizzied with nonstop campaign commercials for Coakley and Brown gave a fitting turnout despite intermittent snow and rain statewide.
Galvin, who discounted sporadic reports of voter irregularities throughout the day, predicted turnout ranging from 1.6 million to 2.2 million, 40 percent to 55 percent of registered voters. The Dec. 8 primary had a scant turnout of about 20 percent.

Voters considered national issues including health care and the federal budget deficits.
Fears about spending drove Karla Bunch, 49, to vote for Brown. "It's time for the country, for the taxpayers, to take back their money," she said.
And Elizabeth Reddin, 65, voted for Brown because she said she was turned off by the Democrat's negative advertisements, saying: "The Coakley stuff was disgusting."

  'Fight until I die'
Panday in election race come January 24

For over 40 years, Opposition Leader Basdeo Panday has devoted his life to politics and, with a fighting spirit and a tone set for battle, he roared on Monday that he is not going anywhere.
In fact, he will be defending his position as political leader of the United National Congress (UNC) at the party’s internal elections come January 24.

If he wins, this means that Panday would be leading the UNC into what may be his last political battle with the PNM at the next general elections.
Panday, who turned 76 this year, slapped all those who have been calling for him to step down as leader, saying he will fight for the people till he dies.

’I want to make an announcement tonight. You see on the 24th of January, I shall be contesting the elections in the UNC as the political leader of the party. And, I want to tell you something, I am going to have a slate also for you to elect an executive that I can work with,’ said Panday.
’...So that those who think or wishing that I will die or that I will commit political suicide, let me tell you here and now, I have no such inclination. I will live until I die, obviously,’ said Panday.
He made the declaration at the party’s weekly Monday night forum at the Spring Village Community Centre, Valsayn. The National Assembly of the UNC is scheduled to meet at the Rienzi Complex, Couva, on Sunday to affirm the January 24 date for the party’s internal elections. Panday joked that people have called on him to go, asking, ’Go where?’ He said other calls have been made for him to ride off into the sunset but quipped, ’Where the horse?’, invoking laughter from the audience.

He said there are those who want his position to become vacant so there would be a vacuum which they would fill to get the support of the people. However, he stressed that he will defend the leadership.
On the issue of unity with the Congress of the People (COP), Panday took to task an article published in this paper where COP member Stephen Kangal accused him (Panday) of double dealing and not being truthful with the date on which he sent a letter of invitation to COP leader Winston Dookeran.

Panday stressed that at the end of the day, even if there was a mix up with the dates, Dookeran received the letter. He re-read the letter where he requested Dookeran to meet to discuss the COP’s document entitled ’The People’s Charter’ as well as constitutional reform. ’I am awaiting a response from Mr Dookeran,’ said Panday. However, he said he believed that Dookeran does not want unity with the UNC and that the people must move to unite from the ground.

Panday said those who wish to lead must be ’willing to sacrifice your career and your life for 40 years...you must go down in the trenches with the people and eat with them, sleep with them and cry with them and when they stand, you stand with them. ’I am convinced there will be no unity from the top...my brothers and sisters, we are going to unite the people from the bottom and we shall win!’

Prior to Panday’s statement about his will to defend the leadership position, he was informing the people of the need for constitutional reform. At this point in time an inebriated man from the audience shouted, ’Kamla is boss!’ Panday, who was visibly irritated by the interruption, said, ’I know they send you for that.’

’Sorry, boss,’ said the man as Panday asked him if he did not just say another person was the boss. The audience had a good laugh.

Football / Dwight Yorke's Mom passes on...
« on: October 15, 2009, 07:02:44 AM »
Yorke's mother passes away.
T&T Express Reports.

Grace Yorke, mother of Trinidad and Tobago's assistant football coach Dwight Yorke, passed away early yesterday morning.

National team manager David Muhammad said yesterday that Yorke's mother had died during the early hours yesterday morning at Medical Associates in St Augustine.

"His brother called me trying to get in contact with him (Dwight), before he was able to get in contact with Dwight on another phone," Muhammad told the Express. "That would have been about 3 a.m."

Yorke's mother, who lived at Canaan in Tobago, had been ailing for some time and had been flown to Trinidad by helicopter for treatment just before her death.

Yorke took his place alongside T&T head coach Russell Latapy and the national team reserves during Trinidad and Tobago's 2010 World Cup qualifier against Mexico on Wednesday night at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Port of Spain. The game ended in a 2-2 draw.

"He is the ultimate professional. On the field his delivery is very loud and confident when he is on the job (as T&T assistant coach)," Muhammad said.

"But around the dinner table he often spoke of her and her condition. Dwight was totally consumed by her state of health over the past few days."

UPDATE:

My hostess has asked that I get numbers by THURSDAY 28TH MAY......
Even if you are still uncertain at this point as to plans for that day....(e.g. yuh eh get boat/plane ticket yet etc.), but may want to come by and lime, please send me a PM anyway.

In your PM, include how many people I should cater for and which meal you prefer...Crab & Dumpling OR Pelau

Tobago based, Trinidad based, Overseas based......I mentioned in another post that I was in the initial stages of planning a lime....while we await actual collection of game tickets, let me throw out some details in the meantime..

I have a friend who lives right around the corner from the Stadium (5 mins walk, 2 mins drive).  She likes lime and bachanal so when I threw out the idea, she agreed to it no problem.
She have ah sweet hand so she agree to cook up some Crab and Dumpling for we.  For the folks who not into Crab, she goh make some Pelau.

Now Crab eh cheap so ah cyar sponsor it and as a result a contribution will be needed.  I can't give a figure as yet until I know the numbers I'm working with...

Ah goh organise the drinks....but feel free to bring something....

So Trinidad based you will get a taste of good ole Tobagonian hospitality and some good food too (for the folks who used to eating KFC regularly, ah hope your bodies doh react unfavourably to good food  ;D)

So food on 6th June before the game taken care of....and drinks too...when we done there we just have to walk, roll, chip, jump, or if you absolutely must, drive to the game...

So if you interested...(actually all yuh eh have ah choice or else.... ;D) PM me.

Football / Swine Flu outbreak in Mexico

Mexico City on alert over swine flu outbreak

Story Highlights
Mexican schools close amid swine flu fears

Swine flu strain has killed dozens in Mexico, affected eight in U.S.

Officials say new strain has resisted some antiviral drugs

(CNN) -- Mexican officials closed all schools Friday in the capital city in an effort to combat the swine flu virus that has killed dozens in Mexico and infected eight people in the United States.

Authorities also closed schools in the state of Mexico in an effort to quell the virus, which has killed at least 68 people in the country, according to a statement from the U.S. Embassy in Mexico.

Other public institutions, including museums and government offices, were also closed in Mexico City.

Mexican soldiers distributed surgical masks to pedestrians and motorists in downtown Mexico City on Friday, according to state-run media.

President Felipe Calderon canceled a scheduled trip to the northern state of Chihuahua and stayed in Mexico City to address concerns on the virus.

"We know the seriousness of the problem," Calderon said. " I know that we will be able to solve this. This is our obligation."

More than 1,000 people have fallen ill in Mexico City in a short period of time, U.S. health experts said.

Health officials said they are concerned that the swine flu virus matches samples of a virus that has killed people in Mexico.

"This situation has been developing quickly," said acting Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Richard Besser. "This is something we are worried about."Watch how Mexico City deals with swine flu outbreak »

New York health officials announced Friday they are testing about 75 students at a Queens school for swine flu after the students exhibited flu-like symptoms this week.

A team of state health department doctors and staff went to the St. Francis Preparatory School in Queens on Thursday after the students reported cough, fever, sore throat, aches and pains.

There have been no confirmed cases of swine flu there. The tests results are expected as early as Saturday.

Eight cases have been reported in the U.S. since Tuesday. Besser said all of the eight U.S. patients have recovered. Watch for more on the U.S. cases »

None of the U.S. patients had direct contact with pigs, though a patient who lives in San Diego had traveled to Mexico, the CDC said.

Besser said officials had not found common exposure or behavior among the eight U.S. patients.

"We have not seen any linkage at all between the cases in Texas and California," he said.

The new virus has genes from North American swine influenza, avian influenza, human influenza and a form of swine influenza normally found in Asia and Europe, said Nancy Cox, chief of the CDC's Influenza Division.

Swine flu is caused by a virus similar to a type of flu virus that infects people every year but is a strain typically found only in pigs -- or in people who have direct contact with pigs.

There have, however, been cases of person-to-person transmission of swine flu, the CDC said. Officials found evidence, for example, that a patient transmitted the disease to health care workers during a 1988 apparent swine flu infection among pigs in Wisconsin.

Experts think coughing, sneezing and contaminated surfaces spread the infection among people. From December 2005 to February of this year, 12 human cases of swine flu were documented.

The new strain of swine flu has resisted some antiviral drugs, officials said.

The human influenza vaccine's ability to protect against the new swine flu strain is unknown, and studies are ongoing, said Dr. Anne Schuchat, the CDC's interim deputy director for science and public health program. There is no danger of contracting the virus from eating pork products, she said.

Canada is also testing samples from Mexico "and has placed a travel alert for travel to Mexico," CDC spokesman David Daigle told CNN by e-mail.

The United States had not issued any travel alerts or advisories by late Friday, but some private companies issued their own warnings.

"Public health officials in Mexico began actively looking for cases of respiratory illness upon noticing that the seasonal peak of influenza extended into April, when cases usually decline in number," said an alert Friday by the International SOS, a medical and consulting company.

Forumites,
This question was asked on I95.5fm this morning and I thought I'd throw it out to you.
Me personally, I am taking careful note of every convulsion that happens around the world.  Also for starters I have no extravagant plans for the christmas season (I haven't in a few years) so I wont be going crazy buying all kinda unecessary stuff.

But overall I don't think collectively as a people we are taking this seriously....
Foreign based feel free to join in and perhaps say how its affecting you.

Price still $50.00.

I know a few folks wanted to get extras but couldn't since the orders were precise.  So based on the time frame I worked with for the last game, I'd say I need to know by this  Friday 6th June  to place another order in time for the game on the 15th.  I'll let you all know if that deadline could be pushed back.

Ok....PM me......

Andre will be interviewing these two players this evening from approx 6:30 pm EST.  Patriot is supposed to drop by the studio to present the players with 2 of the black jerseys.

Andre will also make mention of the SW/WN sweat on Saturday evening.

« on: January 14, 2007, 07:29:50 AM »
People dis is not intended to be a pound Theobald thread.  I don't know the boy.  All I know is what I've seen of him for TnT and it not encouraging.

Ah geniuely curious as to how a player like Theobald could be in de team so long, went to the World Cup and now be appointed Captain, when he is obviously does not bring any thing special or outstanding to the game or team.

So ah on a fact finding mission...

Please someone tell me

When did he first start playing ball (e.g. from school days who did he play for)?
Under which coach de he earn his first International cap?
Over the years has he improved from when he first started playing ball or has he always been mediocre?
What position does he best play in?
What are his strengths?
What are his weaknesses?
How old is he?
Which clubs has he played for?
If not he for Captain then who? And why?...(I know forumites have nominated Hardest and stated why already, but is there anyone else).
Include any other fact y'all might know.

Ah really not out to pound de boy.  Ah just wondering if there was anything in his past that coaches have seen or known to keep him around.  Dats all........ah just curious.
