TWO current title holders, Chutney Monarch “Falco” (Ramdeen Maharaj) and Stars of Tomorrow winner “Guidance” (Asten Isaac) are among the 12 finalists in tonight’s 26th Annual Young Kings Calypso Monarch Competition which comes off at the New Bayside Deck, Pier1, Williams Bay, Chaguaramas at 7 pm. Soca Monarch judge Roland Gordon dies after stroke
Wayne Bowman wayne.bowman@trinidadexpress.com

Saturday, January 30th 2010

big loss: Roland Gordon

Musical director of the Malick Folk Performers, Roland Gordon, died at the Mount Hope Medical Sciences Complex yesterday where he was a patient after suffering a stroke on Tuesday.

Gordon served as chief judge at the semifinals of the International Soca Monarch competition at the Arima Velodrome last Sunday where he and his team looked at the performances of more than 80 artistes from about 5.30 p.m. to after 3 am Monday .

Gordon’s son, soca artiste Roderick ’Chucky’ Gordon, who is in the finals of the Soca Monarch Groovy category, discovered his father was ill and rushed him to hospital. Up until Monday when he was working on tabulating scores from the Soca Monarch semis, Gordon showed no signs of being ill.

The musician, actor and teacher had been serving as chief judge of Soca Monarch for nine years and was involved in the Best Village competition on several levels. Gordon also played in parang bands and judged in the junior and senior calypso monarch competitions.

William Munro, chairman of Caribbean Prestige Foundation, producer of the Soca Monarch, was shocked by Gordon’s sudden illness and subsequent death. Munro said Gordon’s passing was a great loss for artistes in Trinidad and the other Caribbean islands where he also worked with artistes.

Reigning Chutney Soca Monarch Kenneth Salick will take the stage first as he attempts to defend his title during tomorrow’s finals of the NLCB Chutney Soca Monarch Competition at Skinner Park, San Fernando.

Salick, whose hit “Radica”, won him first place last year, would hope that performing first would be an indication of the final results. More than $600,000 is up for grabs with 11 other artistes vying for the first prize of $200,000. Each artiste also is guaranteed a purse of $30,000. A variety of entertainment, including moko jumbies, pan- round-the-neck, the Shiv Shakti dancers, Anil Bheem and Shurwayne Winchester are scheduled to be the opening acts for the event. After the competition, there also would be performances by a host of chutney/soca bands, including Karma, BMRZ, JMC 3Veni, Spread Pal Crew and the Gayatones.

This year, the new monarch would be decided solely by text voting on the bmobile network with each artiste having his own code. Between 8 pm and 2 am, people would be able to text to SOCA to vote for their favourite artiste. The results are expected to be announced at 3 am.

The order of appearance of the finalists as well as their text codes are:
1- Kenneth Salick- KES

Pilot shot dead in fight with bandits
From: Trinidad & Tobago Express

Tuesday, January 26th 2010

A CARIBBEAN Airlines pilot was shot dead after confronting bandits at his Glencoe home yesterday afternoon.

Riaz Baksh was 54 and lived at 19 Atlantic Avenue, Glencoe, a quiet, shaded, relatively upscale neighbourhood.

Police said at around 4.10 p.m., Baksh had pulled into the driveway of his home after opening his remote controlled gate. As he drove in he was confronted by ’an unknown number’ of bandits.

Police believe he struggled with these men when they attacked him. One of the bandits fired a shot, hitting Baksh to his chest. The bandits then fled.

A bleeding Baksh, police said, ran into the roadway where he collapsed. Neighbours telephoned both the police and some of Baksh’s relatives, who themselves arrived and took him to the St Clair Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police from both the Four Roads and the St James Police Stations arrived on the scene and conducted initial investigations. No arrests had been made up to last night.

The murder toll stood at 34 up to last night.

From yahoo sports:
Cabanas out of surgery; bullet lodged in skull

By STEPHEN WADE, AP Sports Writer

MEXICO CITY (AP)—Paraguay’s top footballer Salvador Cabanas was in critical but stable condition on Monday following surgery in which doctors failed to remove a bullet lodged in his skull.

Dr. Ernesto Martinez, who was part of the surgical team, told reporters he could not say that the Paraguay striker was out of life-threatening danger, but he called his condition stable.

Cabanas, expected to lead Paraguay when the World Cup opens in June, was shot in the head in a pre-dawn attack on Monday at “Bar Bar,” a popular nightspot in a well-off Mexico City neighborhood.

“We cannot guarantee that his life is out of danger,” Martinez said.

“Injuries like this are unpredictable,” he added. “We don’t know what kind after effects he might have—perhaps none, or perhaps there will be many. We don’t know right now.”

Mexico City Attorney General Miguel Angel Mancera, after visiting the bar, said that robbery did not appear to be the motive in the attack on the forward who plays for Mexico City club America.

“At this moment we do not think the motive was robbery because nothing was taken,” Mancera told reporters at the crime scene.

America club president Michel Bauer said Cabanas was conscious when he arrived at the Mexico City hospital and was speaking as he prepared for surgery to remove a bullet lodged in the front part of his skull.

“He was a bit confused and didn’t know what had happened and he was asking where they were taking him and why they were taking him there,” Bauer told Mexico television Televisa.

Bauer said Cabanas’ wife told him the two were preparing to leave the bar when the shooting took place in a bathroom. His wife said she found her husband on the bathroom floor.

Mancera told reporters that four people were being questioned, two security guards and the manager of the bar, and a fourth person he identified as Cabanas’ brother-in-law. He said the brother-in-law volunteered to testify.

Authorities in the city’s leafy Alvaro Obregon borough ordered the bar closed Monday, saying it had failed to provide adequate security for its customers based on the Cabanas shooting.

Borough spokeswoman Georgina Pineda said the bar’s late closing hours—the shooting reportedly took place an hour or two before dawn—were not the reason for the closure. Pineda said it had operated with a permit as a “private club” that exempted it from normal closing hours, though alcohol sales were supposed to stop in the early morning hours.

Pineda said authorities had not received any previous complaints about the bar.

However, the city government said in statement that it will demand borough authorities take more steps to ensure such businesses do not violate licensing rules and closing-time regulations.

Cabanas, 29, has played in the Mexico league since 2003 and is the highest profile player on the Paraguay national team, which will face Italy, New Zealand and Slovakia in the group stage of the World Cup in South Africa in June.

Cabanas has scored 125 goals in 218 matches in Mexico. Earlier this month he attracted the attention of Sunderland manager Steve Bruce, who expressed interest in bringing Cabanas to the Premier League club. Reports suggested the deal may have fizzled because America’s asking price was too high.

“Club America is deeply sorry for what happened to our beloved Salvador Cabanas and shows its total support for his family and loved ones,” the Mexican club said in a statement.

Cabanas played over the weekend in America’s 2-0 loss to Morelia.

Paraguayan Football Association president Juan Angel Napout said a doctor would travel to Mexico to aid Cabanas in his recovery.

“We are praying for him,” Napout said.

Cabanas was named the South American football player of the year in 2007 by Uruguay’s El Pais newspaper, the only time a player in Mexico has won the award.

There is a long history of violence involving Latin American football players.

In probably the most notorious case, Colombia defender Andres Escobar was shot and killed in Colombia only days after his own-goal helped the United States defeat the Colombians 2-1 in a major upset at the 1994 World Cup.

Unsung hero passes

Nerlin 'Lynn' Taitt, born Jun 22, 1934 in San Fernando and died January 20, 2010 at the age of 75 in Montreal, Canada.  Pictured above at age 70 in Nov 2005. Lynn, as he was called by those he knew him, had a life long career in music.  From his early days with steelpan in Trinidad to his work in Jamaica before migrating to Canada, Lynn did what he loved until the end. Lynn's arranging skills and natural talent had an impact on Ska, which lead to the Rock steady beat; out of which Reggae was born.  His first influence on Jamaican music came when he arranged for Hopeton Lewis.  Although in talking with Lynn, he never expected recognition for doing what he loved.  Ironically, most of his recognition came through documentation from a Canadian, Jim Dooley.  WACK is the only radio station in Trinidad that had the opportunity to interview Mr. Taiit recently. You can listen to that interview, a mini bio of Mr. Taitt, on our podcast.  The Management and Staff of WACK 90.1 extend our deepest condolences to the Taitt family.
Lynn went to Jamaica with his band in August 1963 to play for an event honouring Jamaica's first independence.  After not being paid for that event by the band's manager, Lynn and his band decided to stay in Jamaica, where he linked up with Byron Lee who helped them with lodging and additional work for the band.  Lynn Taitt and the Jets was very popular as rock steady became more known. Lynn played with and toured the UK, Japan and Canada with the Skatalites. On one such trip to Toronto in 1968, where they were invited to play for the first West Indian festival in Toronto, Lynn decided to stay in Canada. After a few years with the band moving around the country, Lynn settled in Montreal where he lived until his death.  Lyn has arranged for numerous artists in the Calypso fraternity in Canada.  Twice he was invited to play for the Montreal Jazz Festival.  Lynn was an accomplished arranger, pannist, and guitarist who wrote his own music.  He also played the piano/keyboard.  Though Lynn had few recordings, his work will live on in the hundreds if not thousands of songs he arranged for artists in Jamaica and Canada.

Lynn is pictured below in his home studio in Montreal in 2005 at age 70.  Photos, courtesy of Jim Dooley.  Initial research for the interview was done by Marlene Simon of WACK, with assistance from Jim Dooley to whom I forever grateful.

T&T newsman stranded in DR
Passport lost on bus trip
Kristy Ramnarine kramnarie@trinidadexpress.com

Saturday, January 23rd 2010

hellish experience: Dale Enoch

TRINIDADIAN journalist Dale Enoch is now stranded in the Dominican Republic after his passport went missing.

The I95.5 FM Head of News and Current Affairs and his colleague, Head of Production Jerome Lewis, have been covering the aftermath of the catastrophic 7.0 earthquake which hit Haiti on January 12.

Enoch and Lewis left Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday to head to Haiti. The men boarded a Caribbean Airlines flight to St Maarten where they managed to get on a flight to the Dominican Republic, which borders Haiti.

In the Dominican Republic’s capital, Santo Domingo, the men boarded a bus operated by Caribbean Tours in order to enter Haiti.

’Once you take the bus you have to hand in your passport at the border,’ said Enoch in a telephone interview yesterday.

’We entered Haiti on Tuesday and we got back in the Dominican Republic yesterday (Thursday). I did not get back my passport when we returned. The bus company has refused to take responsibility for the situation. They are saying that they didn’t see the passport. That is ridiculous because I handed in the passport when I bought the ticket to Haiti.’

He added, ’It appears that there is a passport racket going on. Once your passport has a US visa in it, it is attractive.’

Enoch is now advising people going to Haiti to be careful before being trapped in a position like him.

’I was supposed to leave Santo Domingo on Thursday but I was unable to because I don’t have my travel documents. I lost all my bookings. Being trapped in a country is like being trapped in hell,’ he said.

Enoch has been in contact with the Minister of Foreign Affairs Paula Gopee-Scoon, who is assisting in getting him temporary travel documents.

He has also been in contact with the Consulate in Santo Domingo, who is waiting on the Jamaican High Commission, which is the closest to the Dominican Republic, to issue the temporary travel documents.

Enoch is hoping that before the end of the week he will receive the travel documents and be able to return home. Lewis has decided to remain with Enoch until the matter is sorted out.

THE SOCA artiste who was allegedly involved in a robbery at a candy outlet remained in police custody yesterday.

The 30-year-old entertainer, along with two other men, allegedly were on a mission to rob the outlet in Freeport on Wednesday.

Police initially reported that the robbery attempt happened at a candy factory in Couva.

The suspects were about to enter the business when an employee raised an alarm and the suspects drove away in a silver coloured Nissan Almera.

The car was traced and the registration number was found to belong to the Enterprise, Chaguanas, singer.

The car was intercepted at Egret Street, Lange Park, and a man was detained. The 30-year-old artiste was later arrested. A third man was found in a Chaguanas-bound taxi.

Police said the men will be placed before identification parades before charges are considered.

Cops hold soca star in failed Central robbery
Carolyn Kissoon South Bureau

Thursday, January 21st 2010

A popular dancehall/ soca artiste was among three men arrested yesterday, following an attempted robbery in Central Trinidad.

Police said the men attempted to enter KC Confectionery’s headquarters as it was about to open for business around 8 a.m.

The candy factory is located along the Couva Main Road, near the police station.

But as the men were about to enter the compound, an employee raised an alarm and the suspects ran away.

Two were seen leaving the area in a silver Nissan Almera car. The third man got into a taxi.

A report was made at the nearby Couva Police Station, and an all-points bulletin was issued.

Investigators traced the registration number on the car and found it belonged to the entertainer, who lives at Enterprise, Chaguanas.

Acting Cpl Nelson and PC Khan, attached to the Crime Patrol Unit, spotted the car heading east along the Chaguanas Main Road. The car was intercepted at Egret Street, Lange Park, and a Montrose man was detained. The officers, acting on information, went to the Chaguanas Main Road where they arrested the 30-year-old soca artiste.

The third suspect was held in a taxi bound for Chaguanas. The three men were being questioned by police last evening.

They are expected to appear before several identification parades before charges are laid.
