LONDON, England (CNN) -- A survey by football's governing body FIFA has found that more than half of South African people are worried about the country's high crime rate impacting the 2010 World Cup.
South Africans are happy to have the World Cup, but worried about crime during the event.

South Africans are happy to have the World Cup, but worried about crime during the event.

The World Cup, which goes to South Africa for the first time next year, is the beautiful game's showpiece event and is expected to attract global interest in the African nation.

FIFA's survey showed 53 percent of people were worried that the nation's crime rate -- which is one of the highest in the world -- could affect the event, which is now less than 500 days away.

Official statistics from the country show violent crime is a major issue, with more than 17,000 murders and almost 137,000 serious and violent assaults recorded in 2007.

Despite the concerns, more South Africans (77%) now believe the World Cup will be a success, and 91% of people believe the event will have a positive effect on the country's tourism sector, the survey found.

Overall, 88% of people said they were "proud" that South Africa was hosting the 2010 event.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter said security at the event would be very tight.

"Through the competition, there will be extremely tight security, just as there is at the Olympic Games and other huge sporting events. We hope that this security will be maintained after the World Cup in order to ensure that we have left a legacy," Blatter said.

One thousand people were questioned for the FIFA survey.

the season ends in May...

But I will say this... The ball is round, the game lasts 90 minutes, everything else is pure theory...

the table does not lie though... Liverpool are where they are because they have lost 1 game to Spurs... they have drawn too many games as well...

Regardless, the red half of Manchester can't afford to lose any games either...

Let's see what transpires, eh fellas...

Football / AIG & Manchester United
« on: January 21, 2009, 03:06:12 AM »
Insurance firm AIG is to end its sponsorship deal with Manchester United.

The American company also said in a statement that it was "in active discussions" with Manchester United regarding the current contract, which expires in May 2010.

Usually when the term "in active discussions" is used, it means that there are talks to dissolve the agreement in order to save money.

It is widely known that AIG has been a major casualty of the present global financial crisis and had to bailed out by the Bush administration to the tune of $85 billion, that signaled the intensity of its concerns about the danger a collapse could pose to the financial system. The U.S. government seized control of American International Group Inc. -- one of the world's biggest insurers.

AIG was a major seller of "credit-default swaps," essentially insurance against default on assets tied to corporate debt and mortgage securities.

Football / Re: Pato
« on: January 17, 2009, 04:47:11 PM »
Is he the next in the line of ultra-prolific Brazilian out & out center forwards..

Careca, Romario, Ronaldo, Adriano, Pato?

This season he has looked unstoppable at times...

At 19, if he continues to improve it's scary to think how good he will get.

All the hype at Milan nowadays is around Beckham (arriving) and Kaka (now that he might leave), but the real shining star in my opinion has been Pato.

What kinda price tag y'all feel this fella will have when teams decide to target him?

He is de business...

buh wha bout RIVALDO???

48
buh still

wha does it take for a small side (wid passion, skills and no money) to win de Title?...

huh?... wha?...

is it de system, chemistry, concentration?... tactics?... hours training on the pitch working on set pieces?...

because surely, dey cyah compete on de cyash front...

49
buh still de question remains:

wha a "small squad" hadda do to win de title??? we could look at all de examples of everybody else and dey academies, buh when Kaka is being tapped up and offered £500,000 a week... it hadda make yuh wonder?...

does it really take money an' ah doggedness dat go make even a youth dat "belong to Jesus" sell out for a clause in a contrac'  ???

or should dat money be better invested in "scouting for talent"  ???

Football / Re: Sbragia scuppers Jones' Tottenham move
« on: January 15, 2009, 08:03:34 AM »
sad... but still, ah could see why...

51
The cream will always rise to the top... whether it be players through academy ranks, teams winning competitions and trophies, or moneymen pumping cyash into the game...

this is a moot point...

I ask because it seems to me like you ignore the reality of the situation and how unfairly weighted the league is to traditional powerhouses.

with that history comes the recognition that quality brings.. Sir Alex was brought in to "knock Liverpool off their perch"... the successes tha' that team has achieved is possible for any team, money or not... I remember listening after one match in the Serie A, about one young player speaking about not ever wanting to leave because of the chemistry his team has... no it was not Kaka...

Firstly, year after year, the top clubs rake in the most money from TV and sponsorship deals, gates and winnings. the TV money is ruining the game... but it also necessary... look at what they do in the BundesLiga... a game could be played now, and thegoals could be on the TV in 2 hours... all on FREE TV... yuh eh have to pay for games... Sky and SATANta should take note...

If that not bad enough, the top 2 clubs get glaringly preferential treatment from referees and the FA.

Bobol... everywhere...

Go On VILLA!!!!

To answer the las bit...

give me a squad with spirit, experience, passion and flair and I will give you a system to win a title...

can you have it all.. I say yes!

Rafa coachin not lose and confirming Fergie's point that he overpay for Keane. Also his inflexible ways will cost Shiterpool third place!

I wish somebody could find the original Keane thread. I rememebr when everybody was praising him I was saying that Rafa would not be able to get the most out of him.

When this season done, if Liverpool does not win the title they will use Keane as a bat to beat Rafa, and justifiably so.

Why buy the any player and not show any confidence in him?  It is his job to utilize his strengths so he needs to put him in spots to help him contribute to the cause.

it still have 17 games to go yuh know... and once we play the player in games where his "brand" could be most effective, we will be okay...

he likes to score against big teams... hear nuh... he might be frustrated, but all de same, Harry and Spurs in de bottom half.. both keane and Berba (as lazy as he is) scorin' goals. de player is a Liverpool player now, ah hadda back him to deliver de goals...

de season ends in May... remember dat fellas (and ladies, ah eh want to offend... ;D)

be good!

Thanks for this thread fellas.

it seems like we cyah get de credit we deserve at all...

ah like de post about de fac' dat Rafa (who is ah BOSS! and will win his firs' Prem title in less time than it take a certain wine drinking Scotsman to win his) play young charges in dis campaign... if Momo eye injury didn't happen it was worries for all ah dem squad an dem too.

Fac's is fac's

Lucas is Brazil's U21 Captain...

Maradona pick Mascherano to be he Captain...

Torres on everybody wishlis'

Gerrard is de mos' dynamic and complete midfielder bar none... yes, bar NONE. (and as for Milan givin we dat title in '05, ah t'ink we well return de compliment in '07 yeah?)

Pepe Reina, makin saves dat have Iker sendin him tex messages every time he play,

Carra + Agger=passion & brains (even Milan want de Dane)

Carra + Sami=passion & experience (offers from all over de world to break dat partnership up)

Arbeloa keep Ronaldinho quiet 2 seasons runnin in Spain

Aurelio (when fit) is lethal for a Brazilian defender in the mould of de overlappin wing back.

Keane (is irelands leading scorer of all time and) only needs time to deal wid de heat.

if Pennant was a Trini he was walking straight into we Nati squad...

Babel and Kuyt is Holland strike force...

El-Zhar and Yossi is de beacons of de peace process dat Israel and de Palestinians could learn from

N'gog scorin goals...

Now, even if we doh win de league, trus' me, we have NO NEED to spen' money... and even if we did Sunderland eh go part wid Kenwyne

De only ting we missin':

is Bastien Schweinstiger or Philip Lahm jus to have a German in de mix...

Oh and before ah forget

Dossena is Not For Sale...

many thanks fellas...

Come on you Reds
Rafa is a Genius
