True ..however we should not give these veterans automatic picks..

784
The majority of young players who represented the red white and black made the most impact in their younger years. The exception was the 2006 team which was managed by Beenhaaker who locked them into a defensive system..play behind the ball..that's why old seasoned veterans were used...  they played enough football to know how to stay in a particular part of the field and guard that space ..they were also very composed and took there time and played a slow deliberate brand, in so doing the game is slowed.. his intention.. not lose the game. That's why we didn't last in the Gold Cup. The objective is to win, take chances...young players provide that for your team..it's only natural.

Football / Re: Jones must step up, says Phillips.
« on: February 17, 2013, 06:58:44 PM »
As a coach ..if I were to use Jones in my line up I would use him as a target man. His role would be to stay with the last man, he would create space and time for my other forward and the rest of the attack. He would always find himself  in dangerous space and would look much better because he would always be closer to the opponents goal. He is a very big target.. his large body mass would make close marking in tight spaces close to the goal very difficult. If he is the lone target man or with a strike partner, he would always  be deep (up the ladder) and all balls would  be played to him in the air during which time support (down ladder) would get nice layoffs.
Playing feet would not be the first choice of pass to this player. By playing direct air balls to him, would cause an  imbalances the center of the defence ..the central defenders would have  a difficult game because they would always be doing battle in the air against a large man who is technically good in the air.
We really don't want Jones outside the area trying to run at defenders..and we really don't need him to be trying to force headers goalward unless he's in the six yard box going forward. His primary role should be to provide depth, and space and time to create scoring opportunities for other attacking players. He would be my prime target in set plays not necessarily in forced goalward headers but also trying to set up somebody else.

The question is how many players like Giggs or Scholes are playing in the top flight. These men are used sparingly, they don't play in every game ,they are in the team to pass the torch to younger players. Come the big game you don't see them on the roster. Ask Alex Ferguson ..he said it himself..Football is a young man's game. Young players ..Messi,Balotelli,Ronaldo,Bale,Van Persie,Aguero,Silva,Oscar,Mata, I can go on all night.

I see that vb was surprised that Fatima has four players on this team, actually Fatima has one of the better youth programs in the Colleges league .
In 2009 Fatima won the National U14 title. St Benedict's lost to them on penalties in the final. The both schools had a lot of talent.  Yafeu Rougier from Benedict's is the cousin of Anthony Rougier. Mateon Watson was the central midfielder for Benedict's was taken over to Naparima. There was a large talent pool at Benedict's but because of the lack of a development program, mentorship and guidance at least four top talented players fell into the shadows and will never make it past the recreational level.
Coaches don't really seek out talent at an early age; only the ones who make a name for themselves early on get looked at.
Coaches need to go and watch U14 games, primary school games don't wait for InterCol. Another thing I have noticed is that some very good players don't go to the National screenings. I know of two exceptional players who have not gone to these screenings. The players would not be considered for selection if they don't participate in the screenings.

Also if these new coaches want to consult with the old guys, I am sure they would welcome it. Also their training methods is no secret..their are many players who have been coached by these men and I am not only referring to those coaches you have mentioned ..there are many old coaches in Trinidad who have not made a name for themselves like SinClaire but the emphasis was the same.
Sean Cooper had Carl Osborne..many south players had Doc Henderson, Adrian Chandler, Peter Mitchell, Jan Steadman, Rawl Aimey, Edgar Vidale, Dick Furlonge, Steve Khan, Danny, Isa Mohammed..players in the north had Jap Brown, Roderick Warner, Jean  Lillywhite, Gally Cummings, Sharkey, La Forest, and many others which I can't recall at this time and none of these guys would be having discussions about systems ..the player would always be the focal point.

That's why they don't have the talent pool..soccer is not the main sport so the best athletes play other sports.

You are right ..the old coaches are all on their way out or have already exited. It is now up to the young coaches to understand what was done well in the past and use those tools as part of their tool kit. Not every quality of an old coach is undesirable. We have to build on what was done well in the past.
We have to recognize our weaknesses and improve .This is the journey of life.
In National football ,those who have come and gone have left something behind, it is up to us to either find value in what was left behind, or discard it. We as a people like to discard our own because we find less value in things local.

I am glad for these kids and at the same time I feel sorry for them because their level of development is not on par with their peers in the more developed world despite the fact that they have the talent and potential.
Players from the eighties and prior did better because they played football everyday. They developed THEMSELVES. In the old days players went to school early and got a sweat before school started, during recess, lunchtime and long hours after school and on weekends. Football was played in the street, dirt clearings, backyards, courts, beach, parking lots, school yards, even inside classrooms.
Nowadays players mostly play organized football under the supervision of a coach. This has its drawbacks because players don't learn by discovery.
These modern coaches in Trinidad would go on a course in Holland,England or America. Typically these courses teach the coaches how to organize a practice session and give suggestions as what should be taught at whatever level the coach is coaching.
For example, I know that Cooper did the Dutch FA course which is equivalent to a C/B level where systems are introduced and coordination of the various positions into the whole is touched upon. Now knowledge of systems and coordination of defenders to midfield etc is all well and good but individual development is the most important element that is presently suffering in Trinidad youth football.
The coaches of the past, as opposed to present day, placed a lot of emphasis on the individual..fitness, stamina, endurance, strength, skill were the watchwords of the old coaches.
Today if you have a coversation with a young coach..the first question he would ask is.. "what is your favourite system?"
In foreign countries such as Brazil, Holland and the USA to a lesser extent, players are exposed to all positions during their develpoment  but are mainly developed for a particular position to fit into an attacking style of football.
In Brazil wing backs must be athletic, highly technical and must be able to attack from a defensive position. Midfielders would be  creative, tactical as well as physical. Defenders are technical, tactical, physical, athletic with high flexibility and range of motion.
In Holland, like Brazil, all players are highly technical;Players technical abilities are challenged and improved upon by specific training programs e.g  wingback must be able to defend in the 1v1,2v1,3v1,4v2,2v2,3v3,4v4. The defender would always know what his role is in each of these situations. Similarly a forward understands time and space and how to attack defenders based on the various scenarios that a presented in that part of the field. The training process is long and arduous and much is involved .In the US, the National U17 all live together at a training center in Florida, the players get to go home during the Christmas break and other short breaks throughout the year. The players live for the game, they go to school after training then go back to training after school.
Despite this the US is still behind europe and south america because they don't have the talent pool.
We on the other hand have the talent pool but we don't have the development process. There is no way we would ever be able to catch up.

Why do we like to entertain ourselves with nonsense? Sherwood is a businessman, so is La Foucade, these men are making a living..they know where the real talent is but they choose to do otherwise.

Best of luck to this young player..we need good young talent like Power.

I apologize..I was so excited for the opportunity to interact with the Coach the words flowed onto the page. I also wanted to add Garth Pollonais as one of the better strikers we had in Trinidad. The coachman played with some good players back in his playing days he should have a good idea of the type of mindset these forwards have.

802
Coach Shabazz I am glad that you have decided to ask for our input..I will give my two cents..if I were in your position I would go with youth and the core would be local players. The Gold Cup is a tournament and a tournament is very different from WC qualification. Young players are better suited for this type of competition. They have more energy, take more risks and are hungrier to make a contribution. They would give you less problems ..they would listen to your instruction without giving you opposition..the discipline would be better and the ego problem would be less. Your task as a coach is to have a philosophy of football that these players would enjoy playing ,once they enjoy themselves.. you would be the best Coachman in their minds. You should have a philosophy which would be understood i.e the team knows it's objective when in possession and knows exactly what to do the moment possession is lost and knows exactly how to regain possession and once regained ..knows what's the final objective. The team has to know exactly what to do in every dead ball situation and understand the importance of the element of surprise.. both in attack and on defence. With a local base you would have more time to implement your philosophy the few foreign players that would join the team later would fall into a well organized system and feel comfortable right away. The most important thing is to show belief in your players, however you must be realistic, if a player is not well suited for a given role ,he should not be given that role, ask your players what they think...always get feedback from all directions..no one is saying that you have to listen to everybody ,you just have to take everyone into consideration..like you are doing right now..Thanks for the opportunity Coach..you have just gained my respect and support.

So to sum things up..like I have said before ..Kenwyn Jones is not a  true forward. He is playing the role of a target man in England but cannot be depended on the be the forward that we want for our team..  we need a real striker. We always had excellent strikers..Warren Archibald, Steve David, Wilfred(bound to score) Cave, Burt Neptune, Ron La Forest, Nevick(bound to score) Denoon, Philbert Jones, Adrian(saddles) Fonrose,  Roderick(Rambo) Gibbs, Stern John, Dwight Yorke, Leonson Lewis to name a few.

I saw Latas as a mere boy..playing against grown veteran players in the first div..Trintoc vs Police in Skinner Park and that little boy made grown men look like clowns..he was so amazingly dominant I couldn't see Michel Platini with his abilities ..I said to myself he is destined for greatness. In his defence it's hard to develop that kind of talent when we didn't have the expertise at the time..maybe if Bertille had him he would have developed the weaker aspects of his game such as winning the ball back and being more strong on the ball..but Beenhaker should have played the man up front  instead of Glen against Sweden..we would have gotten 3 pts.

Jones is nowhere in class with Stern John..for me Stern John was the best center forward to wear the red white and black. He knows his craft..
