I am glad for these kids and at the same time I feel sorry for them because their level of development is not on par with their peers in the more developed world despite the fact that they have the talent and potential.
Players from the eighties and prior did better because they played football everyday. They developed THEMSELVES. In the old days players went to school early and got a sweat before school started, during recess, lunchtime and long hours after school and on weekends. Football was played in the street, dirt clearings, backyards, courts, beach, parking lots, school yards, even inside classrooms.
Nowadays players mostly play organized football under the supervision of a coach. This has its drawbacks because players don't learn by discovery.
These modern coaches in Trinidad would go on a course in Holland,England or America. Typically these courses teach the coaches how to organize a practice session and give suggestions as what should be taught at whatever level the coach is coaching.
For example, I know that Cooper did the Dutch FA course which is equivalent to a C/B level where systems are introduced and coordination of the various positions into the whole is touched upon. Now knowledge of systems and coordination of defenders to midfield etc is all well and good but individual development is the most important element that is presently suffering in Trinidad youth football.
The coaches of the past, as opposed to present day, placed a lot of emphasis on the individual..fitness, stamina, endurance, strength, skill were the watchwords of the old coaches.
Today if you have a coversation with a young coach..the first question he would ask is.. "what is your favourite system?"
In foreign countries such as Brazil, Holland and the USA to a lesser extent, players are exposed to all positions during their develpoment but are mainly developed for a particular position to fit into an attacking style of football.
In Brazil wing backs must be athletic, highly technical and must be able to attack from a defensive position. Midfielders would be creative, tactical as well as physical. Defenders are technical, tactical, physical, athletic with high flexibility and range of motion.
In Holland, like Brazil, all players are highly technical;Players technical abilities are challenged and improved upon by specific training programs e.g wingback must be able to defend in the 1v1,2v1,3v1,4v2,2v2,3v3,4v4. The defender would always know what his role is in each of these situations. Similarly a forward understands time and space and how to attack defenders based on the various scenarios that a presented in that part of the field. The training process is long and arduous and much is involved .In the US, the National U17 all live together at a training center in Florida, the players get to go home during the Christmas break and other short breaks throughout the year. The players live for the game, they go to school after training then go back to training after school.
Despite this the US is still behind europe and south america because they don't have the talent pool.
We on the other hand have the talent pool but we don't have the development process. There is no way we would ever be able to catch up.
