Could somebody explain why the Mexican had to come off the field and wash his pants???

Cause he had blood on his pants...

Also somewhat of an inconsistency with the ref b/c it doesn't appear the wash job was thorough or appropriate. One thought he would have changed the shorts.

Well, there has been some accountability ... sentences were handed down last week:

According to the BBC:

Quote
An Ivory Coast football official has been sent to jail for six months for printing fake tickets for a match marred by a deadly stadium stampede.

Albert Kacou Anzouan, head of the Ivorian Football Federation (FIF) match organising committee, was also fined $1,000 for manslaughter and fraud.
 ....

Thousands of "parallel" tickets were printed, the state prosecutor said. Faustin Aka, responsible for printing the tickets, was also given the same sentence.

The state prosecutor primarily blamed the deaths on fans without tickets who forced their way into the stadium.

A reported 36,000 fans tried to cram into the Houphouet-Boigny stadium, which has a capacity for 34,600, to see Ivory Coast beat Malawi 5-0.

Our reporter says Anzouan was also found guilty of theft by the correctional court.

The state prosecutor had called for a one-year sentence, reports the AFP news agency.

Two other people from a sub-contractor involved in the printing of tickets were given three-month suspended sentences.

FIF Director General Ardjouma Kone was found not guilty, along with chief accountant Andoh Beugre and three others, AFP reports.

Three members of the police and security forces will be judged by another court, our reporter says.

On Wednesday, football's world governing body Fifa fined the FIF $47,000 following the enquiry into the stadium tragedy.

It imposed a series of safety measures and also announced a donation of $96,000 to a fund set up for the families of the victims.

She seemed very nervous on the first day and the few words she spoke didn't come across too well. The Palin comparision did cross my mind though, but who knows, maybe with a little polishing up she'll surprise us.

She really mastered the beauty queen wave though...

...is she like a trini Sarah Palin???   what's up with not letting her speak to the media??

Good politics.

It's high time the US authorities intervene to prevent fans of El Tri sullying the game on US soil. Punto final.

It's simply a question of ignorance and crowd dynamics.

buh ya kno, he is not the first person of power doin that
Since time eternal people of power have used their influence to gain an advantage over others of less power.....
not so?

well, looks like he fren back back from earlier remarks. gates have a choice - he can follow de president's lead or he can continue along sharpton's path and push for lawsuit - this mirrors a choice facing those in the post-civil rights movement generation.
well some believe that "diplomatic" discussion in situations like this dont afford as quick a change in ideology as they would like so they "over react" to facilatate that change.
as the saying goes
"those who dont learn will feel"

addendum: just watching CNN and heard that at the time he had mentioned the officer's mama???

It's included in the Incident Report ... you know, the version of the events as described by the officer.

Fellas- I know we dont like the USA- most of the forumities on this site. Just maybe a USA coach is what we need for our under17 and under 20's. Just basic structure- fitness and keeping shape as well as first touch.

Wish it was as basic as that.

goalscorer just turn goat  :o

I was now about to say look how men just boldface kicking PKs down the middle.

I couldn't see Froylan Ledezma converting. I was really curious to see who the Ticos would select to kick. Was hoping Ledezma wasn't one of them, and his body language pre-kick confirmed what came next ... after advertising the effort for Memo Ochoa. Not sure who the 5th kicker would have been but I suspect Granados or Marshall ... even with Marshall (another left footer), I suspect Memo would have had the edge.

I had to come out of semi-retirement for this one...

1. Gates was wrong for being upset that the cop initially treated him with suspicion... until you've established your identity that is what the cops are supposed to do, like it or not you are a suspect.  He was doubly wrong for immediately (apparently) assuming that the officer's suspicion was driving by some latent racist "narrative".  That assumption is the root cause of his arrest because it fueled his emotions and overrode his reason.  Even if he felt justifiably slighted by the officer ignoring his legitimate requests to produce identification, that was hardly the time or the place to pursue it.

2. The officer may not be a racist, but he's a Grade-A jackass for deciding to inconvenience Gates by arresting him in what is a transparent display of testosterone-driven one-upmanship.  He's doubly a jackass for wasting the public's time and resources in doing so... a waste underscored by the prosecution's decision not to pursue the charges. "Disorderly conduct" is the typical bullshit catch-all charge used by police whenever they want to trumpet their authority, when better training and common sense would often suffice instead.

3. Just because Sargeant Crowley may have (allegedly) tried to resuscitate Reggie Lewis back in 92/93 whenever it was doesn't mean that he's immune to making stupid decisions... as evidenced by his decision to arrest Gates on his own porch...

the only time Gates made it onto the lawn was in handcuffs, so no, he never followed the cop onto the lawn.

4. As much as I think it was fair for Obama to comment on the issue (he was asked a question, he didn't simply volunteer an opinion) and as much as I respect his opinion, I still believe that his comments were misguided.  At best they are naive b/c his own admission that he wasn't there and didn't know all the facts should have given him more pause before commenting in such a conclusive and forceful way on the situation.  True the decision was "stupid" in the sense that better common sense should have prevailed, but by making such a premature utterance he quite possibly has only contributed to tainting the objectivity of any future litigation.  It will be that much more difficult for the Town/City of Cambridge to have a fair trial with a jury even further biased by the President's comments.

Moreover, as some may conclude, the use of the words 'tumultuous behavior' in the document is not merely incidental or indicative of literary license by the officer. Massachusetts case law and statute specifically reference the words, and the officer presented his information with a view to striking the judicial sweet spots.

Kenton: We can match Mexico
22 July 2009

When Rodrigo Kenton took hold of the reins, Costa Rica were mired in a deep and troubling crisis. Nearly knocked out of 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ qualifying by lowly Grenada, his predecessor Hernan Medford welcomed the opportunity to vacate the increasingly hot seat. However, in the 13 months since taking over, the new man has sparked a remarkable turnaround, guiding the Ticos to top spot in the final round of qualifying, unearthing a raft of new and exciting talent and re-capturing the imagination of a football-crazy Central American nation.

On Thursday, Kenton and Co meet long-time rivals Mexico in Chicago for the semi-finals of the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup. FIFA.com caught up with the boss to gauge his feelings.

FIFA.com: There are a lot of new faces in this Costa Rica squad at the Gold Cup. Did you have to make some tough decisions?

Rodrigo Kenton: This is what I like to call our intermediate team. There are some big names missing, but I tried to find a good balance between experience and youth. I've included some guys that maybe didn't have the right rhythm yet and maybe needed a few more games.

You didn't have the best start to the tournament here in the USA, losing your first game to El Salvador.

In the first few games we didn't look too bright, it's true, but that's the way it is sometimes when you're using new players. We were unlucky in our loss to El Salvador. Now, though, we've righted the ship. Every game is life or death and the players have responded to the challenge very well.

Things certainly seemed to come together in the quarter-final when you beat Guadeloupe 5-1. Were you surprised by the high-octane performance?

I'm not surprised that we managed to score goals in the game against Guadeloupe, but you can never expect to score that many! To be fair, we'd been creating a lot of chances in our previous games, against Canada and Jamaica and El Salvador too. We should have scored a lot more before, but things weren't quite clicking with our final touch. We made up for it last time out, though. we couldn't stop scoring.

Would you say Costa Rica are improving with every game?

I would. And that's the best thing in a short tournament like this. Maybe it's not so bad to start off a little sluggish, because then you can really improve with every game. You have the room to get better, and I think we've built up our self belief.

Speaking of belief, it's bound to be high in your frontline after that 5-1 win.

As a striker you live and die on your confidence and my guys up front should be feeling confident after coming to life in the quarter-final.

The rivalry between Costa Rica and Mexico goes a long way back. What do you expect on Thursday in Chicago?

The biggest problem is going to be the crowd. It's going to be like a home game for Mexico here in Chicago. We will be the away team, no doubt about it. We just need to get past those first 15 or 20 minutes when they will be flying at us and getting pushed on by the fans. After that, if we can survive, we will be able to settle down and play our game. We can match them in every department on the field, but that crowd worries me. It will be like they're playing at the Azteca.

It's a new-look Mexican squad. Have you had a chance to sit down and watch them play?

I have. There are some new players, but it's the same old Mexican style really. [Javier] Aguirre is back in charge and he is trying out some new things, but there won't be any surprises on the field. They have tricky little attackers like Gio dos Santos, they move well up the flanks, they're strong and have good speed. They have a lot of weapons, but so do we.

Steeeuups....Wha' really going on wit my side boy? 1-0 to Venezuela!!? Not a good result, especially coming after that Costa Rica cutass. My team developing TNT senior team malaise now or what?.

Please....say it eh so!!!

Allyuh wouldn't know how much I believe in this side. They better come good against Paraguay. THAT will be the acid test this tournament.

AM I the only one who thinks a 1-0 defeat to the Host country's A side is good particularly with several of our main players missing?..if not a step in the right direction after a 4-1 loss to Costa Rica?

I dunno...learning experience maybe?

Speaking of players missing ... our neighbours have not included some players who are U-20 and eligible for this WC b/c those players are foreign-based, and Farias has preferred to work with a base of players that is consistently available.

On top of that - to tack on to Deeks' comment about the SA qualifying tournament - Farias also incorporated some players that were not part of the qualifying effort, and removed others. I have said here before, several contributors are fixated on the name 'Venezuela', but not on what's actually occurring in Venezuela. There was a time when we wouldn't even have been discussing Venezuela and U-20 qualification in the same sentence. In fact, as between us and them, guess who is likely to be the object in the rear-view mirror.
