General Discussion / Wikipedia to black-out English-Language for 24 hours
« on: January 17, 2012, 09:59:50 AM »
What do you think about this action?

Source: http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/English_Wikipedia_anti-SOPA_blackout

To: English Wikipedia Readers and Community
From: Sue Gardner, Wikimedia Foundation Executive Director
Date: January 16, 2012

Today, the Wikipedia community announced its decision to black out the English-language Wikipedia for 24 hours, worldwide, beginning at 05:00 UTC on Wednesday, January 18 (you can read the statement from the Wikimedia Foundation here http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Press_releases/English_Wikipedia_to_go_dark). The blackout is a protest against proposed legislation in the United States — the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the U.S. House of Representatives, and the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA) in the U.S. Senate — that, if passed, would seriously damage the free and open Internet, including Wikipedia.

This will be the first time the English Wikipedia has ever staged a public protest of this nature, and it’s a decision that wasn’t lightly made. Here’s how it’s been described by the three Wikipedia administrators who formally facilitated the community’s discussion. From the public statement, signed by User:NuclearWarfare, User:Risker and User:Billinghurst:

It is the opinion of the English Wikipedia community that both of these bills, if passed, would be devastating to the free and open web.

Over the course of the past 72 hours, over 1800 Wikipedians have joined together to discuss proposed actions that the community might wish to take against SOPA and PIPA. This is by far the largest level of participation in a community discussion ever seen on Wikipedia, which illustrates the level of concern that Wikipedians feel about this proposed legislation. The overwhelming majority of participants support community action to encourage greater public action in response to these two bills. Of the proposals considered by Wikipedians, those that would result in a “blackout” of the English Wikipedia, in concert with similar blackouts on other websites opposed to SOPA and PIPA, received the strongest support.

On careful review of this discussion, the closing administrators note the broad-based support for action from Wikipedians around the world, not just from within the United States. The primary objection to a global blackout came from those who preferred that the blackout be limited to readers from the United States, with the rest of the world seeing a simple banner notice instead. We also noted that roughly 55% of those supporting a blackout preferred that it be a global one, with many pointing to concerns about similar legislation in other nations.

In making this decision, Wikipedians will be criticized for seeming to abandon neutrality to take a political position. That’s a real, legitimate issue. We want people to trust Wikipedia, not worry that it is trying to propagandize them.

But although Wikipedia’s articles are neutral, its existence is not. As Wikimedia Foundation board member Kat Walsh wrote on one of our mailing lists recently,

We depend on a legal infrastructure that makes it possible for us to operate. And we depend on a legal infrastructure that also allows other sites to host user-contributed material, both information and expression. For the most part, Wikimedia projects are organizing and summarizing and collecting the world’s knowledge. We’re putting it in context, and showing people how to make to sense of it.

But that knowledge has to be published somewhere for anyone to find and use it. Where it can be censored without due process, it hurts the speaker, the public, and Wikimedia. Where you can only speak if you have sufficient resources to fight legal challenges, or if your views are pre-approved by someone who does, the same narrow set of ideas already popular will continue to be all anyone has meaningful access to.

The decision to shut down the English Wikipedia wasn’t made by me; it was made by editors, through a consensus decision-making process. But I support it.

Like Kat and the rest of the Wikimedia Foundation Board, I have increasingly begun to think of Wikipedia’s public voice, and the goodwill people have for Wikipedia, as a resource that wants to be used for the benefit of the public. Readers trust Wikipedia because they know that despite its faults, Wikipedia’s heart is in the right place. It’s not aiming to monetize their eyeballs or make them believe some particular thing, or sell them a product. Wikipedia has no hidden agenda: it just wants to be helpful.

That’s less true of other sites. Most are commercially motivated: their purpose is to make money. That doesn’t mean they don’t have a desire to make the world a better place — many do! — but it does mean that their positions and actions need to be understood in the context of conflicting interests.

My hope is that when Wikipedia shuts down on January 18, people will understand that we’re doing it for our readers. We support everyone’s right to freedom of thought and freedom of expression. We think everyone should have access to educational material on a wide range of subjects, even if they can’t pay for it. We believe in a free and open Internet where information can be shared without impediment. We believe that new proposed laws like SOPA and PIPA, and other similar laws under discussion inside and outside the United States — don’t advance the interests of the general public. You can read a very good list of reasons to oppose SOPA and PIPA here, from the Electronic Frontier Foundation. https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2012/01/how-pipa-and-sopa-violate-white-house-principles-supporting-free-speech

Why is this a global action, rather than US-only? And why now, if some American legislators appear to be in tactical retreat on SOPA?

The reality is that we don’t think SOPA is going away, and PIPA is still quite active. Moreover, SOPA and PIPA are just indicators of a much broader problem. All around the world, we're seeing the development of legislation intended to fight online piracy, and regulate the Internet in other ways, that hurt online freedoms. Our concern extends beyond SOPA and PIPA: they are just part of the problem. We want the Internet to remain free and open, everywhere, for everyone.

  Make your voice heard!

Bookmark with Facebook Share on Twitter Share on reddit.com Share on Digg.com

On January 18, we hope you’ll agree with us, and will do what you can to make your own voice heard.

Executive Director, Wikimedia Foundation

Canada best place for business, Forbes says

Forbes has ranked Canada as the best country for business, moving up from fourth spot last year.

The influential U.S. business magazine says the improvement is in part because of the introduction of the harmonized sales tax last year in Ontario and B.C.

Supporters of the HST say the tax helps business cut their input costs and become more efficient with less paper burden. Small business Small business outlook positive, but threats loom

The publication also cites lower corporate and employee tax rates for helping business.

Corporate tax rates were a key campaign issue in the last federal election, while B.C. recently held a referendum in which people voted to repeal the HST.

Forbes praises the Canadian banks for skirting the financial crisis that began in 2007 and emerging as among the strongest the in the world.

Canada beat out New Zealand and Hong Kong, which placed second and third respectively. The U.S. ranked 10th, down from ninth a year ago.

Forbes ranked the countries based on 11 different factors including property rights, innovation, taxes, technology, corruption, freedom, red tape, investor protection and stock market performance.

As an affluent, high-tech industrial society in the trillion-dollar class, Canada resembles the US in its market-oriented economic system, pattern of production, and affluent living standards. Since World War II, the impressive growth of the manufacturing, mining, and service sectors has transformed the nation from a largely rural economy into one primarily industrial and urban. The 1989 US-Canada Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) (which includes Mexico) touched off a dramatic increase in trade and economic integration with the US, its principal trading partner. Canada enjoys a substantial trade surplus with the US, which absorbs about three-fourths of Canadian exports each year. Canada is the US's largest foreign supplier of energy, including oil, gas, uranium, and electric power. Given its great natural resources, skilled labor force, and modern capital plant, Canada enjoyed solid economic growth from 1993 through 2007. Buffeted by the global economic crisis, the economy dropped into a sharp recession in the final months of 2008, and Ottawa posted its first fiscal deficit in 2009 after 12 years of surplus. Canada's major banks, however, emerged from the financial crisis of 2008-09 among the strongest in the world, owing to the financial sector's tradition of conservative lending practices and strong capitalization. During 2010, Canada's economy grew only 3%, due to decreased global demand and a highly valued Canadian dollar.

General Discussion / London Riots

Community activist Sharon Grant: "Stay off the streets... enough is enough"

London Riots

Riot police have again been deployed to the streets of London as violence broke out for a third day.

Police have clashed with rioters in Hackney and vehicles have been set on fire in Peckham and Lewisham.

It follows two nights of violence over the weekend following the police shooting of a man in Tottenham.

London's mayor Boris Johnson is cutting short his holiday to return to the capital as more than 200 people have been arrested and 35 officers injured.

Home Secretary Theresa May also returned early from holiday to meet Acting Metropolitan Police (Met) Commissioner Tim Godwin and other senior officers.
'Totally unacceptable'

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Stephen Kavanagh said they discussed the police response to the violence.

He said: "They were looking at preparations for tonight to make sure any violence is dealt with quickly."

In response to the violence Mrs May said: "The riots in Tottenham on Saturday night and the subsequent disturbances in other parts of London are totally unacceptable."

She paid tribute to the bravery of police officers and urged local communities "to work constructively with the police to help them bring these criminals to justice".

She said at least 215 people have been arrested and 25 people charged following the violence.

A peaceful protest in Tottenham on Saturday over the fatal shooting by police of Mark Duggan, 29, was followed by violence which spread into Sunday.

A candlelit vigil is due to be held at The High Cross in Tottenham, between 19:00 and 20:00 BST.

A spokesman for Mr Johnson said the mayor would be "back in London tomorrow lunchtime".
'Significant resources'

A BBC journalist said the latest violence started in Mare Street, Hackney, when a man was stopped and searched by police but nothing was found.

About eight riot vans have been drafted in and there are up to 200 police officers in riot gear in the Hackney area.

Groups of people began attacking the police at about 16:20 BST, throwing rocks and a bin at officers.

Here at Hackney Central the mood is extremely tense.

A line of riot police is confronting people, some of them masked. Police helicopters are flying low overhead.

Some of the youths tried to rush the police line, they were throwing rocks. The police pushed back, sending the crowds running down Mare Street.

I saw some of the rioters pulling at the metal shutter of a shop which had closed early.

Traffic is backed up, buses are stopped, most of them are empty. Some buses have been hit by stones.

Police cars were also being smashed by youths, who were armed with wooden poles and metal bars.

Looters also smashed their way into shops, including a JD sports store, before police lines dispersed the group.

Planks of wood taken from a lorry were then hurled towards riot officers.

Trains are not stopping at Hackney Central and buses are being diverted from the area.

Violence has broken out in Peckham High Street with rioters smashing shop windows and attacking buses.

There are reports of similar scenes in nearby Lewisham.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Stephen Kavanagh said there were "significant resources" on the streets, with a third more officers on duty than on Sunday.

He said: "What we can see is that the Metropolitan Police are getting police officers there in numbers.

"When we have large numbers of criminals intent on that type of violence, we can only do that, get lots of officers there quickly and try to protect local businesses and local people."

HOW TO BE A GRACIOUS BITCH

Jennifer's wedding day was fast approaching. Nothing could dampen  her excitement - not even her parent's nasty divorce.

Her mother had found the PERFECT dress to wear, and would be the best-dressed mother-of-the-bride ever!

A week later, Jennifer was horrified to learn that her father's  new, young wife had bought the exact same dress as her mother!

Jennifer asked her father's new young wife to exchange it, but she refused.     “Absolutely not! I look like a million bucks in this dress, and I'm wearing it,” she replied.

Jennifer told her mother who graciously said, ''Never mind sweetheart. I'll get another dress. After all, it's your special day.''

A few days later, they went shopping, and did find another gorgeous dress for her mother.

When they stopped for lunch, Jennifer asked her mother, ''Aren't you going to return the other dress? You really don't have another occasion where you could wear it."

Her mother just smiled and replied, ''Of course I do, dear.....I'm wearing it to the rehearsal dinner the night BEFORE the wedding.''

On the theme of 450 ...

Nagrota, April 26, 2011

http://www.thehindu.com/news/states/other-states/article1769802.ece

Around 450 militants staged in training camps and launching pads across the Line of Control (LoC) are waiting to infiltrate into Jammu and Kashmir, an Army official said today.

“As per intelligence reports, there are about 42 training camps across the LoC. 450 odd terrorists are lodged in camps and launching pads, and staged for infiltration,” General Officer Commanding (GOC), 25 Infantry Division, Maj Gen Om Prakash told reporters at the sidelights of the Amam Jyoti rally here.

Infiltration attempts will increase with the melting of snow as per analysis of past militant methods and activities along the LoC, he said, adding that army is well prepared to meet the challenge.

“We are aware of their designs. We are prepared for it. I assure you that we will foil their designs and all attempts,” he said.

Regarding the militants operating in hinterlands of the State, the GOC said that nearly 200 militants are operating inside the south of Pir Panchal region.

“They are all terrorists. We are regularly getting inputs of their movement. The backbone of the militancy in south of Pir Panchal has been broken,” he said.

The rest will be wiped out in due course of time, the GOC said.

Zero-infiltration has been achieved along the LoC in south of Pir Panchal in Jammu and Kashmir, he said.

General Discussion / Evolution Weekend
« on: February 09, 2011, 08:03:53 AM »
Appreciating Religion and Science on Evolution Weekend

Michael Zimmerman, Ph.D., Founder, The Clergy Letter Project

For the sixth time, hundreds of religious congregations on six continents will participate in an event designed to demonstrate that the most exciting scientific findings pose no threat to deeply held religious belief. Indeed, the leaders and members of these congregations recognize that as science teaches us more about how the natural world functions, their faith becomes stronger rather than weaker. And, although there are some who find it difficult to accept, participants are fully comfortable embracing the basic principles of science without having to forsake the most important aspects of their faith.

The weekend of Feb. 11-13 is the sixth annual Evolution Weekend, an event sponsored by The Clergy Letter Project, an organization of more than 14,000 clergy members and scientists. In addition to demonstrating that religion and science can comfortably coexist, the event was created to achieve a number of additional important goals.

Promoters of Evolution Weekend want to create a space to explore the relationship between religion and science. They want to elevate the "dialogue" on the subject that has devolved into sound bites with shouts claiming that people must choose between religion and science passing as "discourse." They also want to demonstrate that it is possible to truly discuss complex issues, issues that have divided many, with sincerity and respect. Finally, they want to prove to all who are willing to take notice, that those fundamentalists who claim to be speaking on behalf of religion are not speaking for thousands of clergy and the religions they represent.

Along these lines, it is well worth noting that Evolution Weekend participants come from across the full breadth of the religious and political spectrum. Some are from our largest cathedrals while others are from tiny rural parishes. A wide variety of races and ethnicities are represented. Males and females, old and young, conservatives and liberals are all taking part in Evolution Weekend. Christians from a host of denominations, as well as Jews and Muslims are all participating. Evolution Weekend has become an opportunity for such a diverse group of people to come together and celebrate what they have in common: love for their religion and respect for science.

The name and date of Evolution Weekend were selected to help achieve yet another goal of The Clergy Letter Project: to rehabilitate the "E" word -- Evolution.

Ever since the Scopes Trial in 1925, evolution has been under attack by those who think it is more important to promote their narrow religious perspective than to understand the natural world. In the immediate aftermath of the Scopes Trial, virtually all traces of evolution vanished from American science textbooks and evolution remained missing until the early 1960s, when Americans realized that Soviet science education was fast outpacing American science education.

Creationists, in the name of religion, first outlawed the teaching of human evolution and then, when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that unconstitutional, they began to use a number of ruses to promote their religious doctrines by claiming they were in favor of freedom on inquiry. They pretended to turn their religion into science by calling it "creation science" and when that too was ruled unconstitutional they changed the name again and promoted "intelligent design." The U.S. courts also ruled that strategy unconstitutional. Despite all of these legal setbacks, creationists have kept up their relentless attack on evolution, the most important concept in all of biology. It has been termed a religion. It has been portrayed as nothing more than a "theory." And it has been characterized, by those with precious little biological background, as pseudoscientific claptrap.

Despite the lack of intellectual and scientific substance to the attacks on evolution, the constant refrain from creationists that evolution is responsible for virtually all of modern society's ills has largely shaped the public's perception of the issue. Large segments of the public, ignorant of both basic biology and common theology, reject evolution believing that it is bad science and contrary to their religious beliefs. Even as scientists, building upon the principles of evolutionary theory, make the most astounding breakthroughs in the understanding of the human genome, leading to medical advances previously only dreamed possible, creationists work tirelessly to keep evolution from being taught in our public schools. Most politicians are scared to endorse this basic biological principle fearing a backlash in the name of religion.

Evolution Weekend is attempting to change all of that. By being celebrated on the weekend closest to the birth of Charles Darwin (Feb. 12, 1809), the founder of the modern view of evolution, Evolution Weekend purposefully brings attention to the single issue that religious fundamentalists find most abhorrent. Participants are not looking to deify Darwin, however. Instead, they are simply attempting to demonstrate that his ideas, reshaped enormously in the 152 years since he published On the Origin of Species, are important to a modern worldview and are fully compatible with modern religious teachings. By doing this, they are proudly taking active steps to publicly define religion in a positive manner.

The clergy members who are celebrating Evolution Weekend recognize the critical role science education should play in our society -- and they recognize that religion plays a different, but, in their minds, no less important, role. Join these forward-looking individuals, celebrate Evolution Weekend and help create a population that better understands both religion and science.

Canadian girl 'youngest to discover supernova'

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-12110747

Kathryn Gray, 10, at home in Birdton, New Brunswick, Canada, on 3 Jan 2010, sits next to the computer monitor on which is the image in which she discovered the supernova Kathryn Gray says she is 'really excited' by her interstellar discovery

A 10-year-old girl in Canada has become the youngest person to discover a supernova - an exploding star which can briefly outshine a whole galaxy.

Kathryn Gray was studying images taken at an amateur observatory which had been sent to her father.

She spotted the magnitude 17 supernova on Sunday.

Supernovas - which are rare events - are stellar explosions that mark the violent deaths of stars several times bigger than the Sun.

The supernova was discovered in the galaxy UGC 3378, about 240 million light years away, in the constellation of Camelopardalis.

"I'm really excited. It feels really good," Ms Gray told Canada's Star newspaper.
Age estimate

Kathryn's father, Paul Gray, himself an amateur astronomer, helped her make the discovery by taking the steps to rule out asteroids and checking the list of current known supernovas.

The discovery was then verified by independent astronomers and officially registered, the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (RASC) said in a statement.

Looking for supernovas requires going through old images of star fields and comparing them to new pictures.

"Kathryn pointed to the screen and said: 'Is this one?' I said yup, that looks pretty good," Mr Gray told the newspaper.

"It's fantastic that someone so young would be passionate about astronomy. What an incredible discovery. We're all very excited," said Deborah Thompson of RASC.

The new supernova is called Supernova 2010lt.

The last supernova in our galaxy occurred several hundred years ago.

Supernovas are of interest to astronomers because they manufacture most of the chemical elements that went into making the Earth and other planets, says the RASC.

Distant supernovas can be used to estimate the size and age of our universe.

General Discussion / US Navy Captain loses post over lewd videos

Man trying to keep morale up during deployment in the war and now 3-4 years later, he lose his post.  Not sure what to make of this  ....

Jan 4, 2010: The US Navy has relieved an aircraft carrier captain of his command over the production of lewd videos on the ship.

The videos featuring Capt Owen Honors were apparently made in 2006 and 2007. One has gay slurs, women in the shower together and simulated masturbation.

BBC Report

NORFOLK

In one scene, two female Navy sailors stand in a shower stall aboard the aircraft carrier, pretending to wash each other. They joke about how they should get six minutes under the water instead of the mandated three.

In other skits, sailors parade in drag, use anti-gay slurs, and simulate masturbation and a rectal exam. Another scene implies that an officer is having sex in his stateroom with a donkey.

They're all part of a series of short movies produced aboard the Norfolk-based aircraft carrier Enterprise in 2006 and 2007 and broadcast to its nearly 6,000 sailors and Marines. The man who masterminded and starred in them is Capt. Owen Honors - now the commander of the carrier, which is weeks away from deploying.

The videos, obtained by The Virginian-Pilot this week, were shot and edited with government equipment, many of them while the Enterprise was deployed supporting the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

General Discussion / Winter Solstice Lunar Eclipse - Dec. 21
« on: December 20, 2010, 08:16:17 AM »
Once in about 400-500 year event - a total lunar eclipse that occurs on the Winter Solstice.  Everybody get naked and dance around the favorite obelisk of your choice and pay homage to the gods.

The December 21 lunar eclipse will be visible to observers in North America and western South America.

NASA Info

Early in the morning on December 21 a total lunar eclipse will be visible to sky watchers across North America (for observers in western states the eclipse actually begins late in the evening of December 20), Greenland and Iceland. Viewers in Western Europe will be able to see the beginning stages of the eclipse before moonset, and in western Asia the later stages of the eclipse will be visible after moonrise.

From beginning to end, the eclipse will last about three hours and twenty-eight minutes. For observers on the east coast of the U.S. the eclipse lasts from 1:33am EST through 5:01 a.m. EST. Viewers on the west coast will be able to tune in a bit earlier. For them the eclipse begins at 10:33 p.m. PST on December 20 and lasts until 2:01am PST on Dec. 21. Totality, the time when Earth's shadow completely covers the moon, will last a lengthy 72 minutes.

When will the Eclipse Occur?

The eclipse’s total phase lasts for 72 minutes. The penumbral eclipse ("P1") begins at 05:29:17 Universal Time (UT) and the partial eclipse ("U1") starts at 06:32:37 UT. The total eclipse ("U2") begins at 07:40:47 UT and the point of the greatest eclipse occurs at 08:16:57 UT. The moon lies near the zenith for observers in southern California and Baja Mexico at the instant of the greatest eclipse. The umbral magnitude peaks at 1.2561 as the moon’s southern limb passes 2.8 arc minutes north of the shadow’s central axis. Therefore, the moon’s southern half will seem much darker than the northern half because it lies deeper in the umbra.

Since the moon samples a large range of umbral depths during totality, its appearance will change dramatically with time. The total eclipse ("U3") ends at 08:53:08 UT, followed by the end of the partial eclipse ("U4") at 10:01:20 UT. The penumbral eclipse ("P4") ends at 11:04:31 UT.

A first grade girl handed in the drawing below for her homework assignment.

The teacher graded it and the child brought it home.

She returned to school the next day with the following note:

Dear Ms. Davis,

I want to be perfectly clear on my child's homework illustration. This picture is NOT of me on a dance pole on a stage in a strip joint surrounded by male customers with money.

I work at Home Depot and had commented to my daughter how much money we made in the recent snowstorm.

This drawing is of me selling a shovel.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Harrington

Life and death in the Caribbean

Posted by James Alan Fox, Crime and Punishment October 26, 2010 10:00 AM

I just returned from Trinidad and Tobago, and survived to tell about my academic expedition to the tiny nation that has the unflattering distinction of ranking fifth worldwide in homicide. Also home safe are the three dozen doctoral students and the few faculty colleagues who traveled with me. Still, one female student did endure a rather scary episode on our last day away, when an aggressive stranger cornered her in a locked room. But this close encounter of the frightening kind occurred in our upscale hotel, not in some crime-ridden section of this Caribbean republic.

I write about my journey not to turn this crime blog into a travel log, but to carry further my last column concerning deterrence —specifically, the question of whether the death penalty makes would-be killers think twice, assuming, of course, that they even think once. When it comes to thinking, however, it is wishful thinking for Trinis to expect that a proposed resumption of hanging will bring peace to their troubled country.

"Were we to reinstitute hangings," acting Prime Minister Jack Warner aid last summer, "it will have a dent on crime. I am convinced.” Despite the strength of his conviction, this widely-held perspective ignores both scientific research and basic logic concerning how drug dealers, gang-bangers and other predators balance risks and rewards.

At this juncture, the vast majority of homicides in Trinidad and Tobago are gang-related. One high ranking police administrator claimed that as many as 85% of homicides involved gang conflict, although estimate may be a bit overstated. Whatever the actual share, gang violence remains a major social problem in this part of the world.

Accompanied by a small group of students, I spent time at ground zero of the gang war-zone in the impoverished ward of Laventille, where rivals regularly battle over turf and drugs. Gang leaders (who asked to remain nameless) told us about crimes they committed and hits that they ordered. A veteran of the gang wars showed off his many bullet wounds that testified to his violent lifestyle. At age 34, he had exceeded street life expectancy. Others like him often don’t reach their 30s, unless they are among the lucky few who manage to escape the neighborhood or the less fortunate many who change residence to some prison address.

When I asked Trini politicians for a reason why the death penalty should be resuscitated, I was told that “criminals fear death.” The young and no-so-young gang members we met are indeed careful not to venture just a few blocks away into a rival gang’s territory, especially after dark. They may fear death, or at least attempt to avoid it, but it is not the threat of state-sponsored hanging that governs their day-to-day decision-making.

Deterrence is based not so much on the severity of punishment, but on the perceived likelihood that it will be administered. The street-level death penalty is real and immediate. It is of far more concern to gang members than whatever the criminal justice system might do if ever captured, convicted and sentenced to death. Those living on the violent streets of Laventille face the threat of death everyday in their neighborhood; the justice system and the ritual of hanging are the least of their worries.

Last May’s general election brought a change of leadership in Trinidad and Tobago. Undoubtedly, ruling party leaders are anxious, if not desperate, to find a solution to the.soaring murder toll that surpassed 500 last year and is on a similar track thus far this year. This disturbing trend jeopardizes only the safety and well-being of he citizens of Trinidad and Tobago, but its fragile reputation as a welcoming destination for business and tourism.

The new government may actually get lucky—being in the right place at the right time—should the recent surge in murders subside (as most crime spikes naturally do) while the hangings are resumed. Although I pray for their sake that homicides actually do decline in number, my fear is that we would then hear a loud but misguided chorus of “I told you so’s.”

Entertainment & Culture Discussion / QUEEN OF SOCA

I posted this to help spread the word about an independent movie production

Kevin Adams left Trinidad at the tender age of 14 to live abroad in New York. In 2001 he attended Brooklyn College where he pursued a degree in film production with a concentration in screenwriting. Upon graduating, he returned to Trinidad for Carnival for the first time in 2006. After witnessing Carnival, this was his inspiration behind writing the movie, "Queen of Soca." Spending time in Morvant Trinidad and growig up in La Canoa he was able to connect to the pass and how life can be difficult for the average youth. In order to help the youths of impoverished communites they sometimes need inspiration, and that's what "Queen of Soca" is about, a rags to riches story. The impact will teach most people that no matter what, you should never give up as we don't know what tomorrow will bring. This is a very ambitious project on a very low budget. Our main goal is to develop the local film industry by creating jobs, and enhancing the existing skill set of local technical professionals. We also aim to engage and harness the business sector of T&T by bringing Caribbean stories to the forefront. We strongly believe that if we don’t begin to create the necessary film & TV productions based on our own culture, it is hardly likely that we will be able to influence the world with our arts and culture. Our film incorporates two initiatives, youth and education as well as arts and culture and is currently employing/training youths as interns and production assistants in the departments of sound, lighting, directing, cinematography, art direction and script development through the Trinidad & Tobago Film Company who are the main funders of our film. We are in need of $14,000 USD for production and post production. In production, equipment rental such as lights, the red camera, sound, grip equipment, paying a crew of 20 people for 30 days, catering, and transportation. In post-production, we need an editing facilty with an editor along with a 1000gig external hard drive. If you own a business and can't provide cash but can assist with catering, transportation, airfare, hotel, equipment or other, we will be happy to accomodate that. You can also email a check: TriniGoodfellas Video Production c/o Glenford K. Adams US address: 1317 Prospect Place Brooklyn NY 11213 Trinidad Address: 89 Louise Horne Phrase 4-2 Malabar Arima Trinidad West Indies If you cannot give cash donation but you can contribute as a PA or providing catering or craft (snacks) or transportation for crew and cast, we would like to hear from you. queenofsocamovie@gmail.com. Last but not least, we would ask of everyone to please spread the word about our Movie, it is just as valuable as a donation. Thank you

General Discussion / Randy Quaid seeks refugee status in Canada
« on: October 25, 2010, 08:12:17 AM »
LOL

I am waiting for the day when some of the SW forumites apply for refugee status in Canada

U.S. actor Randy Quaid and his wife Evi are seeking refugee status in Canada, telling an Immigration and Refugee Board hearing in Vancouver that they fear for their lives in the U.S.

The Quaids told the hearing Friday that eight of their close friends had been killed in recent years and they now felt endangered themselves.

Evi Quaid said friends such as actors David Carradine and Heath Ledger were "murdered" under mysterious circumstances and she's worried something will happen to her husband.

"We feel our lives are in danger," she said.

"Randy has known eight close friends murdered in odd, strange manners ... We feel that we're next."

Ledger was nominated for an Oscar for his lead role in the movie Brokeback Mountain. He died in January 2008 from an accidental overdose.

(CBC) Carradine was star of the hit 1970s television series Kung Fu and also had a movie career before he hanged himself in Thailand last year. He was 72.

The Quaids were released late Friday after posting bonds of $10,000 each.

The couple were arrested Thursday after Vancouver police were called for assistance concerning an incident near West 41st Avenue and Yew Street.

"While checking the identity of a man and a woman at that location, they learned that the two were wanted on outstanding warrants from the United States," said police in a statement issued on Friday morning.

"The pair were held for CBSA in the Vancouver jail, and they were turned over to [the] Canada Border Services Agency this morning at 10:30. As there are no Canadian charges or offences committed, the names of the two individuals cannot be released."
Wanted on $500,000 warrants

The Quaids are facing felony burglary charges and misdemeanour counts in the U.S. for allegedly moving back into and vandalizing a home they once owned in Santa Barbara, Calif. Both are wanted on $500,000 bench warrants issued by judge Donna Geck in Santa Barbara.

Randy Quaid won a Golden Globe Award and was nominated for an Emmy for his portrayal of U.S. President Lyndon Johnson in LBJ: The Early Years, but he's perhaps best known for his roles in the National Lampoon's Vacation movies as well as Brokeback Mountain and Independence Day.

He is the older brother of actor Dennis Quaid.

General Discussion / US student jumps to death after gay webcam footage
« on: October 01, 2010, 11:38:45 AM »

New York Times

Private Moment Made Public, Then a Fatal Jump

It started with a Twitter  message on Sept. 19: “Roommate asked for the room till midnight. I went into molly’s room and turned on my webcam. I saw him making out with a dude. Yay.”
Mr. Clementi, a Rutgers University freshman, is thought to have jumped off the George Washington Bridge.

That night, the authorities say, the Rutgers University student who sent the message used a camera in his dormitory room to stream the roommate’s intimate encounter live on the Internet.

And three days later, the roommate who had been surreptitiously broadcast — Tyler Clementi, an 18-year-old freshman and an accomplished violinist — jumped from the George Washington Bridge into the Hudson River in an apparent suicide.

The Sept. 22 death, details of which the authorities disclosed on Wednesday, was the latest by a young American that followed the online posting of hurtful material. The news came on the same day that Rutgers kicked off a two-year, campuswide project to teach the importance of civility, with special attention to the use and abuse of new technology.
...

The Middlesex County prosecutor’s office said Mr. Clementi’s roommate, Dharun Ravi, 18, of Plainsboro, N.J., and another classmate, Molly Wei, 18, of Princeton Junction, N.J., had each been charged with two counts of invasion of privacy for using “the camera to view and transmit a live image” of Mr. Clementi. The most serious charges carry a maximum sentence of five years.

Mr. Ravi was charged with two additional counts of invasion of privacy for trying a similar live feed on the Internet on Sept. 21, the day before the suicide. A spokesman for the prosecutor’s office, James O’Neill, said the investigation was continuing, but he declined to “speculate on additional charges.”

Steven Goldstein, chairman of the gay rights group Garden State Equality, said Wednesday that he considered the death a hate crime. “We are sickened that anyone in our society, such as the students allegedly responsible for making the surreptitious video, might consider destroying others’ lives as a sport,” he said in a statement.

Understanding Engineers #1

Two engineering students were biking across a university campus
when one said, "Where did you get such a great bike?" The second engineer
replied, "Well, I was walking along yesterday, minding my own business,
when a beautiful woman rode up on this bike, threw it to the ground, took off
all her clothes and said, "Take what you want." The first engineer nodded
approvingly and said, "Good choice: The clothes probably wouldn't have
fit you anyway."

A priest, a doctor, and an engineer were waiting one morning for a
particularly slow group of golfers. The engineer fumed, "What's with
those guys? We must have been waiting for fifteen minutes!" The doctor chimed
in,"I don't know, but I've never seen such inept golf!" The priest said,
"Here comes the green-keeper. Let's have a word with him." He said, "Hello,
George. What's wrong with that group ahead of us? They're rather slow,
aren't they?" The green-keeper replied, "Oh, yes. That's a group of
blind firemen. They lost their sight saving our clubhouse from a fire last
year, so we always let them play for free anytime." The group fell silent for
a moment. The priest said, "That's so sad. I think I will say a special
prayer for them tonight." The doctor said, "Good idea. I'm going to contact my
ophthalmologist colleague and see if there's anything she can do for them."
The engineer said, "Why can't they play at night?"
