More digression ...

Light bulbs like relationships: some blow early, some dim with time and some last a long time.

I must be buying the wrong brand.  I have a basketful of blown bulbs. I used to put a date on them but lost track after they began to blow.

Just as I was about to sign for the Note 2, I noticed that the price of the Note 3 had dropped. So I ended up getting the Note 3 instead of the 2.

Extremely happy with the device.  :beermug:

Lucky. That's a beast phone.

I rationalized the purchase as I am able to use the notes feature for work related meetings ... the ability to make notes, annotate photos and save it as a PDF is/will my life easier when I am on a shop floor making notes and sketches. I still have to get better with the handwriting to text mode though. A little to slow but I expect the speed to pick up as I get used to the device. And the camera and HD resolution is great. And finally, I like to bigger phone size too.

Just got the Nexus 5 on Nov 11th. hmmmm.  DHW, what is the strategy for Motorola? wont this cannibalize its other products?

It's made for the developing market. Third world countries. In America it won't really dent anything it's going to be sold as a prepaid phone. Motorola international presence is pretty low so this should help, I cah even remember when last I see a Motorola phone selling in Trinidad lol. And remember Google owns Motorola mobile devison, so its a great ploy to get more people on Android. I need a new phone but I might hold out for this. $179 is too good to pass up.

Nexus 5 is a better phone, so don't worry too much.

Off topic. Trinidad going to get LTE 4g. Digicel already start upgrading.

thanks ...

was trying to acquire a Note 2 but I waited too long. Could have got it for "free' with my carrier (2 year contract) but will I was hemming and hawing about a Note 3, they sold out. So have not done anything as yet.  the Nexus 5 was for my daughter. So as usual, the children have better technology than me.

found a Note 2. Should be here by Monday I hope ...

« on: November 01, 2013, 03:38:58 PM »
Ford is a idiot but the Toronto Star is a bigger idiot.

The Star is a useless rag.

We have a ex Premier who blew a billion dollars on gas plants but seems to be getting away scott free. How come the Star not camping outside McGuinty's home?

I would rather have a fat, uncouth, sweaty, crack smoking mayor who doh waste tax dollars than a left wing lying premier who lied about spending a billion dollars, or a stylish Prime Minster wannabe who does smoke weed or conservative senators who padding their expense accounts with tax payer money.

steups

Ford should recuse himself until this gets sorted out. And if he want, run again for Mayor in 2014.

Cleveland Kidnapper Ariel Castro Dead

Convicted 52-year-old found hanging in his cell; a review of the incident is under way
By Per Liljas Sept. 04, 2013

Notorious kidnapper Ariel Castro was found hanging in his cell at the Correctional Reception Center in Orient, Ohio, on Tuesday.

He had been sentenced to life plus 1,000 years for keeping Amanda Berry, Michelle Knight and Gina DeJesus locked up inside his basement in Cleveland for over a decade while sexually assaulting them.

I cant really comment on what constitute IP and copyright laws. But based on observations from outside the industry, I see a lot of borrowing going on as well as many similarities between songs.

For example, just today, I was listening to www.rdio.com (if you have not checked out this site, you should. Lots of free streaming music that can be tailored to the user based on listening history).

I selected the "Parliament/George" Clinton station and set it to play the artist and similar type music from this genre.

Other artists that was included in this stream included Cameo, Zapp, Maze, Ohio Players,  Bootsy Rubber Band etc. that was automatically selected by the underlying algorithm

Guess what? the tracks that played all had similar themes and beats. This begs the questions: who borrowed from whom?  Which artist was the primary originator of that theme of music?. One review of Cameo commented on how their music sounded like Parliament. I don't know, but did George Clinton sue Layry Blackman for sounding like Parliament?

If the Gaye and Bridgeport are successful in their suit, to me that should open the door to flurry of lawsuits for other copyright holders whose music have been sampled by other musicians.

The fact that DJ's in nightclubs all over the world can "mix" songs seamlessly suggests that many songs have more in common than not.

I can hear the similarity between the background beat in the Blurred Lines and Got to Give it Up but less so with Sexy Ways. But the songs to my untrained ears seem significantly different enough.

Is it copying or just employing similar styles?

More likely in my view is that Blurred Lines will make a lot of money and the Gaye estate want a piece of the action.

They should listen to some soca that is sound the same from one song to another

Stop Me If You’ve Heard This One

By Melissa Locker @woolyknickers Aug. 21, 2013

Recently, two pop hits—Robin Thicke, T.I. and Pharrell’s “Blurred Lines” and One Direction’s “Best Song Ever”—made headlines for taking inspiration from classic songs.

Irate One Direction fans started a frenzy on Twitter due to rumors that The Who was going to ask YouTube to take down One Direction’s “Best Song Ever” on the grounds that the track bore an uncanny resemblance to The Who’s classic “Baba O’Riley.” The Twitter tempest surrounding the hashtag #donttouchbestsongever eventually led The Who’s frontman Pete Townsend to issue a statement this week assuring Directioners’ that he had no intention of pursuing action against “Best Song Ever.” In fact, he said, he liked the song and, perhaps less believably, One Direction. In the statement, Townsend admitted that he was flattered by the similarity, noting, “I’m happy to think they may have been influenced a little bit by the Who.”

While Townsend was honored by the similarity, not everyone takes it as a compliment. Robin Thicke, Pharrell and T.I. have filed a preemptive lawsuit over their mega-hit track “Blurred Lines” after Marvin Gaye’s estate and Bridgeport music—who own the rights to a number of Funkadelic compositions—reportedly threatened a lawsuit against Thicke et al, on the grounds that “Blurred Lines” was too similar to their copyrighted material, specifically Gaye’s “Got to Give It Up” and Funkadelic’s “Sexy Ways.” (While George Clinton of Funkadelic has come out in support of Robin Thicke, Bridgeport Music has not.) The “Blurred Lines” lawsuit states: “There are no similarities between plaintiffs’ composition and those the claimants allege they own, other than commonplace musical elements. Plaintiffs created a hit and did it without copying anyone else’s composition.”

While it’s unusual for two high-profiled claims of musical plagiarism to make headlines in the same week, music has a long history of songs that sound alike.  In light of that, it seemed like a good time to revisit the concept of pop plagiarism that we covered last year.

General Discussion / Drive-In Sex Garage

I wonder if this will work in T&T?

Source

By Nick Squires, Rome

2:59PM BST 26 Aug 2013

The nine “sex boxes”, in a walled, park-like area on the outskirts of Zurich, enable clients to have sex in their cars with prostitutes.

The sex workers will line up on a road leading to the drive-in car ports, where they will be able to negotiate fees with their customers.

Proponents of the scheme argue that it will improve hygiene and safety for prostitutes, saving them from walking the streets or being driven to surrounding forests or wasteland for sexual encounters.

Many of the women are Roma gypsies from central and eastern Europe, and have only a rudimentary grasp of German, increasing their vulnerability.

But others have condemned the initiative as encouraging the sex trade, saying that it is wrong that £1.4 million of tax payers’ money was used to build the facility, located in an old industrial zone to the west of Zurich city centre.

It will cost an additional £490,000 to maintain the site each year.

The sex box idea was approved in a popular referendum last year, with nearly 53 per cent voting in favour, but it remains opposed by the populist Swiss People’s Party (SVP).

“It will not work, either because the clients will not come or because the site will not be used by prostitutes,” Sven Oliver Dogwiler, a local SVP politician, told AFP.

“It puts them in a cleaner space but one that is subsidised by taxes.” But the city council says that having sex workers ply their trade outside the city is better than having them causing disturbances and attracting rowdy, sometimes drunken clients in the Sihlquai district in the centre, as happened before.

“Prostitution is a business basically. We cannot prohibit it, so we want to control it in favour of the sex workers and the population,” said Michael Herzig, director of social services in the city. “If we do not control it, organised crime is taking over, and the pimps are taking over.”

Clients must be over 18 and pedestrians and men on motorcycles are not allowed, because the sex must take place in a car.

The council agreed not to install video surveillance cameras, because it was thought they would dissuade many customers from using the site.

The sex boxes will be open from 7pm to 5am every day.

While prostitution is legal in Switzerland, sex workers have to pay a tax of five Swiss francs (£3.50) each night that they work.

Star Child, you said you don't contribute much, same here, I thank the mods for what they do and for the record this pales in comparison to the net positive from the site. When I saw the ban on Thur I did not have time to respond and was not going to, but I saw Flex's question at the top and so answered.

That said, we hold our players, admin and beloved TTFA to a level of transparency, consistency, and accountability -- Yes, I don't pay for use of the site but a question was asked to which I responded -- why would the very site that demands the above from the former be different?

Yes, rules are made to be followed, in a society, organization and this site is no different so all culpable posters deserved to be banned if they don't follow the rules, I did not disagree, where I took contention was the seeming lack of consistency, I know not Bakes from any walk of life, in fact there are precisely 2 people I really know on this site prior to its inception, so my issue with him is the seeming similar level of culpability. That said, I am told he has toned down, i'll give the benefit of the doubt, I don't read the site enough to really detect that difference...

How about the site is privately owned and funded?!  None of us are in a position to demand anything.  I understand some people not liking certain things but unless you have made it known before and it was ignored you can't just come now and start with accusations of favoritism and hypocrisy as some have done.  I personally know bakes over a decade now and I can say that I see a change in how he handles things on here.  When it start I can't say but is that really relevant?  Funny how this whole thing looks because it seems as if change was not necessary.  If someone change for the better then why so many dwelling in the past?  Is it that we feel JC wasn't going completely overboard and needed to be dealt with?  If 10 cars speeding down the highway and only one get's pulled over is the police biased or simply elected to deal with the one that caught his eye?  As a bystander would you say it's unfair that one got caught and the others got away?  Why or why not?

Flex if I were you I wouldn't change how you guys go about appointing mods at all because if people indifferent or like the choice they would not say a single word about transparency and fairness, they would simply roll with it and be cool.

I starting to feel the same way.

Because at the end of the day, I have to get people who will work with and for the SWO benefit to help ease some of the work load.

Thanx for your input.

Aye Flex and Bakes, I only weighed in once to point out a couple a points that I felt characterized Bakes past on-line personality. He called my points "nitpicking" but what I wanted to point out that those two "nitpicking" points were central to the thesis regarding his past online personality as described by a few posters in this thread.

However, my take on Bake's online personality does not give me any right to demand anything of you (as noted by Scorpion) other than to report posts that violate the rules of the forum.

And if forum rules are constantly violated or ignored, I have the right to leave if I don't like it.

Nobody forcing me to stay on the site.

So Flex, hats off to you and the team for operating this site which is likely demanding at the best of times. Soliciting feedback is a healthy way to get input to make the forum successful. But people have to realize that there is a fine line between demanding change vs constructive feedback.

So here is to many more years of an entertaining forum  :beermug: :beermug:
