Clearly you are not well informed about the game so I am replying this last time and then no more. I like a good debate as much as the next guy, but you must show that you know what you're talking about.

Collins was selected for the Sri Lanka series, but had to withdraw because of the contract issue. What is the point in picking Smith as a fielder when he makes no runs. We don't pick fielders, we pick batsmen or bowlers and they are expected to field. If in your opinion he is a better bowler than Powell or Benn so be it, you're entitled to think that. Where is the statistical evidence (at the very least) to back up this claim?

Ganga is a proven failure at the international level... PERIOD! Again, why compare down to someone else who is not up to the level of the game? Nash and Findlay have just started. Nash in 2 test matches in New Zealand scored 162 runs at an average of 74 with 2 50s. Add 55 to it in this match here in Jamaica. Findlay has yet to play a test match. Ganga in 48 matches averages 25 and Samuels in 29 averages 28 and has as many 50s. Ganga spoiled his own career and I'm sure he is man enough to accept it. I don't understand how they've had better chances than Ganga to prove themselves at the international level.

Do your research properly and then comment. Don't just speak on emotion of wanting to see a T&T player on the Windies team.

what is obvious is that you are to consumed with critisizing tt that you dont realize the talent we possess and the observations i have made of the aforementioned players.

every team in the top 3 has consistently had a specialist fielder, south africa being one nation who emphasized on this, not to mention dwyane smith is an excellent bowler, i do believe you have seen him bowl, unless you only watch ja matches.

nash was called up after a few seasons of regionals ahead of players like ryan hinds who has consistently scored in the regionals, leading run scorer, best all rounder and has also taken more wickets than nash.

Ganga is the #1 contemporary captain in the west indies, consistency, once again, watching at other batsmen and their continual failure who have been given more chances and a long run, you tend to see that is it bias, insularity and racism.

If you want a scoop of what really is going on you should read some of Lara's Godfathers comments, maybe you will get the knowledge and sense needed to understand what really happens in the west indies. Yet you decide to ignore certain aspects maybe because you too are predjudicial in your outlook.

Once again, please go and look at the stats of lets say Benn, compared to jaggernauth in regionals and look at the chances jaggy has missed because of certain reasons, if you cannot point out those, you are no different than the rest.

Furthermore, the kolpack agreement does prevent collins from playing for the west indies, however the only reason collins had to resort to county cricket was bc the west indies was stuck on a garbage bowler like powell, maybe you should look at his stats also.

Talent and $1 will buy you a Guardian newspaper.

thats what you do on a regular basis, but im talking about talented youth cricketers like darren bravo, adrian barath which lara coaches and sees immense talent unlike your critical and never supporting self, lendl simmons who is more valuable than devon smith and xman, oh yea kieron pollard, sunil narine, william perkins also. when will you ever support your own trinis for once and stop sitting on the fence like an idiot and realize the talent we have.

trinidad and tobago, which country has the most youth talent? trinidad and tobago
Who has won the most regional competitions over the last 5 years?

Honest question.

thats a vague question, odis or tests, 20/20s or the kfc cup? you do remember we had 3 titles prior to this year

Again, if we were that good we wouldn't be in 4th place in the regional competition. We have some good looking players, but we are not good enough by any stretch of the imagination to go it alone. I will say again if the likes of Bermuda is our reason for going on our own then we have set the bar ridiculously low.

whats the reason we cant go it alone? bc we dont have pace? we have bravo, rampaul, youth pacers stewart, alert, gabriel, we have the best spinners in the region in mohammed, jaggerauth and now narine.

plus we have youth batsmen who will top class in years to come, barath, simmons, bravo jr, pollard.

so really, we can go it alone. we will beat a team like bangladesh, another bet im willing to take on, including nz, west indies and compete with the big 3

I agree with acb up to a point. Our current structure is decent as it is. Culturally though those community/borrough/state type competitions are more tricky to launch here. In places like England or Australia for example their local (state) governments have provisions to sponsor and support a county-like structure. Add to that corporate sponsorship, strong community support (bigger populations) and better infra-structure you'd find that we'd be hard pressed to duplicate a system like that.

If it isn't broke don't fix it. While we can always look at ways to improve what we have there's no reason to change it at this point.

the reasoning for a county league is to have our players playing regularly and take up cricket full time while having a good salary to do so. the reason why the aussies and south africa, england have done so well is bc their players play year round, we need to do this also.

I agree that they need to play more cricket and at a higher level as well, but completely changing the current system doesn't need to happen for that. They already have a well organised club system in place... innovate as rotatopoti said, and that can be as simple as adding competitions (cups, etc.).

this club system is still leaving many areas in trinidad untapped and especially tobago, if you have a county system it gives more opportunity to more players and youth development is increased, i never said get rid of the current system, the current system can stay but players will be enticed to play county cricket bc hey can make a living out of it, playing club cricket in trinidad doesnt guarantee that.

Any team with Dwayne Smith on it is shit, pure and simple. Ganga is good regionally, but a proven international failure. Collins is not eligible for the Windies because of a contract in England (since the Sri Lanka series last year). Your picks are dubious at best. They not beating anyone, not even this current Windies team.

so bc you put one of the best fielders in the world and caribbean on the side its shit, smith bowls better and felds better than powell, benn and many others. your not making sense.

when pedro collins was eligible he was snubbed, ganga still better than devon smith, samuels, xman, findlay, nash, all of them had greater chances, the selectors destroyed ganga's career

6674
Dale Richards
Adrian Barath
Darren Ganga
Ryan Hinds
Darren Bravo
Dwayne Smith
Dwayne Bravo
Lendl Simmons
Dave Mohammed
Amit Jaggernauth
Ravi Rampaul
Pedro Collins
Darren Sammy
Patrick Browne
Narsingh Deonarine

Ill put money on, if this was our A team, they would beat the senior team and other touring nations.

How long Bravo go be recovering? I saw him walking down Frederick Street a couple weeks ago. At this stage I don't think one pick is much different from another. The selectors are desperate and it shows. I think Chattergoon should have been given at least a match in this home series before dropping him. They also need to be more consistent with their spinner selection. Nikita Miller is a better Test match bowler than Benn, plus these guys need extended runs in the team. This in today out tomorrow thing is no good for them.

We'll see how they put together the team come match day. It seems like #4 and the opener are the problem spots in the batting line-up. Interesting to see if Devon Smith plays at 4 with Richards partnering Gayle or if they'll push Chanders to 4, Nash to 5 and Smith at 6.

mohammed and jaggy are better than both miller and benn by far, you could only be inspired so long after getting rejected and left off the team time and time again after performing well, you have no incentive to play if the selectors dont acknowledge your the best bc of which country you hail from or your race.

Ganga, richards, ryan hinds, dwayne smith, simmons, jaggernauth, mohammed, pedro collins, rampaul, sammy, barath and lil bravo based on the fact they picked marshall and he has a much lower avg than any of these youht batsmen in particluar.

We could have an a team just as strong or better than our team we are playing with right now

Cricket Anyone / Re: Xavier Marshall
« on: February 07, 2009, 10:29:48 AM »
He was being extremely sarcastic and not very subtle about it either. Marshall is certain to be dropped after this match. Everyone else has looked far more comfortable than him in this match, even Smith who made 6. We've been needing a good opener for some time now.

west indies have good openers and batsmen to replace these clowns, dale richards, ryan hinds, ganga, barath, simmons and recently bravo jr, the technique on the batsmen just listed are far superior to that of devon smith, marshall, nash and even sarwan i might add.

i wont even talk about bowlers bc benn shouldnt have been there in the 1st place but the insularity and racism in the west indies is more and more evident by the day, jaggernauth, mohammed then miller is the pecking order for spinners, benn couldnt even take a 5 wicket haul in regionals, which says alot for better spinners, i could imagine if jaggy got a chance or mohammed like benn has been given.

Cricket Anyone / The T&T County Cricket League?
« on: February 03, 2009, 10:41:52 PM »
Why not form a county cricket league in T&T?

You have 8 regions and 8 teams:

Tobago
Saint George
Saint David
Saint Andrew
Caroni
Nariva
Saint Patrick
Victoria
Mayaro

You have companies locally support the team and the multinationals, you have a ground in each county with a u19 u17 u15 development teams. You play when the regional season is not on or you play 7-8 months of the year, 1st class and odi cricket. Its fully pro and the players are never rusty, strength and conditioning coaches and etc etc. From here you select the national team and our county teams can tour other countries and play their county teams to uphold the intl standard.

Whats good about this is, you select the players from the county itself and current national players will be allocated to the different teams to make it fair. However, the remaining players and development players will be selected from the region and that will ensure talent is scouted throughout the entire island, so there is no untapped talent.

REGIONAL SUCCESS: Trinidad and Tobago cricketers celebrate after the fall of a Windward Islands wicket during the home team's 166-run victory, in the third round of the West Indies Cricket Board Tournament four-day match at Guaracara Park, Pointe-a-Pierre, last month. -Photo: STEPHEN DOOBAY

And now for something completely different. I mean, how else can you spin the fundamental principle of hoping for the best, yet bracing for the worst at the start of another West Indies Test series? That's why I've decided to give up this space today to regional broadcast manager and former sports commentator Bernard Pantin, who is pushing a very different head from my own view.

So, take it away Mighty Pantin:

Three months from now, ten countries will meet over 19 days to decide the four qualifiers for the 2011 Cricket World Cup. Among them, Afghanistan and Uganda-the two countries who qualified from the ICC's Division 3, the former defeating Cayman Islands in their final games. Yes, Afghanistan and Uganda, you read right.

Now, neither of these two teams is likely to proceed further, but four others will be chosen from teams like Scotland, United Arab Emirates, Oman and Namibia. So what are we waiting for?

For some time now, I have been seriously asking quietly why Trinidad and Tobago does not apply to the ICC (International Cricket Council) for separate status, and proceed through the normal phases to earn World Cup qualification.

As a first step, we ought not to have to start at the bottom rung in Division 5, because of the record in first-class cricket. But even if we had to, it would not take long before we climb the ladder to meet the likes of the Cayman Islands and Argentina in Division 3.

The first real challenge to progress would be in Division 2, and even there, history suggests that Trinidad and Tobago would have little trouble getting past the likes of Bermuda, Scotland and the Netherlands. The prize-a place in the World Cup and automatic One-Day International status.

Trinidad and Tobago would then qualify to entertain all countries for ODI matches, and four-day first-class fixtures, if not unofficial Test matches. Picture Trinidad and Tobago hosting ODI series against India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan over two weeks, with matches at the Queen's Park Oval, the hopefully-finished Brian Lara Stadium and the odd one at Guaracara Park, with warm-up games in Tobago.

Sponsorship will not be a problem, broadcast costs will be much less than that involved in travelling throughout the Caribbean, and visiting teams will be much happier not having to subject themselves to the vagaries of Caribbean travel.

Lest my Caribbean friends believe that this is a plain case of insularity, let's face it, we need something different, we need something new to address the state of West Indies cricket, and change does not need to stop with Trinidad and Tobago. The same avenue is open for all other countries in the region, particularly Jamaica and Barbados, so let's extend the concept a little further. Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, Barbados, Guyana and the OECS all embark on this journey.

Four of our West Indian teams should easily reach the Division 2 qualifiers. Yes, four of the 12 teams playing for four places in the World Cup.

It is conceivable that all four will reach the World Cup, although one would expect the draw may conspire against such an outcome. But one would assume that we would earn at least two places-that's two teams with ODI status.

This would only enhance the attractiveness of a visit to the Caribbean, for example, three matches in Barbados and a simple hop across to Trinidad and Tobago.

This is radical action, but so many have been calling for radical action to the West Indies cricket structure for more than a decade, with little success. The time has come to make a quantum leap.

So what's the first step? Well, unfortunately, we missed the boat, and have not moved early enough to implement this plan for the 2011 World Cup. So the objective will have to be 2015, and any other ICC events in between.

In many respects, this will give us time to build the structure and explore other opportunities. These include the following:

- Formalise a strong professional regional competition.

- Encourage each team to have regional sponsors-T&T sponsored by Carib, Jamaica by Red Stripe, Barbados by Banks, etc.

- Develop the right marketing strategy to bring crowds back to cricket, as these teams will now be playing for something bigger.

- Start the process of entertaining ICC Division 2 teams on a regular basis.

The naysayers will list all of the initial negative fallout of such a move- the loss of lucrative contracts for some individual players because of the dissolution of the West Indies.

Yet, even that does not have to happen. If only one or two countries decide to go on their own, the West Indies could still exist among the remaining countries. Given the current state of West Indies cricket, surely this is worth exploring.

The long-term implications include increased opportunities for players- the possibility of two or more teams represented at the World Cup, instead of one-the same kind of opportunities which exist in football, track and field and other sports, when we are represented separately at the Olympics.

Thanks, Bernard.

For me, this is a quantum leap too far. But what do you have to say?

Give me some feedback (brief responses, not dissertations), so Bernard and I will have some ammunition when we square-off on this issue on the "First Up" radio/TV programme next week.

In the meantime, there's cricket at Sabina Park to help pass the time.

the best news ever heard on here was latas as the asst head coach replacing corneal, training in argentina was necessary bc we have players on the fringe and players for the future, argentina aint no joke football. actually playing a pro team in argentina is better than playing guyana or a caribbean team, players playing on a club team would give a better test than playing a lower ranked national team who will have to assemble their players from diff clubs, especially since we couldnt get a higher ranked national team to play us, the next best thing is playing a club side in argentina bc they play a similar style of football to el salvador

why play a european team who plays a different style of football to el salvador? yes they may be good opponents but we arent playing a european team in february, were playing a central american team, hence playing in argentina where they are also latin and play a similar style.

but we should have carded a friendly against an international team along with the tour.... but say wa

I thought Chile was originally scheduled but pulled out

yea but we couldnt get on the phone with another South American/Central American Country?

playing teams from argentina in the 1st and 2nd div is better than playing guyana or any caribbean team, these are the teams that produce the future stars for argentina, they also play a similar brand of football to el salvador, from the video 2010 posted it looks like a good run, south americans love their football, even if its a practise match they will play to their fullest. yes it would have been good to get a national team, but these teams were an excellent warm up for el salvador.
