Senegal offers land to Haitians

Senegal's president says he will offer free land and "repatriation" to people affected by the earthquake in Haiti.

President Abdoulaye Wade said Haitians were sons and daughters of Africa since Haiti was founded by slaves, including some thought to be from Senegal.

"The president is offering voluntary repatriation to any Haitian that wants to return to their origin," said Mr Wade's spokesman, Mamadou Bemba Ndiaye.

Tuesday's earthquake killed tens of thousands and left many more homeless.

Buildings have been reduced to rubble, the distribution of aid is slow, and people have been flooding out of the devastated capital, Port-au-Prince.

"Senegal is ready to offer them parcels of land - even an entire region. It all depends on how many Haitians come," Mr Bemba Ndiaye said.

"If it's just a few individuals, then we will likely offer them housing or small pieces of land. If they come en masse we are ready to give them a region."

The spokesman emphasised that if a region was given, it would be in a fertile part of the country rather than in its parched deserts, the Associated Press news agency reported.

Great!! more rewards coming, those people went through hell for far too long.

AWS D1.1 Structural Steel code book is the bible for erecting steel buildings and it is being updated every few years or so.
Trinidad recently erected new structures, god..  i hope this code book was used during construction.

with the role france play in haiti, dey might be using a european building code  ???

Especially since many of the large, tall building in POS designed by French men.

Major info here: International organization for standardization (ISO) establishment of uniform standards for use in international trade and exchange of services  is made up of more than 80 countries and has adopted or developed over 4000 standards. ANSI is the designated U.S. representative to ISO.

Does France belong to ISO ? if so..and at that time did anything got built by code enforcement laws back then?

The building codes in TT should read: Anything AS tall AS a coco-nut 3 should follow japanese and california structural building codes.

All of California structural code uses the D1.1

Ponting is Player of the Decade
Published: 15 Jan 2010

Ricky Ponting...top player of the decade

Ricky Ponting has been voted Player of the Decade by the overwhelming majority of a jury comprising former and current players and cricket writers. Ponting got 60 points (a first-place vote fetched three points, a second place two, and third place one), 23 more than second-placed Jacques Kallis. Adam Gilchrist was ranked third (29 points), while positions four to eight went to Muttiah Muralitharan, Glenn McGrath, Sachin Tendulkar and Shane Warne. West Indians Brian Lara, eighth, and Shivnarine Chanderpaul were the only two West Indians in the top ten.

Ponting scored more runs and centuries in both forms of the game than any other batsman in the decade, and he was the only one to go past the 9000-mark in both Tests and ODIs. In 107 Tests between 2000 and 2009, he scored 9458 runs at 58.38, and 32 of his 38 centuries. Ponting and Kallis, along with Mohammad Yousuf, were the only batsmen to average more than 58 in Tests in the decade. Ian Chappell, the former Australian captain who was part of the jury, said Ponting’s ability to survive difficult periods and also counterattack successfully, made him the best batsman of the decade. New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori said Ponting was the player of the decade “for his ability to dominate bowlers all across the world for such a long time.”

Tony Greig, the former England captain, said there hadn’t been a modern allrounder who produced as consistently with bat and ball as Kallis did. “Jacques Kallis has been Sobers-like in respect of his all-round contribution for South Africa.” Lara and Tendulkar didn’t fare too well. Lara got just three points, after featuring as No 1 in one juror’s list. Of the 13 jurors who voted for Tendulkar, only three rated him as No 1. Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, Matthew Hayden, Graeme Smith, Inzamam-ul-Haq and Mohammad Yousuf were among those who did not get any votes. Apart from Chappell and Vettori, the 38-member jury included Graham Gooch, John Buchanan, Tom Moody, Javagal Srinath, Geoff Boycott, Mushtaq Ahmed, Rashid Latif, David Lloyd, Ranjan Madugalle, Tony Greig and Geoff Lawson.

Ponting got 13 No 1 votes, eight more than Kallis. Gilchrist, who got seven No 1 places, lost out overall because he got only three No 2 slots as compared to Kallis nine. A clear indication of Ponting’s domination was that while he didn’t figure at all in nine juror lists, Kallis was missing from 20. A pointer also, to Australia’s pre-eminence as a team is that four of their players make it to the top seven.

T&T 22 years overdue
Not a major quake in decades...
Aretha Welch awelch@trinidadexpress.com

UWI seismologist, Dr Joan Latchman said yesterday that Trinidad and Tobago, despite the fact that our fear of major earthquakes may be lulled because we have not had a major shake in decades, is in fact 22 years overdue.

She said a tremor of similar proportions to the one which wrecked Haiti’s capital city of Port-au-Prince just two days ago has been on the cards for over two decades.

And if it does hit, those living in areas like the swampy Beetham Gardens, Laventille hill sides, the reclaimed sea beds in West Trinidad and unplanned squatting communities are those who are most vulnerable to experiencing the worst effects of the brutal shaking that will come along with the earthquake.

This according to a team of seismology experts and earthquake engineers who held a press conference at the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Unit, in St Augustine yesterday.

When asked about this country’s level of risk, given the proximity of Haiti, Latchman said, ’We do sit on the corner of the Caribbean plate, all of the Eastern Caribbean, including Venezuela is on a seismic plate boundary. So yes we will have earthquakes.’

After explaining that seismologists have given the country a century long cycle in relation to the occurrence of large earthquakes, she then said given that the last major shake occurred between Grenada and T&T in 1888, the country was about 22 years overdue.

She said, ’We do expect a large event soon. How soon is what we don’t know.’

However, Latchman said there was no need for mass panic if the country kept in mind that earthquakes are not what kill people, but instead it was the falling debris and sometimes improperly built buildings which did the damage.

She warned that the country should prepare.

’When the big earthquake does occur, we do not want it to devastate the economy and destroy the country.’

Dr Walter Salazar, an earthquake engineer at UWI also said that Trinidad and Tobago should have country specific building codes, that was based on the result of seismic maps done for this region, not based on codes that work for foreign countries.

He said at present T&T uses a United States developed building code.

Salazar warned, ’Using building codes, from abroad is not appropriate.’

He said the region must begin to understand their own level of ’seismic hazard.’

Both agreed this country had no country specific building codes and no agency properly enforces laws on building construction in this country and that needs to be rectified.

While they said engineers would adhere to the standards for large projects, they said these rules are not always held by those constructing residential properties.

Lloyd Lynch, Acting director of UWI’s seismic research centre said, ’We need stronger compliance, stronger agencies to police construction.’

From a news crew trying to fly in:
"We were just told that planes circled so long before landing that they landed with insufficient fuel to leave....and they must leave before other planes can land. We left the area when fuel got short and we did not want to jump sequence ...other flights were more important (eg with search dogs.)"

And the seaport is too damaged to accept cargo ships.

Hopefully supplies can be dropped out of the back of c130's so they don't have to land, otherwise big delays to get aid out.

E-Man, for your info: Southern Calif. is well represented by some of those well trained search dogs. That flight left last night at 9pm pacific with supplies from march air force base in California.

What ah joke!! imagine bahrain is the friendliest country in the world according to forbs! what iz the world coming too!          http://travel.yahoo.com/p-interests-30903755

Not ah joke nah, I spent over a week there in March and I can't tell you how impressed I was by the hospitality of the folks over there. I went expecting to see the hostility we see during the TT-BAH game but not so. I had to give a lil speech at a reception at a company and joke bout the football and people ketch kix with me afterwards. Ah had dinner at a man house and they kill us with food and kindness.

To boot I was in Dubai before heading to BAH, and that was an eye opening experience especially when yuh factor in Dubai have a sort of caste system complete with indentured under-class and a native population with a superiority complex. I went to BAH expecting a similar experience but it was night and day compared to Dubai. I had a totally different view of the place when ah left!

Really i'm suppose to be in the mix in the near future, oil biz

From: The Express:
Players' body mourn Shillingford's passing
Thursday, December 24th 2009

The West Indies Players Association (WIPA) expressed sadness yesterday over the passing of former West Indies fast bowler Grayson Shillingford.

Dominica-born Shillingford died of cancer early yesterday at age 65.

In a press release yesterday afternoon, members and executive of WIPA ’extended condolences to the bereaved relatives’ of Shillingford, the first Dominican to play for West Indies.

The fast bowler played seven Test matches between 1969 and 1972.

He took 15 wickets at an average of 35.80, with his best returns being three for 63 off 26.5 overs against New Zealand at Sabina Park in Kingston in February 1972.

WIPA President and Chief Executive Officer Dinanath Ramnarine described Grayson as ’a model cricketer, who displayed all those fine qualities both on and off the field that added lustre to the game’.

’He could never be faulted for lack of effort in whatever role he played in cricket,’ Ramnarine said.

’WIPA sincerely hopes that the fine legacy Shillingford has left, albeit in a relatively short Test career, will be emulated by all involved in West Indies cricket,’ added the WIPA CEO.

And so goes the love hate relationship between KJ and T&T fans....

Ah take een the comparisons between Bent and KJ but anyone notice when KJ came on against City,  the game  changed... he immediately had to men marking him in set plays, one in front and one behind so more space for  ..... the lil things that go unnoticed.

Call S.Bruce on he cell and tell him what you see and see if he go change his mind about KJ.

Bent aint no Jones and Jones aint no Bent

Bent is a quietly proven striker/finisher he runs, he hustles, he has good positioning, he can trap

Jones has decent height and good build, hasn't chased a ball since he got mash up vs england in the stadium
rarely scores with his feet. (dispite the game being called foot ball)

Jones dosent really pull defenders and allow Bent space, Bent is just better and more mobile thus he moves to the right spaces

Dont be hating Bent ....lets face it and be honest he is and will always be better than our boy
sad but true

I agree with bruce, i dont know what it would take but someone needs to light a fire under jones' ass, dont even know if there is much gas left in there, he is at his peak, imagine with age and weight he loses speed oh lawrd..............
And that's why he's the second striker, he is following instructions from Bruce what you expect.
