Football / T&T Under 20's vs Venezuela - PATRIOT Match Observations.
« on: November 25, 2006, 08:20:50 PM »
T&T Under 20's vs Venezuela - PATRIOT Match Observations.

Well I arrived at the Larry Gomes Stadium around 4:07pm, Just missing the kick-off. There was NO admission but yet still ONLY about 30 people were there, about TEN of them Venezuelans. Note to TTFF - PLEASE try and UNIFY the football calender so that football fans would NOT have to choose between Intercol semi's at the HCS and the Under-20 game at the LGS!!!

Well the first thing I noticed was that T&T were dominating the game and 8-9 of our team were in Venezuela's 1/2 of the field. The pressure continued for the next 5-10 mins and from a foul comitted just outside the Venezuelan penalty box, a free kick was 1/2 cleared by the Venezuelan defence, and fell to T&T's#3, left-sided defender, Marvin James, who rifled a left-footed shot past the dive of the Venezuelan keeper. Goal! T&T led 1-0 Now for the rest of the 1/2, the pattern of play continued with T&T domonating POSSESSION, but rarely creating much clear-cut chances. The Venezuelans, to me, seemed to be taking forever to settle and rarely threatened Adrian Foncette in goal for T&T. The ref turned a blind eye to some VERY robust challenges from BOTH teams, and this would have repercussions later. The 1/2 ended with T&T holding onto the 1-0 lead.

The second half had T&T taking the kick-off, and the crowd had now doubled to about 60. One man said there was a terrible accident on the highway and traffic for so! No sooner had a long, searching ball down our left been made, then the Venezuelans had it back and launched a quick counter attack with some smart 1-2's. Their final touch was horribe though and together with some sturdy defending by T&T and some brilliant saves by Foncette the scoreline remained unchanged...but the pressure eventually paid off! From a free kick situation, there was a mad scramble in the area and a Venezuelan player was able to knock the ball past Foncette. Score now tied at 1-1! Well from here on in, "all hell brokeloose". It was fists flying, man foot flying past face, and more blade pass than Gillette, Schick, personna and Bic put together!!! Yellow card start sharing like peas and eventually T&T right-back, Corneal Thomas was ejected in around the 75th minute for a second yellow when he retaliated with a little TOO obvious elbow. Brian Williams then made some subs, bringing on Dion Peters for Carlyle Mitchell in mid-field, Elton John replaced Guerra and Cadette came on for Aaron Downing. Fonette proved the busier of the 2 keepers in this half and it is HE who kept the scorline at 1-1!

All in all a decent performance by the team, but they will need to step it up next week if we are to beat Jamaica! The players are WAAAY too gun-shy! man looking to pass off the ball just outside the box instead of taking a crack! The forwards tracked back and our midfield tackled well, supporting the defence, which looked fairly well organized EXCEPT when defending free-kicks, as our marking was VERY suspect! But from open play the Venezuelans rarely broke through. From what I saw this afternoon, this Under-20 team will create FEW scoring chances and will be well-advised to play a TIGHT, defensive game in Kingston and play on the break, as we have some speedy players who can take on defences...but they MUST shoot MORE often!!!

Thanks to Shaun Fuentes for the team sheet:-

T&T starting eleven:-

Adrian Foncette #1
Marvin James #3
Corneal Thomas #4
Khaleem Hyland #7
Keon Daniel #8
Matthew Bartholomew #10
Aaron Downing #11
Atulla Guerra #12
Larry Bacchus #13
Carlyle Mitchell #20
Silas Spann #6

Lester Peltier was in the Jabloteh team in action today and so was not available.

I can't make it to tomorrow's game but wish the team the best of luck and hope someone else can post something for me to read when I get back from my own lil sweat in UWI.

As usual, feel free to ask me any questions on anything I may have missed out.

Football / Mini-report on Under-20 game - a Feeling of Deja Vu
« on: October 26, 2006, 08:04:11 AM »
OK peeps, I made my way to the game yesterday and here are my thoughts on what i witnessed. First off, apologies because I am NOT familiar with the players enough to know their names. In attendance was fellow Soca Warriors.net/Warrior nation crew Candytt, Weary and her group and I later spied JahGol above us. Well while i arrived about 5 mins late, it seems I didn't miss much. Now a little aside, when i witnessed this Under-20 team against their Bajan counterparts a few weeks ago, my initial thoughts were "this team will not go far" and this was because they were simply NOT putting away their chances against clearly inferior opposition (no disrespect to Barbados, just calling a spade a spade)...I mentioned same to Touches and a few others. Well the Dominican republic was MARGINALLY better than Barbados and in the opening minutes of last night's game T&T laid seige to their opponents goal! We created raid after raid and the DR's goak-keeper was kept quite busy in the opening 15 minutes as T&T clearly settled well early along. There were 3-4 corners won by T&T, ALL of which resulted in goal-mouth scrambles, but sadly NO goals. Fouls on our players resulted in numerous free-kick opportunities just outside the box...ALL were wasted in my opinion, because they were either over-bar or wide and did NOT force a save from the DR goal-keeper! One man below us muttered " Allyuh wastin' too much chances bwoy, yuh goh pay fuh that!"...these would turn out to be prophetic words!!! The pattern of play continued for most of the 1st half and FINALLY T&T got the go-ahead goal with a sweetly taken free-kick from Captain R. Abu Bakr!!! It came just a few mins before the end of the 1/2, in the 44th min I think.

In the 2nd half, play was more evenly balanced as the #10 for DR came on after warming up for MOST of the 1st 1/2 :} He was a speedy player and the DR simply pumped the long ball to good effect and they actually managed to threaten T&T forcing a couple saves from our gk! Realising that the tide was changing Brian Williams made his first sub, again I'm sorry i don't know the names, and there was no announcer over the loud-speaker to idenitify the players. But alas the #13 who came on was a DEFENDER and he replaced the right-back who had injured his shoulder late in the forst period. Apparently the coach was going to defend our 1 goal advantage IT SEEMED to me??? two final subs by T&T could NOT alter our fate. Well when the DR pressure finally paid off from a classic counter-attack using the long ball as our boys pushed forward, it was NO surprise that the final score was 1-1. Since SVG defeated St kitts 1-0 in the earlier game, T&T MUST now WIN BOTH it's next 2 games!!!

Some interesteing Moments - T&T's Captain for the night Radanfar Abu Bakr was clearly our man of the match, not only did he score our ONLY goal, but he also dramatically headed off the line a CERTAIN goal-bound shot which had beaten our keeper! His lack of pace is an issue, but we (T&T) must work with him, because his size, height, heading ability and MOST of all his free-kick taking are all pros for us to develop to our benefit.

Another CRAZY moment came when T&T MISTAKENLY THOUGHT they'd scored a second goal, but did NOT realise that the ref's assistant had waved the off-side flag! So while NINE of our players were busy celebrating the "non-goal", DR launched a quick counter-attack with FOUR of them bearing down on ONE T&T stopper and the GK!!! Fortunately, the player in possession of the ball over-pushed in his excitement and a VERY embarassing goal was avoided!!!

As most of the crowd would attest, the standard of referring was PISS POOR!!! This was most dramatically shown when after a foul on one of our players, some pushing and shoving started amongst a group of players, IN FULL VIEW OF THE REFEREE and he did NOTHING, just STOOD there, seemingly HELPLESS!! it was a pathetic sight and was probably overshadowed only by the final whistle, which came IMMEDIATELY after one of our players was VICIOUSLY hacked down on the wing and EVERYONE else in the stadium expected final free-kick opportunity!

But bad officiating aside, T&T SHOULD have won this game! I feel a sense of "Deja Vu", because I see the EXACT pattern emerging when our Under 21's failed to get past caribbean opposition for the CAC games earlier this yeara nd were eventually HAMMERED by HAITI...I HOPE I AM wrong, and will be at tomorrow's game with re-newed expectation!!! Coach Williams was seen KICKING away a ball in frustration towards the end of the game as he saw his charges throw away yet again!!!! I feel sorry for him, because I KNOW him to be a good, commited coach and I feel his instructions were simply NOT carried out! One T&T supporter shouted to him over and over Coach, "Ras they NOT using the RIGHT side at all, is only Left, left, left and the DR team readin' the play right through!".

Let me end on a light note, apparently Lester peltier's nickname is "corncurls", which was shouted repeatedly by a VERY overjealous female T&T supporter who at one time threatened the referee, the DR team, their bench and ANYBODY who dared do/say ANYthing untoward to her favorite "snack" LOL. A man below me said " Oh gosh girl, dat is not a name to call the man in public". Also thanks to candytt who for reminding me about the brief spanish lesson I had to give one of our supporters who tried in vain to get the DR coach to sit down by telling him it in what can only be described as "Trini Spanglish"... here are some excerpts - "Coachee SitARSE por favor" "SEINTATE Coche" and another one which I will leave to your imagination but involes a donkey's rear end .... AH See why I can't live ANYwere else BUT IN T&T!!!

Ah love it @ A.SAMUEL!!!

U.S. U-17 residency program admits 19 new players

U.S. Soccer’s under-17 residency program reopened this week with 19 first-semester players in the 40-player fall class at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla.

Preparations begin in earnest this fall for qualifying for the 2007 Under-17 World Championship next summer in South Korea. The fall class is dominated by '90 players who will form the nucleus of the 2007 U-17 national team: 26 players were born in 1990 and 13 in 1991. Only one '90 player, Kyle Davies, remains in residency to finish up his high school studies this semester.

Starting this semester, there is one notable schedule change in the program as the players will now train at IMG Academy in the morning and attend classes at Edison Academy in the afternoon. Many players in recent years had taken accelerated academic programs that often allowed them to finish high school in three years. In addition to games and tournaments, this year's program is expected to include an extended stay in South America.

The U-17 staff brought in dozens of prospects in the last year for evaluations.

"In the past, finding the best players has always been a little tough because you’re basing your decisions on watching players with their club teams,” said U-17 coach John Hackworth. “It is much different when you have them with you in the national team camp, have them in training and when you put them in game situations and they put on a national team jersey. Getting a chance to see these kids perform as part of the U-17s has been invaluable in terms of picking out the best players for the Residency Program.”

Of the 19 new players, two are younger brothers of residency graduates: Kofi Sarkodie's brother, Ofori, captained the '05 U-17s; Zarek Valentin's brother, Julian, was a standout on the '03 U-17 team. Two new residents in the program have been stars in the age group for several years: Nigerian-born Christian Ibeagha of the Edmond (Okla.) Soccer Club and Sierra Leone-born Israel Sesay of the Potomac (Md.) Soccer Club. Newcomer Evan Raynr was a star at the 2006 U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships for Real So Cal.

Twelve former U-17 residency players have also registered at least one cap with the full U.S. national team, and five have played in the World Cup: DaMarcus Beasley, Bobby Convey, Landon Donovan, Eddie Johnson and Oguchi Onyewu.

U.S. U-17 RESIDENCY ROSTER (new players in bold):

Football / Patriot Report
« on: April 27, 2006, 09:13:42 PM »
Ok people here's a mini-report for the game.

Starting line up for T&T was

--------------------------Ince-----------------------

Spann-------Gray-------T. Noel---------Avery

-----------------------Rougier---------------------

A. Wolfe------Whitley------Theobald----Wise

-----------------------Glasgow-----------------------

The game started slowly with T&T maintaining possession, but finding it hard to PENETRATE the Grenadians who basically played us harder and ran at us faster than in the previous game. One man who was the subject of MUCH hard tackles and fouls was Mr Evans Wise! time and time again he was hacked down from behind, the side, in front...essentially when ever he touched the ball! WHICH, to be honest wasn't that much in the first half (Some of us began speculating IF there was a secret agreement between the team "regulars" NOT to pass the ball to Wise, because many of time he would be seen gesticulating that he was free, but the player on the ball would opt for someone ELSE!??? Anyway, the highlight of the 1st half would be Whitley collecting the ball in the Grenadian 1/2 of the field, blow past 2 of their defenders and do a series of step-overs to leave the 3rd man completely bazodee, leave him out, and then square back the ball, only for Glasgow (GG) to shoot wide and over. GG would later redeem him self just before the 1/2 hour mark. T&T's opening goal came when Whitley floated a free-kick into the Grenada goal area, where it was flicked on past the goalie by either Wolfe or Theobald to Glasgow who had the simple task of tapping into an open goal, 1-0 T&T. The second goal came in the 34th min, a diving header by Theobald, following a useful cross from the right-side by Anthony Wolfe. The 1/2 closed with T&T taking a 2-0 lead into the dressing room. Overall while we dominated possession, the "FLOW" from Tuesday night was missing! Spann played better than the last game, but given how badly he looked, THAT is NOT saying much... evidently he has NOT fully recovered from his recent injury though, so I wouldn't be TOO hard on him. Rougier had a much improved start and played his role as ball-winner, and link between derfence and attack VERY well. Tony lacks pace, but has the strength and ability to shield the ball and make accurate short passes to get the ball out from the back with OUT the "BOOM KICK" approach! there was an interesting moment early on when a Grenadian tried to lob Ince in similar fashion to the goal he conceded Tuesday night, but Clayton DID manage to recover in time, THIS time around, only to watch as the ball landed on the TOP of net BEHIND the goal... the crowd reaction revealed WHO was at the Arima Stadium :} Wolfe was NOT very effective on the right flank, and the defence was NOT tested.

Second half began with some changes -

J.M. Williams for Ince
Baptiste for Wolfe
Atiba Charles for Rougier

Our 3rd goal came soon in the 1/2 with David Atiba Charles heading down powerfully from a corner taken by Whitley I believe. There would be some MORE hacking down of Wise, who was now dropping back further to GET the ball, and opting to make the intelligent pass, given the "Special Attention" being meted out to him. Glasgow showed some flashes of VINTAGE Glasgow, twisting, turning and firing wide... Gary just being Gary. But Wise would NOT be denied, he saw a Grenadian bearing down on him to drop blade, "chooked" the ball past him, hopped over him, and had a go, but the keeper held. Soon after, Glasgow, twisting and turning in the box was brought down (I didn't see this, as I was distracted by Hyperhot j... i say NO more) and a penalty awarded. Spann converted the resulting spot-kick "low and to the right of the keeper" - EXACTLY as Mr Gilbert O'Connor seated next to me predicted! By now the wind had been blown out of Grenada's sails and T&T continued to dominate. In-between there were some final changes, with Glenton Wolfe replacing Cyd Gray and Rahim coming on for Whitley. Avery took over the arm-band and moved to centre of defence with Glenton Wolfe slotting into left-back. There was VERY little of note to mention after.

I felt our overall performance was NOT as cohesive as on Tuesday, ESPECIALLY since we are talking about playing against a Grenada Under-23 (Olympic) team. Nonetheless, we won 4-0 and the players got some much needed match practise. Leo even had the luxury of trying out players in different roles. eg. Trent Noel a midfielder played a full 90 mins as a Central defender, Atiba Charles played as a Def mid, and Theobald moved from left-wing to his more favored central midfield role (He had a MUCH improved 2nd 1/2!).

I don't envy Leo. Wise deserves a run against Peru, but then IF he impresses, WHO gets dropped for him. I'd say A Wolfe BUT even then, someone ELSE still has to be cut... hard to call.

That's about it. If anyone has any questions about anything I missed out, just ask.

There was some differences of opinion about attendance, but MY guesstimate is in the vicinity of 1,000 - 1,200. Other mentionables, include a bulb apparently blew in one of the Floodlights, Mr "BUY NUTS FROM MEH NUH" continually appealing for some one to buy him a ticket to Germany, and complaining that "SOUTH could only get a "President's XI", and NOT the Soca Warriors", not to mention the verbal sparring between some of the forumites present, which included myself, O'Connor G, Jefferz, Andre Samuel, Cowen, Big & Small Magician and Girl Warrior, my pardnuh Gregory and Hyperhot J. I'll let them tell their OWN stories LOL :}

Eriksson relieved at draw.
Associated Press.

English coach Sven-Goran Eriksson said it was fate that his England team was again pitched against his homeland Sweden in Friday's draw for next year's World Cup finals.
England, the 1966 champion, avoided the heavyweights and was also drawn against Paraguay, which it beat at the 1986 World Cup, and debut-making Trinidad and Tobago.
"They are difficult games, but I am happy with the group," Eriksson told BBC television from the draw in Leipzig, Germany. "It could have been worse, much worse."
Eriksson was also in charge when England drew 1-1 with Sweden at the 2002 World Cup. England hasn't beaten Sweden in 11 matches since 1968.
"It's destiny, I suppose," Eriksson said. "I thought with statistics that we shouldn't have drawn them because we played them at the last World Cup but that's life and sooner or later we have to beat them."

England captain David Beckham said he was happy with the draw.

"Paraguay are a bit of an unknown quantity, but we will be prepared fully when we meet them," Beckham told England's Football Association Web site. "To use an old football cliche, there are no easy games. We have to go out and prove we are one of the favorites."
Eriksson was happy to have avoided the Netherlands and Australia, which has a long-standing sporting rivalry with England. England has beaten Paraguay in both their previous meetings, but never met Trinidad and Tobago.
"At least on paper, we are the favorites together with Sweden to go through, but you never know," he said.
Nine Trinidad and Tobago players are at English clubs, including goalkeeper Shaka Hislop, but Eriksson said he'd never seen the country play.
"When it happened, I was just running around, cheering in the bar," said Trinidad midfielder Chris Birchall, who plays for Port Vale in English soccer's third tier. "I will be lining up against players who I have been watching week in, week out in the Premiership."
Beckham said he was looking forward to playing Trinidad's best-known player - his former Manchester United teammate Dwight Yorke.
"He is someone who I share many great memories with," Beckham said.
If England advances from the group, it will meet one of the top two teams from Group A - which contains Germany, Poland, Ecuador and Costa Rica. England has a long rivalry with Germany and beat Poland twice in the qualification campaign for this World Cup.
"Germany will win their group," Eriksson said. "They are in a rather easy group. They are the host nation, that's why I think they will win it (the group). It's better to play Poland than Germany. We will be trying to win the group."
Eriksson may not need to worry. At the 2002 finals in South Korea and Japan, it advanced from a tougher group including Sweden, Argentina and Nigeria. England reached the quarterfinals, but lost to Brazil. It also reached the quarterfinals of the 2004 European Championship, losing to Portugal.
England, which was the first drawn out of the pots at the draw, and plays Paraguay on June 10 in Frankfurt, Trinidad and Tobago on June 15 in Nuremberg, and Sweden on June 20 in Cologne.

Tough draw for the United States
By Jamie Trecker (Fox Soccer Channel)

Reigning champs Brazil and hosts Germany got good draws for the 2006 World Cup finals today in the Saxon town of Leipzig while Argentina and Italy learned they have challenges ahead of them.

But arguably the worst news came for the Americans, who were drawn into one of two so-called "groups of death."

The USA will have to get past three-time champions Italy, the powerful and highly rated Czech Republic, and African contenders Ghana in Group E. Moreover, they will have to do it on European soil, a venue that has never favored the Americans.

Manager Bruce Arena said he didn't care who the Americans faced, but he surely had to hope it would have been better than Italy, the Czech Repulic and Ghana.

Arena sounded as upbeat as possible, but acknowledged that the Americans had received a tough break by not being one of the top seeds. "One thing 2002 taught me is that you can't worry about the draw."

"There were only two teams I talked about before tonight that I said we might not want to face — Germany, because they're the hosts and Brazil because they're Brazil. But I expected what we got in the draw. Right now we're pleased we know our opponents, and we'll start to prepare for them.

"We can't choose our opponents. Obviously, Italy is always tough, and we know about the Czechs and Ghana with [Michael] Essien. But my job is not to choose the teams we play but to prepare them for whom we do, and we're going to start doing that now.

Breaking it down, team by team, the USA have never won against the Italians. The Americans faced them twice in the World Cup finals and lost both times, 7-1 back in 1934; and 1-0 in 1990. They have never faced the Czech Republic, but lost 5-1 to the now-defunct Czechoslovakia back in 1990's Cup as well. And Ghana — while they have never played the USA — could well be this year's dark horse team. At least, that's how I'd pick them were they not wedged in this mess of a bracket.

It gets worse, by the way: Should the USA slide through the 2nd slot to go through to the knockout, it is probable they'd face … you guessed it: Brazil.

Now, the good news for American fans who are already booking tickets in Gelsenkirshen, Kaiserslautern and Nuremburg, with a June 23rd return flight: The USA can be competitive and can catch a break in any given game. But the Americans have a big hurdle: They will have to overcome history.

First, the USA have never won a meaningful game on European soil. By being the 3rd seed in the group, the USA does avoid a killer opener against Italy and play instead against the Czechs.

That's a break, or a break such as one will get in this group.

The Czech Republic is a sleeper — they don't have the best organization on the field, but they can be deadly on the counterattack. The key player to watch obviously is Peter Cech, who has been unbeatable between the pipes for almost two full years for both club and country. While Milan Baros is more often offside than in scoring position, he's a stud that a somewhat vulnerable American defense will have to contain. Oh, lest we forget, the Czechs were also semifinalists in Euro 2004.

In their second game, the USA has to face Italy. That's a backbreaker, and the USA will have to hope that Ghana took some shine off the Italians in the opener. Frankly, Italy could win the whole thing — they have talent all over the field. It will be interesting to see if the USA uses the same strategy against them as they did against Portugal — the Italians can be unsettled, and I venture Arena will be watching a lot of tape. But he has no possibility of sneaking up on the Azzuri.

Finally, there is Ghana. The USA doesn't have much of a track record against African teams. They beat a weak Ivory Coast 5-2 back in 1992; drew Tunisia 1-1 in 2000 and played Cameroon to a 0-0 draw in 2003, but none of those games have any relevance. The USA is going to have to try and play a few African teams: Frankly, the USA must approach that final game as their chance to steal points and hope that will be enough to advance.

Two things to keep in mind. One is that no-one respects the USA, and that is a big mistake. This will be a competitive, tough side. The second is that the draw may squelch some of the silliness I've heard suggesting the USA can go deep. That actually helps — the USA play well as underdogs.

Rounding up the rest of the draw, reigning champs Brazil once again got an easy path to the knockout stage with Japan, Croatia and Australia to challenge. Interestingly, this group could break well for the Australians, who though they lack experience on the big stage, should feel as if they can play with any of these teams.

Hosts Germany — despite the stated wishes of star Michael Ballack for tough opposition — got what seems on paper to be a cakewalk. They open the tournament in Munich on June 9 against Costa Rica and then will face a very unbalanced Polish team that relies a lot on work rate.

In contrast, Argentina got their wish; or at least that of the young and arguably naĂŻve Lionel Messi. Messi wanted to face the best, and he will if he stays healthy as Group C is a powerhouse with Holland, Ivory Coast and Serbia making up the roster.

And for the first time in a long while, England has to feel as if they caught a break. While they will face their coach's home country of Sweden, Sven Goran-Eriksson's boys should walk all over paper-thin Trinidad and Tobago and the elderly South Americans of Paraguay.

In CONCACAF, only Mexico seems to have a solid chance of reaching the knockout stages. Sadly, this looks to be a World Cup where the region is once again just making up the numbers.

On paper, this is a scattershot Cup. Some will argue that with so many weak groups there will be parity and a chance to see unfamiliar faces in the knockout round, and that's certainly true. But does that mean an Australia or a Tunisia can do much once they get there? I don't think so.

TRECKER'S PREDICTION: Three and out for the USA. That doesn't mean the Americans can't and won't acquit themselves well, but will American sports fans understand?

Football / Dwight and STERN???
« on: September 19, 2005, 04:12:09 PM »
I was travelling last week, and found myself thinking about the team and the games played. Do you realise that the ONLY 2 players who have played in EVERY single World Cup Qualifier this year, are Dwight and Stern? Of course some men only missed out because of injury and suspension, but interesting stat eh?
