Tiresais, I am not going to go back and forth with this topic.

Let them be who they are.

Just do not expect me to support this nonesense.

It would be interesting to see all the people who supports this that it comes in their lives in some form. Then you would sing a different song.

The LORD [is] longsuffering, and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing [the guilty], visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth [generation] - Numbers 14:18 (Generational Curses).

You'll quote the anti-gay text, but when it prices slaves to be sold you're all silent - you're a hypocrite. Tell me what's the conversion rate on a shekle these days Pastor? How much does the bible think I should demand for my slaves?

well is 50 shekels for a rape victim. I would think a slave is worth at least twice that.

92
So let me ask the forum. If any of your children turn out to be "GAY", what allyuh go do?

probably stone dem ... I think that is allowed somewhere in the Bible.

93

Since people quoting the Bible, I will follow suit on quoting the bible, but for marriage, not homosexuality ...

I am all for Traditional Marriage as defined in the bible. After all, if it in the Bible, it must be true .. unless of course you decided to conveniently use Mosaic Law to explain away the inconvenient aspects of the bible you chose to ignore.

Steups ...

Yes, I got side-tracked on the anti-oxidant topic.  Two reasons

1) Early in this thread, you posted that "there really only two causes to disease, Free Radicals and Inflammation., and free radical suggests anti-oxidants

2) The link from Tireais to the American Cancer Society said that "Mangosteeen ... is touted for its antioxidants, especially xanthones, a type of chemical in certain plantsweas.

Yeah, so I focused on anti-oxidants.

With regards to the Mayo Clinic and the Anti-inflammatory properties of Mangosteen.  here are some quotes from the MD who wrote the article that you quote, specifically

"It's an exciting hypothesis because there's some plausible data to suggest that it might work" ... "Until we do the study, though, it's just that - a hypothesis." See the highlighted box in the image below.

The study has not been completed but Mangosteen is on the list of Research Projects

Mangosteen: Anti-inflammatory effects and Atrial Fibrilation.
    Status: Open Fall 2008

So Mangosteen is on the list of all those other "super foods' that can cure a variety of ailments.

I am biased .. I would rather wait until an FDA approved xanthone extract is available than spend a lot of money on a product, that might be beneficial, at an inflated price (I am assuming the price is inflated as with most MLM distribution networks)

Preacher and Tireais

thanks for the various links.

I found the link to the American Cancer Society (provided by Tireais) to be insightful.

"This product [Mangosteen Juice] is sold as a dietary supplement in the United States. Unlike drugs (which must be tested before being allowed to be sold), the companies that make supplements are not required to prove to the Food and Drug Administration that their supplements are safe or effective, as long as they don't claim the supplements can prevent, treat, or cure any specific disease"

So like any other dietary supplements, the consumer has to satisfy him/herself that the product is beneficial. Some people have higher standards i,e. published results of repeatable clinical trials; others are happy with anecdotal or indirect evidence. Take your pick and proceed accordingly.

On a personal level, I take supplements that contain Omega-3 fatty acids - do they help? I really don't know but anecdotally, the knee joint pains have subsided.  On the other hand, I also backed off on the intensity level when I run.

The main issue I have with products distributed through MLM approaches is that the retail price of the product, in most cases, bloated.  So while the mangosteen juice may be rich with anti-oxidants, there are many other foods that can contribute to a diet rich in anti-oxidants - maybe at a lower cost.

General Discussion / 10,000 Diamonds - Woman arriving from T&T

Woman arrested in Toronto with 10,000 diamonds within her body

A woman has been arrested at Toronto’s Pearson airport after arriving from Trinidad & Tobago with more than 10,000 diamonds concealed within her body, the RCMP said Thursday. Sergeant Richard Rollings declined to elaborate on how she was carrying them inside her or confirm whether she had ingested them. “It is a massive quantity,” he said. Police are still investigating the source of the 1,545-carats-worth of gemstones and whether they are “conflict diamonds” sold illicitly to fund wars in Africa. A total of 10,202 diamonds were recovered. Police say they are worth about $400,000. Helena Freida Bodner, 66, was to appear in court in Brampton, Ont., Friday. She has been in custody since her arrest on Feb. 3.

Jokes / Why did the chicken cross the road? Some celebrated answers
« on: February 04, 2014, 05:41:46 AM »

ROB FORD:  That video of me snorting that chicken does not exist and I’ve only crossed that road in a drunken stupor.

SARAH PALIN: The chicken crossed the road because, gosh-darn it, he's a maverick!

BARACK OBAMA: Let me be clear, the chicken crossed the road because it was time for change! The chicken wanted change! Real change! Change he could believe in!

HILLARY CLINTON: When I was Secretary of State, I travelled that road thousands of times and I personally helped that little chicken to cross the road each time. This experience makes me uniquely qualified to ensure, right from Day One, that every chicken in this country gets the chance it deserves to cross the road. But then, this really isn't about me.

GEORGE W. BUSH: We don't really care why the chicken crossed the road. We just want to know if the chicken is on our side of the road or not. The chicken is either with us or against us. There is no middle ground here.

DICK CHENEY: Where's my gun?

COLIN POWELL: Now to the left of the screen, you can clearly see the satellite image of the chicken crossing the road.

BILL CLINTON: I did not cross the road with that chicken.

STEPHEN HARPER:  Let me be perfectly clear.  I did not know about the chicken, I did not know about the road.  If I would have been made aware of them I would certainly have taken appropriate action and prevented the chicken from crossing the road.  The culprits responsible for the chicken crossing the road are being investigated by the RCMP.

THOMAS MULCAIR:  If the Prime Minister didn’t know about the chicken and he didn’t know about the road, how did he know that the chicken had any intention of crossing the road?

JUSTIN TRUDEAU:  The chicken crossed the road because the other side had legalized marijuana
AL GORE: I invented the chicken.

AL SHARPTON: Why are all the chickens white? We need some black chickens.

DR. PHIL: The problem we have here is that this chicken won't realize that he must first deal with the problem on this side of the road before it goes after the problem on the other side of the road. What we need to do is help him realize how stupid he's acting by not taking on his current problems before adding new problems.

OPRAH: Well, I understand that the chicken is having problems, which is why he wants to cross this road so bad. So instead of having the chicken learn from his mistakes and take falls, which is a part of life, I'm going to give this chicken a NEW CAR so that he can just drive across the road and not live his life like the rest of the chickens.

ANDERSON COOPER, CNN: We have reason to believe there is a chicken, but we have not yet been allowed to have access to the other side of the road.

NANCY GRACE: That chicken crossed the road because he's guilty! You can see it in his eyes and the way he walks.

MARTHA STEWART: No one called me to warn me which way that chicken was going. I had a standing order at the Farmer's Market to sell my eggs when the price dropped to a certain level. No little bird gave me any insider information.

DR SEUSS: Did the chicken cross the road? Did he cross it with a toad? Yes, the chicken crossed the road, but why it crossed I've not been told.

ERNEST HEMINGWAY: To die in the rain, alone.

JERRY FALWELL: Because the chicken was gay! Can't you people see the plain truth? That's why they call it the 'other side.' Yes, my friends, That chicken is gay. And if you eat that chicken, you will become gay too. I say we boycott all chickens until we sort out this abomination that the Liberal media whitewashes with seemingly harmless phrases like 'the other side.' That chicken should not be crossing the road. It's as plain and as simple as that.

GRANDPA: In my day we didn't ask why the chicken crossed the road. Somebody told us the chicken crossed the road, and that was good enough.

BARBARA WALTERS: Isn't that interesting? In a few moments, we will be listening to the chicken tell, for the first time, the heart warming story of how it experienced a serious case of molting, and went on to accomplish it's lifelong dream of crossing the road.

ARISTOTLE: It is the nature of chickens to cross the road.

JOHN LENNON: Imagine all the chickens in the world crossing roads together, in peace.

BILL GATES: I have just released eChicken2013, which will not only cross roads, but will lay eggs, file your important documents, and balance your checkbook. Internet Explorer is an integral part of eChicken2013. This new platform is much more stable and will never reboot.

ALBERT EINSTEIN: Did the chicken really cross the road, or did the road move beneath the chicken?

COLONEL SANDERS: Did I miss one?

General Discussion / Re: Should T&T legalized marijuana?
« on: January 28, 2014, 06:47:46 AM »

It has nothing to do with higher or lower intellect, simple common sense would suffice.  How should I respond to you, since you didn't take the time to read the discussion in the thread, or you read it and misunderstood my comment... on the basis of that misunderstanding you decide to take an unsolicited "pot shot" at me... I point out to you that you are mischaracterizing my comment, I clarify for you that comment... and STILL you come back with the erroneous charge that I told this fella that HE is detached from reality?  And I am not supposed to respond in an offended way I suppose?

I re-read the post and I see that you did state that his "position was detached from reality". I now realize that I was quoting him and not you. In truth, I had nothing of substance to add to the original debate - that is why I did not engage in the marijuana debate per se.  I jumped in prematurely when I read Tireais comment about being you being impolite. Maybe my past disagreements with you have coloured my opinions.

But on a lighter side, your last reply was non-offensive even though I was clearly wrong with the reality comment.

General Discussion / Re: Should T&T legalized marijuana?
« on: January 27, 2014, 03:25:28 PM »

Let's dissect the comment on being "detached from reality". While it may be accurate within the context of available facts, and you yourself have no intention on being impolite and bullying, I would argue that many people, if told directly that they are "detached from reality", would view that as an insult or if not an insult, then a "put down" or condescending jibe. You ask, "How else do you describe an opinion that is not supported by facts?" How about" "Tireais, you are misreading the facts, here is what I mean".

It all comes down to how you deliver the phrase.  I suppose it is a "touchy feely" aspect that I have become aware of in dealing with HR issues in the workplace as well as attempting to resolve conflict between family or friends.  Truly, many of us should have no emotional capital tied up in the Forum; for the most part, it is a faceless and anonymous environment. So why bother to apply social conventions that hold more weight in face-to-face interaction?. The problem with this is that most people read more into email, text msg or social media comments than they actually need to. I suppose it comes down to a matter of style. I am not likely to use the phrase "you are detached from reality" unless I wanted to deliver a barb or I was using it in a humorous fashion.

Even your statement that I suffer from "the same malaise that affected Tireasis" can be construed as a personal attack. That may be the reality in the true sense of the words when dissected, but my  perception (wrong or right) is a reality. I have come to realize that that is your style. But even a statement of fact can be misconstrued as an insult. I suppose that asking posters to be sensitive to delivery style is unrealistic on my part - I have often been accused of being naive.

Seriously Bakes, I have concluded that you operate on a higher intellectual level than most on the forum. And the very nature of your intellect leaves no room for the more sensitive on the forum.

Tirerais, from a Bakesian worldview, this exchange is the epitome of politeness. Be happy that he was not polite.    ;)

Just Cool said something about you some months back and I'm starting to realize it's true... actually is a while now I realize it's true.  For a grown ass man, with damn near adult, if not adult children, you love to engage in little gyul behavior.  You forever throwing basket like ah little instigating-ass bitch.  Is like you take over wherer West Coast leave off.  Doh bother responding.

Sorry to disappoint, I am responding

Your point is taken. I should not engage in posting these snipes or taking pot shots at you in this manner.  I realize that I am like a moth drawn to a flame. I find it difficult to resist making tongue-in-cheek, acerbic or sarcastic comments to certain posters. I realize I tend to do this most often with you, JC and TT (when the latter two were active posters – incidentally, you and JC replies are quite similar; TT responded differently).  Rather, I should engage directly or learn to ignore posts in which I am not an active participant.

In the future, I will refrain from these snipes or what you call “little gyul behaviour” which by the way, is no different than what you just posted.

But let me be clear in my opinion and not hide behind “little gyul behaviour”. I find that the persona you adopt on  this forum to be abrasive. Tireais was very generous when he described your response as “impolite” or “bad manners”. I would describe it as “bullying”.  I have challenged you on this before and you have countered with comments such as  “Take that as ah insult if yuh want to... take it as a "personal insult" if it make yuh happy.”

What I find peculiar is that you have no need to adopt this persona. Your arguments are almost always spot on, articulate, thoughtful and logical. Yet you feel the need to throw in disparaging or belittling comments to underscore your point. Maybe in your profession, this is a useful characteristic. But on this forum? I don’t get it.

But that is my opinion and no one is forcing me to read your comments.

Look it's cool to have a conversation with you, but if you ain't got no manners then it can't go anywhere - if I'm wrong then I'm wrong, you don't have to accuse me of being detached from reality. If you seriously can't understand that it's common manners not to insult a guy in a conversation then you have the problem, not me.

Ford’s Patois ‘normal’: linguist

A Kingston, Jamaica-based linguistics professor has affirmed that Mayor Rob Ford indeed appeared to show a good passing knowledge of Jamaican Creole in his inebriated Monday night rant, but that his speech was not necessarily vulgar.

“His language, in that context in Jamaica, would not be out of place,” wrote Hubert Devonish, a professor of linguistics at the University of the West Indies’ Jamaican language unit, writing in an email to the National Post.

Although Mr. Ford’s speech is indeed laced with Jamaican expletives, the professor noted that the mayor was speaking to fellow men at a late night venue, in this case the Etobicoke restaurant Steak Queen.

“In fact, in a male dominated domain such as that, in casual conversation amongst friends, such language is normal and would not be considered obscene,” wrote Mr. Devonish.

The professor is one of very few researchers to have published a scholarly paper in Jamaican Creole, and has been a strong advocate for having the Caribbean dialect recognized as an official language.

In the one-minute smartphone video of Mr. Ford’s rant, Mr. Devonish identified four separate expressions that were “identifiably Jamaican.”

The first — and most repeated expression — is the expletive “bomba klaat.” As the linguist explained, the word is a combination of “bomba” (vulva) and “klaat” (cloth), which combine to form an obscene term for menstrual cloth.

The second is when Mr. Ford is expressing frustration that Police Chief Bill Blair failed to meet his budget-cutting targets. The mayor says “nuo moni, no moni, cha!” It means, obviously enough, “no money, no money, + expression of annoyance,” wrote Mr. Devonish.

The third is the most complex. Mr. Ford says “yu nuo wa di raas klaat,” which translates roughly to “you know what, a--wipe?” Said Mr. Devonish, “raas” means “buttocks, and together with “klaat” is an expletive meaning “cloth used to wipe the buttocks.”

Mr. Devonish also heard “so it go,” which he translated as “that’s the way things are/ that’s the way it is.”

Altogether, although some of the words seem quite rude, Mr. Devonish said they are typical among friends, and that he could often hear similar language from colleagues on the University of the West Indies campus.

“Obviously, in other contexts, at meetings, in classrooms, in banks and public places, particularly where children might be within earshot, such language would be deemed extremely inappropriate and vulgar,” he wrote.

It is not known where Mr. Ford learned the expressions, and Monday night’s secretly captured exchange was certainly the first time his usage of Patois has been exhibited in public.

As the mayor explained on Tuesday, “it’s how I speak with some of my friends.”

...

It is  no secret that under the trusting directorship of Flex and Tallman, the site has grown and transformed into one of the most eclectic TNT social media forums.  Without public input, decisions were made and changes occurred which once all got use to have proved to be very successful.

So As egalitarian as the gesture maybe In my my humble opinion the ownership should be have the say in deciding who are most apt to be moderators. We the fans are not shareholders but are recipients of the hard work and vision of these men.  How many CEO's  defer the final decisions to fans?
I applause the gesture by Flex. Once more it shows his openness and willingness to make things work and to please the general public however given the track record  by both Flex and Tallman, I would leave. The decision in their hands and trust their choices.

Ah but if the vote was simply an exercise in egalitarian/pluralistic decision making your point would be made, but voting is typically perceived as a question of legitimacy - if the forum votes for the moderator they internalise some of the blame for that decision and thus if they turn out to be a vote-banning sociopath then they can look to themselves :p

@ AB and Tireais: Ah have to agree with AB here. This site belong to Flex and dem. I presume the funding coming from their own pockets? The site is Ad free.  While they may solicit opinions from the forum, is up to them to run the site as they see fit.

@ Dutty: would you rather I change my Manicou to a "piece ah pork"?  But if all it takes is for me to get ban from the site to make you moderator, I go delete my account.

@ Coops: i suspect even if members were well behaved, it does still take time to administer this site. Ah wonder how many hrs/week Flex andTallman is spend on this site?
