What is the capacity of the J'can stadium. It looks massive.

VB

Stadium official capacity is 35K when it was built in 1962. But i've seen it packed beyond that to the point. On a good day, it holds 40K.

Y we does have 2 b d flag bearers of Cbbean unity. If d JA brand ugly it ugly

Not sure exactly waht was ugly about Jamaica's play vs Mexico. If anything, I see a wonderful lobbed goal, which almost had Adres Cantor the famed Mexican commentator peeing on himself.

i watch this game last night, and for all their fight and determination it just remind me some more why i despise that ugly jamaican brand of football so much..

de bolton wanderers of concacaf...

minimal skill (apart from jamal ryce on de right) on display..

men just kicking the ball and running and pushing they way through.. i see a play a man kick the ball straight to a mexican run to him and push him down then keep going forward in 1 straight line...

is only pegs up wild tackle pelting and blade sharing.. and dem men doh look too coordinated either..

all the same congrats to them on their win, i hope they make the hex as i think we will quicker beat them than either of mexico or honduras.

Sour grapes as usual.

That Honduran team will not want to depend on beating Mexico in their final game to ensure qualification. They will be playing for a win in Kingston I feel. It will be a great match for the neutral.

After taking a look at the three goals Honduras scored to sink Canada, I have to say their offence look to be the best I've seen so far in this round. And I say this without seeing Costa Rica play yet in this round. It will take more than one goals to settle this one.

Lets get this right,no one is disputing the fact that Mexico is the best but they just haven't looked the team we know they can be,they were below par against Jamaica and if they play like that against Honduras they would be beaten, that would be bad for the Yard.Yes both TT and Yard messed up with their selection policy and that is why we are where we are presently.I still hope that both teams get through but realistically TT stands a better chance although you can never make judgements in sports.

Look at it another way. They look below par because they are playing  in a tough group. There are no weak teams in the group, no Cubas or Surinames for the Mexicans to clobber 8-0 in the Azteca. On paper, Honduras, Canada, and to a lesser extent Jamaica has enough quality players in their side to beat Mexico on their day, as evidenced by last night win for Jamaica. This group didnt get the "group of death" title by accident. Something tells me that the teams from this group that make it to the Hex will find things easier when they get there. But I might be wrong.

That win for Jamaica was expected because Mexico have not lived up to their reputation as top dogs in the region. They have won their matches but none were really convincing as you would normally expect.I dont expect a glut of goals from them but their victories were were not comfortable ones, the kind we know about.I feel Honduras could beat them, that would end the Yard's dream.Just a little mention bout TT,if we continue to play like we did yesterday then we could take a point off the USA or even beat them, the latter seems quite possible,a big win against the Cubans is expected. We are almost there.

Mexico is CONCACAF's top team, have been, and will continue to be. For all the dominance the USA has had over the years, they are yet to attain the heights Mexico has attained in world football. The Mexicans have been the most consistent nation in CONCACAF, and have the human and financial resources to match any team in the world, including the USA. When last Brazil beat Mexico?

Its funny that you say Jamaica was expected to win this game, after the fact, a far cry for the predictions that everyone were making prior to the start of the semi-final rounds. Jamaica's dilemma right now is that we could win all their remaining games and still not progress, a problem that we put ourselves in after Simoes introduced a number of inexperiende players in the firt round of this round.  Honduras is playing good football, and in my mind, look good for a spot in South Africa, and perhaps deserve it more than Jamaica.  Canada was a hot favorite to advance with Mexico from the group...they have already been eliminated, and looks to be the beating stick of the group.

T&T is not out the woods either. You and Guatemala will battle it out down to the wire to see who makes it with the USA. It will come down to who gets the better reult vs USA in the remaining games.....and who can put more goals in the Cuba Net.

Advantage T&T.

By the way, that goal by Fuller was world class.

Has Jamaica ever beaten Mexico ?

How long now you been following CONCACAF football? Jamaica topped a semi-final group that included Mexico and Honduras in 1997. They beat Mexico 1-0 in Kingston and lost 2-1 in the Azteca. Mexico had players like Garcia Aspe, Carlos hermosillo, Zague, Jorge Campos, Marcelino Bernal, Benjamin Galindo etc in those days.

Also, Jamaica tied Mexico 1-1 later in the hex at home to qualify for France '98 that same year.

Football / Re: Leonson Lewis. Was he really that good?
« on: September 20, 2008, 04:19:20 PM »
I had the pleasure of watching both Leonson Lewis, Russel Latapy and another player called Micheal Rosales play in what was perhaps the Caribbean's only truely professional football club at the time Port Morant United (PMU). Lewis was a true striker, who was hands down the best player in the Jamaica league for the 3 or so seasons he played there. The PMU midfield was being marshalled at the time by Hug "Bingie" Blair, Russel Latapy, Wayne Palmer and former Jamaica stand out Alan "Skill" Cole (who to this day remains the caribbeans only player to have played professionally in the Brazil top flight)

In fact, Many Jamaicans who saw Latapy and Lewis play would quickly give Lewis the edge as the better player of the two.

In any case, our fortunes are not totally in our hands. We can win all our remaining games and still not make it to the Hex.

No predictions this time?

I remember last time yuh guarantee us that JA was making it to the Hex.

as a die-hard fan, yes, I will always gurantee that my side will progress. And I still feel that way.

And 'm convinced that if we make the Hex, we going all the way to SA.

1 - You were convinced you would make the Hex too.  Not so sure anymore?

2 - For you to make the Hex, not only would you have to win your next 3 games, but you would have to hope that BOTH Mexico AND Canada beat Honduras in Honduras.  The maximum points you can get is 10.  Honduras already has 6 points with 2 homes games left out of their 3.  If they beat Canada and draw against Mexico in Tegucicalpa, they too will have 10 points and they have a superior goal difference to Jamaica.

Mexico MIGHT beat Honduras in Honduras...but Mexico would all have qualified by then so that eh no certainty.  Canada NOT beatin Honduras nowhere on dis planet.

But keep hope halive bro.

Also Mexico has 3 road games and where is the easiest place for them to earn points RF ....!!!

Easiest place to get road ponts is canada. They have so far played 2 home games, and are yet to win there. Both Jamaica and Honduras has taken pints off them at home.

Reggae-fan like u gettin on like reggaefan what betta life in JA not even when all yuh $ was higher than d US it was betta than TNT

What the value of the $ have to do with anything? you obviously dont understand economics.

I doubt Barnes would leave T&T for Jamaica to live a sub-standard life. the man left for better opportunities in the Jamaica military.

Now lets get back to football.

Theodore Whitmore will take charge of those World Cup games, staying on as Barnes' assistant after.

Anytime Whitmore qualify JA for the HEX it will be an injustice and a travesty for him to be an assistant after.

The selection of barnes is a smokescreen to pacify the public.

It is only fair whitmore gets the job if he passes the exam.

Good scene for Whitmore. Regardless of the outcome of WCQ ... this is a good scene for him ... at the end of the day he'll have attained more current/recent WCQ experience than JB.

Whitmore has lots of support in Jamaica to fill this role and I think the "JFF" arrived at this solution in recognition of this ... as well as the fact that any foreign coach coming in wouldn't have a clue about the players. Top to bottom this is the best man to run things from here on in ... thing is, even if he pulls it off, I doubt the Jamaican public would be willing to entrust the Hex to him. Enter any scapegoat here.

Jamaica will be looking for a coach in fairly short order. I doubt JB will be around a year from now.

Barnes signed a one year contract. The idea is that he will work with Whitmore during the Hex (if we get there), during the Caribbean cup, and then the gold cup. After that, he will be re-assesed. If we make the Hex and qualify for the Gold cup, then expect Barnes' contract to be extended beyond one year. And 'm convinced that if we make the Hex, we going all the way to SA.

Dont understand why you guys are getting excited (or is it that you are getting worried?). Jamaica has picked up a road point so far, and still have an opportunity to win all 3 remaining home games. Didnt you guys drop 2 home pointx to guatemala the other day? A victory for Guatemala in the next game could effectively put you in a worse situation that which Jamaica finds itself now.  Its not a matter of Ja throwing in the towel, its a matter of the JFF having the balls to take action before its too late.

I like Simoes as a coach, but unfortunately for him, his selectinn policy left alot to be desired.

Seem like JA  throw in the towel

Not neccisarily. With 3 home games remaining, and with Simoes continued non-selection of key players, this is an attempt to turn things around. There is no way all of 4 kids should have been given debuts in critical world cup qualifying games while seasoned players watch form the sidelines.

In any case, our fortunes are not totally in our hands. We can win all our remaining games and still not make it to the Hex.

Barnes named new coach of Jamaica

By Jonathan Stevenson

Barnes has been keen to get back into management since leaving Celtic

England and Liverpool great John Barnes has been named as the new national coach of Jamaica.
The 44-year-old Jamaican-born former England winger has been chosen to replace Brazilian Rene Simoes, who was sacked as technical director last week.
"The Jamaica Football Federation announces the appointment of Mr Barnes and he will take up official duties on 1 November," said a statement.
Barnes' last post in management ended with the sack at Celtic in 2000.
The JFF statement continued: "Mr Barnes will be in charge of the preparation of the national team for the Digicel Caribbean Cup (DCC) between 1 and 15 December and the Concacaf Gold Cup scheduled for June 2009.
"He will also be in charge of the final round of World Cup Qualifiers in 2009, should Jamaica advance to this stage of the competition.
"Mr Barnes' contract will be reviewed following the aforementioned events."
Jamaica are currently last in their four-team World Cup qualifying group on one point from three games, with three games remaining. To have a chance of advancing to the final stage of the Concacaf qualifying round, they must beat Mexico, Honduras and Canada and hope other results go their way. Former Hull and Tranmere midfielder Theodore Whitmore will take charge of those World Cup games, staying on as Barnes' assistant after.

Ottawa, Ontario – The Canadian Soccer Association today announced it has received and accepted the resignation of Canadian Men’s World Team Head Coach Dale Mitchell, effective immediately.

The CSA will immediately begin the search for a replacement. Women’s World Cup and Olympic Team Coach Evan Pellerud will handle the head coaching responsibilities for Canada’s remaining matches in its group in CONCACAF Stage III of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ Qualifiers. A new head coach is expected to be chosen and in place by December, 2008.

“I wish to take this opportunity to thank Dale publicly for his commitment and accomplishments with the Men’s World Cup Team,” said CSA President Dominic Maestracci. “Both sides agreed that it was time for us to move in a new direction.”

Mitchell was hired by the CSA on May 17, 2007 and in one year posted a record of 3-5-4 in 12 games in charge of the Men’s World Cup Team.

“There comes a moment in every coach’s career when it is time to move on and that moment has come for me,” said Mitchell. “I have truly enjoyed my experiences with the Canadian squad and will look back on many fond memories. I wish the team well in the future.”

They should have kept Rene Simoes, he was under contract anyway and will still get paid....

Barnes cant coach.... believe it or not.

Barnes doesnt have a proven coaching record. But neither did Klinnsmann when he took over the coaching job in Germany. Not saying Barnes will have instant success with Jamaica, but i'd be willing to give him the reigns for the next 3 games and see what happens. If he works some sort of miracle and get us through to the next round, then surely he must be doing something right.

Regarding Simoes gettingh paid for the remainder of his contract. Not really. It depends on how the contract was written. There is a "performance" clause written in his contract...fact that we are at the foot of the table after 3 games might entitle him to only one months pay  after he was fired. Same thing with Boras contract too.

Could any one tell me how many Coaches Jamaica change/fired since after qualifying for the WC?can any one tell me how good the level of their Football is (teams/league)?they have more foreign based players than us,what i'm trying to say is,what's the problem?why everybody's problem is with the Coach?imagine they run Bora, who else they will run.

Simoes got fired because of his selection policy. you dont pay a man a salary of US$50K per month to have us finish bottom of the pile. Simoes is reportedly the 3rd best paid coach in CONCACAF behind Mexico and the USA. To whome much is given, much is expected.

It makes no sense you call a strong squad for the Bahamas, then turn around and discard half of them for the tougher games.

Jamaica money run out, so dey just use de cut arse as ah excuse tuh fire Simones.Ah hear dey did offer him 10 pound ah hard ting instead and he refuse, so dey fire he arse.Latest news coming outta jamdown is reggaefaggot, lionpussy and jamette2009 fighting for de wuk.

Simoes salary is paid in part by the Jamaica government (US$500K per year). Fact of the matter is for the money Simoes and his staff getting, much much more was expected of him. His tag line in the media in recnt times have been "The best players are not always the right players", which when you think of it, makes absolutely no sense.

Jamaica is not Brazil. We dont have the talent pool to pick up 19 and 18 year old kids and throw them into a tough world cup qualifying series and expect them to come out of a group that includes 3 of the top teams in the region, while seasoned professionals, many with over 30 international caps look on from the sidelines.

I see Maturana pulling the same thing with T&T to a smaller extent too...Stern John is avaialable for selection but not playing. Totally different story from what happen in Central America, they have all their big guns availabale at all cost.

spend the US$1M on something else. Goodbye Rene.
